So!
Yesterday was an eventful day for me. I got my Nexus One with FRF91 shipped on it and started rooting it. By about 7pm, I had an unbootable device that would load the X symbol at the beginning but then gave a black screen for recovery and the main ROM itself.
If I slid my finger across the screen, I felt the unlock vibration. Turns out, I had put a boot.img on the phone for a AMOLED device and Vodafone had given me an SLCD device!
Eventually, I managed to get Amons SLCD recovery on there and got the shipped FRF91 Korean ROM (Vodafone one wouldn't apply).
I now have my phone in a working state again.
What I want to know, and this is to all the Nexus One devs, is it possible to crack open the stock ROM that has SLCD support and implement this support into your ROMs. So basically as an example Cyan could make an AMOLED version and a SLCD version.
The theory behind it seems like it should be straight forward. Surely it someone could put something together. Perhaps Paul @ Modaco or Cyan could try and just whack together a non root custom ROM just to see if it's possible.
Alternatively, if one of them gives me the guidance, I'll do it myself but I figure more people will test theirs than mine
What does everybody think?
The commits are there, you just need it compiled in the kernel.
Exactly, I just have no idea how to do anything like that! Haha.
I am from the U.S. and I just got my N1 replacement under warranty. After comparing with my existing one I determined that my new replacement is the SLCD version. I guess I gotta be careful with flashing custom ROMs....
will be possibly running into this issue myself tomorrow, as my replacement is scheduled to reach me. Any easy answers for us SLCD guys who love our CyanogenMOD?
God I hope I don't speak out of line, but I believe the nightlies since mid August support SLCD. Don't know if that includes CM 6.0 stable.
CM6 and nightlies support SLCD. The newer nightlies now support the new HBOOT (that seems to come on the newer devices). CM6 you may need to find a modified version (link somewhere in cyanogen forums or in these forums) if you end up having a newer HBOOT (0.35.0017). Evil's NXSense also has SLCD support. Rest I can not vouch for. Kang-O-Rama didn't have SLCD support though I think the creator of that ROM was working on a new version which will include a different kernel which might have SLCD support.
Other than that you need to be sure to use Amon_Ra 1.8.0.1 or PSFreedom 1.1.1 as those are the only 2 recovery images I know of that have SLCD support as of now. This means you can not use Clockwork for your recovery.
Basic info about my device:
Model : HTC Incredible S
Android Version : 4.0.4
HTC sense version : 3.6
Software number : 4.12.720.1
I have started to feel that my phone is getting slow and I read about the benefits of rooting. So, I am planning to root my device. While going through the online tutorials, I came to know that once I root it, I won't get updates from HTC and there are also some risks of ending up with a bricked phone. Some posts said that after the recent android update, the old methods of rooting won't work.
Can someone please post a link or method of rooting my device in easiest way possible? I'd also like to know whether android version/looks will remain same after rooting? As per posts, I won't be able to get HTC updates. What are my options of staying updated in case my device supports new android versions? I kinda like the UI of my phone. Is it possible to root my phone without altering anything else?
Detailed answers would be better.

There won't be any more updates from HTC that's for sure. I mean I once read that HTC plans on stopping the One X after 4.2.2. I think HTC was already extremely generous to give us 4.0.4. Besides, Sense 3.6 is the crappy version of Sense 4 anyways and Sense 4 looks nicer in almost every aspect in my opinion.
Rooting is as basic unlocking the bootloader via HTCdev.com and flashing a custom recovery. However, you will notice that some people have something called S-OFF. Unlike just unlocking the bootloader (which still leaves S-ON), S-OFF grants you permission to certain parts of a particular partition (which I don't seem to remember but what I say here should be enough) and in that way, you do not need to flash the boot.img within each custom ROM (which is probably, the biggest limitation of leaving your phone at S-ON). This is quite a bit to swallow but you'll understand more as you go along rooting and flashing custom ROM plus a bit of Google searching on the side.
As for guides, look at the top of the General Section (you're in it right now!) and everything that's labelled [GUIDE] should be good to use.
To answer the last question, yes it is possible to root the phone and leaving everything as is although there is absolutely no point in doing so. Unlocking the bootloader WILL WIPE your phone clean (ie game data, sms, call logs.....). It would be best to just start fresh. If you are so intent on staying on Sense 3.6, then I would recommend you to either Android Revolution HD or Blackout ROM which you can find more information on in the Android Development section.

