Looking for unbrickable phones - LG Optimus 2x

I know P990, SU660 and SU880 can't be bricked tanks to nvflash. I am wondering is there any other phone which are as much unbrickable as the above mentioned phones.
Sent from my LG-P990 using xda app-developers app

You can use nvflash with every tegra devices...

You almost right, but optimus 4x can't be used with nvflasn because it has secure boot key and without the key you can't use nvflash, sadly . There is htc one x as well, but if you enter in to apx mode you can't come out of it. The only devices which has working nvflash like our p990 is asus's tegra tablets.
Actually, I am looking for my next phone, becase optimus 2x is getting old. Since I love experiment with phones I possible will brick my new phone. That's why I am looking for unbrckeable phones. asus tablets are unbreckable but they are not phones

Yeah I'm also looking for a newer unbrickable phone..
What about qualcomm processor's phones ? Does anyone knows if they are easy to hardbrick and if they have an equivalent of Nvflash ?

well If you have qualcomm phone and your partition layout get messed up during a bad flash you hardbricked your phone. Unbricking qualcomm phone is realy hard. You need special hardwares and softwares which you have to buy and you have to disassemble the phone completly then you can unbrick hardbricked qualcomm phone.

I don't really know what you mean by ''lg nexus 4..??''
nexus 4 is a great phone and it is true that it is unbrickeable if you have a riff box. I think it is hard to brick any android phone. If everything goes right. I mean that you don't flash galaxy s4 cm rom to nexus 4, or your computer dont get bluescreen during flashing rom, or the electricity from the house don't go out during flashing rom.
If the bootloader and the partition layout don't get damaged you are fine. CWM is always there for you and the flashing tools. But if the bootloader or partition layoutn damaged you are in a big problem
We are lucky with our p990 or su660 because we don't need any special hardware like riff box or spending 20$ to a unknown guy, who probably has a riffbox, to unbrick the hardbricked phone.

That's one of the reasons I bought the o2x.
Whatever happens, nvflash is there for you. I hope more phones will get this kind of options, this way people don't get afraid to flash roms, because everything that goes wrong can be easily fixed.

I mean that nexus 4 is made in partnership with LG... .
Even so, thanks for your explanation, i didn't think it was so hard to work with any other kind of smartphone that is not O2x.
Are u sure that we can't use nvflash with any others tegra phone?

I can't be 100% sure unless I try myself, but as I read the post about htc one x and optimus 4x it looks like they can't use it, or if they even try, then things are just getting worse.
Maybe nexus 7 has working nvflash. I was reading topics about that. So they were able to read back partitions with nvflash, but there is no nvflash rom for nexus 7 like to our optimus 2x nvflash rom. I don't know why. Maybe nexus 7 owners don't know how to do that, or it is not possible. Sadly nexus 7 is a tablet and not aphone

I think "unbrickable" can apply to most new Android phones out there as long as there is an unbricking tool released (i.e. kdz flasher for LGs).
As long as your power button, volume buttons, and USB port are still working, it's more or less guaranteed you can recover from a bad flash. If any one of those break (especially the USB port), then even NVFlash won't save you!

I think most of xperia phones are unbrickable with ulocked bootloader..I thought i have bricked my z1 when i restored ta partition on custom rom with custom kernel and phone wont boot no recovery either then i just used flashtool and reflashed stock rom with reseting customization and saved my xperia phone..And i think only way to brick xperia is to flash rom with sony PC companion on unlocked bootloader

The vol up + down method is used for NVflashing.
I used Smartflash so I didn't need to do that.
@random: Aside for checking for LG USB drivers, make sure that you have the battery pulled out, and you are plugging the phone to the PC with the volume down pressed.
smartflash
but it doesnt react to the volume down : P since what i've understand is that it should pop up a the LG bootup thingy
And it doesnt.... The only thing the phone reacts to is when i try to NVflash... but the nvflash seems to fail all the time by some reason :S in the middle of everything
take out your battery, plugin usb + hold volume down.
then smartflash all the way !
Wonder
i wonder how i smartflash then....
/watch?v=uCHRwKGTZTk] i followed that one, but he's phone react with a LG logo when he puts cable in and press vol down... Mine doesn't : (
Try using the USB ports at the back of your CPU (those that are from the MoBo itself). Are you using WinXP by the way?

