[Q] Faulty flaps of Xperia Z caused water damage - Help!!! - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI,
I have purchased Sony’s current flagship the Xperia Z on its launch date in India itself.
I bought this phone because it was the only superdroid available with water resistant feature which I thought would be a very handy feature until my phone got dead because of it.
When I was using it, its litmus paper near headphone jack got red, I don’t know how, but it was red, but my phone was working flawlessly as it should be. Even though, being proactive, I visited service center and showed them the red litmus and asked them about it. The technician told me that phone is perfectly normal and has no issues and you can use it without any worries. I asked him to replace the flap as it could be faulty, on that he told me that it can’t be replaced unless and until we don’t find any problem with it and told me to use it as it is. So I took the phone and started using it as it has no issues as per the service center’s representative.
During first rain, I went out to take some photos and videos as climate was very awesome. I used it for few minutes in rain and suddenly I got message that the memory card is removed. I rushed back to home and checked my phone I found it malfunctioned as it was not even getting booted up. So I went to same service center again to get it fixed. After keeping that phone with them for almost a week, I got reply that it can’t be fixed as it happened due to customer’s mistake. I went there as it wasn’t my mistake but these guys are not ready to accept the thing even the service center manager also.
They are asking for 31000 for a new phone.
Now my question is where I made mistake? , I followed each and every instruction as per the technician who checked my phone earlier.
My phone is still there at the service center and I am stuck in the middle.
Now what i want is before giving any decission sony should do water test of my XZ so that they will get to know that the flap is faulty it should be replaced.
If that techinician don't know anything about the Xperia Z why he said it's working fine and usit without worries.

Honestly I'm scared now to put my phone into water. I see a lot of problems with this water resistant thing.
On topic : If I was you, when that marker turned red, I would never putted the phone again in contact with water and felt happy that it didnt broke in the first place.

It may not be the flaps afterall. There are a few users here who were reporting a lift of the back glass causing water ingress.

yes it may b but then why sony is taking too much time to sort out the issue.
why they are not doing water test of my phone.
Why it's still there .
I will take the phone from them and will do a water test and make a video of it and then will post it on youtube and sony's official facebook page.

Yeah you are right there are so many issues but the only thing about taking the phone in water is you have spent 40000 bucks just for that water resistant thing and the trust on sony that they will replace it and that's why I used it to take some snaps

Lets be honest with ourselves here, water resistance was meant for protection against accidental exposure to water, submerging it in water or using it rain is just the users pushing the limits of the phone.
Besides making a video with an already damaged phone wont help either as you cant prove the subsequent damage.
As for the Service Center guys attitude, its not unexpected.

I agree with you that the phone is water resistant but then they should not have shown on the box even on the warranty card that the phone can work for 1/2 hour below the water up to 1 meter.
n yeah I will put new litmus paper just for test below the flap before doing the test

In fact the 7 from the IP57 stands for : Immersion up to 1 m. Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion).
So why put the IP thing on the phone? Just tell the consumers that is water resistant (spils, few drops of rain, can be washed carrefully, something like that) but no IP, if you (Sony) can't stand up for the Ingress Protection Rating.

XZ Waterproofing
I have tried a 1 day trial with the XZ, and it was submerged quite a few times on scuba (but not more than 1 meter deep), and kep it in my pocket the whole day and most of the time it was submerged.
Luckily, it's still working. If you use the earphone jack more often, i just thought of the possiblity of the rubber side loosening up ( just like the user of the power supply flaps )
Well anyway, not intending to do another submerging. Just curious if it will really stand the storm for a smartphone's perspective

whatever it may b but if you are giving IP 57 and saying that this mobile can survive then this aspects should have been considered before launching the phone.
otherwise Sony should have given the Bluetooth headphones,charging dock free and no slots should have been provided to phone

I feel your pain... Just read again your original post, sorry misunderstood... How can they say it's a customer mistake... Judging for the 31000 price, is this in PESO currency ? For me, i dare not submerge this phone agian in water, because the parts and rubber will be degrading as the flaps are constantly being used.
What is the resolution then from the customer support ? Buy a new phone ? It's possible that some elements like moist went in the phone.
You might try disassembling the phone. Use a hair blower at the back repeatedly, then use a suction to remove the back cover. See if some moist were present inside. You can check this in youtube.

Paying 31000 is nothing but buying a new phone and They are saying it's your mistake.
Phone is not with me now it's with service center from 3rd of June and So I have no option to dissemble it and do this hair blower techniques

Sony will not accept this as it's there mistake until n unless you prove them as it is.
They have not giving proper response.My mobile is at the service center from 3 rd of june and still they have not told me the proper solution on this issue.

we all sholud unite and fight against company , for such malpractice and unethical business policy . my contact number 9435135416 , email [email protected] .
lots of tv commercial and you tube videos are showing rumor about the phone as if it is waterproof , company should remove this from their site .
we all should move to pehredaar if company person are not listening us ............

