[Q] Step by Step Guide to installing a Custom ROM - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'm new to Android and would like to install the Android Revolution HD ROM on my HTC one.
Is there a step by step guide on how to install this while taking a backup incase I want to go back to the original state?
Thanks in advance

I don't think You will find a step by step guide. But You should find quite a nice one in the ARHD thread. Just read carefully first post.
First of all You need to unlock on htcdev.com. There is a perfect guide there.
Then You need to install custom recovery (CWM, TWRP) and You're free to install whatever ROM You want.
Also from recovery You can make a backup.
You will find guide for installing recovery in corresponding thread (it will probably be through fastboot).
But I actually never had problems using guides in Mike's threads and I'm using his ROMs for quite a long time.

Thanks,
I read some online guides but am still a bit confused. What I want to do is:
1) Unlock the Bootloader (figured this out on the htcdev site)
2) Is unlocking the bootloader the same as rooting or do I have to do something else for that?
3) Do a nandroid backup
4) Install the Custom ROM
In the process, how do I get back my apps, settings, and data such as sms', call records, etc?
Would really appreciate it if someone can tell me exactly how to do this.

There is two guide for unlock and flash rom:
1) Guide by Mike1986.
2) Guide by Torxx

Edit: nevermind, guich already posted the two links you need.
But I will add a couple points:
For non-titanium (ie non-root) backup of personal data check out HTC's own backup service (hat tip to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2311969 )
Note you don't have to really worry about backing up apps if you downloaded them all from the play store, those will sync up fine when you config your new ROM with the same google account.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app

Thank you both for the links and information. I will attempt it later today.
I can't find HTC Backup in my app drawer / play store although it shows up in my app list. Weird!
Also, can I still receive OTA updates from HTC on the phone once I have installed Android Revolution HD?

No, you can't get OTA updates unless you're totally stock - unlocking your bootloader stops you being able to receive OTA updates, as some system apps are stored in the data partition, and are nuked when you unlock the bootloader. There may now be a solution, but other than having the correct RUU, I don't believe it's currently possible.

[Q] Migration to Android 5.0

Hi,
I have a Motorola Moto G XT1068 - Dualsim, german version. I unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM PhilZ. OTA update does not work so I just skipped it until Android 5.0 is out now.
Questions:
1) I am using Titanium Backup Root for backing up my Apps, SMS, phone lists etc. I did not get any support from them if and how it will work on Android 5.0 due to the rumors that root is harder to enable. Any other update strategies, which programs do you use? ADB?
2) Which Rom (Fullrom?) do i have to flash in order to get Android 5.0 via OTA?
Thx for your answers
AFAIK no flashing of ROM is necessary as long as you're on stock. What you need is a stock recovery. I reckon you flash that ASAP.
Also, you might need to look into your system apps and make sure that you haven't deleted/disabled or converted to user apps.
Besides these steps, you'll be fine and will be able to update.

You have to install stock firmware and re-lock your bootloader. The guide to install stock firmware is on the general sub-forum and should be here.
I suggest using SMS Backup & Restore to backup your SMS. However, I recommend waiting until root is out to flash Android L. Then you can use Titanium Backup to restore your user apps & data.
I'm running L myself so I have to patiently wait for root. Good news though! The Moto X got a root solution by chainfire for Android L already. This means we could get root soon for Moto G.
Thank you for your answers so far.
I downloaded stock rom yesterday and planning to migrate today, due to the fact that a solution for rooting XT1068 comes near.
I just hope i got the right Stock Rom Version for german version and - always a bit worried that someone has put malware in the roms posted on fileshares.
Now I have to find out the right steps with ADB.
Full wipe, wipe cache, wipe dalvik and restore partition required as I am used to do with Samsung crap due to other mounting of sd card? Always did it with CWM the times before and never had to relock bootloader. But I have also read that locking is not required for flashing 5.0.
Okay, lazy saturday, I am going to find it out myself

Nope, no re locking required. Just do the samsung needful. I had one of its ****ty mobile too. So hi5 there.
Anyways, I don't understand why are doing this stuff. Most probably a flashable zip would be uploaded on XDA the same day or max the next day. Just chillax and wait for the good news to arrive, which I hope is any day now
P.S Oh and also make sure that you don't lock your bootloader at all. Because then you wouldn't be able to unlock it, at least not right now, hence you wouldn't be able to root.

