My phone ever since I got it has not turned off the screen when in call. my cheek keeps pressing against the screen and presses thing while in call.
What allows the screen to know when to turn off? eg.sensing cheek on screen or the light sensor being covered up or the way the phone is held.
Is there a setting I should look into?
I have the phone as: rooted, s-on, faux kernel, ruu rom, twrp recovery.
Thanks
Also when I put the phone face down to activate the speaker, the speaker does not turn on.
I went to this site: htt.....p://androidforums.com/htc-vivid/606680-screen-shuts-off-during-phone-call.ht....ml
and they said that it was some corruption with the phone. I hope that not the case and that there is a fix.
If you can't solve this problem try to go "Phone" app then press "menu" then "settings" then find screen off when phone or type of,and put a check! Or if this can't to help you, take wet wipes and clean the part where the sensor is located! NOTE: If you have screen protector take away your protector and clean there then call and try without screen protector!

I had a screen protector, so ill take it off. Where is the sensor? What does it sense (heat, light)?
Thanks
Remove your screen protector then clean the entire upper part of the phone to the middle. Then try to call and tell me did your screen shut off

It didnt work. actually the feature where i flip the phone upsidedown to activate speaker phone during a call doesnt work either. I think sense is messed up. It used to work though. I am stock with faux's kernel at the moment.
I did check the setting for the phone flipping and its enabled too.

The sensor is located at the upper left side of the screen and detects changes in light, I'd recommend u RUU, try to see if the sensor works and the flip for speaker and then root again cuz it could be an unidentified bug of that kernel with that specific stock rom.

I also tried using the app to recalibrate the snesor but it doesnt work, gives me some polling error. (http://allmobilsoft.com/android/a_system/2177-dhd_proximity_sensor_recalibrator.html). I also got a app from the play store to recognize my sensor, but my sensor is unresponsive at 9cm. im not sure if the app works or not on htc raiders. (https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEsImNvbS50aWdlcm1vbnN0ZXIucHJveGZpbmRlciJd). maybe my sensor is busted. I know if the sensor starts working then the screen will turn off during call and the auto speakers should work. so I managed to nail down the problem maybe.

Ahg my friend then it sounds like your sensor is messed up, since you flashed the ruu maybe, if you have warranty they'll give you another vivid cuz it's a hardware error from what I understand. And yes that app is compatible with the vivid. Also they don't check the bootloader when its a hardware error so if they ask you if you rooted your phone, say no, but make sure you've relocked and flashed the ruu. Normally if it's your firs incident like this, they replace your phone for free. Good luck
sigh

Actually i think htc directly can help you with that, I dont know about rogers, but when I had my evo 3d I had problems with signal and they told me it was hardware malfunction and told me and told me to call htc and they did help me with the issue. it was two years ago though but you should give it a try.
Actually... its a proximity sensor that turns the screen off... it sucks... i don't know how to word it... its boolean... so its either on... or off... no in between... I personally tried all the build.prop tweaks trying to get it working faster... no dice...

I've just received my phone back from repair, OTA to froyo immediately
Then I realized that the right edge of the screen is not responsive to touches at all...though it displays image properly
Would it be a software issue? Or should I send the phone back?

Of course it's not a software issue, send it back. Try multitouch paint for giggles, see what happens when you try to paint over on that side.

Definitely not working...I also tried wiping cache and data and same result
I was wondering if it is a rare issue with Froyo and would like to flash another rom to see what happens...but my phone is stock everything and I don't want to void my warranty if it is the hardware :/