Where did they said that the phone is waterPROOF? You can say what ever you want about Sony, but the fact remains that these are just incidents. All companies have that. If it's they aren't incidents then why isn't everyone complaining?

I am not saying that all z phones are defective , listen i dropped some water over the phone and water entered inside the camera after putting the flaps closed , so i wanted sony to perform the test in front of me with my handset they agreed after lots of aguments , now the thing is in sony office located opposite borah service ulubari guwahati . they performed the test and the same result water entered inside it , now also they are fooling us , considering defective flaps or whichever they should have replaced my handset .
I am not saying whatever i like but saying what happened with me ,

where is your phone right now.
I had given the phone to service center n it's still lying over there
what we can do is file a case against Sony in consumer court.
But don't know why they are not replacing the phone if they know that the issue is there and it's because of faulty prodcut and service center technician.

My Xperia Z failed the water test out of the box!

Hello all, just wanted to inform all that I've experienced this odd thing with the Z that no one has seemed to have gone through, not sure of course...
But before anything else, as it was a huge selling point for a lot of hiking and travelling me, the water proofing needed to be tested.
I took it out of the box, peeled the plastic protectors off the front and back glasses, threw it in a glass.
- Now my camera has some fog inside, the volume down button has started to work again after half an hour, the loudspeaker is understandably very bad right now.
- Currently trying to get the fog out of the camera and hoping the loudspeaker to go back to normal.
- I will contact Sony tomorrow to discuss the problem and will update this as often as I can.

Solved!
- As Akiainavas has pointed out to me, it is actually written in the instructions manual, it is normal for the camera to get foggy between shifts from under water to outside the water, I've tested it work perfectly under water.
- Once dried out, all is good, it just took a lot longer for me compared to other people because of the low room temp I am used to I guess.
- The phone is all good, all working.
* Now on the to-do list: Unlock, Root, Flash, Enable Bravia through the whole user experience!
I heard that this is actually not uncommon. Let it dry. Try again tomorrow.
Indeed, i tested it the day i got and noticed the sound was very low after it was wet. After a half an hour (max 1 hr) sound will come back with normal volume. It's some protection thing i guess
It's just water on the speaker membrane that distorts the sound. Haven't got my phone yet, but try blowing it out. Waiting it out should work as mentioned.

Maybe its a faulty device with regard to that camera fog.... Can happen to one in thousand devices...
Surely sony will replace it...

This brings up a Good question. Has anybody read the warranty?Does it actually Say You are Covered it you purposefully dunk it in a bowl of water?
I mean I understand there have been demonstrations doing this but it Seems like a really silly thing to do with your brand new phone

the matter is...
xony xperia Z has the CERTIFICATION, wich isn't something you say you have, is something that has to been tested by a specific organization...
so if is certified i think you have warranty right...
never had any issues with fog in the camera on my xperia acro s, even after having it in my pocket while swimming
the speakers issue is common though, but thats expected, as water is going to get inside the speaker holes no matter what, but all I need to do is just shake the phone and blow where the speakers are and they work perfectly fine after that

Right, it's been 12 hours now, I left it to dry out in a bag full of humid absorbing silicon bags over night.
- Right now the fog inside the camera lens is gone.
- However I think it is out of battery so I plugged into charging.

Exactly what I have in mind, I will be contacting Sony about this no matter what, the phone failed the water test out of the box, it is a feature they promote and demonstrate heavily. If they don't cover it in their warranty despite all the promotion and the effort they have put in this phone, then they are just idiots who have absolutely no idea of how one device failing like this can damage the image if they don't back it up with their warranty.

Yes, it was all fully working - tested its other features without opening any of the covers to make sure the water test was legit for an hour or so.

Update: The phone is working, buttons all working, speaker working, camera fog gone and this time it didn't come back as soon as I took it out of the air lock bag.
I am still contacting Sony to get information on what I should do, how I should feel...
I will test it again after my talk with them and on the direction they've given. Mind you, I tested it only in a half full glass of water so what I will do is to try and reproduce the problem.

Update 2: I have just noticed that the charger is actually 1.5A and you cannot charge the phone from a computer unless you have a non-standard USB port like a 3A one that Gigabyte motherboards have.
Put mine in a vase of water yesterday for 5 mins and all was well, love it

When submerged, and after that:
- Speaker will have very low volume for a while, until it dries off
- There might be a "fog" on the camera because of humidity and temperature differences
- Hardware buttons might not react perfectly until the water dries off
It's perfectly normal. It's in instruction manual... but whoever reads those these days

Provided that all ports and covers are firmly closed, the phone is (i) protected against low pressure jets of water from all practicable directions in compliance with IP 55; and/or (ii) can be kept under 1 metre of freshwater for up to 30 minutes in compliance with IP 57. The phone is not designed to float or work submerged underwater outside the IP55 or IP57 classification range and should not be exposed to any liquid chemicals. If liquid detection is triggered on the handset or battery, your warranty will be void."
So it's only designed to be water resistant, and if it gets water damage, you're out of luck.

