people of XDAdevForum!
please answer one simple question? aren't You all trying to act more dramatic than there is actually necessary?
please correct me if I am wrong, but is there a majority of You regular gamers?
come on. let's be honest. this device is great. a real power house. period.
complaining about video? coreplayer is about to release special qtv version of their player ANY MINUTE now...
complaining about camera? nothing can be done. hardware is limited and camera is just an additional option anyway.
3D gaming? ... ... dunno what to say. real game loving freaks owns psp from day one. (or since last sale...)
wait till cp for kaiser, opera mobile 9 and windows mobile 6.1 will be released. then we will talk.
this device main purpose is communication and nothing can beat it at it.
to clarify- I am not a HTC agent or whatever.
I'm just simply getting tired of overreacting and all the hate against HTC. I never heard of people talking about taking a dump on nokia's lawn cuz of crappy gps in N95.
don't get me wrong- I would be over the moon with drivers sorted, but please... give those guys a break. they actually never reffered to kaiser as a gaming device like nokia does on it's n series. I've bought my Vario III because it is succesor to my previous Vario II. gps integrated, 3meg cam (not that bad in day light and soft from polaris) tilting keyboard and the list goes on...
Yes. I am happy.
... and I love this community, who once again is showing, that wm is great sys after all and it can be customised, just how we like it.
sorry for that wall of txt, but I had it comming.

Go and try to scroll in your windows folder with file explorer. Or use TomTom to show you the navigated route. Enjoy.
To be honest, it's not about gaming at all. Not about video playing at all. It's about scrolling in IE, in file explorer, smooth display in TomTom, in Camera. These operation on older devices are much more smoother comparing to this brick. Havent you seen the videos? Dear HTC agent?
The point is, that our devices seriously underperform compared to older device due to a lack of drivers (!). This means we've been sold devices that look as if they'd outperform older devices from the spec, but don't when it comes to reality - and it's not because the hardware is not there or anything, it's merely because a driver has not been delivered.
That's like you buy a cool computer advertised with a state-of-the-art DX10 Graphicscard which is deactivated due to a lack of drivers and all the rendering is done by the crappy onboard chip. Wouldn't like it would you?*
* Analogy is somwhat impaired as you can always just get drivers for the Card, but still....
Come on
I dont like paying $500 for a Tilt when the 8525 for half that works much better!! Get a clue!
Probably his first device. Doesn't know what to expect.
That said though I'm sure in a moment he'll reply & we'll learn that he is the mastermind behind windows mobile.
I would say something but I will respect the Title of this thread.

Now I'm begining to wonder what's going on here!!!!!!!
I have no scrolling issues in windows, or viewing route in Tomtom.
I also have very few videos that don't play snoothly either.
SO and this may be an important observation. Is there a proportion of devices out there that are not working properly (possible ROM or other software setup - maybe even a hardware problem) and that others DO NOT show these problems.
On mine I simply cannot see the slowness others report. Mine is lag free and resposive. I saw some posts about the screen rotate times being slow, but mine is virtually instant.
Maybe this is what we should establish. Is it only some devices that are having problems.Compared to my 8525 my speeds are fantastic.
I notice that this odd mixture of some folks saying they have excellent speed and smooth loading and performance compared to others who seem to find the opposite - is apparent on several other PDA sites too.
Mike
EDIT: Just saw the post below. Again I have not noticed the camera being slow (except when really dark). Taking videos I dont do much of but let's say compared to TyTn it is about the same.
I will say I had a slow scroll in PIE but that was solved with the installation of the older PIE dll.
Happy? No!
I don't watch movies or play graphics intensive games. However I do use my phone as a PDA and take pictures and small videos and suck. Try scrolling anything, try taking a picture or small video of your kids. Then come back and tell me how happy you are.
Seems that either you don't actually have a Kaiser or you only use it as a phone.
Lately the camera performance on the Kaiser is really frustrating. It's almost unusable in low'ish light. With video or stills. Sure it's been like this the whole time but lately I've really been frustrated. I would like to use the camera.
To all the people who say a camera on a phone is not important I say go back in your cave. It's 2008 BTW and technology is surpassing you, get out of the way.
Sorry I'm done. Let's not trash this thread since it's call "Happy User Thread". There are alot of other threads we can do that in. As much as it's going to urk us to know that non power users will be posting in this thread oblivious to what is possible.