Since you got to the S/W upgrade screen on NVflash, your phone can't be totally dead. Try another PC or redownload the flash file, it could be corrupted.

Dont worry, you probably DIDNT brick it
Search for smartflash and NVflash, smartflash should probably do the trick in this case, but in a few cases u need to use NVflash.
But try smartflash first.

Why flashing is so risky ?

Hello
I'm new android and samsung user for about a year now ! I'm just wondering why this flash procedure contains risk while it should not !
I've bought my phone with 400€ and i'm scared like **** to brick it, a normal thing isnt ?
Well what i want to say is, arnt these companies able to create an unbrickable phone in which i can install any android version like in my pc without risking the brick since i'm not touching the hardware part ?
Why these powerfull little things in specs are weak concerning the updating part ?
For me, its illogic to get a 400€ useless phone just after touching to its software part !!!!!
Do you think that its right ?

I believe phones like the SGS are really sturdy/robust and cannot be easily bricked. However if the situation is like a person taking the wheels of an automobile for the first time without any preparation or guidance and driving through a crowded street and thereby generating a huge risk, that is another matter then!
Invest some time reading through the various initiation guides in these forums some of which 'spoonfeed',and you are good to flash as often as you wish without the risk of causing any hopeless bricks etc.
Happy flashing ahead, but after understanding what it takes!
Flashing is risky only if you flash bootloaders. Otherwise it's safe (well it's good to keep USB jig near just in case) as you can always just reflash if something goes wrong. But I think you'll find more info from flashing tutorials.
Sent from my CM'd SGS
It's hard to brick the SGS. You just hear more about bricks, because no one goes around posting "OMG GUYS SUCCESSFULLY FLASHED!!"
The only real risk is if you flash over the bootloaders. The bootloaders are the software that control how the phone gets flashed, so if these are corrupted obviously you can't really flash it anymore. Problems arise if a) you flash incompatible bootloaders (like from another model), b) the flashing procedure screws up (your computer crashes in the middle of flashing).
It's actually pretty unlikely.
Flashing is not so risky process if you know exactly what you do!
Very often the device behind the keyboard screws up the phone.
People need to read and also getting some basic knowledge how the flashing process works would not hurt them at all. That's the key to a successful flashing
Well thanks guys for the answers ! It was recomforting ;-)
But again for me, even the bootloader shouldnt fear the damage !! Well its a point of view no matter whats the thing between the keyboard does
At least Apple knows how to push their customer to update their iPhones ! I had one and i never feared the updating procedures !
Well concerning the odin software does it write somewhere that the bootloader flashing went perfectly ??
Thanks guys ! And is there any super android phone to buy and which its updating still not risky ?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
flashing aint risky, only moment that it could fail is the part when its flashing bootloader and that takes like second of the whole flashing process (or if youve putted absolutley wrong model firmware to flash)
from anything else you should just simply take out battery, put it back on and 3 button to download mode =)
and now with unbrickable mod its even more safe =)

Well... this thing with ODIN is not an official way to update firmware. It is a way to flash ROMs other than what your phone was supposed to receive. The official way is using Samsung KIES and only Samsung KIES. That is fault-free. If anything wrong happens you have emergency firmware update or smth. Don't compare official update with ODIN.

Actually I see more problems caused by Kies in these forums then I do Odin/Heimdall errors. Beyond that, because Kies is kept closed and limited by Samsung often times the user will have no idea why the Kies update failed, or how to resolve the problem. 99 percent of all Odin/Heimdall problems are due to user error or intensely bad luck while the bootloaders are being flashed and there is always plenty of support online for any error. I take Odin over Kies any day.
As for saying that the bootloader should be unbrickable, I know some people have recently been posting hardware mods that create unbrickable Galaxy devices. However, for most of us who are not adept with soldering irons and transistors, the bootloader is no different then the Bios on a PC. If something corrupts the Bios, all you can do is send it to the shop or replace the Bios chip yourself...just as all you can do with a corrupt Bootloader is use a Jig or sent it in for service.

