It doesn't really make financial sense to have the early adopters be able to get a plain Android experience. I mean we already gave HTC our money why would they provide a "software switch" and risk having brick several devices. And I'm sure the carriers won't allowed either.

If it was released by HTC it wouldn't brick our phones.... Also why wouldn't the carrier allow it? They have nothing to lose from it. And lastly, the stock android One is the same price as the one you would buy from sprint or att off contract.

I've always remembered basic updates Froyo to Gingerbread bricking phones and having carriers pull it afterwards. Even recently T Mobile had to pull the LG L9 update to jelly bean.
And I'm sure the carriers wouldn't like their bloatware being removed.

The IR blaster would work actually, it just wouldn't come with a dedicated app for it.
Three of those items, camera/video mix/Zoe are the same thing considering all of that is in the camera coding.
So your list boils down to two things. No flip board and waiting for HTC to modify their camera software.

Here's the google edition rom for our phone. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2371960 The only thing that doesn't work is 3g/4g and with that, that means no MMS either right now. They say that they'll have data soon though!

This should be great, as porting it to the Sprint version should be a piece of cake for the guys at CM. When this comes out, we should have a fully functioning CM 10.1 rom for the HTC One
I wonder if this will be an official ota flash maybe an option for is running sense

Again, I'm still skeptical. It's probably going to happen, but until I see the press release, it's still just rumors.
with multiple sites reporting it, I'm sure it's only a matter of time.
I highly doubt that HTC will put out an official AOSP Rom for the Sprint/Sense versions we already have, but a developer could easily port the rom to our phones.
Weapons of mass destruction too.
They did a story about it and there are not too many benefits about running stock on this.
You lose out on Zoe and Beats Boom sound.
What HTC needed to do was add a shutter button.
I would be more than willing to give up Zoe and Beats Audio (Which is basically just an EQ setting you could replicate in CM) in exchange for pure google 4.2.2 ROM, or CM 10.1
Only if...
I agree with the physical shutter button. One like the evo 3d had would be awesome.
I am very very excited at the potential for aosp...but I would miss zoe.
I hate the shutter button. Always hitting it on accident on the LTE.
OP, thanks for heads up about this

Well, HTC devices are very high quality, after you get past the carrier blocks to root, unlock bootloader, s-off and flash a custom rom, (aosp preferably because its always newer than sense).
But I'd rather get the updates first at the cost of a camera not being as good and ease of rooting.

I agree. HTC is my favorite when it comes to hardware. I've had the N1 and a One X+ from them. This is going to be my first LG. I actually used it a lot. I would use it when I lost my remotes and got too lazy to look for them. At the sports bars to mess with my friends and some other random things. The funniest part of having it was when people would ask what app I used. Mainly iPhone users. Then i would have to explain it needs an ir blaster! Maybe the next iPhone will have them (not) lol

I wouldn't. IMO, the roll-outs for software updates are coming fairly rapidly for HTC with the One. Nexus would get it's updates directly from Google, which has the upside of getting it first, but other than that, and having a "clean" Android phone, there really isn't any point to it for me. To each his own, though...

by the way, last thing you wana do is ask htc one users or nexus 5 , if you need a unbiased view u have to go outside this group and watch online videos and see if its worth it. This always works on people who cant make decisions.
I'm keeping my One and getting a N5. If It did come down to it though I probably would sell it. I do prefer stock android and I like quick updates. HTC is doing a good job, but I like having them immediately. Only reason I'm keeping my One to be honest is the 64gb of storage I need for music listening purposes.

Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Nope! I wouldn't
- way better speaker(s) on the One
- Cotulla is here bringing us Windows goodness ?
- I've heard android 4.4 and snapdragon 800 are the only pro's for the N5, of which we'll get Android 4.4 soon enough and snapdragon 600 is powerful enough
- I love the aluminum unibody too much to let it go
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I wouldn't just cause I like the One more than Nexus 5. Other than 4.4 which we probably will get soon enough there isn't much to make me really want to get the 5. Plus I like having the option of using Sense and not having just different AOSP roms.

I would say no.
I was very keen on getting a Nexus 5.. was sat waiting for the official release online on Thursday, kept refreshing websites etc, but over the weekend I have totally changed my mind as like others have said, the only real big advantage is 4.4, Snapdragon 800 and quick to receive updates.
HTC One is only a little behind on speed, has higher dpi and far far better speakers. Now I like the latest version of Android asap and hate waiting, so here is what I did today and would suggest to others.. I converted my HTC One to a Google Play Edition. I now have a nice clean install, no bloatware, OTA updates, so I should receive my 4.4 update when it rolls out in i believe about 2 weeks, maybe less.
I didn't use blinkfeed or Zoes or any of that stuff so losing Sense 5.5 is no loss for me.
I have a nice warm feeling inside now that my HTC One is soon to be just as good as the Nexus 5 when I get 4.4, until then, I can handle it being a little under par...

According to these articles, it sounds like the M8 isn't going to be much better than our current device. 2GB of RAM, UltraPixel camera (no reference about actual pixel count)

I'm ok with the rumored specs, my main concern is what size battery is HTC going with? Anything less than 3000mAh would be an epic failure.

The phone would need to be a bit bigger for a larger battery. I think that battery life on my DNA is awesome. Although I do run a custom rom and kernel (latest cr-palmer kernel). I really don't think that they should use a smaller battery either, hopefully it will be more advanced.
I have a feeling (other elevate members will know what I'm talking about) HTC is considering going back to removable batteries.

I just wanted a SD. The only real world significance SGS4 has over this HTC in my hand is signal strength, battery, & SD option. My S4 isn't rooted, but signal way better
Keep an eye out on this thread for any potential news of a Google Play Edition S5 coming out.
The only thing I don't like about the S5 is bootloader lock and lack of magnetic charging pins (since USB port is covered up).
A GPE is likely to be the only thing that gets me to spend my money.
Here's the "official" GPE watch thread:

Yup, mine came in last week. It's great. Don't even need htc dev to unlock the bootloader lol.

It's unfortunate that it's only the silver for GPe. I'd much rather have the gunmetal. I guess if I do pick one up down the road I'll just get a dev edition unlocked straight from HTC. As for the Sgs5, I think the new TW is great and I don't see why you would want to get rid of it unless you just refuse to use devices that don't have vanilla Android.

Vanilla android is faster, gives better battery life. Frees up hardware resources. Looks cleaner, straight to the point.

Agree
would there be an unlocked bootloader on the GPE? Get that, flash TouchWiz based if you feel like it, etc? Not sure how it worked on the gs4 and a quick Google search didn't reveal anything