Install OTA Upgrade when rooted and unlocked

Hi,
My HTC One is rooted and Unlocked. I've just received the OTA upgrade but didn't install it yet.
I was unsure to do it or not.
What do you suggest? I've read FAQ n. 24 but still no answer to my question.
Relock and unroot.
If you're going to attempt to take that OTA (which I honestly wouldn't do as you are), you should unroot your phone and relock your bootloader.
Your best bet, since the OTA of this phone has been made into a rooted stock rom, is to simply download that and install. You'll get everything and you'll still be rooted and unlocked.
Hi!
thank you for your reply @MFOsaka.
I would actually chose the second solution. Is the update available on the HTC official website? Can I install through the Recovery as usual for the .zip files? Does it erase something on my phone?

Installing a new ROM inherently requires that you erase most things on your phone (TWRPs default swipe to wipe works great). You will lose all your settings, apps, and app data. However, your "media" will remain untouched (photos, Titanium backup files, music).
I would recommend the 4.4.3 stock ROM if you want to be on the bleeding edge of things, but that ROM isn't "stock" in the conventional sense. Its a port. Sprint never actually got that update, and certain things, such as the HTC Eye app, aren't compatible with the M7 yet.
If you want something stable, I recommended the 4.4.2 ROM, which is the latest available software for the m7spr.
There's more development for the 4.4.3, though, so choose your priorities.
Both of these ROMs are available in the Android development section as flashable zips.
Have fun, and remember to nandroid backup!

[Q] Newbie question about rooting

Good day!
I am new here and I am interested with rooting my HTC ONE M7.
My purpose is to install a certain app which requires it. (XMOD games)
Before I do this I just want to ask a few questions and I hope you can help me.
1. Is it required to unlock the bootloader? or there is an option to not unlock it?
2. Granting that I have rooted my HTC ONE, can I still get updates on my OS if it prompts me to update it?
3. I watched some videos here and learned I need to unlock and then root, is that all I need to get the XMOD games app working?
For now I am only interested with using that app.
4. After unlocking the bootloader, it says it will be back to stock settings, can I restore my backup in my HTC SYNC manager and then proceed with rooting next? or I need to unlock + root and then restore?
I want to restore my back up using the HTC SYNC manager so that I wont have to install the apps and lose some other info.
TIA

1. yes you need to unlock
2. you must be full stock to update, but rooting requires flashing of a custom recovery first, recommended is the latest version of TWRP recovery: http://dl.twrp.me/m7/ then put this on your inernal storage and flash it to get root: http://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/ you will need stock recovery back to update, however, no one is sure if the M7 is going to get anymore updates yet, its pretty EOL
3. see answer 2
4. yes unlocking wipes the phone / factory reset, so backup everything first, unlock, flash recovery, root, reboot and restore.
I need more reading to pull this off without any problem. I've been reading some nasty stuff and I need to be careful.
I was under the impression that rooting is easy breezy. lol
Thanks a lot for answering my questions mate.

[Q] HTC One 831C - Location India

Dear All,
Two days before , I brought the HTC One (32 GB Golden) which on digging the Phone identity came to know the Model no 831C, later after goggling it came to know that I belongs to Sprint Carrier.
On inserting the code of Hardware components, I found few test/s were not passed and worked normally, other issues are TV app is not recognizing the server, Double Tap Screen wake/sleep works depending on its mood, vDM Client error pops up often.
Request all the experts here to please help me out with the Solution as to how can I make it work flawlessly.

