[OFF TOPIC LOUNGE] The Four Galaxies - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

Here is a place where you can talk about things that aren't specifically about the Sprint Samsung Galaxy S4. The rules of etiquette for the xda forums still apply here. People coming from the Samsung Epic 4G Touch section have seen this before. I asked permission from a moderator first and was allowed to start this thread. Thanks Kenny.

A small example to get you started. It doesn't have to be a tip. It can be something that you wondered about our found out but isn't specifically about our phone. You can talk about other things too as long as it doesn't go against the forum's rules.
I have a Sony MW600 Bluetooth adapter. It's like a USB stick but it's a Bluetooth device you can plug headphones into and the device can basically control the phone. I use it with a stereo patch cable going into my car radio's input jack on the front of it. I use it for music and podcasts while driving. I will sometimes keep the phone locked away and charging while playing music. Sometimes I need the phone when I get out of the car. Everyone knows that if you walk away from something Bluetooth, if you get far enough, it will disconnect. When you go back to the car, it won't automatically reconnect. I had the phone in my pocket when I went back to the car. I don't know what made me not do my normal process of reconnecting the Bluetooth device when I got back to the car. I pushed the play button on the BT device, I previously paused the music with the same device, just to see what would happen. The BT beeped unusually, showed a different graphic on the screen, then paired with the handset and started playing music. Some probably know this already but I stumbled across it purely by accident. Now I don't have to go through the BT menu on the phone and reconnect to the dongle every time I get out if the car and return. I don't know how this would work with other devices. Just thought I'd throw this out there.

Anyone ever notice that when you view a picture with a gallery program like quickpic, that sometimes there will be a split second of a different picture before displaying the one you actually took? With me, it was a picture of the floor before the picture of what I actually captured. If you look in a folder view with thumbnails, the floor picture isn't there.

Good thread. While I have nothing to add about QuickPic, I think this thread will be good for those asking "What ROM are you running" and those kind of questions.
I've also been meaning to start a "Facepalm" thread ala E4GT forum, lol!

Can some one tell me definitively that the S4 can record audio while playing audio at the same time? I may need to start a separate thread for this. I know the iPhone can but can any androids?
As far as bluetooth issues goes... I believe my BT Motorola stereo headset reconnects automatically.

I haven't had the need to, but I haven't ran across an app that could do what you're speaking of. I did research it when trying to record sounds from apps that had some form of drm when playing back local music. There were computer work arounds but nothing on the phone level yet. I was told that the existing android framework couldn't do that.

I was going to ask how many "S4 lounges" we need, but this is in the Sprint forum & the other is in OT, a free for all (500 & 505). You please me & I look forward to this. I've never noticed the quick pic "bug"? Great, I'll be testing this for the rest of my day lol

I've read places that android allows this with ice cream forward. But others say it still can't. Not sure what the hold up is and why android would not want to implement this. iPhone has had this for a long time.

I don't know if this behavior can be replicated in the stock gallery. Problem is, ever since I found out about quickpic years ago, I stopped using gallery. I forget when it was but when the gallery started having special effects like the tilting of the thumbnails, that was the last straw. I tried removing the gallery a while back but then found out that it is used, in some form, when attaching pictures to texts.

I have a question I have had this device for about a month and the battery cover is scratched all to hell. I have not been rough with it or anything I don't slid it around on the back so I don't understand has anyone else noticed scratches on there battery cover

I was just going to pay something similar. No, my battery cover isn't scratched but has anyone ran across a place, preferably on amazon, that sells samsung OEM battery covers? I'd like to get a couple of black ones. I'd search for it but I'm at work now.

Here is a couple. Black http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CXN0HIW/ref=mp_s_a_1_11?qid=1371167671&sr=8-11&pi=SL75
And white http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CPWN6J8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1371167614&sr=8-3&pi=SL75
They aren't specifically for the Sprint model but I would think they would be the same.

I have a small crack on my battery cover. It's bizarre. It looks like shattered glass. I'm not sure if I want OEM or custom/metal.

I've heard that, too. I'm not sure what caused my cover to crack, either. Mine happened on the lower right of the cover. I tried to take picks of it, but it's too faint, even with zoom. I know it's there & it bothers me enough to want it replaced. I'll probably buy both versions & see what works best.

