Hi guys,
Before I flash the CoCore kernel I would like to know to backup my current stock kernel in XXLGQ (italy) in case something goes wrong or I don't like.Do nandroid backups contain the kernel?
So, how can I flash back the stock kernel only and NOT the entire firmware of XXLQG (via Odin or any other method-Noob-friendly)?
P.S: I've read somewhere that I could delete all the files, and leave only kernel.bin.md5 and kernel2.bin.md5 and remove .md5 extennsion of the main stock firmware, leaving it just .tar, and flash it with odin just like firmware. Will it work?
Thank you!
Or you can use Terminal Emulator and go back on stock with few simple commands.
( Uninstall custom kernel)
Flash stock kernel to uninstall. Type in Terminal Emulator this lines:
su
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p17 of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p15
Reboot
Note: After each line press enter on the keyboard
* mmcblk0p17 is a backup of stock kernel in phone
* If not sure, flash stock kernel via Odin

Stock kernel cant do a nandroid backup, so ...
The method with "dd" is risky for me becouse im noob. But do the CWM backups also the kernel? And will the method explained above with Odin works also?Thank you!
CWM work only on custom kernel. So...

hi,
i'm going to flash a custom ROM to my i896, i'm currently on stock ROM + speedmod k12t, have already disable lagfix, and backup all data.
i did researched, but what i want to know is not there.
i know i need to be on stock ROM to before flash, since i'm on stock rom, i still have some questions
so i got 2 questions:
1. do i need to flash back to restore kernel before flashing ROM?
2. after flashed ROM, do i need to flash the speedmod kernel aagain?
thank you.

1. no, you don't need to flash to the stock kernel;
2. usually the rom comes with certain version of kernel, you can definitely replace it if you want to use the latest speedmod, for example.
thank you so much.
i got another question
i use odin3 to flash ROM
i put the ROM file in the PDA section. leave phone and CSC blank.
but what should i put in PIT section?

usually i only use odin3 to flash to the stock rom. you need to put .pit file in the PIT and a tar file in PDA.
but since you are flashing to a custom rom, usually you can get the cwm file and use cwm to flash. it is easy and quick.
yes root phone grab rom manager from app market is easy as pie
grab files 2 flash put them in sd card by phone browser or with usb cable and pc, flash with rom mamanger is easy as 1 2 3
if any more help is needed ill c if i can find thread link tonight also there is a vids on Congnition 3.04 thread makes life easy sence your stock allready u can skip odin if u like but that is perfered way
When I flash new roms, I drop zip onto my sd then boot CWrecovery, then flash zip from clockwork recovery, without using rom manager. I had an issue restoring a nandroid backup i made using Rom manager (md5 sum issue?) and i couldn't restore the backup. I read somewhere this can happen from time to time. Rom Manager is good, you can rename your backups. Flashing roms gets addictive!!

About the md5 sum error, sometimes having spaces in your backup name will make it say that. Remove spaces and it should work again.

If I upload custom kernel on my Galaxy S with 2.3.4 JVQ, is it possible to revert to original JVQ kernel in order to check if same issue will appear on original kernel to detect if custom kernel has bug?
Thanks.
Flash as pda with odin.

To get just the stock kernel in a flashable state you need to extract the zImage file from stock ROM (either one file or PDA of 3-file), then put it in a tar file by itself. Then you flash that as PDA with Odin.
I'm just going to expand a bit.
Find a single file tar of the stock firmware that is meant to be flashed as a PDA. Use winrar to look inside the .tar file to get the zImage and put it in a tar by itself. You can then flash it as PDA in Odin.

I thought that it is proper way to extract zImage from original ROM but I wasn't sure that it is good way. Thanks, I will try in this way.
I created zImage.TAR with 7-zip but Odin cannot load it. It comes to step when zImage should be loaded but upload is not happening. Do I have to exec some certain parameters when zipping it in TAR with 7-zip or how can I do it?
EDIT: I managed to make proper (flashable) TAR with IZarc application. Nevertheless, I uploaded stock zImage but I still have root access although other mooded kernel specific applications are gone. So, basically, I didn't revert it to original state. Or I am wrong? Please, advise.
Thanks.
Rooting doesn't necessarily mean changing kernel. You can root a completely stock phone and still use stock kernel. You can also unroot the phone.
You can use the SGS kernel flasher free app to flash a zImage directly from the phone.

He's right, root often stays behind. To get back to stock just do a factory reset.
Make sure you can get into download mode before flashing just in case.

