Weird screen crack, insurance wants me to pay a $200 deductible. - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I dont remember dropping my phone, It is in a case and I have always taken very good care of it. There have been some times where the phone has slipped off the bed and onto my carpeted floor but I haven't noticed this crack until today and I highly doubt that would cause a crack like this.

I feel like this is a defect from the metal frame rubbing up against the phone. This isnt a spider web crack from dropping the phone. What can I do about this? I went to the AT&T store and they had a door lady there, she simply turned me away and told me it was an insurance issue without even looking at my phone. Do I have to fork out $200 just to get this three month old device swapped out?

Just so you know, the speaker grills are plastic, not metal. Not trying to blame you, just giving a heads up. And ATT insurance is pathetic. $200 deductible? Ponderous. Other insurance like squaretrade have $100 or less as the deductible. I'm rooting for you. Call ATT directly and make a stink if you believe that you didn't damage it and it was a defect.

I have started contacting HTC via Twitter and Facebook after a couple days I will call ATT. I know for a fact the phone has never hit the ground hard enough to crack the glass. The phone is always in my dedicated phone pocket by itself, no keys, change ect. I saw the crack today while sitting in class.
Also im unlocked. Should I go through the long process of S-OFF to relock and remove (RELCOKED/TAMPERED)?

No they're metal for sure. Plastic can't get that beveled edge on the side. And yeah, you should probably S-off just to make sure they don't charge you even more. AT&T is useless.

I wanted to get a new one because the gap on top as getting bigger and was told I had to pay $200. I hate at&t.

I'm not saying they don't suck nor that you are mistaken but enlarging the picture and juxtaposing the glass and metal I may see why you are being questioned. It looks like something struck the left side of the crack first moving rightward and also slightly damaged the metal edge in the same direction of travel. The marks line up.
In your defense it's odd that more wasnt damaged if this is true.
Can I be more passive

I wouldn't bother.
Unless the phone is impossible to use, I wouldn't waste my money filing an insurance claim. It is a tiny crack in a non-display area of the screen, I would just let it go until something more traumatic happens to the phone.

Actually, S-Off with revone is really fast. But you would also have to get rid of the words on the boot screen. I think you could then S-On, relock, and send it in.
But I'm with other people. It is not too bad, I'd just stay with it.

Yeah $200 is not worth swapping my whole phone for an itty bitty crack. If it gets worse ill turn it in. I just hate looking at it after paying so much for the phone only 3 short months ago. I have had many smartphones and never ever cracked the glass on one.

Yeah after looking at them they probably are aluminum. I had read somewhere that they were plastic and only the back was aluminium. Nice catch.

[Q] Tips for going Caseless?

Does anyone have advice regarding going about using the HTC One without a case, naked and out in the world, without utterly destroying the phone due to scratches, dings and dents?
I pre-ordered my HTC One 64 gb on contract and Im considering selling it in december and buying whatever Nexus phone google is offering in november off contract, and judging by the nexus 4, the price point shouldnt be too bad.
My tip is don't !

If you want to go caseless, your best bet is to install something like the Skinomi full body shield. It should provide protection against scratch on the body.
get a clear case/bumper
I tried going caseless for sgs3, n2, and nexus 4.
Random scratches here and there. Not worth it!
So what If it scratches. You won't notice them when the screen is on anyway.
a pouch
I'm with you in that it seems a dreadful shame to cover up such a beautiful piece of design.
Personally my solution is to use a leather pouch - protected when I'm not using it and all it's caseless glory when I am

Same here, hate using cases for my phones. Went caseless with One X, then S3 then Note 2, Xperia Sola, then 4s, then Nexus 4, then back to One X (I know, I change phones a lot and now I'm planning to get the One ). What I did was buy those full body screen protectors, I used Zagg for the rear and sides, but used the Spigen ones on the screen so that I wouldn't even feel or see any screen protector on the screen.
I sold all my other phones (except N4 and Sola) near the real value I bought it because it still looks and feels so brand new and until now, none of my buyers have complained (I give them an opportunity to test the phones for a week first, if they need help with something, I help them to the best I can, and if they don't like the phone, I give them a full refund, but I ask for a free snack)

I've been fortunate enough to have not dropped my last 3 phones while caseless.
It used to happen when I would get out of the car, so now the phone is either in my pocket or in my hand when I get in/out of the car.
I always have a back screen protector so that the back won't scratch when it lays on the table.
Keys and change in right pocket, phone in left.
Other than that, keep a tight grip!