Really??? So, please take your "unbrickable" PC, and unplug it in the middle of BIOS update (in case of laptop:unplug AND remove battery), and you'll see the results.
basicly you can not compare those two situations
Sent from my GT-I9000
Well, i'm talking guys based on information i learned from the unbrickable mod, these guys have created an unbrickable SGS, do you think Samsung or other companies aren't able to do that officially ? Yes sure they can, but they don't want to, aand i don't know why !!
And for the BIOS thing, i'm partially agree that it's also a dangerous procedure, BUT the difference is that no matter what OS you want to install, you aren't obliged to update the BIOS first, and again, for my 2 Years laptop, i remember well that i've installed Vista and 7 quitly without touching the BIOS
Well, this post wasn't a question at first but kind of "debate" bcause i wanted just to know how people are reacting in front of that situation !
Thank you all
So, who forces you to touch the SGS bootloader?
Same time, Win Vista and Seven are OFFICIALLY released systems.
To compare the situation fully, you should assume that:
- you have PC bought directly from Microsoft, branded by them;
- you want to install "homemade" Win 7 and 3/4;
- you are claiming that you are in problems.
By the way: BIOS and Win Vista or 7 are old systems already. Try to read what is planned and developed now with Win 8 and UEFI: Windows 8 Branded PCs Could Prevent Other Operating Systems From Being Installed, and then compare it with SGS.
Simply, Samsung develops the device with THEIR OS on board, and is not obliged in any way to support homebrew systems, possibly because of likely claims of home grown hackers, who would brick their stuff and then claim it as warranty issue. Flashing different OS'es is possible thanks to effort of the people who are not related with Samsung at all. To use an example going further, look here on the HTC HD2 thread. Device was originally supplied with Win Mobile 6.5, but Dev's managed to port Win Phone 7, Android, Ubuntu and MeeGo to this phone.
Do you think that this is supported by HTC, or the persons who flashed Android and bricked phone would claim that this is HTC's fault? Same is with the SGS: flash not even the stock, but official releases via KIES only, and if something will went wrong, then blame Samsung.
So, there is no situation. Just group of people, who have or not the knowledge what they are doing, while flashing.
dude.. its not about samsung and android problems.. when you're trying to update your phone OS, its risky on every phone. unless you know how to do it right. I just read that if your phone brick, you can bring it to life using USB Jig. I never try it tough, cause my phone is never brick.

[Q] Bricked LG P990?

I've bought a LG P990 today, the seller told me he had put the cyanogenmod on it but it wasn't very stable, en he couldn't get the stock back on it, so he sold it to me for a fair price.
I thought i 'll put it back to stock en i'll have a great phone!!
so i tried to flash it, but the phone wont even start, when i push the volume up and down buttons the computer recogniced it, but i can't get the apx driver installed (not on win 7 + win XP) now i'm stuck........
can some one give me a hand with this? is there a way to fix this or am i screwed sorry for the bad english. please help!
search for nvflash, if nothing else works this will.

I put the volume buttons down en connect the usb cable - the message 'usb device isn't recognize' - then i go to devicemanager - there is a "!" bij unkown USB device - left mouse click and point to where i stored the driver - but then i get the message" best driver already installed.
this is where i'am now - is there another way to recover the phone maybe with program on sd card or something?
the phone itself doesn't do a thing - screen black - no flashing lights, no nothing
am i doing something wrong? or is it really bricked?
i think you need a different driver for your device... here you can find the driver that i use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953182
and you might also need the NVFlash drivers that is found here http://android.modaco.com/topic/335...k-rom-release-v10b-dated-1300166062-15032011/
tnx for the reply, but i have already have these drivers..(the lg driver that i've installed i newer though, does that makes a diffrent?)
I also talked to the guy i've got the fone from; he said that he accedently must have whipped te phone memory, is this irreversible?
and i've tried on a other desktop computer with win xp proffesional! (usb on the back) can it be that there is no apx driver on the phone? is there another way to connect and flash?

