Best rooting method for unlocked bootloader? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Before I post this post, I did my homework. I searched on several posts posts on Kernels and rooting methods. But they make me bit confused what I should do and what I should do in future firmwares.
Main reason I unlocked bootloader is to keep root whatever firmware I through into my phone.
Since I am on 10.1.1.A.1.307 firmware, What's best and safest way to root my phone (without losing root in future firmwares or easily can regain root)?
There are many methods and I am sure new users and unlock-loaders might find this useful.
PS: Installing recovery is worth for this
Thanks very much!

I didn't rely on a specific thread or guide to follow. Mostly lots of Google, lots of XDA searching etc.
A summary would be something like this, if memory serves right:
- Unlock the bootloader
- Download and install latest Flashtool here
- Install the drivers included on Flashtool under "/flashtool/drivers" directory.
- Select device specific drivers, plus flashmode drivers, and fastboot drivers.
- Download a prerooted kernel compatible with your rom version, preferably one with an included recovery
- Extract the boot.img file from the zip if needed
- Execute Flashtool, click on the thunder symbol
- Turn off your phone, and plug the USB cable while holding volume up
- Select Fastboot mode
- On the right of the new window there is an option called Select kernel to flash, click it and locate the boot.img file
- With all of this done, you now should have a rooted device, plus a recovery.
Corrections are welcome, as I said before, I hope I remember every step.

Why make it so hard for him?
Just download this file and put it on your internal/external storage:
SuperSU-1.25-Busybox-1.20.2

And then flash it through recovery (CWM etc)

Yes, sorry I'm thinking of his "Advanced Stock kernel", which gives the option to root in recovery.

FAQ
Q: Does this void my warranty?
A: Yes
Q: why after I flash CWM recovery do i get a android guy instead of the recovery menu?
A: Read this post for the solution. We said do not apply ota updates!
Q: How can I downgrade my atrix after I unlock?
A: Flash one of the FruitCake Roms
Q: Can I brick my atrix?
A: Yes they're is always that chance. Here are some simple things to remember that can save your phone from a hard brick.
1. Always make sure you have a full charge prior to flashing.
2. Once you are free of motorola stay that way.
3. Do not flash sbf files to restore to stock if you mess up. reflash the CWM zip or fastboot images
4. Do not flash ota updates.
3. After you unlock the only time you should ever have to use rsdlite again is to flash a radio.
4. moto-fastboot and cwm are the primary ways to flash a rom.
5. Again stop flashing with rsd lite after you unlock your bootloader.
6. update to the latest offical ota updates before unlocking.
Q: Why doesn't my mss/smms/data/etc work now
A: Read this thread on fixing your APN's

ceo.htcl,
I am very aware that the information is out their.
but the other guides in general are basically just links to other threads.
this is a actual complete guide.
If this needs to be in general then a mod can please move it, but a lot of the beginners look here in dev and never look in general.

Great job. I seriously needed this Sunday/Monday after I went out and upgraded my Captivate to the Atrix. It took quite a while to compile all the information scattered out there to get the job done.
One thing I would add, which was driving me crazy, once you install the drivers, you need to reboot the computer, otherwise RSD Lite will not recognize the phone. I think this is for Windows XP only.

I would like to add to this thread. I am unlocked with Ken's 2.3.4 Rom on my atrix, but it was very frustrating to get because of one prerequisite step- Tenfar's CWM.
Since all developers are using the CWM as a prerequisite, someone needs to write a clear guide on how to get it. I had to read through that entire thread, and ask for help to successfully flash it.
It was just aggravating to go through that much for a supposedly minor step. It took me 24 hours! BULLSH!T.

ERM. Your kernel isn't stock based. FXP logo probably tells you that you have a CM kernel. Just flash a stock kernel.
Also. This is a Question so it should be in Q&A section.

Well you need fastboot. It can be found around the Xperia section. Just search it. Then download a kernel. Make sure it's the right Firmware for the ROM you're on now. (If the kernel is in a .zip file, extract its .elf or .img file) Place .elf or .img file into fastboot folder.
1. Open the fastboot folder, hold shift and right click in the fastboot folder.
2. Click open command prompt.
3. Connect device via fastboot. (Turn off device, hold vol down while connecting to PC. Blue LED will light up)
4. Type in the command window "fastboot flash boot filename.elf/img.

use sony flashtool it works great, you could also try to connect your sd card with your pc, put the kernel from doomlord on your sd card and put sd card back in. when you boot up phone you just have to press up volume a couple of times. then you will get cwm, then click instal zip and go to the doomlord kernel, then reboot into recovery and factory reset your phone, then flash the stock rom you like and wipe cache, that should do the trick.

yes, it even says so in the bit you quoted. You NEED an unlocked bootloader to flash custom kernels.
Locked bootloader means you can only flash stock kernels
Unlocked bootloader means you can flash all custom kernels and stock kernels
I think it would be wise for you to read the all in one thread before you start flashing things in future...The first 3 posts in the first thread in the Q&A section would be enough
Can I just ask why you unlocked your bootloader if you didnt know how to flash kernels?