It's lovely naked, it's really is, people should have to pay to see it, it's like a peep show!
I'll be getting a pouch very, very soon... until then, I'm holding it like a baby!
This is the million dollar dilemma every time!
I HATE cases, the phone is designed to be held and felt as it is, not with a case that makes it twice the size (some don't I know...)
A pouch kind of helps here, but then if you are using the device and you drop it, I have yet to see a pouch that spots it has been dropped and quickly attaches itself to avoid damage

Everyone saying use a pouch for when the phone is not in use lol. U do know the most damage done to a phone is from dropping it right? You can't drop a phone thats putaway. You can when you are holding it. So pouch doesnt actually make a difference.

It's scratch proof. I have a 1-year-old One X and it has maybe 2 micro scratches on the screen. Almost immaculate and the same as an Xperia on the second day. lol
Edit: Also not sure how could you dent/scratch a phone in your pocket?!

thats only semi true when you are carrying around taking it out from your pocket etc its always in the pouch
but if you drop while using it yes its true
so a pouch is kinda of half protection and protects against the element in pocket/ bag etc
I have one instance though a sharp object went inside the pouch I put my phone on... I'm not sure how many days it has been on the pouch but it scratched my phone like hell. I thought it was dust or something on my hands when it's dirty until I felt it when I was holding the pouch and meh! A little stone made it inside.
I recommend these. They aren't out yet for the One but should be soon. I used them on my One X for nine months and never had an issue. They are wet apply and shrink when dry so tightly that you can feel the raised lettering in the Beats logo. Their shiny though which may not appeal to every one.

Best Buy Screen Protector - Possible to get free FYI - Also Pricematch

Just got back home with my new ONE. While I was at Bestbuy, a guy was also getting an HTC ONE next to me. The girl checking him out said, "do you want a screen protector?" He said "how much" and she replied "Free!"
Anyways, I have no idea why she gave him a free screen protector, but when I was done with my transaction (After I paid and received my receipt) I asked the girl helping me if I also would be getting a free screen protector and she was like "oh yeah... hang on" then she grabbed a Zagg Invisible Shield HD ($25.99), rang it up, discounted it -$25.99 and then put the package and receipt in the bag while asking if I wanted her to install it.
Long story short, just act like you thought you were going to get a free screen protector and you might get one at the end... that is if you ask about it, or say you "heard"
Also, I have an upgrade available but opted to buy the phone outright as I need to get an S4 too. So I asked if they can price match sprints non-contract price of $549... she said no prob, how much? And I told her $549.... she didn't verify anything, just called a manager to come and override the computer, and that was it!
Time to play with the phone now!
got mine free as well when i bought at bestbuy
Yes, BB is offering a screen protector with the HTC One (not sure how long the offer lasts though). The BB I went to had a printed flyer advertising the free screen protector. However, 3 separate BB's I visited would not price match Newegg's (or any competitor's) offer. They said there was a recent policy change that they do not price match "contract phones" and sure enough, the fine print on BB's website confirms it. Sounds like that because the $549 was off contract, that's probably why they went ahead and price matched for the OP.
I too got the screen protector free. They said it was for today and tomorrow only.

I got one free when I purchased my EVO 4G from Best Buy, 3 years ago. It was on my phone for all of about a day before I ripped it off. I just didn't think I could get used to the look and feel. Always good to get free stuff, though. :good:
Funny thing that they didn't even knew about the promotion at the BB that I got my phone from, I had to show them that it was on their website and I took them 10 min to figure it out how to get the code to work and get it to work. I don't really need the screen protector because I got an Otter box defender case with build screen protector but I not liking the cutout for the speakers, it seem I'm going to get dust in there and scratch the glass.

Yeah, through my experience with otterboxes, they will scratch the ish out of your screen. Best bet is to have a secondary screen protector under it or just apply your own and break the one on the otterbox off.

I was thinking the same, just put in the Zagg screen protector underneath the otterbox one, I'm just wondering if anyone has tried this because I'm worried that is going to affect the sensitivity of the screen.
Bah! I just went in to get my pre-order from Best Buy (at 8pm), and the sales rep said they were offering a "discounted screen protector" for the price of $7.99! I was like... I wasn't planning on using a screen protector anyway, so screw that.
Ya this is the advertisement online.

Cracked your N4 Glass? Enjoy it!