Personally I seriously doubt that's a software problem. As far as I know there's no "calibration" to be done on a capacitive screen.
The digitizer has to be faulty. I would send it back and get another replacement.
I have an EVO and found this thread through search. I have the SAME problem, the right edge of the screen is absolutely not responsive to touch input. When I first got the phone it worked fine. I rooted it and started throwing different roms on and thats about when I noticed it. It would happen sparingly and then go away. Using the 'Dotty' app I was able to find out what was happening, I would touch the right edge and then untouch it and it would continue to register a 'phantom' touch on the right edge that would wiggle up and down and the circle would quickly change colors (meaning its moving) but there was nothing touching the screen! This was an easily repeatable thing. Dotty would continue to register real touches elsewhere on the screen but the phantom touch input wouldn't go away. Outside of Dotty, I assume the phantom touch would be going on over on the right and all apps would focus on that as it was the 'first' touch point, and then ignore any other touches. This created the illusion of the touchscreen not working at all. This problem would come and go, seemingly random. I would have to turn the screen on/off repeatedly and it eventually went away. Fast forward to now, The 'phantom' touch seems to have disappeared but I now can no longer touch the right quarter inch of the screen. This renders, mainly, the P button useless, unless I go into landscape mode. Does this also sound like a digitizer issue? Would this be covered under the 1 year HTC warranty?
Hello all, I've got a rather complicated problem I was hoping that someone here would be able to help me with, before I have to resort to getting a replacement phone.
I while back my Hero stopped working after some water damages. I managed to fixed the thing by cleaning it with rubbing alcohol, it turned on and everything, but the brightness setting would cause the screen to flickers out of control, or just go off altogether, until I decrease the brightness to the lowest setting.
Ok, this still works out for me, unfortunately due to some carelessness, I broke the connector on the screen. Of course, the next best thing to do was to buy another screen from ebay. I was hoping that somehow that this would fix the brightness issue as well, but of course it didn't. The phone boots and runs just fine once I lower the brightness all the way, except for one problem: I get no bootscreen.
When turning on the phone, I can feel it turn on because it buzzes once, but I will see nothing on the screen until it gets to the lockscreen. I assume that this has something to do with the sensor keeping the screen off because the system hasn't boot completely to get the brightness setting down? Anyways, I was happy with it able to boot, so I went on to do my normal rooting thing. Everything went fine except I get no data connection after rooting Cyanogen/AOSP, so I used ROM Manager to install the OTA update, and after the phone restarted, it never comes back on again...
I have a feeling that it's giving me some sort of error, I just can't see it because I don't get to see the boot process. I can't boot into recovery either because I can't see that screen either. My only guess is that the light sensor has something to do with this.
Does anyone have any idea how I can go about to fix it if this is at all possible? Is there any way I can revert it back to factory without having the need to see the recovery screen? Or maybe if someone has an idea on how I can do this blind...
I know, crazy problem, but I'm really stuck here, and looks like I won't have a phone for the next few days...
I appreciate any help in advance.
Ouch.... it is alot!
So I hope ur due very soon for a new phone... sometimes u can see old heros for $30 or $40.... but until then...
I think ur best bet is the RUU via usb from HTC since u can't see certain screens and with this method it's just plug and wait Cuz ur computer will tell when it's finished.
The RUU zip file requires that u can load into hboot screen so unless u can, then that's no good.
Good luck

Can you tell me how I can get to the hboot screen? I think I can get to the Recovery Screen by holding [Home]+[Power], although I just can't see it to make any selection/change. Is there a specific button combination to get to the hboot?

I wanted to Re-Install my OS, but i am not able to enter the Recovery.
I am using 4EXT Touch, the screen stays at the count of 0 and keeps looping there.
I even updated the newest Recovery using the 4EXT recovery APP. but No use.
These are the problems i so far found.
The mobile fell just a few mins back and i am very concerned :crying:
Please help
Seems like all the TOP portion things are not working.
The Proximity sensor is acting ODD.
Some times it does not Turn off the screen. SOme times it does not turn on the Screen.

How to Flash the ROM without entering the custom Recovery ?
I disassembled the mobile and checked if there are any loose connectors but didnt find any.

"Fell from 1.5mts height"
AND IT WORKS?!?!?! No broken screen!?? Miracle!!
Best chance is to get a cracked screen/digitizer one on eBay, should cost around $20 or so, and replace the motherboard + camera.