For all I know it may be 80% of users who have these problems. I don't in any major way or anything that by changing settings has not been fixed. I'm not trying to dismiss the issues you and possibly many others have, but it may have a bearing on the causes. Perhaps there are hardware flaws for which no amount of ROM changing will solve matters.

Is there some sort of benchmark that we could all run to see if there is something that is only affecting certain units?
I bought my TYTN II in Australia about 3 months ago and the screen redraws are abysmal, the camera is useless in anything less than perfect light. From what I have read every TYTN II is the same, depending on what your expectation is I suppose.

Me too Mike, my experience seems to follow yours. I love my little Kaiser, its a great little device, does all I ask of it, and I'm really pleased with the over all package.
And before others jump in and propose I'm a novice too, my first PDA phone was a Nokia 9000 Communicator, bought years ago. Back then, mods weren't flashing ROM's, or installing CAB's, it was done through programming, and DOS (remember that?) level commands. Or to put it another way, imagine that every tweak etc on the Kaiser had to be done via regedit. So novice, no. Happy user, yes.
I wonder if there are just some units out there that are badly made? Maybe HTC has more 'Friday' phones than most...
c'mon now, what are you talking about The tilt is about a half a step backwards from the 8525. Do the comparisons yourself, from playing movie files, video recording, picture taking in limited lighting, and the graphical redrawing of the ui itself! there's no way in hell should my ipaq Hw6515 out perform the tilt in any of these aspects! The tilt is suppose to be an upgrade from the 8525, but from the performance of it, it's not!
Yesterday I got my NC, I am living in France so have to order it from amazon, takes about 5 days.
1st thing I notice it is much heavier than my sony PRS600, one hand holding is tough for me, for some reasons I need all my handheld dev to be light weight as much as possible, NC is however acceptable.
Screen is great, this is the main reason I pick it, NC doesn't disappoint me, and touch is very sensitive and accurate.
hardware, this isn't much to say, for that price I guess it's a great deal. The issues are buttons and SD slot, no classic android hardware buttons really troubles me after rooting, and which genius come out with that SD slot design?
OS, sort of sucks, don't know it's the 2.1's problem or what, everything is a bit slow and lag, I hope 2.2 will fix them abit like your guys said, I really do.
software: as a ereader it's original softwares work fine, reading is good, pdf is a bit lag, video play back is good, but 720p video can only play smoothy in MP4 format, only problem is my comic books don't works on NC.I guess I need find a good app for this.
So last night I root the NC, using the auto nooter it wasn't hard at all, but there is a strange bug, after I reboot the NC, the Youtube stop working, can't even run it. I do remeber it worked fine just after rooting.
Another thing is some app on my NC have no sounds, sometime they works fine after a reboot, but after a while they always stop making any sounds, the OS sounds are still there, only not works in apps.
Over all I think I am happy with the new toy, gona buy one for my mom too, just wait for I fix the sounds and install Plants vs Zombies for her
Thx for reading this, and sorry for my english.
No android hardware buttons:
- There is an app posted in the nook dev subforum called SoftKeys - works great. It overlays the buttons on the screen.
No comic viewer:
- There's a couple. Search for ACV (Droid Comic Viewer)
Youtube not working:
- Uninstall, then reinstall. Easiest if you have ASTRO file manager or something similar
Audio issues:
- Dunno, haven't encountered the ones you mentioned, so far.
Grats on your new toy!
Where are you getting plants vs zombies? I just looked in the market and its not there. If someone has ripped it from the ipad please post it here I would love to have that game
Just purchased 1 for my wife 2 nights ago. I ended up playing with it too much that she suggested that I go ahead and buy one for myself, so I did. Planning to root it shortly.
I was really looking to get a galaxy tab but after playing with the nook I was pretty satisfied. I just could not justify spending another $300 or so for the tab, considering CES is also around the corner and new products will probably be unveiled. Looking to get a new phone with the $300 I saved. I am using an HD2 on Android at the moment and will wait till after the new year.
The Nook will be used mainly for reading, some surfing, maybe a few movies. Overall, I am happy with the purchase.