If you do get a aluminum cover let us know how it works out. I'm curious to hear more on the signal issues.

If it were me, I'd probably just get another stock battery cover off amazon and get a case that has impact protection on the inside. I forget the name of it but I got a candyshell case with the grips on it. Maybe the cover was defective from the factory? They sell stock OEM non branded battery covers on amazon. I am going to eventually get a couple because I know the snaps wear out through time when you swap batteries.

Stereo reverse

Hi i have a rooted NC running at 1,1.
All is working fine, but i have a problem with movies
All my video is working with stereo 'reverse'
i'm using headphones, and the left sound is at right, and the right sound is at left ...
It s like that on all my videos,
on my computers all is ok with the same headphone.
Do you have the same problem ? is it possible to reverse the stereo sound output on the NC ? using a APP, or maybe in an advanced menu ?
thx
Best regards
Does this problem only appear with the oc'ed kernel?
No idea, i saw this problem yesterday
someone here have the same problem ?
Ayorosknight, eurosa is asking if you're running the stock kernel rooted or if you are running an overclocked kernel. Is your NC running with defaults aside from the root or have you done any other mods to it. That'll help with the troubleshooting.
Oops sorry,
yes i'm using a o/c kernel (kernel-1100mhz-omap3630.zip)
available here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451
And i'm on Eclair.
thx
now if you could just flash the stock kernel and test your audio that would be helpful

i am running completely stock currently and i have the same issue as well. audio is reversed from what it should be according to the what's happening on screen.
so has anyone else had this issue with the audio channels being reversed? trying to figure out how common it is.
i just finished talking to B&N about getting an exchange, but to say that it's a hassle is an understatement. it started with me going to the store on monday, they told me i had to call the 1-800 number because i bought it online, then one the phone they said i had to go through the whole tech support to try and fix the problem before they would escalate the case to exchange it. i do the whole reset thing and they say if it continues to have issues to call back. well today i finally had time to call back and after 20 minutes of nothing they said that i should go back to the store and tell the customer service person to call their store support line. i flatly told her that if she expected me to put more time into this by driving back out to the store, one in which they had dismissed me already and told me to call the 1-800 line, just to get a properly working device then i would rather her just send me to the returns department so they could issue a rma and i wouldn't even bother with owning this device. sorry, but 4 attempts by the customer to right the problem is too many.
anyway, after talking to the supervisor my new device is on the way. however, if i get another nook color that has the same issue i will just give up on owning one. i'm not going through that nonsense again.
so again, is this a common issue?
Would it really be a deal breaker if the channels are reversed? Why not just switch your earbuds to opposite ears? Otherwise, get a 6-inch 3.5mm extension cord. Cut it, solder back togeher with the channels switched. Ta-Da: poor-man's channel swapper. There are other options...

First off, you do realize that many headsets, earbuds included, are meant to work with the L and R sides placed correctly on the corresponding ear, right? Take a look at your set, if they are anything like the 3 different pair I have then the tiny drivers are angled to deliver sound down the ear canal. Furthermore, with a set of Nike over the ear style sports you don't have a choice as they are made to only fit one way.
Second, why would I go about buying and soldering something to make a new device work like it already supposed to?
Yeah there's optons, which I'll explore if I have to, but don't you think something should work like its supposed to when you buy it?

I think most people who get a defective unit complain... while most that don't have no reason to post that they rec'd a great product. I myself have a flawless one as well. Plus 5 of my friends...
I'm about to be on my third and my patience is starting to run thin. May keep the next one regardless and RMA direct with Asus. Scary that I'm actually expecting it to be faulty and hope its broken enough for RMA.

No issues here.
99% of the noise is either people with WAY out of kilter expectations for a £160 tablet, or are simply Apple shills.
You also have to consider that on forums like this, you will only ever hear from people with problems. Nobody comes here to say things are running fine.
Every device has manufacturing issues for sure, but considering the high numbers of Nexus7 devices shipped, and the rock-bottom pricing, it's actually rather good. Although try telling gutter press reporters like The Register and Engadget this, they will stir up an old crap if it means website hits. Both sites have destroyed their credibility in recent years over desperate fanboy reporting.

