New ROMs. - Nexus 4 General

Same old same old. I know a lot of people here love the vanilla android and that's OK. But I find myself thinking almost every ROM in the nexus4 forum is pretty much the same. Small tweaks and other features but for the most if you have seen one you have seen them all. I pray one day we get a sense port or maybe the optimus LG interface. At this point I would even rock touch wiz or motoblur. Anyway the point of this post was to get other peoples opinions on what they would like to see here in the nexus forums. Also if you known of any roms that really stand out and give a different look, then feel free to discuss or leave suggestions......
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium

develop a rom yourself, ill try it. otherwise the post is rude to all the developers here, spending their own free time getting these roms to us. thats just my 2 cents.

OP, lets not do this....
And a lot of Members are happy with the Free Development being done, but I would suggest if you feel the work/ROM's are "same old", you can take up Developing and share with the Community.
Thanks

I guess having one on here is frowned upon.

Lol, no one is really frowning on you, all that has really been said is what you've been stating isn't constructive...
Yes, this forum is all about making things better and expressing ideas...but in a nice, polite, way...not putting down developers for creating sense roms...
So by all means give ideas, but be constructive...don't just state "there's no developmentm" state what you want to see, and if possible ideas on how it could be done...
So say something like this, "I notice the development of the vivid is lacking here on xda, I would like to see this change...is there anyway I could possibly contribute to the development?"
I personally think xda is about learning and sharing what you have learned...nit neccesarily downloading roms and flashing...but actually learning the process behind Rom development...
I personally am working on developing for the vivid...and let me tell you its not easy...HTC really did a crap job with the phones software when it comes to further development...I have yet to successfully instal this phone's dependencies in apktool...so if you really wanna see a change then your gonna have to help bring the change...start tinkering around with the system apps...start doing a little theming...then eventually start actually developing...its one thing to put something down/critisize/complain about...its another thing to actually step up and change what you don't like...
So please enough with these threads...I know your over at rootz, there's a nice thread over there providing tips on how to build from source...check that out, and if you get something and want to share then share at which ever site you'd like...but bring a change...by creative, be productive...
Sorry if some of that didn't make sense...I just typed whatever my 17 year old brain thought of....don't really stop to actually decide what to say...

State of Development :)

