Hi all, im a newbie to the forum and android so please be patient with my lack of knowledge! Basically, my problem is as follows when I am trying to update my fresh out the box HTC One:
"Variant system version"
" We have determined that your phone may be running a modified version of its system software. For your protection we cannot update your phone. Please revert your phone to official HTC system software to update your phone. If you did not modify your system software or would like help reverting your system, please contact us via the support section at HTC"
So far I have determined, the device is "locked" and "S-Off". I also noticed it said "this is a test device" somewhere. How do I get rid of this? Is there an easy way to wipe it all and have the software which the HTC One is meant to come with?
Please help!
Same thing
I have exactly the same issue with my new HTC one (received yesterday) - I wonder if HTC have sent out a bunch of phones with the wrong firmware on?
Are any other one users able to comment on whether this is normal / usual behaviour?
Thanks!
It seems to me ,as your phone was flashed by the seller, can be for a debranding or or for other reasonl

Thanks guys... I wanted you to check as there are fakes around but these seem to be genuine.
HTC__001 are the WWE edition but the radio is not one I've seen before and the fact they are supplied s-off is extremely unusual.
The problems trying to update via OTA usually occur when the bootloader has been unlocked and a custom recovery installed but this is not the case here.
One more thing to check... look in settings>about>software information>more and let me know what the build number is.
To be honest though it's looking like you'll have to get back to Amazon on this or contact HTC.
In this case the software version doesn't approach to MID/CID.
Most likely, someone (seller? ) used the wrong CID for current software, or flashed improper software trying to make phone debranding.
Return phone to the seller ! In this phone the informal interference was made.
HTC doesn't sell phones with S-OFF!

Ok.... that's completely wrong.... it's a Vodafone software build. That's why the software won't update... 1.28.161.7 and HTC__001 is a mismatch!
It looks like you've purchased a refurbished phone sold to you as new so I'd get on to Amazon if I we're you.

Same issue here supplied by Amazon uk.
Mulling over to return or keep as may want to install custom rom in the future.
Amazon have sold out so prices seem to be about £50 higher now and are market sellers.

It doesn't matter if it's £50 more they should still replace it with a valid phone.
You could load a custom rom but what happens if you need to make a warranty claim?
They can't replace they've run out. Going back for refund. I will leave review on Amazon to warn others.
Lady on phone assured me it was a new item.
Anyway will get refund and try to buy elsewhere because it's a lovely phone.
Are these 'new' phones from amazon being packaged as new phones? With the cellophane boxes and plastic wrappers around the phone, etc?

I was initially suspicious to see HTC label cut and a clear round sealing patch over it. Thought maybe it had been a distance selling return, ie change of mind. I guess that's what I wanted to think instead of returning right away.

Might be worth reporting this to your local Trading Standards office.... this is definitely dodgy
You're possibly right but it's easier to move on and not buy from Amazon in future.
I'll put a review on there once I get the money back.
Meanwhile need to order a new one as can't put my sim back in the old phone due to cutting it down

If you have a local phone retailer you should be able to get a sim adaptor which will let you put it in your old phone for now.

Hi there,
Is it as simple as just flashing a stock rom (RUU)? If this is the case, which RUU version do I need, I have an unlocked phone (Europe, Belgium).
Need to revert back to stock because I need to get it fixed under warranty.
I am aware there are some guides on the forum, but I haven't found a clear one yet...

Yes now that you have the ROM installed, you need to remove S-Off and Revolutionary HBOOT if you want it completely stock to return for warranty.
Search this forum for the process to remove Revolutionary.
I've searched the forums and came up with yet again a number of posts all describing another process. I really don't want to brick it, so if you would be so kind to give me the link that'll work on my incredible s .

Since you have the new 2.02 hboot, you need to refer to this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1373697
Alternatively, if you're only doing it to delete apps why don't you go to settings -> apps -> select app and disable it? You don't need any root permissions for that

Yeah I was thinking of doing that. With the correct RUU it would remove the TAMPARED and the RELOCKED and have it set to just LOCKED is that correct? Just want to be sure as again this is my first HTC.

they can't do you much in EU, because there are consumer protection laws in place. if they don't repair your phone you have right to demand that they need to prove you that you destroyed your device with softwar. hardware faults are rarely caused by software...

To be honest the main reason I was bringing it back was because the top part of the glass was sightly sticking out which is annoying, that's a build issue and now there's a stuck pixel, tried the programs but do those even work or whats a decent timeframe to run them for ?
I do believe if it's software related the warranty then should be voided if the bootloader is unlocked but these are clearly build related.

This is my first HTC as well.
In a way it's a second with HTC since I was helping a family relative debranding her HTC One S (US T-Mobile version) recently and I gotten the tampered message as well. I followed this guide for that phone and it went away.

Unlocking the bootloader cannot affect HTCs build quality, same with the dead pixels. You can still return the phone to HTC under RMA even after unlocking the bootloader. No where on HTCs dev site does it say you will completely lose warranty by unlocking, just some aspects. They will take the phone in and assess the problem, which in your case should be fine, as rooting a phone cannot make the screen pop out and kill pixels contact HTC about the issue, some guy had a similar issue with his One and they sent him a new one!