OK u will have to check where the phone is corrupted. When you switch it on does the LG boot screen start?
I think your phone is bricked. I had almost the same problem with motorola milestone. I bought phone with software failure. Seller was saying that he tried to update phone and it hanged so he sells it. I thought i will flash it and have a great phone. But I tried all of flashing, recovering methods and nothing... I took phone to phone service and they said that phone's motherboard is broken... So I sold it for parts and now I have LG optimus 2x. thats my story It hink you should talk with seller for more details. Also you can try to contact lg customer service. Maybe they can help you
I think that u should try on fresh win7 instalation.Put O2x in DL-mode and connect with computer.

lol sad everyone is doing the same mistake. If your phone is under warranty take it to samsung service center and tell them u set the alarm in the night and in the morning it never turned on. They will change the motherboard free of cost. If it is not under warranty. Buy a better phone instead of paying $100 for a motherboard.
PS: Theres no way to bring it back from that ROM manager brick.

I think because it's installing wrong recovery image. Simply after recovery installed, ROM Manager will reboot your phone to recovery mode. Since the recovery image was wrong and unusable (since ramdisk & configs are different) the phone wasn't able to boot and ACTUALLY stuck on recovery mode.
But what does that have to do with the boot up sequence? Sorry, I'm an htc guy...

simply put, its like a one way door..once u enter into the room u cant go out..
same way the due to bad recovery and wrong mount partitions loading, once u boot into recovery using rom manager, u cant boot out..thus it will result in a hard brick..
I get it! It's all much easier with HTC phones... You can get inside a boot menu where you can flash roms and kernels and recoveries using the pc. In the boot menu, you can go to recovery. If you screw something up, flash a bad rom, kernel or recovery, you can always flag the right thing using the boot menu.

But the most stupidest of questions can get answered on here .
Had to waist money on a nexus 5x all cause no one can explain how this great Lg up tool works but apparently it is a botched process if your device shows as Unknown model with no fix no in depth explanation Lg bridge does not work for a true soft brick it only meant to upgrade a device that actually as a bootable O.S
So where does that leave me

If you would have searched in the kdz back to stock thread you would have seen that another user helped me with the exact same issue ss you. Was ready to turn my phone in for warranty before finding my answer there. Your phone is still able to boot into recovery manually but you have to do it a few times then you install a rom that's saved on your sd card and your phone will boot up. Hopefully you still have your G4 and can try this method.

Your phone is still able to boot into recovery manually but you have to do it a few times then you install a rom that's saved on your sd card and your phone will boot up. Hopefully you still have your G4 and can try this method.

Really I'm thinking not explain to me how my lg g4 phone can boot into recovery manually when i relocked the boot loader through adb.
All I have is down load mode No regular O.s boot no fast boot mode
Its all secure boot error 1003
I download the kdz 20i from auto primes code fire link that's the only kdz for 20i around .
The issue is lg up tool sees my device as Unknown model because I was on a ROM when this happened apparently there's no fix unless you can boot into the O.s and edit the ROM

Did you post your issue in the official LG UP thread or in the back to stock marshmallow kdz thread where the file that you need to get this back to stock using LG Up is listed. I'll gladly leave lg g4 forum been the most un helpful experience ever between 140 views on both threads ..and even from the most recognized devs with nothing but simplistic answers and guides that ive read already yet the needed answers are known ..... must be considered extra work to explain and help out with my indepth matter .The minute you run across a forum with someone who had this issue almost exactly they say oh edit...fixed now .

I actually posted my solution in the 20I thread relatively early. I am sorry no one helped you sooner.
If you used an iternational Rom and have an unrecognized model LGBridge is able to update your phone through update error recovery.

This is impossible lg bridge is not a semi brick or full brick fix tool its a upgrade tool from what I see
lts for a device that's in a bootable operating state allowing firmware upgrade .
It can only read in a device in mtp mode If you only have download mode that doesn't help at all Withp lg bridge The unknown device model issue is only seen with the Other tool Caller Lg up.
I go on and on and on and noone takes my exact scenario and breaks it down .