Root Guide For 4.2.2

All credit goes to @zhuhang. I have no contribution to it.
Original thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45344021
This method will help you gain root access on the latest .67 4.2.2 update that Sony recently pushed out.
Disclaimer:
- This requires a PC.
- No CWM needed.
- This installs a Chinese root manager rather than superuser or superSU. But I will teach you how to replace it below.
Instruction:
1. Download the rooting application. (This app can root many other devices )
VRoot_1.6.0.3690
http://www.mediafire.com/download/v3...3690_Setup.exe
2. Install the app. This is a Chinese app so I will guide you. Below is a step by step screenshot attached guide.
3. Start VROOT and root now!
4. Now we need to install SuperSU from play store to replace the Chinese root manager called 授权管理 1.0.4.
5. Go to play store and install SuperSU.
6. Start SuperSU and you will be asked for permission by 授权管理 1.0.4, choose 允许(means allow). (Should be the right side option.)
7. SuperSU will prompt to install SU binary, go ahead with OK and it will display successful.
8. Now, freeze 授权管理 1.0.4 in titanium backup, just in case you need it again.
Note: If you uninstall straight away from app manager, you need to make sure SuperSU updated the binary.
9. Re-run SuperSU to make sure everything is alright. You will be prompt again to install SU binary, just do what it asked.
10. After that, you are rooted with SuperSU and 授权管理 1.0.4 will not be there anymore.

Tried with the C5503 kernel. Same boot loop. I think we'll have to find an alternate root method, as unlike the Z, the ZR doesnt have .234 firmware [that is also 4.2]
Experimenting with the Z firmware. Wish me luck
Why not flash only kernel from the previous firmware? Isn't working?
UPD. I see - not work

I have rooted mine already (ie. Android 4.2.2). You have to unlock your bootloader for this method to work.

Firstly you need to unlock your bootloader. Google that, its easy. OR you can do it through flashtools (not tested).
Enable USB Debugging and unknown sources option on your phone before proceeding.
Download Flashtool, Open it. Flash the the kernel of an old firmware of Xperia ZR which was rootable.
Reboot your Xperia ZR after flashing. Connect to PC in USB Debugging mode.
Do not forget to close FLASHTOOL.
Extract the downloaded “DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit.zip” file and run the “runme_win” file.
Follow onscreen instructions to root Xperia ZR and once it is rooted, device will reboot. Verify that you are rooted, run SuperSU app.
Now switch off your Xperia ZR. OPEN FLASHTOOL.
Now you need to flash the true kernel of Android 4.2.2 10.3.1.A.0.244 firmware of Xperia ZR.
After flashing, disconnect the phone from PC, reboot it and your Xperia ZR is now rooted

So basically you're doing:
Use FlashTool to flash the 4.2.2 FTF
Downgrade the kernel by using FlashTool back to 4.1.2
Run the DoomLord rooting kit
Flash back 4.2.2 kernel using FlashTool
To flash the kernel you need an unlocked bootloader. What I don't understand is how to flash the kernel only? I found the kernel.sin inside the FTF file. Can I just delete other .sin file and flash the remaining FTF file?
Sorry if my questions are noob.

You need to keep the kernel.sin and bootloader.sin in the ftf and delete the rest. Also don't delete the META-INF file.

The problem is the bootloader? I thought doom's thread said that this was for locked and unlocked bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader will lead to a lot of people avoiding the root method.

So is an unlocked bootloader NEEDED for this method to work for ZR? I thought DoomLord said it works for both.

I did manage to root it, but then the phone suddenly restarts. Now I am stuck with bootloops. Strange as I managed to install Superuser from the Play Store.
Edit. I recommend not trying to root using this method. Wait till theres a definitive rooting method.