In Europe they can only refuse warranty if the software messes the phone. If a locked phone decides to brick itself, they have to repair it, if YOU brick it its hard cheese. Any hardware failure is still HTCs problem.
I love you guys

Hi,
I'm a HTC and Android newbie in the UK. I recently purchased a sim free HTC One from Amazon UK. Here is my current software information:
Android Version: 4.1.2
HTC Sense Version: 5.0
Software number: 1.28.161.7
I have never rooted the phone, so this is the factory setting.
I did a software update check and I was informed that software update 1.29.161.11 (228.36MB) is available, but once it is downloaded, it won't install with the message that it is a Variant System Version. This is strange as I never changed the software as it is straight out of the box!

Even with hard reset, the problem still exists. I also noticed that it comes with some Vodafone UK specific app pre-installed such as Discover and Updates.
How do I get the software update to work? I want to get the latest 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and I don't want any of the Vodafone junk on my supposedly Sim Free phone!
Thanks.
It's not straight out of the box...
Looks like maybe someone had the phone, ran S-OFF, changed the CID, ran a Vodafone RUU or backup to get back to 'stock' so they could sell it, then changed to CID HTC__001.
Nevertheless, if it was straight out of the box it would be S-ON.
Edit: or had a Vodafone phone, unlocked the SIM and changed the CID to unbranded...
It's running the Vodafone UK ROM, yet the CID has been set to the unbranded phone. Definitely looks like it's a returned phone

Just thinking about I would be fuming even if it was a 2nd hand sim free phone the OP paid for a sim free phone so they should get a sim free phone not a hacked vodafone one where he does not know what else has been done to it.

Hi,
I'm a HTC and Android newbie in the UK.
Here are some info from HBOOT:
*** LOCKED ***
M7_UL PVT SHIP S-OFF RH
CID-HTC__001
HBOOT-1.44.0000
RADIO-4V.13.3231.27
OpenDSP-v26.120.274.0202
eMMC-boot
Mar 7 2013,20:26:34:-1
Even with hard reset, the problem still exists. I also noticed that it comes with some Vodafone UK specific app pre-installed such as Discover and Updates.
How do I get the software update to work? I want to get the latest 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and I don't want any of the Vodafone junk on my supposedly Sim Free phone!
Thanks.

As you are s-off you can simply download and run RUU 1.28.401.7 http://bugsylawson.com/files/file/1...13323127-1031113105-release-310878-signedexe/ to return your device to the generic WWE htc rom and receive updates.
When downloaded make sure fastboot is unchecked in settings/power then turn off your device. Restart it by pressing power whilst holding the volume down button. Scroll to fastboot using the volume down button then press the power button to highlight it.
Next, plug your device into your pc's usb and double click the RUU file. Once completed, you should recieve 3 consequetive ota updates up to 2.24.401.7 (4.2.2)

That's all well and good if the customer is happy to keep the phone but if it was bought as 'brand new' then it's clearly not! I'd be off to Phone 4 U and buy it SIM free and check it out first...

I bought it straight from Amazon UK full price and supposed to be a completely new phone, and YES I'm fuming!!
Seems like I'm not the only one getting this batch of phones, there are two others here:

Personally speaking I would definitely return the phone to Amazon and like EddyOS said try a store like CPW or Phones4U at least that way you know it's definitely a brand new untouched sim free phone.
You could try Amazon again but you might run the risk of getting yet another 'sim free-vodafone' HTC One.

That's bad news. Like someone said above, it's not that hard to get the phone to the way you want it. But that's not the point... Just return it.

I'd like to know, OP, was the phone packaged as brand new? As in, did it have the plastic wrapper around the phone, etc. in the box?

Be sure to leave a review to warn others of your experience.. They shouldn't get away with selling used/tampered phones as new.

Looking on Amazon it looks like they're 'out of stock' but other places are selling them...wonder if they had some dodgy stock and are going to replace them?

Hi,
Any idea on how to get rid of this?
I always get a message saying a System update is available - Software Update 1.29.161.11 (228.36 MB)
After downloading and opening it, I get a message saying:

As expected, I didn't get any solution on the HTC site. I haven't done any mods on my phone and it's still running an all-stock OS since I took it out of the box.
Here's my software info (my unit is the Europe version and I'm located in the Philippines, if that helps)
Android Version
4.1.2
HTC Sense Version
5.0
Software number
1.28.161.7
HTC SDK API level
5.12
Thanks in advance for the help :fingers-crossed:

that's strange.. the software number is correct.
and you haven't changed anything before? can you start your device into bootloader (power+volume down) and tell me what you see (does it show locked, unlocked or tampered?)? a screenshot of the bootloader would be helpful

wow, and you haven't modified anything? has this device been used before? your device is unlocked and even s-off!! :silly:
now it's clear why it didn't work. you'll have to relock your bootloader for an OTA.. the command would be "fastboot oem lock", but first you'll need to learn a bit about fastboot/adb stuff..
here's a guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2281365
Thanks! Hope this works (crossing fingers). By the way, what's this update anyway? I read somewhere that the 4.2.2 update for the HTC One came in two installments... one just a few MB in file size, then the other is around 400MB.

this update won't be 4.2.2, but i'm sure it'll follow directly after you've installed 1.29.xx.x

You've changed the CID. you have a Vodafone handset but the unbranded CID so it won't work. You need to change it back to VODAP001 and then see what happens
If you want the unbranded handset, seeing as you're S-OFF, then flash the 1.28.401.7 RUU and then you can get the OTAs to bring you up to 2.24.401.8

I already checked getvar version-main and it's 1.28.401.7...
Appreciate your help on this one. Thanks

Will it completely wipe my phone if i flash the RUU sir?
And if it's not compatible, will it brick my phone?
It will wipe everything so back up anything you want to keep first, and no it shouldn't brick the phone so long as you are fully charged