For those of you that have been around these parts for a while, you may remember the State of Development updates that good ol' Gsleon3 used to update us with. These came for us at a time when development for the Vivid seemed to be at a standstill, and for those of you that were here, you remember why. For those of you who don't, let me catch you up a little (and I apologize for the bad feelings that this may drum up, but I don't want anything to get out of control again). So grab a beer and a snack, this may be a long one
It was about April, and development for the Holiday was still in its infancy. There were a few good ROMs being released, and generally, it was a good place to be. Then accusations of stealing other's work, accusations of corrupt moderators, and all around child-like behavior started, and it became the downfall of the Holiday forum at XDA. ROM threads started closing. Then came the bickering. Then the Devs left. Then the users began to play the blame game, and the "let me try to whine my way to what I want" game. All the best devs left and opened up shop in their own little corners of the internet (and I can't blame them one bit), and development for the device was no longer centralized. There were/are still AWESOME ROMs available for this device, just not on XDA. This always made me a little sad. As painful of a place as XDA (or any internet forum for that matter) can be at times, there's sooooo much good information crammed into one site that it has always been my one-stop shop, but that wasn't true any longer. I settled in, I found a home, but I kept a close eye on what else was happening across the interweb's Holiday community. I liked to keep my eye on one project specifically, synergy's CM10 project, because who wouldn't want JellyBean, right?
Now, a little more information for those of you who weren't around.. The original CM10 thread was opened at another site in July, where the project started. Syn put a lot of time and effort into it, but in the end, found it to be not worth his time to continue on a project he didn't see possible to ever be finished (mainly due to the ATT in-call mic issue and video issues), and again, who can blame him? He abandoned the project at the beginning of August. This is where mg picked the project up, and continued it with a few fixes himself, before somehow we caught the attention of h8rift. h8 has been awesome - cleaning up our trees, getting things in their proper home, and powering through anything that gets in his way It's so great to have him around.
Myself, up until October, had only ever had experience with things like making boot animations, icons, editing .xmls in .apks, and some slight .smali edits. Thanks to mg's excellent guide and a crapton of Googling, I learned out how to compile/build cm from source. Then I thought, "I wonder if I could do the same for other JB flavors?" So guess what? I tried, and it worked. Every single question I had along the way (with the exception of a few Ubuntu and git specific questions), were answered by a thread here at XDA. Cool, right?
I am very excited to see new ROMage out for this device...as I'm sure anyone who was here through the "Great Holiday Wars of 2012" would agree, I was pretty sure what we had was all we were ever going to see. Which again, would have been OK, cause there are some great ROMs out there, but I've never been the kind of dude to settle in on the same ROM for too long - that's why I came to XDA in the first place. Now as I'm sure everyone can see, through collaboration, this project is making HUGE progress! I cannot thank mg and h8 enough for keeping it going. This brings me to my last point...
I encourage everyone to participate, and offer suggestions, and share information - that is, after all, what a developer's forum should be about. The wealth of knowledge that's available at XDA is out of this world, but sometimes hiding deep within the threads, filled by off-topic chatter and users who have way to huge a sense of entitlement. Please always keep in mind that the things you're getting here are free. Hours upon hours upon hours of work go into these projects, just to be shared for very little asked in return. Wait, we ask for something in return? Yes - READ, SEARCH, and SEARCH AGAIN before posting. Like I said, there's already a wealth of knowledge here that's incomparable to other Android forums on the web, but yes, sometimes it can be trying to find that information. But it's not impossible. Also - keep an eye on the issues list. There are bugs. There will probably always be bugs. And as long as there are, they will continue to be squished to the best of our ability (though h8's ability is far beyond mine, so let's especially be nice to him )
In closing - PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not let this place become what it was before. So far I feel like the atmosphere around here has been a lot better, but I know how easy it can be for it to slip back to where it was. So be respectful, don't ask for ETAs, and be thankful for what we have - cause what we now have is a TON more options that we had before.
I remember the "Great Holiday Wars of 2012"... it was ugly, didn't even want to visit the site half the time. But things are looking up and I'm glad I didn't return my vivid thirty days after the release date like so many did.

Well said homeslice. Although I haven't been as active in my participation I got the Vivid on day 1 and am really happy to see development where it is today. There were many points I thought the device was basically dead and time and time again it was revived with new life. Hopefully the few left can make sure not to repeat drama mistakes of the past.
And great job on going from a reader to a developer, very well done.
Why is my xda premium app only let me reply/post on certain sections of forums and not development??:banghead:

i think is not fair to close a wip thread to bring a sense 4 rom to the vivid all i wanted to do is help this device users to be on the latest software as i said in the post that was closed i wasn't going to share it to everybody i want it to share it to developers to bring this rom to all users but it got closed for "kanging" which i think is not true since venom team never released a vivid rom even thou the did for rezound which is pretty similar device but cdma and korean's make their work on the rom also to make the radio work which no body here in xda could do after many tries all i want is to help the community and specific this device owners which expect more from this device and we know is capable of running this system and much more please let the development continue we are stuck right know on sense only because someone doesn't want to share their work on other devices which is ok if you are the developer of something and you don't want to share but why stop someone who is trying to help on a device you haven't released a rom I bet that many of the vivid users would like to flash a sense 4.1 rom on their devices

Sorry but we don't approve of the use of our work by non-team members and do not condone the porting of any of our roms to other devices for various reasons. One of those reasons is these roms will never meet the same level of quality and support our users have become accustomed to as such, these roms will never be allowed on xda and will also be refused Venom Hub access.