The thing is - it won't get damaged unless you leave the covers open. I asked Sony about it and apparently they have some tests to determine that - most likely a water detection that can be used even when the phone is dead. I think they'll probably just close the covers and put it in water to test it again, if waters gets in - it means your covers are flawed and you'll get a replacement. If not - it means you fkd up and you won't get your phone replaced.

If that's the case then then that's awesome!
It'd make sense too, as what's the point of going to all the trouble of getting it certified water-resistant and advertising it as one of the main features, and then saying to everyone that gets the slightest bit of water ingress that they're f**ked.

I trust Sony in this aspect. There are water sensitive tapes under every cover ( those little white things ) so they'll know which one leaked.
Also, remember what happened with Tablet S - it was supposed to be waterproof, but they detected a manufacturing defect that caused some of them to leak. Sony called every customer to Sony Center and provided a replacement of their device - dead or not, warranty or not... that's how you do it.

I've read it somewhere that the interior also has water resilient coating actually for when tiny amounts of water goes in, I wonder if that's why the camera gets fogged inside because I just don't get how there can be fog when there is no humidity allowed into the interior components as long as you are in the limits of the IP57 certification.
Am I wrong in this? Does water proofing not mean the device not allowing any humidity inside whatsoever? or Is it that the air molecules carrying the humidity inside can still get past the water proofing?

under flap covers there's a water-sensitive material wich becomes pink when water enters slots i've seen a photo from a review, but he has put his xperia z in many kind of water, beer too (beer has bubbles and carbon dioxide )

[Q] Xperia Z totally DEAD!!

I'm new here so please be nice to me plus i apologize if my english is bad and please take your time to read. I REALLY NEED HELP
SO here it is
. i got my xperia z a month ago and updated the firmware version last week. But the problem is not there.
the Big problem is. me and my friends had a vacation and i am very confident to use my phone to use it on water but not totally submerged.... only on the surface of water where we can take some pictures.
I am very sure and 100% sure that I securely close the flaps ALL FLAPS. before taking it to the pool. we manage to use the phone to take pictures and take some video but NO ONE submerged it underwater. we use it like 10 - 15mins only.
After an hour not using it, i checked my phone to see if someone emailed me or sms me. and i found some problems in my phone. i saw the front and back camera including the led flash is moisted. YES moisted INSIDE. and found the screen not hanging, not lagging but glitching so then i turned off my phone because i was too worried it may die when i keep it open. BTW the battery level is somehow 50+% more. then after 4 hours when i saw the moist in both of the camera is gone.. i opened my phone and BOOM the battery level downed to 1% then after less than a minute my phone DIED. i tried to charge it for the first time and after an hour it turned on. and yes turned on directly to the lock screen. i know and as far as i know. when the battery is drained and charged you're not suppose to be on the lock screen in instance. you must be on the charging status where you can see the battery logo charging with the electric sign or the flash sign or whatever.
Then i tried to unlock my screen without a problem and still pretty smooth to use but after an hour or two the battery is still on 1% then i tried to run the camera and it DIED again. yes my Z died again.
We got home. after 4 hours of travel and within the 4 hours i didnt open or charge the phone. after that long hour when i got home. i charged the phone. Tried to charge it in a wall charger and tried it in usb connected to desktop charge but it only shows me a blinking red notification light.
i tried to turn it on but it wont. i tried to hard reset it with power button + volume up but nothing happen
So a while ago i brought my phone to the nearest Sony Service Center. Unluckily the phone is not yet available here in my country (philippines)
they said that the water went through inside and damage the processor, or something like the motherboard or something like the one that makes the phone alive. I ask them if they can fix my phone. they said there is no probability because the phone is not yet available in my country and so as the parts. he said if we try to repair it now it'll cost you like you bought a brand new one. so i was shocked and very sad.
I bought this phone on a Trusted online store but they can't help me. they have a 3days replacement warranty and a 1 year service warranty but as the rules follows. The Warranty is voided if a water proof or water resistance gadget is damaged by water or liquid device. my phone is 1 month old.
I am very depressed because here in the philippines its like gold to buy that phone. I'm a bit depressed about the Sony commercial boosting up my confidence to wet my phone. even if I / we didnt submerged it.
I need help! what do i do? i really love my xperia z and its my first flagship phone.
Take it to the service center and ask them to escalate this to area manager...

they did send it to area manager, but the manager said the same thing "Xperia Z is not yet available in the philippines and so the parts" but i saw some article and forums that the phone will be available by april.. its this month
Did you tried to dry the phone with hair dryer?And keep the phone on charger for hours.

