[Q] USB OTG help!! - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently bought an OTG chord.
It works fine with all devices on FAT32.
I have a seagate HDD (500 GB) which is in NTFS format.
The problem is,
1. I took a pendrive that worked well (on FAT32).
2. Then i formatted as NTFS.
3. Now it didnt mount.
4. I have root so I used "StickMount" app on playstore to force mount NTFS formated USB.
5. Now the pendrive mounted easily(even with NTFS format)
BUT my hard Drive still fails to mount!!
infact, a flickering beeping noise can be heard from the HDD (The HDD works fine on my PC)
So the question is why is that so??
Is it something like, HTC ONE OTG cannot support 500 GB??
Or flashing a kernel with ALL OTGs COMPATIBILITY will do the trick??
Has anybody successfully mounted 500 GB HDD??

If its only a usb powered drive the HO wont be giving enough power to the hdd hence the beeping noise from the drive, you could try a mains powered drive to see if that works.

NTFS is not natively supported. However there is a root app that allows r/rw of NTFS partitions

It's not just about power, NTFS is just not supported in stock Sense 5 regardless if the USB stick uses 0 power

Even not with StickMount app???
then in that case anyway to connect HDD to phone via OTG??

StickMount requires root Like I said, only rooted apps can currently r/rw on NTFS drives for HTC One.

USB OTG and TWRP?

Hello there
I am able to mount my flash drive using my OTG cable when running my ROM (TrickDroid) just fine by using this application to mount it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.shajul.usbotg&hl=en&rdid=net.shajul.usbotg&rdot=1
However I cannot for the life of me mount it using TWRP, which is why I got the OTG cable in the first place so I can format my SD card and then install a ROM without having to push/sideload it using ADB which takes a lot of time and isn't very practical and a bit messy. When I press Install and choose OTG USB I see beside it (0MB) and it's not mounting, of course.
Thanks
Please remove this thread, I have already fixed it by formatting the flash drive as FAT32 instead of NTFS.

Any USB-OTG compatible kernel/rom/tweak/mod?

I want to use a USB OTG cable to make nandroid backups on a USB drive.. And, if possible, I want to be able to access files from solid explorer..
I'm currently on stock 5.0.2, stock kernel.. USB mouse works, but USB drive doesn't..
Anyone can confirm a working rom, kernel, mod, tweak or recovery that supports USB-OTG?

I'm using File Explorer app (fx)
I made it work on stock lollipop!
USB drive was formatted with fat32, and it was not recognized by CM12.1.. So I decided to format it using android (in storage settings).. Then it worked! I unplugged otg cable and connected USB drive to my laptop, and filesystem was still fat32 (maybe android handles it with another method?)..
Then I restored my stock 5.0.2 nandroid backup, plugged it and it still worked! I finally plugged it on recovery and still works!
Lollipop is already compatible with USB drives, but they need to be formatted using android
I think your USB drive could have been formatted with some unsupported partition layout mbr/gpt.
My phone has recognized every USB drive I plug in but only shows the first partition when I tried a drive with many partitions (w8.1 installation for example)

Last time I made a bootable drive, it was memtest.. Then I deleted all partitions and created a FAT32 partition using CMD->diskpart
I'm REALLY sure it had 1 partition before formatting with android

i assumed i could just plug it in and it would be recognized by any file explorer like es file explorer
i didn't receive any instructions or anything with it not sure what is needed to do to make it work
I have the same otg drive. All I did was: Plugged it in, went to Settings, Storage and erased usb storage. Checked in Solid Explorer and everything was good to go.

yeah, i don't get it this thing must be defective and very well could be since i got it from Amazon Warehouse.
I have even tried using Stickmount which supossedly mounts these drives for Nexus devices and it will not mount. i can't see it no matter what i try. just tried reformatting as well and nothing.

i want to say it is formatted in NTFS but i will try fat32 as well? i know ive tried two different formats as well. doesn't show up anywhere. from all the yotube videos i've watched minimally it is recognized with an icon when plugged in. i've never gotten that
EDIT - ok went and made certain to format to fat32. had to download a tool to do it in windows since my drive is 64gb. still will not recognize this drive. i rebooted, nothing. damn, no idea why.