That's exactly what I want but there is a language barrier, instead of releasing could you try to make it legit here with your team? Please I know there are really good developers and they can find how to make it legit is all I ask I do not want to make an issue out of trying to help others with this device, this device is capable of running this Rom flawless just like the one x or rezound which in fact is is the same device but cdma could you help us or assign this port to one of your team members?
Or if none of you has the vivid let a vivid developer take care of it please we have really good developers here to!!

Let's just drop it. The villec2 should get its jellybean sense+ update soon, and maybe we can port it. Or maybe we can get the Koreans to share their secret. In the meantime, it appears to be elsewhere, so get it there if you must

So, the options are:
1. We remove all of our tweaks from the framework files of a kanged port of one of our roms so that you can use it as a base
2. You find a Korean translator to ask the one who got data working how he did it.
Let's not start more xda drama the vivid forum has already been thru this. Either find someone who speaks Korean to ask to translate or have them remove all of their tweaks like they ask. The vivid has come to far now to start drama over a sense 4 ROM

Thank You to A great developer for a great ROM DjangoManoucheX by carburano

I did not know of carburano's work with the LG Optimus 2X for GB but with ICS I do have to say I really appreciate the time and effort he has put into the development. His thread in the development section is one of the most read and posted thread. I believe it is almost as large as the JB threads and in some cases larger. Even his old GB thread is still being posted to and growing monstrous in size.
I have tried to keep up with his ICS thread but it is so hard with the large number of posts everyday, some seeming to be constant repeats of previously asked questions or small replies to others. In some cases people just quote someone else and add lol. Everything I see points to carburano being very dedicated and committed to his work and followers. I can understand the difficulties he has sifting through the posts looking for good feedback and positive replies to his hard work. I am certain that he reads over every post and each one takes up some of the time he sets aside for us all.
Being such a large and popular thread I was surprised not to see more threads on DjangoManoucheX (yes I even used the search feature) where people would discuss everything from how a particular ril performs to which baseband people are using with his rom. But than again without them being started by the creator of this fabulous rom few people may take them seriously and in some cases may not take the time to search for them.
@carburano thank you for breathing life into my phones have never worked better. I have 3 LG2X's and some nights I may install roms with different kernels to see how they work for a few days, taking note of particular things I like better than others and how things are implemented. I enjoy this type of playing with the phones, I spent many years as a electronics and computer technician and finding something that keeps me this excited is beyond words to explain. Yet after many tests I keep coming back to your rom as the standard.
Please take the popularity of your thread and rom as I hopefully believe it is meant to be, a positive show of how much everyone appreciates your work. Some people may get over excited like kids in a candy store waiting for the store keeper to restock the shelves and sometimes this may lead to them typing to fast or some things lost in translation. Seeing your work and any new release you put out is like Christmas time all over again.
I would have tried to post this on the DM rom thread as I could find no other thread praising your work but 2 things stopped me
1. I am new so can not. I have lurked in the shadows for to long watching and
2. I need to try and figure out what the "on topic" topic's are. So hopefully in the general area is where I should put this.
Thank You again carburano I believe things could not be better with you keeping the phone and your followers so well looked after.
Heya, I'm glad you liked his ROMs but the thing is carburano is not a developer, he is a "rom cooker". . He "cooks" a rom using the preferences/addons/themes etc.. he likes.
Other than that, I support this post. I think he is a great contributor to this community.
thanks carburano.
Thanks
I appreciate the clarification in terminology. I am behind and need to catch up some.
My main goal was to try and express my gratitude and maybe others for the work he puts in to make our life and phones better and easier.
Hello...
Carburano is a great cooker, and even so good that we could say developer, at least he's able to give Roms as good as he was a 'developer'.. And a good person as far as I 'know' him
But the community deceived me a lot theses days because they didn't really understand the meaning of XDA and of what he is doing, for FREE.
He would not provide his update to everyone because some have though his thread was a general/Q&A thread... and what some replied ?! "Ok, no problem, we don't care, if you don't provide us a even better Rom every week we switch to an other". But boys tell me, what's are the problems that 'everybody' encounter with the 1.4 ? It is fully and absolutely working, stock based and theme with a kernel that LG was dreamimg to build but wasn't even able to.
So what do theses guys want... every developer deserve respect for what they are giving to our phone which was at the beginning made for the developer's phone only, so you can't complain of anything about what Carburano is doing
@Carburano: Thank a lot for what you gave us, giving our old phone an extended life

