Ok maybe I'm an idiot or maybe it's a design problem but yesterday I noticed my HTC one camera glass lens has cracked. Looks like an X across the lens. It's somehow affecting the camera as it reflects light a d cause ghosting in my images under bright light.
I've seen the ifixit teardown and it looks like one hell of a job just to get the phone apart to replace the lens or even the cover.
So if you guys were me, what would you do ? Live with it ? Or send it back for repair ? Or anything I can do by myself ?

I think my recent experience might be helpful to a lot of people (hopefully)!
My 3 weeks old HTC One camera lens cracked as well, and like almost every blog that I've read when I Google searched (HTC One cracked camera lens), I was surprised by the large number of the same problem. One thing that I am now beginning to learn, is that HTC is well aware of this issue (I called their customer service center and asked that my case to be elevated to their product people and senior managment) and luckily my customer service rep was really cool (she was in their New Brunswick, Canada location) and understanding, so she took 2 pages of notes from my conversation and assured me that HTC would contact me by phone to ask me more about it, and would do the responsible thing to take this seriously.
I learned this along the way...we need to stop telling everyone there is a "flaw in their design" and instead tell your vendor that your phone is "defective"! That was my approach and after a brief conversation with the manager the exchange occured. I now have a brand new replaced phone, my (3 weeks old) phone is being returned to HTC as a "defective phone", and nobody is pointing fingers or blaming the other. This may or may not work for you, but it worked for me, and therefore I highly recommend that you consider trying this approach...of course it might also depend on the caliber of the sales rep you are dealing with, so ask for a decision maker (supervisor or manager). The other part of the story that played out for me was to print out as many pages of this XDA developers blog identifying this same cracked camera lens problem and carry it with you so that they can see there are likely hundreds of other HTC One owners with this same problem. Of course not everyone that has this cracked lens issue inputted their information online, but that also does not mean there aren't several other cases, and the decision maker will understand that you are not the only one making a request, that this is a well known problem. You need to stick to your guns and tell them your phone is one of the defective phones and show them the vast number of people with this problem...
Good Luck!!

I've only had this for phone for about a week and I already see a small fragment of dust underneath the screen. It's located in the upper right corner of the screen, so it couldn't have gotten in through the 3.5mm jack, I think.
Anyone else having this problem?
Hmmm... Having dust on the bottom part of the screen, right in the middle, I suspect an issue with stick during manufacturing, so screen is not correctly fixed and dust can pass through holes :-(
If we are not so many to have dust I can imagine it's not so frequent so I'm going to write down to HTC to expose these facts and claim for another device...

Hey...even i got dust under the screen in the middle left...its annoying on white backgrounds :S

I also get a dust under screen, it in the buttom, I really don't know how did it come in there.
Well apparantly I'm not the only one, it seems to be a common issue then.

I hope your results are better then mine.
I asked for a new device, not from HTC but from the retailer where i bought it.
He told me that giving new devices does not fall under the 'repair' warranty. He adviced me to bring the phone in and they would send it to a HTC repair center.
I did send a mail to HTC though, but they haven't replied yet.
:edit: They replied to me this morning, giving me two possible solutions depending on the retailer himself.
Either I could get a new model from the retailer (which in this case is impossible), or the cellphone could be repaired at the HTC repair center. They also told me that if it's option two, I might as well let them pick up my cellphone seeing as the retailer would just send it to them anyhow.
I accepted the offer and they're picking it up this friday.
Is dust under the screen an HTC problem? I don't recall hearing issues about dust under the screen with Samsung or Motorola phones.
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
They do seem to have a bad reputation considering that issue.
Let's just hope they bring my cellphone back scratch-free and completely sealed.
same problem here.
i changed the phone two times. the third one also has dust under the display. HTC support told me to send this to the retail center to repair it. Needs 10-14 days...
The media store offered me to change to a desire s. To small dislay, the third post in a german forum: dust under the display... f....
Mine had the same problem. I called HTC Taiwan, and they picked up my phone next morning. After 48hr, the phone was back nice and shiny in an "I'm Back" cute little box with a free cleaning cloth. Very satisfied with the service. I suggest call htc repair. Shipping is free and quick.
I'm guessing it's a common problem with the first batch of these smartphones.
I think i'll have my phone back by friday, so it'll take little over a week.
Such waiting time is quite common here, it's actually not that bad compared to other repair centers.
Hi, i have the same problem and i have that phone from 10 days. When i bought it it was clean and no dust inside. Please tell me if i send it to retail center to repair is it a good choice or soon will be the same. I have HD2 before and i didn't have this problem.
I'm on my 3rd P970 and I'm wondering... is this device inherently defective? I got this phone last month and due to dust particles taking residence under the screen, I asked LG for a replacement. After much grief and threatening on my part they replaced the unit, but after a day I discovered it suffering from the same dust issue and so I asked for another replacement and now here we are. Barely a day of normal handling and it already has dust.
If you guys have the time, please check for dust using this method and let me know if you're experiencing the same issue. Also, let us know where you're from, I also want to find out if it's a country specific issue.
1. Lock the screen so the backlight is out
2. Use a flashlight to check the screen
3. Prepare for disappointment
Also, I know that in some countries, consumer laws can be very empowering, but in the Philippines, companies will try to give you the runaround if they think they can get away with it.
No dust in here.
No dust in here neither.

