Hey all,
Since my 3G/H is not functioning anymore on my G1, I am planning on sending it to my brother for him to use.
He has only a voice plan with Rogers, because his current phone is a voice/text only phone.
He is planning on just sliding his sim card into the G1 (see sig below) and continue using it a voice only.
Will this work?
Thanks
Heeter
It should.
Go to "Settings", "Wireless & networks", "Mobile Networks"
Unmark "Data enabled"
Go to "Access Point Names"
erase all the APNs listed
This way the phone can be used with a voice only plan.
Wifi will still work if your brother likes to use it.
Nick
Another thing your brother could do is to contact Roger and have them turn off the data (per use) feature to his account. So, he don't accidentally open the browser and get the per use charge. Especially if he will be using the wifi on the G1.
Hey thanks Nick for your response. That is helpful.
Thanks BA, Since the 3G/H antennae is broken and doesn't work anymore on the G1, I can open the browser, or any other data app as well, and it won't connect. So this is something I think that he won't need to contact Rogers.
Thanks again Guys,
Heeter

That was just a precaution, since you are pretty sure of that then it should be good to go.
Getting ready to travel to the Philippines (with a stop in Japan airport.) What do I need to know about using my phone over there?
I already talked to Verizon, and got instructions. Dial *228 option 2 to update my PRL before I go, switch to global network in settings, and that calls will cost more (about $3 a minute in the Philippines.)
What I couldn't ask Verizon is if a custom ROM will affect me. I'm running MavRom 4.0. You guys think it's safe, or should I switch to stock rooted for my trip?
Also, I got a list from Verizon on how to dial numbers when I'm in Japan and Philippines. Do I need to dial any special numbers when texting? And I do know texting will cost a bit (50 cents outgoing, 5 cents incoming).
And finally, will my apps try to access the network and incur charges for me, like Facebook and Dropsync? Is there a way to deny them access when I'm out of Country and not in Wifi? Or should I uninstall the apps that access the net?

Turn off data? That's what I'd do.
Turning off background data will prevent facebook and dropsync from working but you could still browse the web etc. But that'll also be the case for wifi
Turn off 3G completely. Your running a custom ROM should be fine.
Droid 4 On Rogers Wireless (Canada) - Incoming "Pay Phone" caller ID Solution
I recently got my XT894, Droid 4 in the mail, and hooked it up to Rogers Wireless in Canada.
When I was receiving phone calls, the built in dialer would tell me that "Pay Phone" is calling, the solution to contact the Rogers Customer Care, and have them remove the "Name Display" option.
Rogers has 2 services for call display:
Name Display (which does a phonebook lookup from Roger's Side)
Call Display (the number of the dialer who is trying to dial you)
Most motorola radios don't actually support these 2 features together, so Blur reads it as "Pay Phone". After contacting Customer Service, have them remove ONLY "Name Display". I restarted my phone then everything started working properly again.
I hope this helps someone!
First off, I wanted to say that I'm on the leak 6.16.206
I also got mobile hotspot working on Rogers (this solution may apply to other rooted users running on different providers).
I added the APN settings as defined originally here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20366961&postcount=2
Name: Rogers Tethering
APN: isp.apn
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
APN type: dun
otherwise, any other fields are showing as <not set> OR None
When I tried to add dun to the apn type, the moto UI told me only providers could add DUN types, so I went into SQLite Editor -> Phone/Messaging Storage -> telephony.db -> carriers -> Located the last APN which I added manually, scrolled over to "type" then long pressed that field, chose "edit field" and added dun. Once completed, I restarted my phone. I now have the stock mobile hotspot app working (I had to also disable the entitlement check earlier) on Rogers!

Yup, no LTE though, just GSM HSPA

I can confirm that the Droid 4 works on Rogers. Took a week of fiddling, but it works.
Received the Droid 4 with 2.3.4 installed. Did the over-the-air updates to 4.0.4. Rooted it, installed SafeStrap 3, and installed Olegfusion's CM10/JB ROM (4.1.2), and was off to the races. Shows "E", "3G", and "H" when accessing the Internet.
have you ever try with stock kernel?
I wonder not to update to CM10 right now. I have a problem, it seems to connect, 3G/H letter, bu no tranmition. I have an old jaj, Droid3 working perfectly with same APN records.
Any thing that could help me??