A sad day it is.
When we take something for granted that was given for free and than expect to be treated like we paid for it.
carburano and other developers / chef's / cookers already have enough things to do with there own life that their free time and evenings should be spent doing the things they love because they want to and not because people try to make them feel bad about not giving all their time to one thing.
I have stayed off forums on many different websites and out of the conversation because I am more than happy to patiently wait for the next release or happy to work out all the bugs that I can on my own before I bother anyone, but now it is to late I should have joined earlier if for nothing else than to click on the thanks button.
@carburano because of the great work I have seen in your rom it has peaked my curiosity to maybe give it a try myself and see what I can do with my phones. It is a good thing there are high quality developers and chefs on XDA that I can try to seek guidance from. I would expect there are alot of people who do create their own custom roms but also keep them private to avoid the stress that seems to be taking over.
I learned from playing addictive online games that Real Life takes priority and you need to take the time to ensure it does not slip past you while you look at the computer screen.
No problem man.. You are absolutly true, the community have been really disrespectful towards you and your life that we all know very busy, and I really hope that your decision will make some minds change..
Again, thank for your work..
Hi carburano, i really reeeally reeeeeeeally love your work on DMX. I always come back to your rom when i try others rom's. That speed, smoothnes, battery life.
Well, now its over because some idiot's. :banghead:

Take the advice of your quote and live well, your work speaks for itself. If you decide to share any further work I know there are dedicated people who are more than willing to provide positive feedback to what works and does not work. My wife gets mad at me when I change her phone because I see something I want to test out on it so I will have to just keep playing with my other 2 LG2X's for now.

Not for me. I want my O2X to live forever.
I've just had my power button replaced, and I'm even considering buying a new battery for it just so I can make it feel new.
Welll guys...

Man, this is sad because of a few stupid guys, we lose a great dev like you ! :crying:
I've been a fan from your first ICS release, I loved your jokes during install, like the cookie recipe and the fake windows install !
Now I have DM X1.2 and can't update anymore
Can you send a link for us who enjoyed all your hard work ? :good:
Thanks for your time and work Carburano, don't let stupid people upset you !
But Carburano, why so many of us have to be punished this way like the bad ones? I'm still at Stock 2.3, when I see the news about DjangoManouche X 1.5 I see the perfect rom to my phone. I just hope some day I can use your rom, because to me, your rom seem to be the best one. We will miss you man!

Hey mate,
I do have one suggestion which you might want to try.
Create an Q&A or userthread in the general section, where people can post more freely.
Add big fat red lines at your op stating that every kind of offtopic needs to get posted there and only posts for bug reports etc. are allowed in your dev thread.
Then consequently report users who break the ground rules.
If someone does it continuously ask the mods if they could hand him an infraction.
This forum is about development and contributions - not about dumbasses who can't keep their mouth shut and think they need to clutter threads in the development section.

I tried to find Waldo and failed
Well I looked in the official release thread for DM 1.5 link and I think I found the post where carburano had placed his link but I think it has already been removed or maybe moved to a new post due to the problems that thread was having. No one wanted to be subjected to the same problems he was having. That is sorting through all the extra off topic posts.
For some people I hope it opened their eyes to the problem, for others all they could do was complain about it even though carburano posted the exact page where he shared.
I'am happy playing with 1.4 it works great.
@carburano good job in the way you posted the link, if even a few people now think twice before they post threads or where they post them I would say you accomplished the task of educating them.
I will keep looking in my spare time, maybe get lucky one day.
I need link for Dm1.5?Thnks.