The mobile was having the Silicon Cover so i think it absorbed some force, but some internal parts might have been effected
I dont have any problem with the TOUCH. It works well.
I found no loose connections in the connectors.
Non working things are :
1. Ear phone socket - Does not detect the headset
2. Camera - shows blank screen for a few secs and force closes
3. Proximity Sensor
4. Charging LED
so far i found these issues.
I cant enter the Custom Recovery (4EXT) too.
Please help me.

Sounds like you've damaged quite a bit of it. It may not be the motherboard that's the only problem, and could mean also replacing screen, etc. Unless you're up to that it could be time to let the Nexus One go..

Take a look on eBay - there are some ear pieces available (at least in the UK) and proximity sensors. Then if you follow a video which you will likely find you can manually replace these parts to see if they are the problem
Had the same problem; it can be the ribbon cable which is either loose, or completely disconnected. The bad news is that you'll have to disassemble pretty much the whole phone. We've actually damaged one the of the cables once while trying to do this, so if you try it, be very careful! There is a page online somewhere that tells you which cable it is exactly, just search the symptoms:
1. Camera doesn't work
2. Charger LED doesn't work
3. Proximity sensor always shows "near", as a result -the screen remains black after making a call
UPDATE:
Found the link with the picture of which cable it is:
code.go ogle.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=15291
It's a long page, so just scroll down
My Nexus one also has the same issues!
I know that it is coz of the flex cable. the other thing that doesn't work is the camera flash (when you try to use it as a flash light)
luckiely for me the ear phone does work! i am able to use the phone (except for the camera and flash light) for pretty much everything
as i always make/answer the calls using the ear phones, i dont have to worry about the proximity sensor not responding during the calls.
My suggestion would be to try and see if your ear phone is detected or not (may be play a song) and then use it to make some calls.

there are some dedicated ROMs for usage as Media Players so i thought of it, but no use.
Only possibility will be to use the Bluetooth Headset. (I have Plantronics Backbeat 903+ but my ears pain a lot , doesnt fit will )

I've had this before, all I did was to take my N1 completely apart, until the point where I couldn't see anything else to remove lol!
I then left it to air for the next 48 hours, reassembled and it works!
BUT !
I warn you, if you do this, you MUST make a note of where every piece on your phone goes or you'll regret it at the end!

Hi guys,
My Xperia ZR started behaving abnormally some days back, I put "screentouchtest" app and found that there were random inputs on the phone which made the phone go useless... Check the screen shot attached.
So I tried to make an app that will disable only that part on my screen and I was successful at it... Check screenshot attached. I could then at least use my phone to some extent.
But now the frequency of these random touch inputs have increased and that has made it again go unusable...
Problem is that I made this app as a floating app and whenever user touches other part of the phone , touch below the unblocked area is activated.
SO now I wanted to disable the touch completely over this area...any help will be appreciated.
Sony says it is due to water logging in the motherboard and no warranty will be given.
You are not alone!
Having the same problem here. Random touch inputs on the top right corner of device. I can assure you it's not because of water log of any sorts because i have opened ,checked, dried and even tested the touch display. Its a software related issue I guess which I am not able to pinpoint or understand. I wish someone from the forum helps with it.
water logging? did your phone get wet some time? its waterproof phone and no warranty given? screw sony in consumer court

Sorry to say unfortunately custom ROM doesn't help either. After I installed one just to see if the problem persists, To my surprise it didn't! But after a week or so the pendulum was back to square one. So I had to roll back. I really don't know how to go about this problem I think the problem is because of a bug of some sorts which causes the chip to send signals to the display addressing that its being touched or whatever. Anyway this is just my guess. You can try installing a custom ROM for your device and see if the issue ceases. In that case my problem would be just device specific. Do share your results after you install a custom ROM :good:.

May be there is a problem with the touch digitizer under the LCD panel which is misbehaving. No software can fix it. You will need to replace the touch digitizer along with LCD screen as they are sold as single unit. Check online if you can find the parts and ask any local mobile repairer to replace it. :good:
NO Luck with Custom ROM
I put Android Lollipop (CM12 Port) and there have been no change. Looks like the problem is with digitizer, last time I told local repair shop to replace the screen they said they cant separate the screen and had no clue. But I searched and found out from youtube videos that it can be done. Now all I have to do is buy Screen+Digitizer.
As you can see the random touch strip have moved little upwards from my earlier screenshots. That happened months back. If anyone wants the app I made then let me know. It helps me to some extent.