I'm not sure if ntfs will work or not, I'm almost certain it will not, but I haven't tried it. I'm only suggesting fat32 because that's what mine is. When I plug it in, an icon shows in the status bar for just a split second.
Edit: Just seen your edit. I have no idea why either. I can't imagine anything being wrong with it, since it works fine on your computer? Will twrp recognize it? (If you have twrp installed)

in TWRP i assume it is not recognizing it either, but it does list USB-OTG (0MB)
there is nothing on the disc at all so twrp must just list usb-otg by default and it won't let me select it either

Just to make sure, for it to mount in twrp, you do need to have the USB plugged in before twrp boots. Twrp does list usb-otg by default. When it's working properly it will show the amount of free space in place of the 0MB.

ok yes, i definitely had it correct then. had it plugged in before going to twrp.
essentially, i bought a return at a low price off of Amazon warehouse. i don't understand how this thing could be fine in a pc or my chromebook, but it definitely will not show up on android. it must be defective. it would help if there were a light or something on the flash drive to show when its connected though.
i just tried it in my galaxy mega and it didn't show up either.
so i'll return it and try another one. i appreciate you trying to help.

Yeah I guess it might be defective. Maybe try another fat32 formatter? (Probably won't help any) I used 2Tware to format mine. Good luck anyways though!
I don't see any mention in this thread of EXFAT. I say this because I was having problems just yesterday (coincidentally) with TWRP 2.8 not recognising my OTG USB formatted as NTFS. Although TWRP showed the NTFS USB in the backup destination list, I couldn't select it. When I formatted as EXFAT, it worked in Windows, Lollipop & TWRP.
Method - Windows 10, Tools, Format - dropdown box select EXFAT.
(I believe that Stickmount provides an extension for reading & writing NTFS USB volumes, but that doesn't help for TWRP.)
Give it a go - nothing to lose...
I found I had to install Stickmount to mount my usbotg drives. I did install the supplemental files that allow ntfs and it works fine to mount/unmount external memory including an external 750Gb hard disk. [Edit] Didn't try with TWRP.

[SOLVED]OTG not working!!! Please help

I've 2 K3 notes and one is rooted and another untouched system.
I've tried paragon ntfs mounter to mount my HDD. Before I used paragon mounter I could get my HDD power on nd get detected as blank media. After using paragon mounter I'm not able to power on HDD or charge any other mobile via otg. I'm able to power on HDD and charge other mobiles with untouched system K3N.
So I flashed stock rom again to my rooted one but problem not solved :crying: please help
Thanks in advance

I know it doesn't work but it can power up them. Please read the thread again correctly
Why on earth would you want to power up a HDD knowing you can't access/transfer files?
Seems mighty queer to me.
And your topic sounds misleading...are you saying usb flash drives works fine but external HDDs don't work?
Coz thats what OTG is supposed to do...powering external HDD and charging other phones is not OTG.
Anyways...wish you luck and hope some devs help you out.
HDD requires a huge power supply which u wont get from mobile.

Is USB Mass storage possible?

I Is it possible to mount the internal storage as USB Mass Storage device on the PC. I like to sync the memory to PC from time to time. It is important that the internal storage is mounted as a separate drive and not a portable device.

Yes, just select the USB notification you get when you connect it and instead of charging you can choose to mount it as a drive.

When I select File Transfer option, it mounts as a portable device and not with a drive letter. As a portable drive I am able to access the files but cannot do automated backups using many backup software. Need to mount with a drive letter.

There's a reason for that. Read this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/192732/android-usb-connections-explained-mtp-ptp-and-usb-mass-storage/
Alternatively, you could enable USB debugging and use ADB commands or something to back up device data.
If your rooted try USB mass storage enabler (UMS enabler v1.6). I have not tried it myself

Our phones CAN NEVER do USB Mass Storage, NO MATTER WHAT.
http://www.howtogeek.com/192732/android-usb-connections-explained-mtp-ptp-and-usb-mass-storage/
We use EXT4 or F2FS, but not FAT(16) or FAT32 anymore.

Lol! My linux box can read any file system. The issue is that internal storage is part of data now.
That said usb mass storage drivers work fine. There is a virtual cd drive with drivers. Im just wondering what linux /dev that is on the phone so I can wipe it and cram something else in there… make a rescue boot out of my phone!

If you want to boot a distro or windows or even a UBCD type ISO from the phone, that's what DriveDroid is for.

I tried it. It doesnt work at all on my device (OnePlus 3T) and the interface blows badly, although I hacked my own APK that works great. No interface, just tap an ISO from anywhere.