Thanks for the reply.
Well, I gave a thought and I don't plan to stick to the sense 3.6 looks coz sense 4 will definitely be better. Can you suggest a good ROM for me? I have heard about Cyanogen Mod. What's your opinion regarding that? They have provided full tutorial for flashing their recent ROM. Does that also mean that I will get the superuser access or do I need to do something extra?

Depends on what you're looking for really. CyanVivo10.1 is Android 4.2.2. Id say I'm only using CyanVivo10.1 for the sole purpose of having a theme engine plus theres always more free RAM on AOSP ROMs which Id like since multitasking its pretty essential to me.
However in terms of battery and overall performance Id have to ViperVivo is best. Nik Project_X_Rebirth is also a very good choice but the lock screen ticks me off -.- My favourite Sense ROM is either Blackout or KingCobra although the latter has had reports of not booting past the splash screen for a number of people.

Has it ever occured to you that the S II probably has a CPU that natively supports ion?? And that's why they have Jellybean where as the Sensation does not?? HTC isn't gonna work their bums off to get a device to support ion when they have the newer phones such as the HOX and the One.

okay, after reading your statement, I have to tell you a thing, rooting out HTC IncS which running on Android 4.0.4+Sense 3.6 is impossible (guys, correct me if I'm wrong) If you want to root it, you have to downgrade it back to Android 2.3.5, which is a VERY troublesome thing.. here's a guide might help you understand something about rooting our HTC IncS! >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1987687

rooting and S-OFF are not the same thing. Rooting is just unlock bootloader and flash custom recovery. That is certainly possible on any android OS. S-OFF on the other hand, you need to downgrade back to 2.3.3 (in order to get HBOOT 1.13) and then run revolutionary to get S-OFF

Sorry, but it is possible to gain root access on the HTC ICS/Sense 3.6 ROM without the downgrading option that you referenced.
Unlocking the bootloader using the procedure at HTCDEV.com will allow you to install a custom recovery such as CWM or 4EXT and then you can flash SuperSu which will allow apps to request root access. With a custom recovery in place, a user can also flash a custom ROM, but the drawback is that /boot partition is mounted R/O in recovery mode, so you manually have to flash the boot.img of the custom ROM in FASTBOOT USB mode.
Gaining S-OFF is another form of 'unlocking' the bootloader and giving you full access to all of the partitions as well as the radio. S-OFF by itself does not necessarily provide your apps with root access. That is dependent on the ROM that is installed.

CyanVIVO 10.1 is amazingly fast and smooth. Although, don't expect the same battery life as sense, as cm is not optimized for or phone.
If you want sense, Nik Rebirth is pretty good.
I personally hate sense as it is ugly, but it has its benefits such as battery life and more widgets.

Uh no, the download link is still there. Nevertheless its still a great ROM with virtually no bugs so the only thing you could be improving is battery life and performance and if you still want more then you would be very greedy to do so because it already performs well in both.

Nup your argument doesn't work cause VilleC2 (One S with snapdragon s3) has JB Sense
It has the exact same chipset as the Sensation but runs at a higher clock. Its got a linux 3.4 kernel with JB Sense from HTC so it definitely supports it.

Ok. with a few people trying to do this i decided to give it a go.
I HAVE NO DEVICE TO TEST THIS ON.
Flash at your own risk. I am not liable for any
problems that do occure from this rom
i may be able to test these this weekend when the girl comes over. if anyone tests these please let me know what the outcome is.
I made 2 different ports going by 2 different guides. i named these beta 1.001 and beta 1.002
These are made from the HTC first deodex and the M4 one mini deodex.
These are compiled on the Newest September 2013 versions of both. trimmed from 1gb to below 600mb
STOCK htc first kernel
No Root
Debloated at&t apks and some useless files
Htcspeak.apk removed (190mb)
TEST VERSION DOWNLOADS
]beta1.001 removed
Beta1.002 Download this versions boots to the boot animation and stalls at HTC ONE Logo
thanks JMZ for the deodex roms.

I tried the latest beta version of a HTC One Mini port by nlsolja123 yesterday. It seemed to have flashed with no problem, but then it doesn't go past the "One" screen. i wouldnt think a cm port would be that hard once there is a htc mini cm rom but we would have to start with a 4.1.1 rom for ease.
maybe a htc one xl cm rom would be ported like jmz did the sense rom.
i would like to know what version the people are flashing and the best one i will keep up and remove the other, any one able to get a logcat ?
i am new to all this so any DEV help is much appreciated.
I tried both zips. After installing (I'm S-On) 001, the phone rebooted, then shut off completely. It did this multiple times. I tried 002, it rebooted and went to the HTC One splash screen, but just hung there. I did a hard reboot, went into recovery, wiped everything again and rebooted, but it did the same thing.