1) Which tests didn't pass ?
2) Which ROM are you using ?
3) TV app is discontinued by HTC (HTC suggests "Peel Smart Remote")
4) Double Tap Screen Wake works only when you lift up phone and proximity is not blocked (5 seconds cooldown between trying again).
Double tap status bar sleep is buggy on lollipop (this can be different if you have custom kernel)
5) disable vDM client app to prevent popups (you should also disable other sprint apps like HtcSprintService and Self Service SZ)
First of all, thank you for addressing my query & sorry for delay in revert.
Sir, I do know it’s the Sprint phone, as far your concern on below questions, let me try to answer them as below:
1) Which tests didn't pass?
When I run the all functions test by this code (*#*#3424#*#*) in one of the test the error word in green / red appears on screen
2) Which ROM are you using?
I believe it’s the Custom ROM, which would have be provided by Sprint. Software no is 1.54.651.8
3) TV app is discontinued by HTC (HTC suggests "Peel Smart Remote")
No comments, will try to search the PSR on play store.
4) Double Tap Screen Wake works only when you lift up phone and proximity is not blocked (5 seconds cooldown between trying again).
Will strictly follow next time when I do it.
Double tap status bar sleep is buggy on lollipop (this can be different if you have custom kernel)
Its on Android KK 4.4.2
5) disable vDM client app to prevent popups (you should also disable other sprint apps like HtcSprintService and Self Service SZ)
I didn’t find the option to disable vDM app nor did I found other apps of sprint. May I request you to suggest any alternates for it ?
Now, sir my other query is Is it advisable to flash a latest LP rom (i.e Goggle play edition or the rom developed by Bad boys team here) , also it seems that I am S-ON, because when I enter the bootload screen Power + Vol Down key where three android icon at bottom appears , I read LOCKED at the very top of the screen.
Pl. suggest whether it shall be advisable to do it if so request you to suggest the best ROM which shall run flawless in India.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Regards
Karan
Can somebody help me out with this please.. ??
The snapshots of my device are attached hereby, my only query is, and considering the attached images of device can I flash a Custom ROM on to it? Will that be advisable to do so? Are there the chances to Brick the device.
If the answer according to all the Experts here lies in assertive, which ROM is best, since this is a Sprint Device, I have found on the forum that Badboyz rom shall go flawless with any Sprint device, so may I go ahead with it. I am in India presently so wish that all the apps i.e Remote TV, Radio should run properly.

You need to delete the second and third pictures, there is way to much personal information in there.
The "Locked" at the top of the screen in the bootloader means that the bootloader is locked. If you look directly underneath it you'll see that it says "S-Off". To flash custom recoveries or roms or anything, you need the bootloader unlocked. You can do this using HTCDev, or since you're soff, you can unlock it via adb.
Once you're bootloader is unlocked, you should be set for everything. Flash a custom recovery like Captain Throwback's custom TWRP, get root if you don't have it already, update your firmware, etc. The bad boys xda page has most of this stuff in it.
Note: Your phone is supercid, so you're not limited to just sprint roms.
---------- Post added at 10:31 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 AM ----------
Also, just wondering what exactly were the tests that failed when you did *#*#3424#*#* ?
Thanks a lot sir, I am grateful to you, I have followed you instruction of deleting the images.
Now, last night I did the Factory Hard reset (P+V-DN keys), it went fine, except the data was erased which I never wanted to be backed up though I was haunting of loosing the Sim Lock, but all went fine.
I have my registration on HTCDEV too, and the process of obtaining the TOKENID should go without any hassles.
Now in pursuant to your advise below, will it still be mandatory to unlock the bootloader ? or I may follow the process of wipe/data and then immediately flash the BB's Rom ?
Further, I stand corrected that all the function tests are passed normally, it was my mistake of not placing the Handset on the plain surface while performing one of the test.
Finally, why the model no in phone identity says 831C, and not M8 - May I request your views on this please?
Thanking you once again for addressing, all you guys are rocking, I am here on this forum since 2008, and needless to say "A Proud Member"
All my Best wishes to MEMBERS.

Yes, you still need to unlock the bootloader. After that you need to flash a custom recovery.
After doing these two you will be able to flash a custom rom, just make sure you follow all the instructions on the BB rom page

Hi ssantos132,

Yeah, it looks like you already have root. Try downloading a root checker app from the play store if you want to make sure.

Well thanks for replying. I did that earlier, it says Congratulation your device is rooted. So now when we have concluded that my device is Rooted, the only thing left to be done is, flashing a Custom recovery thru TRWP or CWM right ? Incase if its already been rooted and say if I re-do it, any risk for Device?

Yeah, once the bootloader is unlocked you can flash a custom recovery then a rom. You can't flash a custom recovery through TWRP or CWM though. Download a custom recovery then use fastboot flash recovery recovery recovery.img

I ll suggest you to stick with the rom you are having right now, Take a nandroid backup of the rom, radio and everything else. and keep it safe for future. You will never be able to find them online for this particular phone.
If you would like to help me solve my phone's issue, Please upload the radio. My phone is just laying around in my desk as I have no way to get it to work.