for the past 24 hours upto now. i dried my phone through the heat of sunlight and the use of fan. I'm charging the phone right now but its notification light is different from what i expect. instead of a consistent red light - turned to green when almost full or fully charged... for about 6 hours now its only a blinking red notification light with 3-5 seconds interval.

yes i've seen this link before. but the fact that i / we didnt submerge it underwater. the phone itself got wet from splashes of water from the swimming pool which is not too hot or too cold. its in average temperature. after an hour or less. i saw some moisture on the front and rear camera including the led flash light.
so does this mean i have no other choice but to buy a new one? ( but i can't, the phone's price is like gold here in Philippines )
is there no / any other solution?

the 3 days replacement warranty is over. the fact that i have this phone for a month now
1 year service warranty is voided as the rule said :
"*Service warranty only includes :

OPEN DAMN FLAPS and check there is white indicators. If it's still white it was NO WATER DAMAGE !!!

So True!!! have you checked the white indicators? I they are all white and they should replace your phone, if they are red-ish then you gotta argue with them and tell them to examine the phone because you didn't do anything wrong.

- the micro SD and the micro USB flap are slightly red
- the headphones flap is totally red.
anyway. i bought this ONLINE, not from a sony store, The Store said it has a 3days replacement warranty and a 1 year service warranty.... is the one year service warranty is the Sony Warranty? or is different?

You should check the law about replacement, in Slovenia we said that "Law on Consumer Protection". We have unofficial 8 days replacement, btu by the law, we are protected for 2 months from the day we bought an article.

when i bought the phone it's really in its perfect condition so service warranty will remain but the fact that they said :

it means i have to spend another bucks to repair it but as of now they said that the parts of this model is not yet available in my country.
regardless of the country, the COMPANY of SONY gives a 1 year warranty.
if you are unsure about philipines, send it to someone in a different country like japan or usa and they should send it in for warranty.

if the indicators are red, water MUST HAVE gotten to the inside, and this is very bad. maybe the flaps were not really secured tightly but only loosely. nobody knows how water got through 3 different flaps and sony may check the flaps.
if they are closed and no water comes through, then it's pretty obvious, that they were not closed "correctly" / pushed in very hard all the way down.
even if it's that much worth like a ball of gold in the phils, it "may be" your fault that it got damaged.
i don't know how that happened, but the indicators are there for a good reason.
if you had it with you in the pool, maybe water could have gotten from ONE loose flap to the others. but if you only had it get some drops of water on the front and back, that possibility should not be there.
so ask yourself once again how water could have gotten to all the indicators or did you open them with wet fingers to connect cables ?

I am very sure that the flaps (ALL FLAPS) of my XZ are secured tightly. I'm pretty sure too that before i open the flaps after several hour i dried it using a towel and pretty sure that my hands and fingers are dry before i charge it.
can you provide a link where i can message them and investigate my phone? i'm really missing my XZ right now

I'm from Philippines too and i have the same problem, but there are some differences. like , i let my friend use my phone to take picture under the pool, so he submerged my phone but not deep, like just 4 inches. then he returned it to me. and i set the timer then gave it to him again and he took picture, by the third time.. i was checking my phone the camera didnt work i exit, then touch the camera icon and it says "camera error", so 1st. i submerged my phone and you didnt
2nd i could still use it, the camera is the only problem. i listened to 3-4 songs then, i stopped and played minion rush. for like 3 runs, after 2hrs, i let my friend play my phone (take note my front and back camera also moistened) then it suddenly just turned off. not shutdown. just off, turned black..
3rd the moist on my main camera is still there
then i perform an inspection. i open each flaps, and there are no traces of water except in the flap cover of my memory card, i was shocked because i also made sure that the flaps are all closed before using it in the pool. i dont know how the water managed to enter the closed flap then i took my memory card out its not that wet but you can see very little water. then i brought immediately to nearest sony (just an FYI. i bought my phone in Sony store in SM Bacoor) then they said they have this white water indicator, if it turned red or pink means a water really entered the device. my indicators (for each flap) is all white (even the flap cover of my memory card) so they cant say what was really the problem, and they said. the moistening of the camera is natural.. then they charged my phone thinking that the battery was just drained but i said no, the battery was 65 when it happened, but after a 1-2 minutes of charge. my phone OPENED !! then i told them i just updated my software. you know the 4.3 jelly bean and they said the update might have something to do with what happened to my phone. so the water isnt only the responsible for my problem
and also my phone glitches while on lockscreen.. after it opened :'( im bringing my phone again in PASIG . SONY at megamall recommended me to take my phone to pasig branch. (i thought in MOA) so if you live nearby these places. you should bring it to PASIG branch. coz they said "only" pasig branch do the fixing thing

[Q] Does my Xperia Z lost water resistance?