Yes. I fixed the bootloop issue. Need any help with the bootloop?
If you've got a bootloop, pull the battery asap as once it dies, you won't be able to flash ftf and the device will be bricked.
To fix bootloop [and still not get root access]
1. Open the 4.2.2 ftf file in flashtool.
2. Exclude everything [tick in the exclude box] except the kernel, and untick everything in the wipe box [data, applog]
3. Flash the kernel by pressing the volume down button while plugging in USB cable [DONT PRESS POWER BUTTON AFTER BATTERY PULL AS OTHERWISE YOU'LL GO BACK INTO BOOTLOOP]
4. After it flashes [should take a couple of seconds], reboot and you should be back to normal
I REPEAT PULL THE BATTERY IF IN A BOOTLOOP OR YOU'LL LAND UP WITH ANOTHER PAPERWEIGHT

So again you're not successful in rooting 4.2.2 using the kernel switching method?
i think the kernel switching fix will not work on ZR.. we don't have a rootable 4.2 kernel
i think the 423 kernel is 4.2

It happened to me also, but it's possible to recover from it.
Install PC Companion on your PC.
Go to Support Zone.
First option -> Update phone / tablet software.
You will see a underlined link that says "repair phone / tablet"
Just follow the instructions.
You will need your phone to have at least 50% battery level. Take out the battery, insert again, and connect your phone to your PC via USB while pressing the Volume + button. You will hear a sound coming from your PC meaning it's been connected.
Sony PC Companion then will flash your phone with the latest firmware. It takes a while and you need to have internet connection, but it works.
As you flashed the Russian system rom, the firmware installed in your phone by Sony PC companion will be the Russian Android 4.2.2. No problem with this as it includes all the languages.
Do this as soon as possible as you need your battery charged and you can't charge the battery in your phone while in the bootloop state.

I'm not sure what we did wrong to be stuck in a bootloop, but after my ZR being reflashed by Sony PC Companion I just flashed the Nordic 4.2.2 ROM and my phone remains unrooted until there is a easier method to get root

[Q] Rooting Sony Xperia Z .244

Hi fellow mates,
Recently I have updated my Sony Xperia Z (Singapore) 10.3.A.0.423 to 10.3.1.A.0.244 and I was previously rooted on 10.3.A.0.423. So after updating the phone, I followed Doom'sLord method which is:
[ how-to ]
Download the three files from the download section below
open FlashTool and flash the XperiaZ_C660X_KernelOnly_10.3.A.0.423_Generic_NL.f tf - 7.12 MB file, this is JUST the kernel of an older firmware which was rootable
now once flashing is done reboot device and connect to PC in usb debuggin mode
CLOSE FLASHTOOL <<< VVVIMP STEP
extract the file DooMLoRD_Easy-Rooting-Toolkit_v18_perf-event-exploit.zip to root directory on c:\
execute runme_ file corresponding to your OS on desktop PC, this will execute a SPECIAL version of my easy rooting toolkit <<< VVVIMP STEP
the above step is crucial! if you use any older version of the toolkit then IT WILL NOT WORK!
after rooting is over the device will restart
you can verify if device is rooted by checking for SuperSU app (it is the newest version)
once thats done now power down device and open FlashTool again
now flash XperiaZ_C660X_KernelOnly_10.3.1.A.0.244_BE.ftf - 7.17 MB file to get back to the true kernel for the firmware
thats it after flashing is done just disconnect and power on device and enjoy rooted phone!

After which, when I switch my phone on to check if it's root. It seems that it has not been rooted and no super user was installed. Can anyone help me what is the problem? I had USB DEBUGGING turned on, Unknown Sources turned on as well. Latest flashtool 0.9.11.0 installed, latest Doomlord v18 easy rooting toolkit. But still couldn't find whats the issue. Looking forward for help. Thank You
Regards,
Gabriel

@XperienceD
As you had mention, I did follow that 2 steps. After which I had to go to applications and find the Superuser applications, and hit the uninstall button. After that, it was rooted once again. Superuser icon came up, asking for permissions like the usual. Something is wrong even though it's already been rooting. But thanks for the advise. Will bare in mind the next time an update is up. Thanks alot!

