I hate my brain Storage question - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I think I saw a hack somewhere to essentially combine the emmc and external sd card into one "block" of storage am I crazy or does this exist?

LVM ?
or just mount -o bind /emmc /sdcard/external_SD ?

My goal is to make Spotify Google music and Google movies use the external sd card. My nook is only 16gb

Well, the issue is there is a problem with the CM10.1 build where it by default downloads to emmc instead of external SD. I am working with verygreen to try to fix that. Be patient.

Well, verygreen does not want to change it for emmc installs. He says Google recommends it this way. I might be able to come up with a work around, but it might make it so things are backwards, SD wise. So don't know if we want that.

I saw a post on Google plus that said something about the nook HD just got more awesome. Saying that apps2sd had been figured out and the user was able to store Google music on the sd card. Might have been a dream at this point because I can't find it now. Maybe something as simple as a symlink

[Q] A few questions on what is going on

So I purchased a nook hd+ on ebay, and I've been reading around am just look for some straight answers before I take a dive.
I want a little understanding of what it is going on.
Is what is being run aosp android, like cm10 or are people just running gapps in the stock b&n os?
Can whatever things are being run have no other choice but to run on an sd card, or can they run from the internal memory?

You currently have two choices, run CM10 or CM10.1 on SD or run stock on internal either virgin or modified for root or gapps or other mods. We cannot run another ROM on internal memory yet.

So I can't root or use CM10(.1) unit I get an SD card is what I'm understanding right?
And has anyone confirmed you can use a 64gb sandisk uhs-1 card for this?

You are understanding it right. SD is necessary to root and SD is necessary if you want CM10. Some have said those SDs are ok. To root it can be any card, even a 1GB card.

I waited for an SD card to come over the weekend and I was finally able to add GApps to stock.
I've been liking the experience so far, but I was wondering how multitasking works on stock.
The stock launcher doesn't seem recognize apps from the play store.
Is there a different way to switch and/or close apps?

The zeam launcher came with gapps (rev1) so that can be used to; launch the apps added with play store. And there are other apps that let you see recent apps. Like recents plus.

[Q] Increasing SD transfer speed

I have the stock NookHD rooted but was wondering how best to implement a higher cache speed on my SD card (class 10 PNY) If I can use an app I'm hoping it does not mess with the /system, But maybe there is a better way? (A flashable zip in recovery)
The reason I ask is because when transferring media files between the pc and and BNTV400, it either lags/crashes or in other cases moving files already on the card says it will take upwards of 40 minutes to complete! Is this really how they want the Nook to function?
If I'm looking at this the wrong way please let me know!

Part of the problem is that pny SD. They are horrible with these devices. And the stock kernel does a bad job with with external SDs. Not much you can do except get a different card.

FYI, I'm using Trancend class 10 SD (32GB) on Nook HD+ and it seems to work with no issues. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633 thread has even list of good and bad flash cards (in terms of IO, especially random 4kb IO. You may check this thread choose a replacement.

How likely do you think it would be in the future that we get a custom kernel? Obviously I don't think any of us would be running the stock OS by then either but would it have an impact on the speeds both internal or external? I'm hoping it's not a limitation of the hardware.

I will look into it for future expansion, I just hope that it's the card and not hardware differences between nookHD and the HD+

If you are running CM10 on HD+ you are running a custom kernel. Verygreen builds his own from B&N source. And he customizes it. He says the SD problems seems to be hardware related.
But, because of locked bootloader issues, it may a long time before custom kernels come to stock.

Is it possiblle for HD to run CM 10.1 on Emmc, like HDplus

Hi there,
is it possible for HD to run CM10.1 on Emmc like HDplus?
thank you!
I'd like to know this as well. All I've seen for the NookHD is SDCard boot.

It is theoretically possible, but no one has done it yet.

In that case, if I use the sd boot method, can I still use that card for storage as well, or is it deticated to booting CM?

The SD does more that just boot. It stores the system and data files there too. You leave the SD inserted all the time. And it creates a large media storage partition to store files when running CM from SD. That is why it is best to use a large SD.

[Q] Do I need Micro SD card to unlock, root, and flash?

So I just picked up the Nook Tablet HD+.. I want to install a rom, but don't have an extra microSD laying around and I don't ever really want to use the B&N interface.. and would rather use a stable stock type set-up. I tried searching, and saw some methods for flashing into internal, but I believe you already had to be unlocked through an microSD.
Also, when I am reading EMMC, that is talking about the internal storage, correct?
You need to use a micro SD if you want to change anything (either on internal or installing another ROM to SD). And yes, emmc is internal memory (Embedded MultiMedia Card).

Thanks a lot. Would you say CM 10.1 pretty stable? Is it faster than stock? I'm running Nova launcher which helps a lot with the look and feel.

[Q] DIY for emmc-less Rom

My nook hd+ got bricked by the infamous lagfix app.I dont live in the US so I cant replace it. Verygreen made a special sd card install for me that worked on a emmc less system. It worked but since then I am stuck on a single Rom. So can someone please tell me how can I tweak a Rom to work on my emmc less tablet.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hello my nook hd+ did the same when i run lagfix for the first time on carbon rom. Can you pleas upload the sd card image you have so I can use my Nook because there is no way to return it. I living in Eastern Europe and nook was a present from my brother business trip in USA.

Look at verygreen's post here.
Worked very good i am using 16 GB card and it is nice and smooth. I just wont to ask you can I install CyanogenMod updates the are shown in the menu or they are not for this type SD only system.

No, the updates are for internal memory only. They will not work on any SD. That is why the OP was asking for some way to convert them to this scheme.

Another question regarding the Nook hd+ tablets without internal memory, whether the use of the application lagfix / trim can cause more damage and may lead to the inability to boot or damage SD card or SD card controller inside the tablet.

You should not need lagfix on an SD setup, especially a no-emmc one. And nothing you do should effect the ability to boot from SD.