You often read here how N4 owners are terrified of scratching, cracking or otherwise scarring the fragile N4 glass panes. (Quite frankly I haven't paid any special attention to mine nor use any screen protectors, often carrying it my pockets together with keys and coins, and the phone has held up well.)
But if you should crack or scratch yours, wear it proudly like a battle wound. A war scar. A unique badge of honor. And I've attached a recent article which shows that people are increasingly less inclined to rush out to repair their cracked smartphone glass and instead relishing in their uncommon individuality.
Remember: No two cracks are the same.
(Care to show us a photo of your cracked screen? I'll definitely do so once mine does. )
Well.....
If mine cracks it's getting repaired ASAP!
But then again I am OCD about my phone(s).
Oh god, why.

That could very well be the explanation for some of them. After all, my read of the subjects the article was referring to tended to be young smartphone owners. Of course history teaches us that trends are usually started by the younger generation. I'm sure the first pair of jeans with knee tears weren't first worn by the 40-something crowd. Probably a couple of young indigant hipsters cruising around town with their well-worn jeans. I doubt very much we're going to see people intentionally cracking their phone screens like some of us used to take scissors to newer jeans to create the same effect, but then again I never thought that my then 60+ year old dad would be at Levis looking at their distressed jeans collection.
Not advocating a position. Just posting the article for discussion.

Many of my friends have shattered their iPhone's digitizers but still have full touch functionality. I've replaced several of their screens because repair shops have quoted them $80-100 and I told them if they buy it off eBay for around $25 I'll install it for them. If I didn't offer they'd probably still have shattered screens just because they aren't willing to pay a shop that much to replace them.
Recently my little brother shattered his n4's digitizer and it wouldn't detect touch on half the screen. Later that day he dropped it again and lost touch completely. So he has to replace it.

It's self consolation while inside their heart they are crying. If my N4 back cracks I probably going to buy dbrand skin, instead of proudly showing how careless I am.
I know I'm super clumsy. So my N4 has been in some form of hard case since I could get my hands on one. Currently loving my Seidio Convert. I'd rather not have to send another N4 back.

My phone is completely naked, not even screen protectors, and I have yet to contract a scratch. Last night I came close, I dropped it off of my bed and the face of it hit the cross-leg stabilizer beam thing (I'm sure there's a name for it, too lazy to Google) of my bed-side table, which is metal. I yelled an obscenity very loudly and panicked. Lucky for me, it didn't even get hairline scratch.
If I were to shatter the back of my N4, I would try to keep it just because, but I know myself too well. Given a week or two I'd order another back and repair it myself. Especially since there are so many guides on here, and elsewhere, that give step-by-step instructions on how to take the phone apart and replace parts. Most are written by people that did it themselves, too so they point out what to look for, where to be super careful, etc. If the front got more than hairline scratches, I would replace it immediately. I would stare at the scratch anytime I looked at my phone and would go insane if I didn't.
"Son, I noticed your screen is cracked. Are you using drugs?"
True that. I'm waiting for replacement parts for the white nexus to start becoming mainstream. That way I can just switch between the black, or white nexus 4 since that is the only difference with the phone is the back housing.
I worry about the youth sometimes...

Crack in my $550 Nexus 4?? Oh no my friend, I won't allow it... I'm waiting for the moment Rhino Shield or Sir Lancelot is able to meet production demand and will order screen protector from them to replace my current one. It's better to be safe than sorry
Have to say I'm with both camps. If I cracked it I'd be pissed off but at the same time as the phone cheap in comparison to other handsets I wouldn't be in a rush to repair it as I need it every day. If I could use another phone then I'd get it repaired (or do it myself).
It was only £289 to be honest...a £500+ phone would be a different story! I'm so anal about my phone I wouldn't break it in the first place, though!
Flip side, my best mate (who earns probably double what I do) has destroyed his iPhone but can't be bothered getting it fixed as it still works...