Where can I buy 1? Online? Link Please...
Since there are random touches on my phone, I made app that blocks this touch... Check the screenshots, I have "Show Touches" Option ON from Developer Settings. This makes all the touches show white marker... So I made app that floats over the screen and wont show any response when there are touches over that area. "Semi Transparent Area" in the screenshot - Touch wont work over that part. App wont completely disable the touch though, if we press other part of screen for that time app gets disabled...

I have this problem too but it only happens if the phone screen get wet
Some time it happen randomly but when i press on the screen at bottom and on led gently it disappear and back to normal
Thank you!
The Float APK solved the major issue of my faulty touch screen in my Nexus 4. There are two lines in my screen where the touch is not working anymore. One of them is having several crazy clicks making my phone somehow useless. By using this app, I can prevent that, which is great!
Two issues I've got:
- the textbox to set the distance from the top is located exactly in the first dead line! So I need to turn my phone sideways to be edit to click there and edit its value.
- when using the phone in horizontal mode, blocked zone turns as well, but the faulty zone is fixed there.
I'm wondering if you might share with us the source code or maybe you consider to make some improvements on it?
Thank you so much for sharing this app here!
thanks for this app solution.
I too have problem of ghost touches. This app definately helps with that and makes the phone somewhat usable again.
The only problem is that some ghost touches are continous (it's like someone presses their finger on the screen and keeps holding it there). This makes action by other touches unresponsive.
Maybe we can find a solution for this in the float app?
Source code for the app
Finally since many of you requested, here is the source code! - Stop Touch - Source Code
Hi there everybody.
Just bought an Xperia Z3+,its been 4 days from now and since i did all updates,my proximity sensor doesnt work and screen stays always off during call and i cant bring it back. And i cant even end or close the call if the other part doesnt end the call.Sometimes it work and sometimes not.I dont use any cover or protection.
Its been 4 days till today since im mad,i tried searching everywhere and every app people advised but none seems to fix it.
Really desperate for help or an advise.I love this phone, but this problem is driving me crazy.
Thank u very much.Waiting for your answers.
If it´s only 4 days old you should take it back to the dealer and complain.
Btw... have you made a hard reset?

Before you do resets or return it, restart it and if that doesnt help do the volume up + PWR button for 5 secs when the phone is on. If neither of these work open up the SIM card port and above the sim card slot there is a white button, get a pin or something and hold it for a few seconds. If this also doesnt workdo a reset via PC Companion and lastly if this does not work just go back to the shop and tell them whats happening and they will probably give you a new one if its only been 4 days

I did a repair with PC Companion and tried all possible apps in play store related to proximity and screen still stays black.Sometimes it comes up,but most of the time it wont.
They will keep it for at last 2 weeks on service.((,.
Im really sad with this as i love this phone and paid a lot of moneys.Never had this issue with any other phone before and this is my first Xperia.I dont use case or any kind of covers

Oh thats kinda sad, you probably got a bad one, they should be able to just swap it if its been 4-5days otherwise I think you will have to send it to service :/ But hopefully after that it will work fine
@lastsamuraial
Try these to see if your proximity sensor is working or not.
1) Dial this in your phone dialer:
*#*#7378423#*#*
This will take you to service stuff. Next, go to:
Service tests > Proximity switch
Move your hand or anything over the sensor which is located to the right of "SONY" on the front of your phone. It should go "On" when it detects something and "Off" if it doesn't.
2). Another test you can do is found at:
Settings > About phone > Diagnostics > Test > Ear Proximity
This will also test your sensor.
Thanks to all for your help, but i send it back and a new one is coming.
You can also use Z-Device Test from the Play store to test just about everything on your phone.