No dust here, but I'm on my 3rd OB also.
The first two had lots of dead pixels. And the current one have just arrive from warranty because off a speaker malfunction... And I think that the vibration is a bit different comparing with the previous OB's I had...
So not a great experience so far ...

Ha! I've owned an Optimus One and had this issue with that device as well. I don't have that issue with my ever reliable nexus s so I shouldn't have to endure it with the OB.
i have dust under the screen but it`s come after he arrived from assistance (lcd display replaced due the dead pixel) lazy stupid workers and they have a certificate .....
no dust for me too..
I do have a dust under my screen because the screen has been replaced (it didn't work), and stupid technicians replaced it negligently.
It really drives me crazy! every time I look at my screen, I feel that it's really worst phone what I have.. ( Why couldn't the technicians give me a new phone simply?!)
Do you agree that I have to take my phone and ask for cleaning of the dust? (or new phone, but they won't give me easily)
Mine is also dust free and it's my first OB
i have no dust but many little white pixels -.- you only can see in black background but theyre not annoying
two OBs at house but no dust in both.. I think philippines is a dusty place just joking man.. But i also really wonder how u guys get such replacements, here in india they repair the product(carefully) and dont replace easily..

I'm going to send my phone to repairing, is it justified in your opinion to send a phone because of a dust under the screen? would you do the same?
No dust under my screen kabayan. Where did you buy your OB? Had mine repaired last week due to some problems with the main board. The folks at SM Cyberzone had its main board replaced for free. Great service though kinda slow Hope you get a new unit without any problems whatsoever.

I was much aware of the build quality issues experienced in Europe and was wary when picking up my device. It had the tiniest gap in the middle between the top speaker grille and frame so I took it home Friday.By this morning, the gap had run all the way across the top, curved around the top left corner to the bottom of the speaker grille.
It is now big enough that my thumb nail fits.
The grille is no longer flush with the glass due to this and I get "notification bar scratches" all the time.
Took to Sprint in Hou, TX - their display was worse, they unboxed another with same issue. Now in the process of contacting HTC Rep and Area/Regional manager to find me a new phone.
Has anyone else from Sprint noticed build issues that they had in Europe?
(My ports were also jagged {this issue doesnt bother me}, but my corners matched fine until the gap widened)
Got mine from Best Buy in Houston, TX on Saturday. Build date looks like it was April 9, 2013. Build quality looks to be perfect so far. No gaps. Speakers work flawlessly. Haven't seen any gap develop over the last couple days either. My only problem so far is the capacitive home button being finicky.
How do you check the build date? (I did a forum search so dont hate)

Here is a link to the build quality issues I have with my device http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2209277&page=18 (3rd from bottom) Please let me know what HTC tells you. Will probably call them in the very near future about it. The "defects" are virtually unnoticeable but don't want it to get worse.

HTC 1ST party repair offered to repair and insinuated that they would just be removing the speakers, repositioning and reglueing (nice word huh?)

Unbelievable....great way to keep a customer.....it's obvious that the gap is a manufacture defect and not user related....for a company who has seen better days (putting it lightly) and taking a HUUUUGGGGEEEEE gamble with this phone, I would think they would want to keep the customers they have...word of mouth is either going to save or hurt them really badly....and than throw in the fact that the SG3-S should be coming out on Friday, doesn't make it better for them.

Considering the speaker grilles were glued on in the first place, I don't find that particularly surprising.

ah, I thought it was the tiny gap in between the metal and white part like I have...can you post pics bigjodaflo?
Your gap is between the grille and the body.. not the backplate and the body, right? The former are the only top/bottom gaps that I've seen so far.

