Hello people,
As I can see this question had never been raised before, so...
Is it possible to add support for different video codecs for the stock Movies application in Sony Xperia Z/ZL? It seems like a neat app, however it supports only mp4 files and no AC3 support.
Is it possible to do on rooted device? But please don't suggest any custom ROMs.
Thanks

Hi ive tried searching thru google I know that definitely the su660 has official LG firmware that allows it to play 4.1 High Profile MKV.
My question is did LG ever release a firmware with the same ability to play Hi Profile 4.1 Mkv for the Optimus 2x p990 and which firmware is it?
Id like to stay with stock firmware before i try custom roms.
Even diceplayer has a condition on its app page that HW acceleration will depend on the firmware so Please point me to the right stock firmware as most of my mkvs are HP 4.1.
And my low power pc is not strong enough for re-encoding.
This is my first android phone so please be nice i really tried searching thru all the forums before posting this question.
this forum post gave me some hope but the question hasnt been answered till now.
I just need 720p HP 4.1

The playback for 720p HP H.264 is still crappy and laggy because of the Tegra 2 not supporting that profile in h/w decoding. I don't know if there exists any firmware, that can smoothly playback those files. The only thing that could perhaps speed up playback is overclocking the cpu.
Youtube videos in 720p, that can be played within the browser are extremely laggy.
720p can only be played on base profile not high profile4.1

As said above, you might want to try MX Video Player that has codecs specifically designed for tegra2, still it will be software decoding but with oc you can still play them in 720p.
not only mx video player, but mobo player has also additional codec

Oh, I haven't tried that one yet ^^
So I've been on ics for a while now and I love it. But one of the things I used a bit in the Samsung roms was allshare to watch movies or TV shows which are on my media center pc. I'm wondering what is the best way to go about doing this on the ics roms. I'd guess it would be a similar method to what you'd do on cm7. So does anyone have any suggestions?
And in also wondering what are the best video players to try for ics? I don't mind playing for a great featured player. Most of my stuff is in avi, mp4, mkv etc.
Just thought I'd ask.

The Allshare feature should work with all apps that support dlna, try some of them out on the market (keyword: DLNA).
For playing videos I can recommend MX Video. They have shortly released an ICS update. It's working flawlessly on my (soon to be)-CM9 Build 3.
Is there an app that is free w/ no ads?
If i backed up all my apps from ginger and restore allshare will it work?

did not work for me
Hey guys,
I'm using Owain's kang v57 and it seems that .wma files are not supported by most music and alarm apps. The only app I found that supports wma is Moliplayer, which uses extra codecs (you need to download from the market too).
So my question is (as I want to use wma files for my alarm):
Is there any way I can add the codec myself or will the codecs be added to the ROM in the future?
Thanks for your help!
wma is pretty much obsolete like mp2, so I doubt anyone would add support for it unless there was a very good reason for it. I suggest you switch over to mp3, ogg or aac/mp4.
tl;dr - wma died out early 2000.
Have you tried another player like Poweramp? But I 'd suggest converting too.

Covert it into mp3... Faster, smaller, and better
Thanks for the suggestions. Have reverted to CM7 for other reasons as well, but will convert my files for future use
Good morning,
it seems like microsoft added a bunch of new video codecs in wp8 but no .mkv support.
i´m new to winphone but from my understanding there´s no 3rd party video player for winphone7 that supports it.
does anybody know the reason for that? and most important: is there any chance to see an app for that anytime soon or are there any development restrictions that would prevent that from ever happening?
Windows Phone 7 does not allow for Apps to consume external files. That would make an alternative Video player pretty much impossible. Another problem would be that most likely MKVs would not contain Codecs supported by the device and WP7 only allows for Managed Code which is not really what you would use to implement a Video Codec.
Windows Phone 8 on the other hand does allow for both: file associations and native code, so it's definitely doable. We'll have to wait and see wether someone will implement an according App though.
Support for MKV and all the other pirate bay friendly file formats is all that's keeping me from WP8
Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone else has tried playing .mkv video files and also get no sound?
Does anyone know why either?

Yes with stock video player, I have this issue. But, you can always play with a another player e.g. MX Video Player, it works flawlessly.
Mx Video Player also can`t play the audio file for some mkv files, only when using software decoding. I think it`s because the stock video player doesn`t know the audio codec used and doesn`t have support for software decoding. But yea, using an alternative video player should work.
BSPlayer free, does it with dts as well
Using DicePlayer atm, very good, audio plays, but sometimes the audio isnt correct and makes a high pitch sound, i'll try out the other players soon

It's not a "fresh" topic for playing mkv on Android device like this Xperia z no sound output. Some people have recommend a pile of video players like MX player, Dice player, etc and some others recommend to decode/encode the MKV files to a common video files like MP4 for easy playback. I think the no audio issues mainly depend on the DTS audio codec contained in MKV files, which is not easy to handle for most of the android devices. I'm the Xperia Z user, and have some other files like AVI, FLV, MPG and VOB files to Xperia Z for free playback on the go, so I choose to get a video convert tool to fast reformat these files to a Xperia Z favorable format that won't come up any problems. I found the way to put MKV videos to Xperia Z without any audio issue from Goolge.

Forget P.O.S. spyware apps like Brorsoft...
Avidemux, on the other hand, is brilliant.
bsplayer free did the trick for me
if you're using MX player , unmark the use hw decoding tick and you'll have sound
