Hallo,
I have a few questions to you. I have got my HTC One now and I am very happy with it.
Before I had always Samsung phones, so i know what root, flashing etc means but i don't know the flashing process at HTC phones.
So my question to you. What should I do before flashing and rooting my phone? What should i backup before so that i cant brick my phone or even if I brick my phone that I can easy recover it.
Can you please post me an order I have to go on with my phone now? It is official and unlocked phone.
Thanks for listening
First of all, congratulations on your purchase, it truly is a great device. I am coming from a Samsung Galaxy S3 as well, but before that a HTC One X so I was partially familiar with how it works. Let us just establish that it is much easier to root and install custom ROMs on a Galaxy than it is on HTC devices, mainly because of the Security HTC devices has on them, in other words S-ON and locked boot loader. Here is a guide that will help you through everything:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2265618
Just read it very carefully unless you want to mess things up.
Since you are running stock at the moment, I'd suggest unlocked bootloader, flashing custom recovery, and then making a Nandroid Backup and then booting back into the ROM and taking a copy of that and keeping it on your computer just in case. Not only will that lessen the chance of you getting into trouble with all of this, but it will also give you a chance to go back fully stock any time you want (it's not as easy as flashing a stock ROM in ODIN, in the case of Samsung).
Good luck and if you follow the guide to the word, you hopefully won't run into any problems. If you do, just ask here and we'll help you.
thanks !
I will read this later on when I am at home ! But thanks for helping !
If I have any questions I will ask you
little question I have an unlocked HTC One so no branding or something is on it. Is this good?

Hello all
I have had my nexus one for quite a while now and when i bought it the bootloader had already been unlocked, but it had not been rooted yet. The problem I am having is the lack of space the nexus one has for installing apps as apps2sd is dependent on the developers.
So after some research i have found an app called 'ModInstallLocation' which tells me i can install apps to my sd card but it needs the phone to be rooted. Is this correct?
This is where i need some help. I hear all this talk about rooted phones and custom roms and i understand the idea behind it but have no technical knowledge to do this.
At this time i am happy with the stock version of android i have on my nexus (2.2.2 FRG83G) its just the lack of space i have to install apps that's forcing me down this road. I am sure there are many other advantages to rooting and i hope to discover them in time.
Could someone please give a helping hand and point me in the right direction for an idiots guide. I am a bit scared of bricking my phone tho, never endeavored on anything like this before.
Many thanks
JW

thanks you for your response, think that explains how to proceed.
couple more questions if you could help.
1. Do i have to install a custom rom after i root?
2. As i have not got much experiance in this field should i wait for the OTA update to gingerbread before i root?
many thanks
JW
1. No, if you're ok with stock ROM - you can stay with it.
2. Not really, depends mostly on what you're looking for. Gingerbread will still land on your phone (and unroot you), as long as you're using stock ROM and recovery.
hi guys i need to know the basic instructions from scratch, with links to the needed files. i need the safest possible way to do this. am looking to update with a hybrid Sense and a stable android 2.3.3 fully working.
This rom looks excellent, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123997
first time with good knowledge of the subject. however simple and safe instructions needed
thanks in advance
ps. i looked at other post but there are too many methods and am confused as Sh*t
Ok well do you want to unlock the bootloader or keep it locked? Cause there are methods to do it with or without.
Also sorry for my ignorance but what is the base android version for the vodafone ROM.
well am not sure if i should unlock the bootloader of what the benafits are but can you upload a tutorial video or text thanks
Well unlocking the bootloader will give you access to fastboot which can come in handy if you get into trouble and can flash a few things (but very few) that you can't via recovery. The down side is that it will void your warranty if you still have some left and it will wipe your phone.
I am using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995445 at this moment.
use this guide to root and flash your room
just replace the CM7 rom with your rom at the last part

Hello All,
I've read a lot of forums as to installing custom roms and I'm still lost. I haven't tried anything yet cause I'm too chicken to experiment and possibly kill my phone. Long story short, I still would like to install a custom rom to mainly get free wifi tethering.
I noticed in most of the forums that the only way to even begin the process is to downgrade to SPL 4.xxx. I don't have a restore point in Zuncee cause my pc crashed a month ago. Is the only way for me to downgrade from 5.xxx to 4.xxx, is by the goldcard method or is there a work around? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi there,
I was in the same situation you are now! Last week on Tuesday I brought a HD7 from ebay and thought it would be as easy to install custom rom as my HD2.....after reading the forums here it was anything else! But still by Wednesday I had custom ROM on my phone (im using deepshining). The only method I tried and what worked was the Goldcard method. I made my own Y cable and followed the instructions on the Goldcard thread. I found this video on youtube quite useful as well!
Any questions just ask me ill try to help as much as I can. I did find it tough to work out at first but when you have a custom ROM installed its like a new phone!