LTE on this phone is not compatible with the Rogers network. If you want a Rogers LTE phone, pickup the Motorola RAZR HD. The phone will operate on 3G or 3.5G, although we in Canada consider HSPA+ to be "4G".
LTE can give you rates of up to 100mbps usually gives you about 25-30mbps
HSPA+ can give you rates up to 12-15mbps I usually get 4-5mbps
I hope that helps!
how hard is it to get Droid 4 to work with Canada (Rogers)?
Do u have to have unlock it and then update to ICS, and then you're all set?

The phone comes unlocked, you just have to load up ICS and throw on the Rogers APN (rogers-core-appl1.apn) and you're good. If you want to do some of the advanced features like setting up wireless tethering and stuff along those lines, you'll need root. I created a full Rogers how-to on droidforums.net, you can view it here :

Yes. They are still blocked against US GSM carriers but will work fine everywhere else, no locks.

Maybe someone can help me, I'm on Rogers. I have this same issue on Stock ICS .217 and on CM10. I can make phone calls and send text messages, but I cannot receive either. When I put my sim card in to another phone, I start getting my text messages. Any ideas on how to remedy this?
Have you tried another SIM card in your phone? Sounds like you have something wired. I would also check to make sure you are in global mode on the phone.

eBay, yes.I got mine as "bad ESN" from a liquidator, it was quite a good deal. Obviously, by now you can find clean ESN versions for below $250.
Anyways, I am on Koodo/Telus. Under Mobile Networks Settings / Network Mode set GSM/UMTS and Select Network must be UTMS only, the default finds GSM which is weird because Telus AFAIK does not even have a GSM network! It has CDMA, HSPA+, LTE even iDEN but not GSM. Before I forced UMTS, phone calls worked more or less but mobile data rarely. Since I forced UMTS I get mobile data everywhere, inside buildings, all that -- I had lots of reception problems with Wind Mobile, Telus is infinitely better.

I went through the process today and got my stock Verizon 217 Droid 4 working on Telus. I verified the Telus APN settings, went through forcing GSM/UMTS and UMTS-only mode, but still have terrible reception: 1-2 bars, -100dbM. Any thoughts for getting better signal?
[SOLVED] DROID 4 Canada SMS/voice only, no data on Rogers/Fido - help!
SOLVED! see below.
Droid 4 from Ebay, $135 or something + shipping. Replacing my string of bad luck with i927's from smartphone_wholesale (aka Cell Phone Forever) on ebay (tho the 1st one they sent was great til i lost it).
SMS/Voice is fine but cannot do any cell data on it. Following all settings on fido's site for APNs the fido-core-appl1.apn doesnt work. Had to manually put it in (APN list was blank). Tried my wife's Roger's sim, it populated the APN list itself (4 of them, all combos of internet w or w/o MMS, and rogers +/- 'internet' in the name). None of them work either (they match what's in the fora here and on the rogers site, rogers-core-appl1.apn etc).
Im a bit of a newb: is my phone not unlocked properly or something? What gives? Radio is set to global or GSM/UMTS (CDMA doenst work of course). What's the solution here?
System version: 98.72.18.XT894.Verizon.en.US
Android Version: 4.1.2
Baseband Version: CMDA_N_05.25.00R LTEDC_UI_09.1D.00
Kernel: 3.0.8-g473e586
Build #: 9.8.20-72_VZW-18 Feb 8 13:11:57 2013
yes mobile data is on (and roaming set to yes but phone states it's not roaming now)
every time i've added apn's and saved i've rebooted (and rebooted twice with wife's SIM in too, in case settings had to go sim -> phone + reboot, etc). No luck any way ive tried.
Thanks for help.
[UPDATE]
belay that request cadet!
Ok I just removed the wife's sim and put mine in, rebooted, and this sim (fido) doesnt populate the APN list. I was in the middle of inputting settings for it, hadn't finished and a buncha text+ came in and wifi is off (I saw I was on Edge, big blue E on status bar). Then before I could even react I had hit save, and data turned off.
Yep, removing "internet" from the APN 'type' works fine. Leave it blank.
W t f. Maybe someone can explain that shiz to me.
sorry for my english (using Google Translate)
lyumia 822 unlocked: GSM use the SIM card - not working "Internet Sharing" (tethering). Why? What can be done?
What's the error message? "Not working" tells us nothing much.
Also, isn't the 822 primarily a CDMA phone? I mean, yeah it has a SIM slot and apparently it supports GSM as well, but it seems odd to buy a phone that's basically a CDMA variant instead of one that's intended primarily for GSM networks.
One quick check: is your data connection working in general at all? You might have to tell it to use the GSM network instead of looking for a CDMA one.