Jmz had a post somewhere about the reason he was able to port Sense to the first pretty easily is because even though it looks like stock aosp under FB home it is still HTC and still sense based. I am guessing till the kernel would need to be worked on to port a cm rom. Also in many of the guides i have read on porting roms it says the port and base roms have to be the same android version i bet that would be the problem here. so till we can get a update to 4.2.2 from AT&T there might not be any luck.

In some sense I agree. But, my old HTC one x, had cm4.3 when only the 4.1 was available. And recently 4.2.2 just release this month for it. Going by the specs of the one mini. Everything is identical except the cameras and the batterys. Same processor, and ram size maybe it could be a hboot holding us back. Would be nice if CM picked up a device and set us up a 4.3 Base .
Alright I'm stand here confused..... Why are you trying to port 4.2.2 from HTC Mini.?
For starters you'd have to use HTC Mini kernel source and add HTC First coding on it to have even a chance if booting 4.2.2... Because a 4.1.2 kernel will not boot 4.2.2.
Why don't you port sense 5 4.1.2 to the device, you would hold a higher chance if it booting

HAS ANYONE tried this rom and been able to restore a back up? or has anyone gotten this to work?
EDIT:
By the way...im no rom dev but using my human logic why not do this:
Get the NEXUS rom. like a stock aosp rom (odex or deodexed) and then simply take OUR stock rom, take the drivers from it, (or from the htc one mini which has ALMOST the same hardware) and put those drivers into the nexus rom. Then the kernel? um...as usual that i have no idea how the hek it is made. But still...is this feasible?

There is Android Revolution HD, im not sure if this is Sense 6 but is is a custom rom as close to stock that you can get.
Just download the ZIP and enter your receovery and flash, it is simple as. Just dont wipe internal SD card..

So I download the zip file on my computer, where do I save it on my phone, bearing in mind it doesn't have an SD card?
Thanks for your help by the way

Just place it on the internal memory of the phone. Don't put it in any folders. Then boot into TWRP, select "Install zip from SD card" (the internal space paritition is labelled as "sdcard" due to the way android works), find the zip and install it.
Awesome, I guess I don't delete the original ROM then?

You would be well advised to make a back up of your original rom first. If something goes wrong you can go back to it, may be hard to find it on the web if you dont.
Best advice. Do a nandroid backup of your Rom now and try a few different ones. Personally I like android revolution hd. If you are going to try that use twrp 2.6.3.3. It doesn't like other versions very much

All done and appear to have no problems so far, using Renovate SixthSense Milestone 2.3.0
Thanks for your assistance and suggestions

Well, I have been using Viper One which is super stable and has got a lot of tweaks... Worth trying. The other one is the InsertCoin ROM

I know you've asked for sense roms, but I would definitely give some aosp roms a try. I've always liked aosp better. That said, it seems like development for this phone leans more towards sense based roms and definitely sense kernels. Only a couple of aosp kernels to choose from. I'm new to this phone (switched to Tmo a couple months ago and didn't want to buy a new phone on payments), but I was disappointed to see that after being out for a year the aosp development was somewhat lacking.
Hey.
I've been given an old htc one M7 and wanted to set up to replace a Desire 626 for one of my kids to use and (importantly for them) to play Pokémon Go.
The desire 626 says it's not supported and I'm getting in a mess trying to root / magisk the desire to try and make it work... So this may be a better alternative.
It's running stock Android 5.0. if I wanted to update it to something newer (one reason for this is Family Link requires 5.1 and newer). Will I bork it so PoGo doesn't work or anything to worry about with trying to get it running something newer? I've rooted and unlocked and S-off'd devices in the past. But never used magisk (never got it working on the desire)
Thanks!
Hi Mate. The M7, sadly never received the 5.1 update. At least in Australia nothing above 5.0.x was ever released.

I was thinking a custom ROM to bump the version up so I can get family link although at the cost of his current favourite game it's a risk!
So looking for advice. Remove family link and leave on 5.0 until PoGo stops supporting that or try and upgrade. The ROMs kicking around seem to go up to Oreo?