Beta to Final..."a long wait"

its known that development for our phone is difficult due to lack of hardware sources...still developers are trying to port things up for this...
but its been a quite long time since in the development thread almost all roms are in beta stage..they are reaching to usable stage...I would request devs to speed up the process and please dont put everything under beta for long periods...
I guess that everyone works with blood sweat and tears on their roms. Just have some patience...

To be honest, very few number of people use this phone... Its not as popular as S3 or S2 (thats the main drawback of most mid range phones)
And out of all those users, only a very few number of people have knowledge about Android (aka the developers).... And since we're always busy with our lives, jobs, exams, classes, etc. So no one can give complete attention to all this...
Yes, after the JB update - this phone got a boost in a "Development" point of view... I mean we now have more ROMs, themes, Mods, etc... But i believe that all we need are more experienced developers (and users) to help the existing developers and contribute something to this phone's dev support...
As Shaaan said, we are all good at something... So why not form a team and utilize it for better and faster development process for this phone

I would demand from you to learn to develop, and make all that betas to be final. How that sounds? You would do that in the speed of the light.
And please turn on the brain for little time and see that all those beta ROMs are mods of CM, that is in beta stage. And we do not have sources to fix all the bugs fast.

^ What he said, if you can't wait for it, do it yourself.
Tired of this kind of people who can't contribute something other than demanding. Maybe if you can ''DONATE'' thats the least you can do rather than learning how to develop instead of posting nonsense. Ok? Just a suggestion bro.

nobody is expecting to get something done with the speed of light ....i am just saying that if some project is started wait for the final version should not be this long and cm10.1 was started months ago still no final version then whats the point of starting new projects based on that... as far as time availability i concerned nobody is forcing anyone to start a new stuff and hang up in beta they have their own will to do that...and the one who is tired of people like me i would humbly request you to not comment rather you should contribute community needs you....commenting will make you feel tired...
that was an opinion if you are really hurt by that...please learn to look at things differently
This guy is real piece of work....
Do you even know what beta means ?? If devs hold on to the project until its final, how the hell would they get people to test it ???
As for how long a beta takes, you are in no position to demand anything. Dev's work for free to give you a better phone experience, if you want things done fast, grab a pile of you own money, pay a bunch of people to develop something for you. Whenever someone is doing free work for you, the right thing to do is keep you head down and be grateful that they even share their work with you for free.

How can you even expect CM10.1 to work. It's 4.2 based... damn...
And no one says you can't give your opinion, it's just the way you said it. With your post you insulted everyone trying to work on CM etc because according to YOU the development doesn't go as fast as you want.
And don't say: don't play teacher on me I just have an opinion. Because I AM a damn teacher and you need to be taught some patience...

LOL to those who can't wait. Buy a new phone, more popular ones. Then enjoy it to your heart content. End of story.
There will be more beta's then there will be rc's before final version. If you can't wait, might as well consider buying other device. Your choice. No argument here

I just got my Nexus 5, and I'm a little disappointed...

Not about the hardware- that's nothing short of exceptional to me. What I'm wondering is, why are all the new Kitkat based custom roms so stripped-down? I know it's new, and I'm also not a developer but I can appreciate the hard work that goes into making them. On all my devices I've been able to count on roms like CyanogenMod and others to add the subtle tweaks that I feel should have come from the factory. CM 10.2 was a killer ROM and had all the features I needed. I've tried some of these new KK roms and theyre either too much, or too vanilla. All the OP's say they're starting clean. I'm sure someone will tell me "Learn how to build your own if you don't like it" but does anyone know if/when the devs plan to start incorporating features back? I hope no one takes offense to this, as that is not my intention. I'm just trying to understand why this happened. Was it like this when ICS and JB came out?
I agree with you...
Just ask google for a refund
Sent from **Nexus 5 sucks**
I think streamlined is the term you are searching for. I've been using Android for quite some time now and lightweight is what I prefer. Plus, it's inevitable to have a little more functionality with custom ROMs.
Not trying to offend, but it sounds to me like you haven't been around Android for very long if you weren't around for the ICS to JB update. So with that, I'm glad you're on board. So sit back, relax, and enjoy your amazing phone that has a pure Android experience.
Keep flashing and I'm certain you'll find the perfect fit for you.