I have my Z from its release. I tried its water resistance the first day i recieved it, all was OK. I recorded many videos underwater, in swimming pool, at home, and everything was always ok. Everytime i took it in water, I mindfully closed all the covering caps.
But today, I got a problem. I took my phone with me to water, as whnever I did, and when I was looking at it after "bathing", my camera was fogged - it was wet INSIDE. I tried to check those white indicators under covering caps, and those at USB port and headphone jack were RED. I also noticed tiny droplets of water there. Everything else is however working. No display issues, headphones are playing, USB works too.
I must remark that my phone dropped me on pavement from my pocket about month ago (scratched corners), but its resistance worked until today.
What now? Should I claim it? What do you guys think? I bought Xperia Z mainly for its water resistance. It is very distressing that I can take it in water any more.
Edit: one problem detected - mobile data doesnt work.
Since the indicators are red you have nothing to stand on, they will just say that the flaps were open and you won't be able to prove them wrong.

I read somewhere that on the repair service they check if the flaps provide the necessary seal against water. If they provide enough seal, and you have the indicators turned red, they blame you for not having closed the flaps correctly, on the other hand, if the flaps show defects and let water through, even when properly closed and with moisture indicators turned red, they still service your device under warranty.

They were closed. I was always checking them before going in water. Im 100% sure. And yes i can prove it. They can close the flaps and test phone and see if there is water or not.
Dropping the phone may have caused an open gap somewhere and water leaked in.
Nothing you can do, just argue your way in and hope for the best.
If you know you are a clumsy person, you should have gotten a case.

In the pictures the phone has a the back glass lifted, maybe that was the problem. I have the back lifted too , but not that high as yours.
Don't tell them you used it in the swimmingpool, it clearly says in the instruction booklet that you should't.
Swimmingpool water contains acids and chemical products that may destroy the rubber seals over time.
I think I know what happened. Flaps may be ok (I tested to put the phone in water again - there were no water under them, but water still got to a phone - my volume down is damaged now), but the right issue is that back plate is raised a bit around the camera
Type "Sony Xperia Z repair, disassembly manual" on youtube.
As you can see on this video, right under the plate are phone GUTS. The plate can be raised by warming it. Thus it can raise when you play games or a sun is shining on a phone. All Xperia Z owners, check your back plate too if it is OK or raised! I believe this is that water resistance issue..
The fog in camera disappeared during the day and when I removed SIM and put it back, mobile data begun to work. Bad thing is that volume button doesnt work (as I said above). The button itself is ok and its not stucked or pressed, but when I turn phone on, it always starts in safe mode and I cant volume down, I can just volume up (using the button; I can volume down using display), so I think button contacts are fu**ed and phone thinks the buton is pressed. I think only thing I can do now is going to repair service.
I could never imagine submersing my phone in water. not worth the risk.
I treat my XZ as water resistant. I'll text people when im in the bath with wet hands etc.. but never put it in water

Yeah, you are right. I think thats the issue. Did u try to put it in water if it is ok or not?
I've read somewhere of someone using bleach on a cotton bud VERY carefully to whiten the markers.
I had a similar issue, take it to the service center & get it fixed.

Those flaps are piece of crap. Especially that flap where charger/data cable go. Since we playing with it every day, my guess is that sealing got weaken and that's why water got thru the phone. Gap may be less than tenth of a millimeter ( <0,1 mm) and water can easily come in.
i think it's time again to bash those people who warn others not take their phone into water, as the xperia z is not waterproof, but just water resistant. and that's more likely to protect the phone from accidental drops into water, rather than to go diving/bathing/filming with it in water.
and those warners know what the IP-rating says ("...half an hour"..."submerged 'till half a meter"....)

What is the point of deliberately putting your expensive phone in danger, IP rating or no IP rating?

gosh, not this discussion again! It does not matter what the point is or if there is a point or not. If the producer communicates that this phone CAN sustain without damage being in water i-don't know-how-deep for i-don't know-how long, then this phone SHOULD do it. The intentions of the users, or whether there is a point or not in taking your phone to the swimming pool, are NOT important. It is IMPORTANT that whatever was promised to the user SHOULD BE VALID.

Perhaps you have a point, but if you go to a service centre with red water ingress indicators, you will be paying to have your phone repaired as they will say it was caused by user negligence. End of story.
If you do not put your phone into water for no good reason, it will never get water damaged. Why are people using the IP rating to excuse a complete lack of common sense?