Gabriel
Hello, I've tried flashing back to the old firmware from the latest, but it's saying my phone needs to be in usb debug and allow unknown sources, these are both allowed ? im not sure what I can do.
Xperia Z .244 firmware charge issue
Hello all,
I am facing this weird issue with my Xperia Z rooting. I am on .244 baseband but when I tried changing it to the .423 using the flashtool, it didn't change. I tried several times but same results. Thus when I try rooting my phone the script showed not compatible.
Please let me know what can be the problem? Do I compulsorily have to be unlocked for this to work?
facing a problem too, I can not seem to even flash the .423 kernel in flashtool. I keep getting an error saying to make sure debugging in on etc.. And have both debugging and mock locations turned on?? Weird because I have flashed firmwares before on this device.

Cheers for your help :good:
Edit: No latest flashtool didnt work in either 32 or 64 with or without pc companion running???
Just to make sure you have everything setup properly and are following the correct procedure, follow this tutorial for using flashtool - How to flash stock roms with Flashtool
If that doesn't help, I'm not sure what the problem is.

Yes as far as I can tell to the letter? I have flashed firmwares before so I'm lost. I have noticed after a failed attempt I lose wifi.
Im downloading the stock .244 ftf and will try to flash that, I'm not sure if I can just flash an older firmware or not.
Thanks again for your help so far
Rob
Edit: after more investigation my phone was actually on .423 but still showing .422 under settings. All good now and rooted

[Q] xperia z1 rooting confused as ever

i recently asked for help in regards to rooting firmware 14.3.A.681 Model C6903 a noobs guide really since i am still new to it but some of the reply's i got were a bit confusing but all had one thing in common which was downgrade to an ftf ending in .534. The issues making me confused are
1. when i downgrade to .534 ftf i downloaded the Commercial and Generic UK unbranded versions and to my surprise my SIM Card wasn't detected i really dont know why :/
2.the next issue was reply's from some members regarding the next step which was after downgrading install xddualrecovery others also said root the .534 firmware first then install xddualrecovery and i noticed with some versions of xddualrecovery there's a 3rd option called "Install on non root" now my question here is, that option will it root and install a recovery on my phone such as CWM or TWRP and if yes why do i need a recovery am just rooting and truly do not wish to backup any data on phone or SD Card or install custom roms in future
3.the next issue was SuperSU after doing some googling on it i realized its an apk for root but i thought rooting will give me superuser access so my do i need that and why does xddualrecovery have an option of install SuperSU on rooted phone
4. the next issue is flashable ftf's or zip and stripped ftf's or zip and how is it different from regular or Stock ftf's and also why do i need to flash a flashable zip or ftf in say TWRP recovery and after powering off flash it again with the flashtool as some members suggested ?
5. the next issue is if its really required to install a recovery such as CWM or TWRP to get root access how do i unroot and get back default Stock firmware
6. what is locked and unlock bootloader ? and how do i know if mine is locked or unlocked some members made statements regarding that
all these issues especially my SIM Card not being detected made downgrade to C6903_14.2.A.0.290_Generic MY_1276-7939_R1B before my sim card started functioning and my last question is how to root 14.2.A.0.290 since it seems kitkat rooting is quite complicated and i hope rooting 14.2.A.0.290 would not require a downgrade
All answers are in Z1 Section. Read carefully, it is simply. To me look like you don't agree with the method to get root, than stay stock if you don't like it. There is no other ways.

Then 'Swipe to Right' to make it happen and go back to the TWRP home screen;
Flash 'C69XX_14.2.A.0.290.flashable.zip' in TWRP """"""" but failed to explain in detail how to flash a stripped ftf of that "Flash everything in 'C69XX_14.2.A.0.290_Stripped.ftf';" and besides when i open that stripped ftf there are so many files i dont know what to do with them or flash it

Downgrade to .534 with the FTF provided by NUT (Post ##3), then Root with Bin4ry method (Best One), Install SuperSU from Play Store, Install XZDualRecovery (you should know Now which option) and grant everything in SuperSU, recovery is needed to install Pre-Rooted Stock FTF (without it you can Dream about Rooted Android), then go to the page of you prefered Stock Android 4.3 or 4.4 and follow the instruction "How TO". HOW? Reboot in Recovery, Flash the .zip Rooted Android, Power off and don't reboot, Flash from Flashtool the Stripped FTF. Reboot and enjoy your Rooted Device.

You flash it just like any other FTF, do not open it.
All ftf files have multiple files in them, they are basically a zip archive. In fact the stripped FTF has LESS files in it than the big ones....

I don't know why the extension of the stripped file is in .zip. Put that stripped file in Flashtool>firmware folder and if Flashtool recognize the file then you are ready to go, if not, change the Extension of that file from .zip to .ftf and try again. Same way like the downgrade, which I assume you did.