When they feel like it, or install the xposed framework and some of its modules.
"Why this happened?" Probably because the phone has been available for barely over a month. Nothing "happened." I've never seen so much development on a new phone in such a short period of time. Jeez.
Just wait...
Inviato dal mio Nexus 5 utilizzando Tapatalk
All devs on all devices start by making the base as stable as possible first. Only THEN do the features get added in.
Remember, this is a Nexus device. It is the first device to receive kitkat. It takes time for devs to build features back in to a new base. They don't just "slot in". They need to be amended, debugged and sometimes completely re-written
You're an early adoptor of the nexus. ALL brand new devices takes time to develop for. But imagine you buy the next HTC device released in 6 months time with kitkat... cm devs have been working with kitkat sources for 7 or 8 months by that time. The features will almost just "slot in" but on a brand new base, it takes a lot of time. Im not sure you really do appreciate the hard work involved
Its also worth noting, cm's feature set is identical across all kitkat builds on all devices. Its only the device tree that varies

The phone and 4.4 are brand new. Slim and CM are developing their Roms. Patience is virtue.

To everyone who wrote a useful, non-sarcastic response, thank you. You answered my questions. To the jerks, I have one word. Karma.
I am on the stock rom and I have nearly all the features and tweaks that custom roms have.
Just install xposed framework and gravitybox module and you should be alright. You can download more modules depending on your needs.

Try Slim rom, they have a good amount of added features now.

The CM features are coming, don't worry! Then AOKP will be up, and then AOSPA, then you won't know what to do with yourself! It just takes a bit for the developers to redo features for the brand new version of Android. We've been a bit spoiled in that the transition from the Jellybean 4.x.x updates weren't terribly hard to push code up for, but KitKat has a lot more going on under the hood.
Edit: and if you recall how CM6 and CM7 looked, the streamlined look also makes for a MUCH easier UI, vs the clutter that kinda existed in the froyo and GB days.

You have to understand that the devs here aren't getting paid for what they do. They have jobs and lives outside of Android development, and they do this in their spare time for free. For you to pop in and start a thread in the forums for a brand-new phone basically saying "hey guys, why aren't you developing more" comes off as kind of rude. You're new here so I'm sure that wasn't your intention, but you have to understand that some patience is required with a brand-new phone and a brand-new version of Android. I'm amazed at the amount of development that we already have, to be honest.
All you need is Xposed and Gravity Box. I'm running stock rooted with those two, and I got my Rom exactly how I like it.

Can you please point me to where I said they should do something faster? Because frankly, I'm not seeing it. In fact, I specificially said that I appreciate the hard work that goes into them. All I was asking, was to be educated on why all the roms were starting clean. It seems some people understood this, and offered relevant responses while others simply flamed. It's no wonder that people get a bad taste of these forums with the way they get treated, when they simply asked a question and even carefully worded it so as not to be offensive or greedy.
When we went from ICS to JB, it wasn't like this. Devs didn't 'start fresh' like this. So clearly something DID happen, i.e. a change of some kind, that led them to do what they are doing. And all I wanted was to be educated on what that was! Not once did I say that these hard working people with lives who do this for FREE should do it FASTER. But people, who are possibly only semi-literate, immediately assume that someone is saying what they are clearly NOT saying. Is it boredom that leads people to jump on someone in a forum for no reason? Either say something constructive and don't be a warmonger, or move on.

THIS WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!! THANK YOU!! What a simple answer, that was not negative in any way, that told me what I was looking for. Thank you for not being insulting, and just telling me that it was easier to do JB updates than KK. So like I said, something was different about KK that made it more difficult to code for. Thank you for keeping in the spirit of constructively helping others.