Verizon 822 is a LTE phone, all Verizon LTE phones NEED a SIM card to run (Verizon is changing to a full SIM card model with LTE...it's about time) and it is factory unlocked (All Verizon LTE phones are SIM unlocked).
To the OP, the Verizon 822 has internet sharing disabled from the carrier, the only way to enable it is to contact Verizon on their network to use it. I know of no hacks of any type to enable it (if someone knows, let me know, I am interested too)
It seems to work fine out of box on the 928, but I have no idea if that is actually hard coded. I remember that for WP7, everyone had to download
JerryJiang's Tethering unlocker for Verizon Trophy.

By FCC law they are supposed to either use the 000000 code or 123456. Its because of one of the bands they use require this as well as all devices being carrier unlocked. It seems though they moved the settings into the sim, so the only way it might be able to be modified is through the Qualcomm boot loader which hasn't been pursued yet.

Just sharing my experience, running 8.1 on nokia lumia 822 in Guatemala with TIGO operator and was having the same issue reported on first post, internet sharing option just hanged and it did not work, today I just install access point app, made sure my TIGO APN settings were detected just by opening and seeing it, went to internet sharing and it finally worked. easier that what expected it was going to be.
I currently have a windows phone 7 that I unlocked to allow WiFi tethering. I'm looking into vetting a lumia phone, however I don't want to change my plan.

I'm not sure if AT&T devices allow for tethering as is. If I'm correct, then this needs to be enabled by the carrier. I had this issue with my T-Mo 8X. It was on T-Mo, and tethering worked, then I went to Family Mobile, and it wouldn't. I'm currently on MetroPCS, and they allow tethering so its enabled once again. Same thing with Visual Voicemail.

Sometimes its carrier dependent, sometimes its device dependent. If you switch to a subsidiary of your original carrier it will sometimes work. On WP7 there were tutorials to do this, but since the 4G/LTE switch things have been changed on the backend where it checks for "entitlement". Android hackers that have experience with how the process occurs won't help us....
AT&T allows tethering if you pay for a large data plan. My sister has a Windows Phone 8 and if she tries to enable tethering on it is says to call AT&T to activate it.
When I looked at it, it was more specific saying that you need a data plan that allows it.
In a pinch, you could use Tether-X I suppose. I've used it in those situations, and it worked fine for my needs.
I got the ATT 920 around September last year.
Day 2, I flashed it with the unbranded French ROM to get Amber and GDR2. There is a thread over at WPCentral regarding that flash procedure and there was a weird trick that enabled tethering. I dont remember the exact procedure, but I think it involved downloading the Spanish keyboard (as random as it sounds it worked.)
So I enjoyed the ability to tether, but my 300 MB plan didn't make it practical. With the Black update, my tethering was back to normal (meaning not working) but I heard of people getting it back by hard resetting their phone and doing something. I'm not sure off the top of my head.