Mine is 100% perfect. The couple of people that I know personally with N7's have no issues either. I'm starting to think there is a lot more fiction than fact in these forums.

screen good no dead pixels or flicker or construction problems
headphone socket seems ok
speaker volume in the normal range
only quandary is which gel case to buy ...

Nope. Mine is flawless.
Another 100% perfect tablet here. This is my first tablet and I have to say that it is unbelievable, especially at this price point. I really think that both the hardware and software on this thing gives us a snapshot into the future of these devices.
I already want to integrate jellybean into some sort of home automation system. With Google Now the possibilities are very cool.
Everything is great except looking on the centre of the left long side the screen is like half a mm lifted but don't mind it and wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't know what to look for

Don't know of anyone personally who has one with any issues yet. None of these people use forums.
Via my HTC Rezound
After a few hours fine so far, touch wood.
No dead/stuck pixels.
No sign of screen lift, though I gather this may not be immediately evident.
Don't notice any ghosting.
Thought headphone socket was broken till I realised you need to push a bit harder than I'm used to on other devices to get them to click in place.
Only small glitch was while undergoing a lot of switching between different wifi options (testing speeds on home wifi, mobile tether blue tooth tether etc) settings force closed and sound stopped working till after reboot.
Free content is junk like I expected.
After unlocking bootloader used another email seem to have a second offering of credit. Didn't have card registered so it says I'll get credit when I register a card. Will wait till I have used first credit and know more about any repercussions for this.

Why should someone seek out a defect they wouldn't ordinarily notice or care about? Yes, you can be a hypochondriac when it comes to electronics too. Realistically we all have "something wrong" with us at any given time, and the same thing can be said about your electronic device.
Each and every device (not just N7s) out there has some kind of "minor defect" (and by that I mean doesn't work precisely as the owner might expect). The point is, owner who aren't obsessed about having a "perfect" device don't run 20 different diagnostic apps to try to hunt down that "defect".
I'm not saying every person who complains about a defect is a hypochondriac, there are definitively a select few real issues out there just like their always have been and always will be with every electronic device. However, there are many many more people who will just never be pleased, like those who have had multiple RMAs.
I have had mine since the 17th, no problems yet.

UPS - Professional Delivery at it's best.

Here is a YouTube video of a Nexus7 being delivered. I'm guessing his screen will have the lifting problem...

Unless the package has to be signed, I've seen this before. It's unfortunate, but I suppose in their defense, they've got no idea what's inside. :/
Still messed up bro, is the tablet okay? Nice video set up tho, are you using the Logitech system?
Yes, this is typical UPS. They remind me of the Samsonite commercial with the gorilla beating on the suitcase. I'm sure that Nexus 7 got thrown a lot more than once through its journey though UPS.

That's not a defence. They don't know what's inside, so they shouldn't be throwing anything. The guy should be heading down to the local depot, demanding to speak to the manager, and not leaving without a hefty goodwill and apology gesture.

Yep, I'd be contacting them immediately and show them the video. Ignorance is no excuse. No delivery company should be throwing packages. That kind of defense defies common sense, and is NOT UPS policy by any means.

Wow I would be flipping livid if that was my tab, thank god I have everything delivered to my office, the UPS guy has to come up the elevator and into my office and hand deliver it, also everything delivered to a business has to be signed for. But damn man that sux lucky ur tab is ok.
It could have been worse....
I found mine inside the screen door and propped on the step just outside the front door. I think they are required to get it to the front door and as the screen door on the front of my house is 3 to 2 feet from the main door he's already there at that point. Didn't change my lifted screen but I don't think bring thrown to the floor is a factor, at least in my case.

Wow who pissed that driver off. I've never seen that happen with my packages delivered. Most of the time I've seen them deliver they'll either put right in front of my door or even sometimes behind the table on our patio. Now fed ex on the other hand they're definitely worse. Our normal driver at my work has just dropped stuff next to our office door if we don't get the back receiving door in like a minute.
Wow...my ups Guy usually hides everything under the doormat, so I know they're not just throwing things around.