There's nothing you can do, except gold card, it's safe and easy, no need to be afraid
Hi dcscorpio76,
I am currently also in the same boat as you.
I have SPL 5.12... and also want to downgrade.
I have no backup to revert to as i recently wiped my PC and never kept my old WP backups.
After lots of reading (and im still not 100% on the process so will likely read some more) I intend to downgrade my SPL and then flash an 'unlocked' version of UK trophy rom. From what i have read i think im going to have to use the 'gold card' method so i will be buying a few bits (cables, usb gender changer etc.) When i have all the things (i believe) i need i will write back here on what i do and where it gets me.
I have a £10 nokia that i still love and i wouldn't be all that bothered if i had to use it. Why not wait until i have flashed mine (over the next couple of days i think) so that you dont risk bricking your device that you may still rely on?
I dont totally dislike my WP, its just that i want to breathe a new lease of life into it. I would like to customise the UI and play with some homebrew apps.
One thing i dont really intent to explore is running apps that should be paid for in the marketplace as im a believer in paying a good price for good apps. So i wont be answering any questions on that.
If you have already gone ahead and tinkered i'd be interested in any info you may have.
Thanks

Alright guys,
So I am pretty much on the same scenario you guys are, I am coming from several rooted Android devices and expected this to be much easier
Here's my HTC info:
Name: HTC HD7
Model: HTC HD7
Carrier: T-Mobile
Software: Windows ® Phone 7.5
OS Version: 7.10.8107.79
Radio SW: 5.71.09.02a_22.51.50.21U
Radio HW: A.12.0.D4
Bootloader: 5.12.2250.0(135916)
I was reading this Thread but apparently I need to use a Y USB cable, in order to flash a Goldcard ROM since I first need to DOWNGRADE my Bootloader version. I am a bit more than lost when it comes to figuring out where to start. Just BTW: It is a stock build, the phone got the OTA update.
Ultimately I need to have a Custom ROM that supports Multiple Languages, as well as no carrier branding
Any suggestions, in plain english?

I am waiting for my HD7 replacement so might be in the same situation. Would it not be possible to enter bootloader and them flash pre nodo original rom?
Goldcard by viperbjk is the easiest and the safest method so far to downgrade our bootloaders....i was on 5.11 and I did the goldcard method and it went on smooth like butter!! I'm currently on bootloader 3.1(HSPL) and flashed the deepshinig v7.6 and I'm loving my phone right now
Just follow the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893152
Good luck! And happy flashing!!
I've been trying to root/install a custom ROM on my HTC One all day and it has been a nightmare throughout. The custom ROM I got did not work correctly, had tons of errors on the simplest tasks. But then I tried to restore a stock ROM and it got stuck on the bootloader. I was able to get a restore on the phone, but I didn't have a functioning ROM I could actually restore with.

PM me and I will see if I can help, I need more info on what you did to get to this point....
You should be able to get it back. I have found that the HTC One isn't the easiest device to brick.
Just give us some more details & the users here can most likely get you up & running again.
Agree.. a Galaxy S2 the One definitely is not.

Can you supply more info? What does your bootloader say?
What rom did you flash to get into this situation?
So this might be a noob question, or answered elsewhere in the forum, but I can't find my exact answer or my phone. For the record rooting wasn't this difficult when I had my HTC Incredible before joining the Apple side for almost 2 years. Anyways I tried to root and successfully did so via towelroot, but upon trying to install liquid smooth rom (if there's any other rom's that are good on battery/ram please let me know haha) I got the dreaded take this phone to a Verizon store message. Well I flashed back to stock via Odin, but I still want to root my device in order to install some sort of rom that'll be nicer to my battery and would appreciate any help that can be given! Thanks in advance guys!
Did you manage to flash a recovery?