I will call at&t directly after I cancel my Verizon order for the wrong case. I'll let you know what happens.....
I am on the phone with AT&T and they can NOT find this case in their system/inventory....it's so annoying. If we had Verizon here in Anchorage, I would take back this phone and go with the Verizon variant. I spoke with an AT&T rep who is calling all the stores within a hundred miles to see if she can locate one for me. When she calls me back, I will update this post.
Try some T Mobile Stores as well, I know they give one for free maybe they have some in stock early before the phone release.
I just searched all over google search and NOTHING!!! Sucks cus i always have a case and screen protector literally the instant i take my device out the box. When i saw this case i fell in love, perfect for me at the gym with that little window music player. Just tap tap and change track, lol! Only place i've found this sold is on ebay in S. Korea for $79.99, not worth half that price imo for what the case is actually made out of. Costs probably $5 to make this damn case and sells for $79.99, yeah no deal!
A bit off topic, but while the Verizon rep was trying to figure out what the G2 even was, I tried on this case in the store and was severely disappointed in how cheap it felt.
My main issues are that nothing holds the flap closed so it gets caught on my pocket pulling it in and out and the hinge is the cheapest parts of the entire case, so it "shifts" on the phone. I can't explain it much better than that, but the window cover just sort of "flaps around."
Just thought I would share so you don't loose too much sleep trying to track it down.
Best buy now shows the window case online but its not available anywhere yet. Hopefully this means they are expecting some because I have been looking since purchase also
Just ordered it from Best Buy!!!
It was my understanding that LG wasn't releasing this case the same time the phone was released... Hence why everyone is having such problems finding it.
Best Buy said it wasn't available in any stores yet, but I did just order it from online, and they say it will ship tomorrow... So, I think that is your best best. The only have the black color available though, but they do have it for all the carriers, including VZW .
Anyone try the aftermarket quickwindow case linked below by Coverbot? I may....also doubles as a stand....hmmmmm
http://www.amazon.com/CoverBot-Quic...d=1381338554&sr=8-2&keywords=quickwindow+case
just picked one up from t mobile. taking it back doesnt add 50 bucks worth of protection or features
T mobile sent me one free with my phone. I strongly advise against using this case without a screen protector.
The metal banding around the inside of the window scratched my screen. Granted the scratch is barely visible and it takes some effort to see but I imagine it would only get worse from there so I stopped using it. Anyone want mine?

Unfortunately they haven't. I am sick and tired of waiting, so on Monday I will return the phone and the case to my mobile operator with a reclamation.
Hey Clownzer,
If you still have the white cover could I possibly have it? Thanks

M8's case from the package, where to buy?

I got mine from Tmobile, there is no case included in the package, i saw this video and there was a case included. I like it 'coz it has a plug / cover for the usb. Or is there any variant of that?
pretty sure that this case only comes with the international htc ones, so if you are in the United States you will not get it, which is ridiculous
I think it's because we don't the replacement screen in first six months over here, so they give us a free case instead...
Guys, the case delivered with the international version sucks big time. I am using it since release 04.04.14
- It is not close to perfect fit. The handset could come out anytime easily.
- The part for micro-usb and phone jack doesn't close all the way after 3-4 days. I decided to cut that piece to avoid hassle.
- The ruber looks already worn just from putting in my jeans pocket.

Yeah it's not great, definitely not worth paying money for but I'm still glad they included it. I'm still using mine until I can figure out which third party case I want.
Just sold mine on Ebay. Offered to someone on here but the postage to US was around $15 - obviously you can buy a case for that.
On the flip side, had mine since release day and used as a daily driver and not a mark on it.
Aww! I'll pass then

seriously dude, did you have rocks in your pocket or something, or drop it a million times, or leave it on the roof of your car? i find it extremely hard for that to happen to your case from your "jean pockets." not trying to be mean or anything but i think your story about this case is a little farfetched. all the research i've done on this case has been nothing but positive

I dont know, but looks like that one has no port covers
Have to say mine is a week old and hasn't shown any sort of wear as yet, and this is in jeans and my work trousers. Not sure what the hell happened to the other guys case!
anyway, it was free so even if it does start to show wear I'm not that bothered

I have other friends/colleagues, who have the same problem. It is up to you, if you believe or not. I just wanted to warn other users, who wants to pay for this crap.

I'm sorry to disappoint but my case starts wearing off on the edges too. I only wear jeans and not the tightest ones at that. I never dropped my Phone and i do not have a car. Hence i didn't even leave the phone and case in bright sunlight to heat up or something.
Made a picture if mine few days ago. Here it is.
The case was included in the box for me, as a temporary case, it's fine, but I'd strongly suggest buying a different case if you're going to order one.
I, myself, have ordered a Dot View case, but I'd suggest getting a Spigen or something if you're ordering one.
Here's mine, been in use for a since 27/4, I usually take care of my devices so I'm not sure how it was scratched this much, but that shows how scratch prone it is:

I've had mine as long as you have and... what the heck do you do with your device? Either your jeans are too tight and caused all that scuffing or you're doing something else with it because mine looks pretty much the same as it did the day I got it -- and the flap still closes properly.
I've got it on my M8, and its scratched, port covers doesn't close properly, and doesn't slide in and out of pockets very well. Good for a case that comes with the phone but wouldn't recommend buying it if you didn't get it with your phone.

I was rubbing the case against a rock, the only thing i had in mind was to make HTC look bad. You got me, dude! wow...
Anyway, i am using dot view cover now. THAT is indeed something, i can recommend to protect your device. It is a little uncomortable to write with 2 hands though...