because they bought the phone with the intention that they can do this with it. They've seen it in official Sony commercials (phone used during rain, phone washed under running water after being splashed with color paint, on exhibitions Sony employees dropped it in aquariums, smashed the phone on the floor repeatedly to demonstrate that the glass won't break). I heard that in some shops they even have the Z in a water tank all the time and only take it out for charging. There was that show in Czech Republic where two models used the phone under the shower and so on.
The phone has an ip57 rating which clearly states that you can submerge it into water for 1m and up to 30 minutes. I also believe that you can leave it there for much longer and it SHOULD be okay, only the depth is important. The deeper you go, the higher is the water pressure and the seals might leak.
Now, cars also have ip ratings for water protection and different levels for the interior of the car and the outside. Inside it might be ip54 (water, mud and splashes when entering the car with wet shoes or boots) and outside it's even ip59 or ip58K which means it's protected against water ingress when used with high pressure water jets (e.g. car wash!).
I'm sure most people would complain, if there brand new car is flooded with water on the inside after they went to car wash. The same is true for this phone!
An ip rating is an ip rating and not like "buhu, it's ip57 but it can only manage 3 drops of water before it breaks!". If that is the case, I could have keept my S2 which also survives a few drops of rain without damage. If Sony can't manage that, they shouldn't have advertised it like that or given an ip54 rating or something lower.
You can't claim your phone has the SECOND HIGHEST protection against water there is and then say: "Stay away from water". It's like: "your car has 6 airbags, but don't expect them to work in a crash" or "your Porsche can go 300 km/h, but don't ever try it"
People put their phone in water because they can and should be able to.
If the XZ can't and should be used in water, I'm sure most people would have bought a non water proof phone instead because it would be the same. I was drawn to this phone because of it's water resistance.
I'm beeing very paranoid and bought a 5€ waterproof bag for my phone which I tested yesterday for 6 hours submerged in the sink. The paper inside stayed perfectly dry. Even though my XZ should be waterproof on its own, I think double protection is always better. The bag seems to be waterproof, and even if by some chance it is not, then my phone won't be damaged, because it's supposed to be waterproof too!
With this double protection, I'm still afraid to take it to the pool, but might do so eventually which I wouldn't have done without the bag.
Yes, you do have a point. At least somewhat anyway.
For a start, the manual tells you to avoid chlorinated water. So no swimming pools. I wonder if this is why the water resistance appears to have failed in this case.
I could point out other things that the manual tells you to avoid, but everyone here has already read it before going swimming with their phone, right?

water test, I hope not failed

So, after I finally got the charging dock, after 3 weeks of charging the phone through the USB port, I decided to test it in water for the first time. I checked that the flaps were well sealed and put it in water, as it was showing a video. All good so far. After 2 minutes, I took it out and put it on a towel to dry. Still working. After 5 more minutes, I noticed that the USB cover was slowly coming out by itself. I pushed it back more securely, but it was still pushing out by itself. I opened it entirely then covered the port again securely. 15 minutes later, phone still working. I DO HOPE nothing went wrong. I will be back tomorrow with another update. I am not sure why the cover was acting up. I am sure I placed it well before I put the phone in water, I checked like 10 times.
Following morning, phone works well. Last night, I also opened the back cover and dried the drops of water in the area outside the battery protective rubber ring. I guess the phone is alright but I probably won't do the water exercise very often, I was nervous as hell

I always hesitate to put my XZR to test in water until last night when I was texting my gf when I was having my shower.
Pressure from my shower induced touches but it was expected.
Then I put it into test under water and it works just fine.
Now I'm just wondering how will it perform if I test it in sea for <1meter <10mins since the IP58 stated only for fresh water...
The word around the forums is that it will be fine as long as you clean it in fresh water immediately after so no salt can attach to the materials. But... I don't think I'm going to dip it in sea water. Good luck!

I also performed a water resistance test by putting the phone under the shower. All the flaps were closed and I was disappointed that water came under the back panel: the NFC port, camera lens and some interstices on the edges were wet. Does that mean the phone is water resistant... even inside ? :silly:

I think the OP could just rename the thread
I'm don't really want to drop my phone for testing but I think the screen is very resistant. It doesn't bend when we press hard on it because there is no air layer between the glass/touch panel and the screen itself, and all the components seem very close.
The frame of the phone also looks strong so I think the ZR is well cooked for drops. Anyway paying attention is the best way to keep a phone alive
It's normal that water goes in the camera part. The phone is fine unless the water goes in the battery part. You need to dry the water inside the back every time you put it in water.

there is an laternate dock on ebay for 10 USD, can't post link yet, just enter ebay and search "xperia zr dock" there are several sellers selling them.
i bought one, will probebly arrive in a week or more so i can review it.
and about the anti-shatter film, can anyone elaborate? is it supposed to help defend the glass from shatters? or just keep it from disintigrating once it's been shattered? cos the latter is disaponting.
It's meant to keep the glass from splintering after it shatters. It's pretty tough. Dropped the phone onto concrete from my hand, so about 4 feet. It survived although the frame got a bit of a dent.

frankly , i don't think that having a removable back cover in a waterproof device is a good idea , this thing will make alot of people (like me) hesitate before buying this phone , my brother has the Xperia Acro S , the phone is really solid build, he use it alot under water , he likes to listen to music while taking a shower ,and he always take the phone to pool trips. i dont think the the owner of XZR will dare to do it that often.
maybe i will have to change my mind about buying this phone, after the Z1 was announced.