Did you even try it? My phone was in the 1003 boot error with unknown model in LGUp. I only had download mode. Give it a shot before you dismiss it.

Actually my bootloader was locked at the point I used LGBridge.
Not being able to connect suggests driver problems. Reload them and try again.

No that's not true I guarantee you wasn't
Relocked boot loader u couldn't have been
I am for sure about this and lg bridge sees my device when I choose update recovery error it tells me there are No update errors that can be recovered
So how does that prove it fixed yours when we was in the same scenario?

I made a mistake when upgrading my phone from LP to MM and accidentally left my Bootloader locked when trying to upgrade, nearly bricking my phone. I was receiving a 1003 error every time I tried to boot. I posted this in a different thread last month for someone else who had the same problem.
I had this exact same issue when upgrading my phone. Didn't do it correctly and it took me about 3 hours before I got my phone working again. It was about a week ago on another computer, but I'll try to recall what I did when it finally clicked in my mind.
Download H81120i_00_0201.kdz flashable zip from here (1.6GB Feb-04-16):
http://downloads.codefi.re/autoprime.../H811/H81120i/
Download LGUP and install it. I used the DropBox link in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/h...mm-lp-t3249803
Remember to install the LGUP_8994_DLL file BEFORE LGUP_Install
Download and install LG Bridge (for the USB drivers) here:
http://www.lg.com/uk/support/pc-suite
Select the LG 815 model, the drivers will work. I only used the LG Bridge to install the USB drivers. Nothing else.
OK, now here's where your phone comes in.
Step 1: Turn off your phone (pull the battery if you must, but put it back in).
Step 2: Hold the VOLUME UP button and plug the USB cable into your PC. This puts your phone into DOWNLOAD MODE.
Step 3: On your PC, open up LGUP. The program shoud recognize the phone as H811 in COM3 or COM4. Highlight it and click the SELECT button.
Step 4: Under the "Process" row, select UPGRADE
Step 5: Click the blank space under File Path, it will pop up a [...] [X] at the end. Click the [...].
Step 6: Select the H81120i_00_0201.kdz and click on Start. The program will push the STOCK H811 MM ROM to your phone. This will bring your phone out of Brick mode, but you will have to go through the entire rooting process again.

Once again I was on a ROM when in did all this if it wasn't for that fact Lg Up would see my device model as h11 not unknown
So tell me how to get past the Unknown device model issue due to bring on a Custom Rom when this happened

The issue lies in step 3
The phone doesn't recognize as h811 it is as unknown model
If you know a way around that I'd love to know because every day I Go to snap the phone in half and recycle it as trash I stop my self thinking maybe one person will get that I was on a ROM when this happened and have a solution for Lg up to see my device as h811

That sounds like a driver issue. When I did mine I was also on a custom ROM. I had to manually remove all LG drivers via the Device Manager and install the LG Bridge for its LG USB drivers before the LGUP tool would recognize it. Before I did that it wouldn't even see my phone.

I would like to think that butt LG up is evidently seeing a connection from my phone to the PC it's just reading the device model as unknown because if I unplug the phone it goes back to reading nothing I plug it back in pops up red box model unknown I know it's reading the phone in LG up because it actually tells you the ROM it detects which is Xtreme ROM by micro mod
Not only that LG Mobile support tool read my phone and says software is up-to-date LG flash tool 2014 attempts to flash but fails because it is not compatible apparently with Android 6.0
Nlg bridge when I try to use that tool sees my phone when I choose update recovery error and says there are no recoveries to update I don't believe it's a driver issue I think it's the fact that I'm stuck on a ROM that is edited in some fashion that will not allow the tool to to proceed to the next step and if you look at the LG up thread it talks about a member explaining about the unknown device model issue is due to the ROM developer editing his ROM name somehow
Everyone that has gotten past the unknown device model happen to have an unlocked bootloader or was just trying to do a regular upgrade and still had an OS to boot into there's just no way around this mess
