Hello everyone, I'm new here and also rather new to anything technical involving smartphones. I'm interested in rooting my HTC One Dev. edition to get rid of some of the bloatware and also to be able to use some special apps like using a DualShock 3 as a controller. How easy is the rooting process? I imagine it might be easier since my phone is unlocked because it's the dev edition? I figured it would be best to ask here as I don't want to mess my phone up and be left with a bricked phone.

I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a list of what Android devices that are able to be rooted. If and when I decide to upgrade my phone I want to get something that can be rooted. Have any of the new devices been rooted yet?
I'm pretty sure theres ways with all of the "worthwhile" devices to get (moto droid, nexus, etc) However with all the new devices emerging I doubt you'll be upgrading to anything that is currently available now, my best advice would be stick with HTC, they always figure something out around here.
This might be the wrong place for this, but I was wondering about the feasibility of there being a WP8 Custom ROM for this device. Right now I have an Android phone but was looking for a cheap WP phone to play with the OS and see if I might want to jump ship in the future with a better model. Right now I have it down to the HD7 and the Lumia 710 as Im on T-Mobile. Both can be had for about $150. I was just wondering which, if either, would have a chance of getting WP8 in some form to play with down the road. Thanks!

waiting for an answer too ...
can anyone help ?
Hi, I think this isn't very likely to happen (or not in the near future), but if there's any device to get WP8 rom, it's most likely HTC HD7, as it was the first WP7 device to have a custom rom, because of it's similarity with HTC HD2, which even now has big developer interest and gets newest leaked updates first (like WP7.8)
I am curious as I have not seen any threads about it yet, are there people working to unlock the bootloader and get S-OFF for the HTC One or have people given up with the new HTC Dev unlock? I know it was a big difference in convenience for our HTC EVO 4G LTE devices if you could be S-OFF instead of using the HTC Dev Unlock so I hope there is the possibility to do that for the One as well.
I am a little shocked that no one is responding at all, I didn't see anything so I am assuming this is not a dumb question?
The other question would be seeking a way to root the HTC One without Bootloader unlock so that we can still at least utilize apps like Titanium Backup, Greenify, System Tuner, etc. This is actually how I run my Asus Tablet because I want to still be able to rent movies from the market for trips. Any info on this being something that others are working on either?
Nobody is answering because nobody has an answer. I am answering because I have a partial answer. Well first of the phone is not totally released yet. I myself don't have the device yet and yeah I'm not living in UK. And yes I am planning on looking for an exploit(root without unlocking bootloader) once I get my device.
So wait for it to be released by HTC globally then try asking again
I know how stupid this question sounds, so hear me out before you tear my post apart.
I found out that if the boot loader becomes unlocked, then there are 4 apps that are deleted (Calculator is one, I don't recall the others). This seems really minor, but he post said that the One would refuse to update from that point forward because of the missing apps, throwing an error that prevents said updates. My fear is that future updates will be a rocky road and want to get some input from the community.
I'm wanting to get the developer edition, mostly because I want to have a phone that isn't tied to my carrier, has 64 Gigs of storage, and not have undeletable bloat-ware. Plus, I might develop for Android later down the road.
Should I get the carrier's phone, or can I put my fears at ease and get the developer edition?
This smells like fart...
Someone correct me if I'm wrong... But I would think without any carrier testing holding it back... Updates would come quicker for the developer edition.

It isn't called a developer edition for nothing.
1st you'll get it bootloader unlocked by default so no more HTC Dev and no more removal of apps.
2nd it is a developer edition. It should recieve updates far earlier than other variants cause you'll likely recieve beta updates which aren't released yet for you guys to test our the firmware before distributing it officially.

Looks like I'm getting the developer edition then. Thanks for the help guys.
Hey all, I'm seriously considering purchasing this device and I think i should understand more about root on it before I get it. I'm currently using the AT&T HTC One X (evita, dual-core) and I've got a very good understanding of the Android OS and rooting in general, and for HTC devices, but not a grasp on Samsung devices. I've rooted and ROM'd a few in the past for friends, but I still am not 100% on them. So, coming from and HTC device and knowing a lot about android in general my main questions are...
1. How/If there is a way to return to stock android firmware (like HTC's RUU)
2. Is download mode just essentially bootloader mode? HTC does it differently.
3. Any commonly known tweaks/tricks that someone coming from a different company would not know about?
4. Anything else I should know?
Thanks in advance!
Seems the Note community isn't too friendly, I don't have much info for you because I too Come from HTC. I was on Sprint and the forums were much more active / friendly. The Note3 has root, but you can do little More than remove bloat and run ad blocker apps.

Hey, I dont see why there was a comment about this forum being unfriendly. I think so far its one of the best out there. Guys are real appreciative to the devs for giving us root, questions get answered without unneeded comments etc.
To answer your questions i dabbled with several HTC phones and the RUU system was good. Odin is good too but a bit more complicated. There are tutorials which can help though
Like mentioned before some people have had build quality issues but thats gonna be hit or miss like any device. Personally mine hasnt had any issues, though i managed to scratch the bottom of my screen already haha purely my fault though.
Biggest thing coming from HTC is Samsung wont unlock your bootloader like HTC. I really miss the way HTC treats ya like a big boy/girl and let you decide for yourself.
One last thing you should know is this will be the best device youve ever had! Have fun with it! Any other questions lemme know

What else do we really need? I mean you can add tons of stuff via xposed and wanum.. and people are working on themes. Even thought touchwiz blows there's no point in owning this device without the s-pen apps.