Sry to be so late --
I actually felt for the manager at Sprint.
My gaps are between the plastic and speaker grille (I'll take one if the opp comes but my phone is my only high res camera) - When reading forums before launch (US), I read about the "gaps", looked at the pics, etc. and chalked it up as an overreaction on 99% of Units.
But seeing as the gap on mine has gotten consistently worse, I am trying to get mine exchanged.
The Sprint Store manager was really helpful and I can understand her situation. She agreed that the phone should be seamless and my unit replaced. She was actually very nice and helpful compared to her team of idiots that passed my phone around the middle of the show floor poking and prodding and their hands were so DIRTY it was a greaseball when I got it back (If I were a lawyer, I would look into Sprint for unfair hiring practices...every store (1st party in HOU) is 100% African American and Hispanic employees. You cannot get a job their if you are white {I know many who have tried})...every executive in the entire company must be white)
The sales rep who sold me my phone had a bad attitude when I brought it back She also sold me writeright screen protectors (at initial purchase) that only covered 60% of the glass and tried to show me how they fit over the area covering the lcd...yeah the lcd isnt exposed MORON...but I didnt push the screen protectors because I mainly want a new phone, don't want to give them any reason not to help.
Store manager said she would contact her manager and the HTC rep and get back to me. This was on Monday night. Hopefully I will hear from her today.
Phone is easily the best on the market and makes the Galaxy S4 look like a pile of crap. Can you imagine Samsung even attempting seamless construction? I'm glad that HTC has finally gotten their game together. Best phone since Mogul.
Manager still hasn't called me back. Going to return it and demand no restocking fee. Then I'm going to go straight to Best Buy, buy the new phone.
Then I'm going to photocopy the receipts and email them to the Sprint District and Regional Managers.
It just amazes me how anyone can be such a ****up at job that has one task - make the contracted customer happy so he resigns his contract.

That sounds like a good idea. I'd open the box when you're at Best Buy as well, to make sure there are no gaps/scratches, etc. on the exterior before you take it home. Then, if there are, you can just exchange it right then and there.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? I haven't even dropped the phone and there are pretty much no scratches on the phone so I don't understand how it cracked.
I can see where pressure may have been applied to the lens. But I'm so frustrated because I bought this phone because of the camera and I always put my phones in my pocket.
Does anyone know if HTC will cover this for free? And if not then what's the charge? iFixIt gave this phone a repairability score of 1/10 (10 being easiest to repair) so I'm assuming this isn't really something I could fix myself.
Hi
Greetings,
The most easy way is let HTC service centre handle the issue and tell them what has happend
99% Ull have to pay for camera but ask them to repair in warranty,
Atleast you will confident that your phone is new and in safe hands
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using xda premium
I have agree with Shrex. I cant imagine how difficult it would be to find the lens AND replace it without making matters worse.
Either way, I hate that you had it happen. Hope you can get it fixed without a lot of hassle.
In Canada HTC requires that the wireless carriers handle any type of phone repairs, who in turn sends the phone to an authorized repair shop.I sent the phone out today. I may have been misleading with what I said so I should say that it is the PLASTIC piece that covers the lens that has been cracked.
With that being said, lets hope the repair is cheap. Otherwise I will not be a happy camper.
Hello everyone,
I was about to buy the htc one, but they are out of stock atm.
so went home watch some reviews and stumble across this video
..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWWYc7ICUxI
He mentions a lot of build quality problems.
Can people with the phone confirm this?
Screen problem with light coming from the edge? dust on screen because of that? Sounds like a big problem, hope its just his model.
Also input lags, is he exaggerating things ? or can it be fixed by a buildprop command?

I have seen 4 HTC Ones. 2 with gaps and 2 without. You can return them and just state that is has build defect. Some stores will let you exchange it once and some twice but they will not keep opening boxes until you find a perfect one. The best advice I can give you is to open it in the store with a sales assistant present so they can see that it has a defect. And before you hand over your money be sure to ask if you can return it if there's a defect once they say okay for returning with defects, then open it in front of them.
Death grip?
THanks for the advice i'll definitely do that !
i saw another video who mention the death grip like with the iphone.

can u guys confirm this?
No death grip here there are always going to be people who find faults. I mean if that's all you look for you are bound to find something. I suggest you chill and get the One open it up and just love it for what it is. You will not be disappointed.

Yes there are manufacture default. Gaps in casing, and screen that isnt glued on properly and doesnt flush with the casing.
Dust under the screen has been a problem with some phones by HTC for years.. was a common problem as far back as Nexus One. That HTC havent plugged the problem yet is beyond me. I think it will be less problematic with the one because alu case is sturdy and does not bend which caused screen sealing to crack on plastic.casings.