well, you've seen what happend with the xperia Z, it's back is not glued right and water are leaking between the glass and the back into the device for a large number of people, not having a removable back doesn't nessecarly means better.
the ZR removable back actually looks good, this rubber band does a much better job then glue, and for most people who had leakage problem with ZR it was from the flaps and not the back.
now i wonder how can the acro s be more durable, the thing has 5 flaps!! thats 3 more than the ZR, so unless sony really lost thier game producing those flaps it shouldn't be any less better at it.

well, you've seen what happend with the xperia Z, it's back is not glued right and water are leaking between the glass and the back into the device for a large number of people, not having a removable back doesn't nessecarly means better.
the ZR removable back actually looks good, this rubber band does a much better job then glue, and for most people who had leakage problem with ZR it was from the flaps and not the back.
now i wonder how can the acro s be more durable, the thing has 5 flaps!! thats 3 more than the ZR, so unless sony really lost their game producing those flaps it shouldn't be any less better at it.

you have a point here , yes the removable back cover dose not mean it will be bad for water proofing , but still it is scary to try it in the water.
to sum the whole water proofing thing , i think that water proofed devices should have very few moving parts , and that is flaps and back cover...
Xperia Z1 and S4 active (that has removable back cover) share this feature of having only one flap , the uncovered -yet proofed- 3.5 jack is a big win. those seems to be better waterproofed devices.

I have to complain about the loss in faith I have had in this company I once trusted, considered reliable. I own a Sony Television, a PS3, Music System, POS Camera and now a Smartphone, the Xperia ZR. But the business policy and Service to Consumers have changed over the years, and this has caused a great emotional and economic distress to me.
I had bought an XPERIA ZR(C5502) on the 11th of September, 2013. After a month of use, suddenly the screen of the phone would not turn on. Other functions were working perfectly as far as my knowledge goes, (i.e. camera button, volume keys etc). A few days ago, it stopped booting altogether.
On contacting the Sony Service centre he informed me that I have done water damage to my phone, and therefore void my warranty. I repeatedly asked him to open(unscrew) the phone and check for any damages, but he told me that he wont open it, because some litmus paper inside the phone had turned red, indicating water damage. I persistently said that the phone has undergone no water damage, and is not turning on, so to please check for any damage inside and fix it as it was just a month old and was under warranty. I repeatedly told him that I have not brought the phone under water contact in any manner, to which he replied that then it was my fault during purchase, that I didnt check the water indicator strip, thereby asserting that I AS A CONSUMER AM NOT ASSURED A DEFECT FREE PIECE UPON PURCHASE. WHY DIDNT YOU PUT A CLAUSE FOR THE CONSUMER, THAT "PLEASE CHECK THE WATER INDICATOR UPON PURCHASE" ? THAT INDICATOR HAS BEEN RED AS FAR AS I KNOW.
ADDITIONALLY, THIS PHONE IS IDENTIFIED AS "WATERPROOF" BY SONY. But he said I had to pay 80% of the phone's actual cost, to get a replacement, and he will NOT REPAIR IT UNDER WARRANTY. ALSO, HE ADDED, THAT HE WILL ONLY OPEN IT TO INSPECT IF HE GETS A SPECIAL EMAIL FROM SONY INDIA AUTHORITIES, INSTRUCTING HIM TO DO SO.

Xperia Z1 water damaged :(!!!!

Took my phone on holiday - well, my phone that the girlfriend uses - to Egypt!
On the 4th day we decided we wanted some under water video and pictures in the 120cm deep swimming pool (non chlorinated water). So the girlfriend checked the ports were all closed on her phone, then asked me to confirm they were closed - so I rubbed and pushed my fingers along each side to confirm closure
Took lots of great photographs with the phone only being submerged for around 15 seconds at a time, a few videos including submerging and just above water footage, again with submersion lasting no longer than 15 seconds at a time.
But during the course of the afternoon when taking photographs I noticed that the camera app was looking quite "foggy" - turned the phone over and the lens had condensation inside it!!!
Not happy whatsoever!
All afternoon the phone was turning on and off the power button thought it was being pressed, the camera took photos quicker than you can imagine as the camera button thought it was being pressed - so when we returned to the room, I put the phone in a bag with some of the free tea bags so that they could absorb any internal moisture (yes I opened the flaps whilst it was in this bag ... but not before this)
The phone now works other than the camera button, the motion sensor and the water damage indicators are all red
I'm extremely annoyed!!
The phone was fine all morning and should last for 30 minutes under water! I do actually have some footage which I will be uploading shortly, which shows the camera is fine going under water, then when it resurfaces the videographer is then splashed by someone which then creates the internal fogging, then the camera is then resubmerged and then resurfaced - splashed again and then the fogging disappears (we didn't know of this at the time - only during playback!)