I know about these devices that are being sold in India. I bought a used phone on OLX having same model number with the exact similar problems. I assume these devices are development only devices which don't run a final version of software. I have noticed that most of the issues in the phone are software related. Using my development expertise, I was able to fix most of the problems and upgrade the firmware to Lollipop, however I have messed up the radio and was unable to restore the radio firmware to anything that actually works (This phones come with a radio version that can't be obtained from any online source). If you can provide the radio image from your device, I will prepare a flashable zip to upgrade the firmware to Lollipop which would include the modem you provide, along with instructions on how to unlock the device and flash it to get going. Probably this would iron out the issues that you are facing with your device.
To grab the radio image from your device, use the following command from "adb shell" or Terminal Emulator
Code:
$ su
# dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p20 of=/sdcard/radio.img
You will find a file in the sdcard (Internal) named radio.img. Please upload it and provide me with a link.
I would advice you not to make any changes to the device until I provide you with clear instructions on how to do so. Trust me, I really had a hard time with this phone.
Well thanks indeed for the time you took for replying, Sir are you from India Since the name sounds such ?
Secondly, I am desperately looking to upgrade the Software to Latest 5.02 Lollipop from present Kitkat, my basic requirement is that any ROM to which I flash should at least contain the Stock FM Radio, wherein it should be able to tune in the Indian Radio Station.
Confusing issues which keep me scratching my head is that I have pre installed SuperSU app in it. Also I re checked it via installing the app Root Checker which indicated that my device is Rooted. However as and when I tried my device to restart it in Recovery mode it starts normally after a while , the SuperSU app is not getting started.
Can you help me through please. Favor me with (1) Do I need to unlock the Bootloader ? (2) Do I need to flash the custom recovery thru TRWP or CWM ? (3) suggest best Rom which will working with FM Radio (4) A Layman's User Guide to carry out all the process.

Some guidance in removing ads from BLU R1 HD

Hello
I've been following this guide for rooting/bootloading and removing the amazon ads from the BLU R1. I am a bit new to this but have done it before, a while back.
I just need some guidance on the steps.
I found this page with two methods: http://forum.xda-developers.com/r1-hd/development/r1-hd-amazon-bootloader-unlock-method-t3426104
It says to do the bootloader first (first youtube video) then the flashing and TWRP second....or is this in reverse, to use TWRP to backup, flash and then bootloader?
And then I find this apparently newer version of removing partial ads which allows for background updates to occur: http://forum.xda-developers.com/r1-hd/how-to/guide-ad-removal-debloat-block-ota-easy-t3429555
which also has a bootloader instruction at the end.
Can someone just give me some guidance in steps on what to start with and then whats next, and whats last. is it flash and twrp backup, then bootloader, then the instructions for the partial debloater. I can do the steps listed on each page just need to know which to do in order.
Thanks!!

Hello
I've been following this guide for rooting/bootloading and removing the amazon ads from the BLU R1. I am a bit new to this but have done it before, a while back.

The easiest method I have found is here, it involves converting your R1 from prime to non prime and then directions for unlocking bootloader then twrp and root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/r1-hd/how-to/guide-convert-to-prime-rollback-ota-t3432499
The only downside to this, is there have been no updates yet for non prime(though there are reports of one being released, I have not yet received one) so currently it only has the June 2016 security patches.
If you prefer to follow rootjunkys method he has a firmware on his site that flashes OTA 6.5 with Ads already removed, but OTA disabled after you flash his rom you then unlock bootloader, then flash twrp and root his guide is located here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/r1-hd/development/blu-r1-hd-remove-amazon-ads-ota-updates-t3427303
I suggest you read both and determine the best route for you.

Thank you for the response I really appreciate it!
What's the downside of the OTA being disabled btw? I noticed on my link there's a partial and full debloat file. Was going to use the partial since it allows background updating

If your rooted with a custom recovery like twrp installed its not really going to matter if OTA is disabled, it won't install an update if your rooted anyways
I recommend to convert your phone to non-Prime.

Don't use the other debloat link. It's liable to brick your phone.

For whatever reason, the non prime variant has worked out better for me!! I have bounced back and forth a few times, think im on flash #5, I went back to Prime with your 6.1 restore then updated to 6.5 and then TWRP, root and debloat W/ad block and disabled OTA. I have maintained bootloader unlock through all flashes. I'm waiting for some downtime to switch back to non prime and wait for "promised" OTA. Non prime for whatever reason gives me better results with apps not disappearing from adopted storage. Also since 6.5, I have experienced data loss and sometimes very sluggish behavior requiring a reboot to revive performance. Again all related to adopted storage apps. Not sure what's causing it, I'm using the same apps on SD adopted, but non prime seems to be much friendlier to adopted storage than prime?? Maybe its as simple as one of the July security updates broke something, not sure but there is definitely something going on with 65 vs 12. Hopefully the Devs come up with something better we can rely on . All the Drama aside I know I appreciate all the time everybody has put in on this.