As you have experience with this app, can you let me know if a tablet or iPod can be tethered to your phone?
It's rare, but on occasion I allow some other things to connect to my phone such as a deactivated android phone. I really only need to allow 2 devices at once as a minimal.
To answer your actual question (which everybody seems to be missing): The only phones we currently have that has the required unlock level to change stuff like that are the Huawei W1 (maybe others than the W1?) which is very low-end, and the Samsung ATIV line (ATIV S, etc.) which are pretty good although not on the same level as the new top-end Nokia devices (they were good at launch, but are now about a year old). Still far more powerful than any WP7 device, though.
Unfortunately, I don't know that anybody has found the required policies to set, yet. It's possible, but highly unlikely, that the same provxml used on WP7 could be used with WP8; provxml is very limited on WP8 so even though we can theoretically use it on interop-unlocked phones, it's not very useful. However, hotspot control may be one of the things it's useful for. Otherwise, there are capabilities (normally locked, but interop-unlock usually also means capability-unlock) related to setting those features as well. An app could be written that uses such capabilities. We would simply need to figure out how to do it...
I'm not thinking that would work for you. The Tether-X app requires your WP to be connected to a WiFi network, and the internet sharing is limited to the browser, with proxy set up in LAN settings. As its completely browser dependant with the need to have an existing network to connect to, I'm not sure how it would work for you. There's almost always workarounds to everything though. That app does have a free trial with limits only on the number of connections per month. I suggest try it, play around.
I'll have to try it out on my sisters phone. Otherwise I'll have to really compare what family plan we have now to what the new one that allows tethering.
Forgot to mention I plan on registering the phone with a developer account to get the latest updates from MS.
AT&T is so slow at approving things.
i've never had an issue activating the wifi hotspot on my lumia 920. i pay AT&T nothing extra for this feature; just go to settings, internet sharing, and slide to enable.
I also have this feature on my lumia 2520, and again, pay nothing extra.

What plan do you have? I am on the old family plan.
Did you get your phone from AT&T?
I have Internet Sharing available on my AT&T HTC Titan WP7, Lumia 520 GoPhone version, and AT&T Lumia 920.
Sent from my Nokia Lumia 920 using Tapatalk
Well, I'm on a AT&T Family Plan. I checked my sisters phone, a Nokia Lumia 920, and I got an error telling me to order a plan that supports Internet Sharing.
I have a gut feeling that tethering is controlled, because Microsoft deliberately uses different APN for the phone's own internet connection and for the internet connection sharing. So when you try to enable the feature, phone tries communicating via the internet sharing APN, and in case it is now allowed by the carrier, fails and reports back the error.
I have a TMo Lumia 925 and my main carrier is Telus (in Canada). The unlocked phone used to work fine with internet sharing in Canada, and was giving me wrong plan error when I was trying to use it with my $2/day TMo prepaid plan while in US. After Black update TMo broke the internet sharing with Telus as well, so I flashed one of the Latin America ROMs to be able to get both Black update and Internet Sharing working with Telus. However, even with the Latin America ROM it still fails to turn it on with TMo.
I think the Access Point app contains settings for all carriers, and it doesn't let you modify the internet sharing APN. I bet that if we were able to somehow trick the phone to set the same APN for it's own connection and for internet sharing, carriers would have much harder time blocking it on plans that are not supposed to have it.
Well I'll have to really compare my options in terms of AT&T's plans.
In my opinion, its real stupid that carriers would block this stuff.

No, it is not. The $30 3GB DataPro smartphone dataplan does not allow tethering. The carriers typically sell more expensive dataplan which allows tethering. All AT&T brand phones have always prohibited any form of tethering, regardless of smart or dumb phones.
To get around such restriction, you need to use factory unlocked phones. Carrier unlocked phones may or may not work depend on carrier's policy on tethering.
Or if you are adventurous enough, then you can choose a carrier phone that can be de-branded. Good luck finding the generic firmware and tools for flashing the phones. I was able to get Internet Sharing working on Nokia Lumia 520 GoPhone after debranding with generic firmware.
Any idea where to get either the firmware or a factory unlocked phone other then eBay? I would prefer to just get the firmware, but from what I have heard Nokia has decided to block access to the firmware images and possibly the tools as well.
Reason being the upfront cost of the phone.
My thoughts on it being stupid is using AT&T's reasoning for the limitation. There statement is to help prevent customers from going over there data plan. They could just as easily have a warning every time you enable the feature.

Well, that's what every carrier wants their customers to believe. They are doing this to protect the customers, including forcing dataplan on every smartphones they know of without the option to pay-per-use or just a simple data blocked. The customers are too *dumb* to disable mobile data on their *smart* phones.