My arguement is that if the flaps were accidentally left open (which they were 100% CLOSED during use!!), then the camera would have fogged when underwater, not just when flashed - does this sound correct?

SO TO SUM IT UP, THE FLAPS WERE CLOSED ALL DAY BEFORE I STARTED FILMING UNTIL I OPENED THEM TO DRY IT OUT AROUND 3 HOURS AFTER THE EVENT

I opened the flaps around 3 hours after using the phone in the water

Just taking my photos off my camera and I can see that I took a photograph of my girlfriend who was using the phone at the time. She was facing the phone at me whilst I was taking the photograph and I can see in my photo that the flaps were closed. This was 10 minutes prior to the video that I've uploaded above - so yes, my flaps were closed!!

Just by the way, the "fogging" you see in the footage is most likely a drop of water on the lens, as it clears suddenly when splashed again.
I have an expensive water proof watch which had the battery replaced by a professional watch smith, but they had somehow messed up screwing the backing plate on and water got inside and it fogged up.. but only later that day! took it back and they fixed the watch for free but I was peeved
My point is that your z1 was not water tight, most likely a result of a factory defect and they cannot turn you away because what has happened to you is unacceptable
Sorry for the bump to this post, but i'm facing the exact same problem and seems like here are few.
I want to know, if you can indicates me, where the liquid indicators are on the Z1. I can't find them.
All inside the flaps is or white or grey, nothin red, but i want to be sure in oorder to take my phone under warranty.

I hope. I bought this phone as a second hand deal. Everything was fine and indeed the phone is working fine. It was a 1 or 2 hours thing. Nevertheless, last night I got the fog in camera lens. I opened the flaps and took apart the SIMCARD and the SD the whole night. There is not fog now.
Ill take it today to the carrier to see if I cab get a new one because I really don't trust on repaired one.. If the warranty stills. But thats why I wanted to know where the indicator is locat3d, in order to demonstrate that the flaps where closed all the time and avoid tricks to invalidate the warranty.

i understand you, but you can believe sony service IMO and also they will not repair they will replace, whatever happened with your phone, if even your phone damaged due to flap opened, its really dont matters, DEVICE IS Under 6 month warranty of Water and Glass Damage,
Just go and show them.

Sorry for bother you, but can you please point me to that information (Link, PDF, Web, etc)? I'm kinda negtaive speaking about warranties and stuff, especially here in my country. Mobile carriers gonna try to PUSH you into the water with the flaps open just to make sure they win and not validate your warranty. I don' trust them at all. I'm thinking about elaborate a letter to the tech support with a copy to the Agency of Comsummer in here, attaching the warranty that you've mentioned, that way i'll make sure that they will not try to cheat me.
This mornin i took the phone to the shop and the tech was looking it for the indicators, he said everything was fine because others brough their owns and they were red, mine doesn't, but, the phone have to be send to the capital City where the whole warranty procces is done. I don't want a repaired phone, i want a new one, so i have to play all my cards for that. I can't find the warranty you say, so i really aprecciate your help.

Good luck with this. Mine was bricked after 2 months and 2 days having the phone and all the authorised repair place did was replace the motherboard, I'm thinking there would be plenty of parts around now to do almost any repair. Unless the screen is also dead somehow..

Are you maybe from Croatia?
Same behavior you could find here, in Croatia - they will do anything but replace your device...

This is what the repair centres will do. After writing a letter to Sony, in a very short summary to their reply;
They will check the colour strips inside the phone, if red, will do a pressure test. If liquid has entered the phone during this test they will repair/replace, because the cause of the water damage was manufacturing or repair defect.
If no liquid has entered during this test, no warranty because you must not have closed the flaps correctly.

I always can wrote letters to the consummer deffense in here. The tech in the shop saw this under the flaps and he said that indeed, the indicators wasn't red, so it could be a build failure or another thing except user error. anyway, it's gone right now. Let's see how it ends.
Just send it back.. Mine had the same issues and went back and returned to me without any issues.

I am having the same problem right now. When I bought the phone I used it underwater a couple times and nothing wrong. Today I spilled water on it accidentally and went to wipe it with a towel. I looked at it flaps closed everything fine. 10 min later it said sim card removed and tried to restart but now it's just rebooting on it's own. All 3 indicators are red and I can't turn it off. I don't understand how could water get in to all the ports via a splash... my phone is currently in rice and I hope for the love of god that it'll be fine....
Strange scenario happened to me with my Z1 compact. I was taking video and pictures in Big Flowing river thinking that my phone is 100% waterproof then after taking pictures then I started taking video my friend was recording video then suddenly I threw a ball in which we were playing with it went and hit my phone and phone got slipped from my friends hand and it got drowned in water then immediately I went inside water and grabbed my phone which was drowning... Best part is all this was recorded in that video later I saw my phone my camera was covered with water moisture. So I was worried then I put my phone in rice then the water moisture was gone. I will try to upload my video in some time.