However, as others have pointed out, the scary part is the one that we DON'T see, namely how many times our packages are thrown around and banged against who-knows-what during the journey from the shipper to us. System reboots during audio playback

I've been experiencing weird issues mostly during Spotify audio streaming as well as during playing local files and a video once. It will play music fine for a couple songs then it will stop all sound yet show that it is still playing. From that point generally if I skip to the next track it will hard reboot. I tried a factory reset already but it hasn't helped. Anyone know my options here? I'd return it but I dropped the phone about a foot yesterday and the glass cracked near the volume buttons, it doesn't go over the screen but it's enough that I couldn't return it now.

You're not the only one. A friend dropped his on Saturday and got a crack all the way across the back/home/menu buttons. I thought these things were supposed to have Gorilla Glass on them... Anyways, you could always go to AT&T's website and purchase the insurance since you're still in the 30 day window, for $6.99/mo, and then pay the $125 deductible to get a replacement...

I'll probably just leave it the way it is since it doesn't actually affect the glass. If I ever figure out how to add a warranty I'll probably do it now so I can replace it once I'm fed up with looking at the crack. Thanks for the suggestions!
After you log in to myatt, if you hover over the myatt menu, and then wireless, there's an option about mobile insurance. If you go there, it gives you the option to add insurance to eligible devices.

Yeah you're right, I contacted HTC first (haha) to see what they have to say about replacing it even though the glass is cracked. Thanks, it's in the box and ready to ship. Hopefully there is some development going on by the time I get a working one back, it kinda surprises me there isn't more interest in this. It's the first Android phone that felt right in my hand, was decently quick, easy to get to stock and had great battery life.

Nexus 5 power button rattle fix....

Right, I may or may not be alone in this but the rattle from my power button was really starting to p**s me off. I could hear it clearly when the phone was at arms length and I tapped the screen anywhere in the top half. I thought it was the camera at first, then found holding the power button still whilst using the phone stopped it. This morning I was using my phone and decided to do something about it.
First can I say this was not any normal rattle (i.e camera lens), you could clearly hear it at arms length whilst tapping the screen in the top half. I made this video because people have told me they have the same issue. If you take your phone apart and break it, that's not my fault.
For those that have this problem and decide to do this, I hope it helps It has made me a hell of a lot happier with the phone.

Ah, forgot to mentiom, this is my 2nd one. Bought my first one and heard the rattle, took it back after 2 hours. The replacement does the same thing and looking on here in the defects thread it seems a few people have the problem. There's no sort of warranty seal inside the phone and the stuff can easily be taken out again should it die for some reason and I need to get a new one under warranty.
nice? possible to change into a higher mah battery?

The battery seems easy enough to remove, so if there were one available I suppose it wouldn't take more than a few minutes to change

Some people analyse small insignificant things too much, surely it couldn't have made an audible noise level outside of a sound proof box.
Did the sales person look at you bemused or did he test the rattle and end up deafened by it?

He agreed that he could hear the rattle. It may not have seemed that important to him in a loud and busy shop, but when you're sat on your sofa in the evening and even the slightest of taps near the top of the screen make it rattle it doesn't take long before it becomes very annoying. If it were just when I shook the phone near my ear or something then I would have just accepted it, but it's the fact it is hard to ignore, even at arms length, made me want to do something about it.

Fair enough I guess.
I did the very same with my Nexus 4. Using tiny bits of tissue. Dunno why everyone is crying about it, its a very simple fix!
Thanks mate
I'm getting my N5 tomorrow, and living in a country not supported by Google Play Devices, it's nice to know that I can fix stuff like that myself
Stick it in a case, that should do it.

I have a case for it that I got off ebay, a clear tpu gel one. It muffles the sound but it is still there, plus I really like the feel of the phone and in the case you lose that.

If you check further down the General section you'll see yesterday I posted screenshots where I got almost 7 hours of screen on time over an 11 or so hour period with the N5 Admittedly that was 99% on wifi, but it's still good

I see....
I think its because my network signal is mostly yellow, whilst yours is almost all green. I wonder if we can change the radios?
eh... my N5 power button rattles isn't as bad as my iPhone 4s power button rattle
not concerned, thanks for the head up tho OP! :good:
The more Im reading, the creepier it gets for me Only because I'm gonna make someone buy the phone for me and send it, so there would be no chance of return if I saw any kind of defects. Just why all these reports of rattles, dead pixels, after vibration weird sound...ughhhh! Was planning to buy it from Carphone Warehouse...