I've read through many threads, but in most they discribe to root a phone via flashing the kernel
like here.
and i also would like to have a backup of my stock kernel, if i would flash it, but i'm not sure from which version i should take it. i do have JVH, but i can't find a fitting csc (it's MOBJV2) on samfirmware or google.
Hi,
I'm attempting to repair a Galaxy Note with partitioning problems. However I can not get rid of CWM Recovery on it in order to parse the CSC script that will help clean this up as CWM Recovery does not work with the Samsung CSC scripts. Does anyone have a link to a stock recovery.bin or recovery.tar file? I have flashed stock firmwares which contain all files except for recovery, yet I'm still stuck with CWM Recovery.
Thanks in advance,
-Josh
Hmmmm, nobody has a recovery file? Can anyone who is rooted with stock recovery dump that partition for me perhaps?

How can I do it?
It's technically part of the zimage kernel but all the stock ones I flash still leave me stuck with CWM recovery and I can not get rid of it. Can you run this command from adb shell...
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 of=/sdcard/zImage bs=4096
Then grab the file it creates and upload it to this thread.
Cant you just flash a stock ROM via Odin, using the pit file and re-partition? This should wipe and replace with only stock recovery. Always works for me.
EDIT: Or if its just to parse the CSC script, why not extract the CSC zip from the cache.img file and flash manually in CWM Recovery? Or am i misunderstanding what you are trying to achieve?
EDIT 2: Cant you grab this from the Samsung kernel sources?
Well,
The issue ended up being a h/w fault of the EMMC chip. No matter what would get "written" to the device, nothing would take. I eventually was able to locate a full-flash of a JTAG dump from this model but even after writing it, all symptoms and CWM recovery remained. Thanks for the help to those that posted solutions!
your problem is solved but i want that file. someone please upload that file here.i need it badly......
i'm not see in threat abyss kernel page one, that kernel for what kind rom..., so last night i flashing abys kernel 4.2final in my ics rom DXLP9, and now my device stuck in abyss logo boot...
so, what should i do now? have idea?
1. i try flashing rom via odin pc, but stuck procesing at cache image
2. i try flashing speedmod kernel3.3. tar via odin pc, but stuck procesing at zimage
can you go into abyss recovery mode? if can just proceeds to restore a nandroid backup or find a compatible ver of cfroot kernel and flash it via abyss. btw, you should dont ever try to flash any custom kernel via pc odin since you will ended up with a yellow triangle.

i'm not yet do a nandroid backup..
i think cf-root cannot install from recovery..(must flash zimage with cwm app or flash *.tar with odin pc)..
i have plan to flashing kernel dxlp9 with odin pc, but i googling it, not found..
thx for your attention about custom kernel...
boot into abyssnote recovery and flash the speedmod k3-3 ZIP file.

CF-Root CANNOT be flashed via CWMR, because it doesn't contain any updater script. It can be flashed either by using PC or Mobile Odin.

weird it work on me lol
do i understand that right, that i can root my stock gingerbread by flashing this cwm/philz kernel, without the need to wipe any data?
i just want to flash ultimate rom. it says i need cwm. i don't fully understand why cwm comes together with a kernel and why that kernel gives root on any rom. how to root topic doesn't mention the flashing of just a kernel to get root. i guess i got something wrong here?
baseband XXLA4 - GB 2.3.6
You cannot flash PhilZ kernel on a GB Rom. It wouldn't boot up if you did.

for the Note the kernel and recovery are integrated, each kernel has a corresponding cwm recovery and root features too
so when you want to root a rom you have to flash a suitable kernel which will give it a cwm recovery to flash custom roms from and it will also give root features too.
Phillz kernels root stock ICS Touchwizz roms when flashed from stock recovery. after a complete reboot you can safely wipe from recovery and flash custom roms.
BTW - this thread belongs to the QA forum.

but would let me use cwm to backup and flash another rom?
You can't flash ANYTHING from stock 3e GB recovery. It won't pass signature verification.
(Unlike ICS). You need to root it first, then use an app such as mobile odin to flash a kernel which has CWM recovery.

Edit: to root GB without going through Dr. Ketans long winded process, just download Chainfires exynos app from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35512626 click on it, and select root device

unfort my kernel is not bugged. can i flash a bugged kernel?
i think i understood that i need to use odin to flash on a GB device? if so, i hope i can directly flash ultimate custom rom using odin?
1. Root Gb
2. Install Mobile Odin
3.Flash Cf-Root or Abyss (both are GB with CWM recovery)
4.Boot into recovery, do wipes and flash new ROM.
NOTE: custom roms can't be flashed with Odin.