my friend use a HTC desire HD, he gives me that game, don't test it myself, cuz NC is my 1st android dev, I wana install it after all the things are done, besides u need 2.2 OS to run it, it's a port from PC.
Maybe its me but I like the SD card slot. I mean its without a doubt not that easy to put it in and take it out but atleast its better than it being completely in the machine and unable to extract if it doesnt eject
as far as youtube... I think its easier using zeam but thats just me XD
hold it
move it to the trash icon
wait for it to say "uninstall"
uninstall
adb over the apk
enjoy
update: I found the sound is off every time NC goes to sleep mode, when it turns on again, show no sounds at all.

I have the same exact problem. I don't think it's an issue with all of them just some. Does this mean it's a hardware problem?
So I just downloaded and tested this app called MultiTouch and realize that our Nook Color just has 2 touch points instead of an Apple IPad, which has 10 touch points. If you do not know what touch points are, it's the number of fingers you can register on a multi-touch device all at one time. For 2 touch point, the Nook Color can only detect 2 fingers at once on it's screen. Well my question here is, is there going to be a way later on to modify the hardware/software to allow more than 2 touch points? Or are we stuck with 2 touch points forever because of Nook Color hardware limitations?
what do you need more than 2 touch points for? I am honestly curious.
For 250 a piece this tablet isn't going to survive for too long. At least among us rooters.

Anyway, I see that once you touch more than 2 points it blanks out all the touch..
I discovered that when using an emulator and needing the third touch point..

The iPad is designed for finger typing like a full QWERTY keyboard. The Nook Color is not. So really any more than two points is not necessary or even usable on this device.

Not necessarily true. My Droid Incredible, up until about two weeks, ago, at least that's when I saw it it on the forums, only had two point multi touch. It now has 10 point multitouch thanks to a custom kernel. I think it has more to do with the kernel than the actual digitizer, or whatever capacitive screens use to detect touches. it would make sense that since the nook can detect a point anywhere on the screen that software could be written in the form on a custom kernel to detect more than one at once. Of course this is all pure speculation about the nook as I know pretty much nothing about capacitive screen technology. If anyone else can shed some light or reeducate me, fell free.

According to that post, it's a software limitation and not hardware. Does anyone know if it could be added or does no one care? I love my $250 tablet and the only thing that sucks is the 2 point touch. Like the OP said, after two fingers it just blanks the touch to nothing. Seems like even that could stand some work. The NC seems to freak out if you put too many fingers on it. I've been annoyed with this for a long time.

I have to say, my experience so far with getting my NC up and running with CM7 has been very positive so far. I'm running it from the SD and OC @ 1.1ghz. Just a great experience all around. I'm still considering a Xoom somewhere down the road but no rush now.
I wasn't going to buy it as I had a Kindle but I have to say, this really has so much more potential, I just couldn't say no.
Anyways, just wanted to pass along my positive experience and look forward to learning a bunch more from all the smart people around here.
I'm gonna add a question here as I don't want to make another thread.
One thing I'm slightly frustrated with, and really it's very minor, I have some difficulty with swiping through menus and accidentally selecting whatever happens to be at the location I start my swipe.
For example: When I'm scrolling through a web page, I'll press somewhere close to the bottom and drag up to scroll down the page. For some reason, this typically will launch a link if that happens to be around where my finger touches the screen initially. Or if I'm in 'Settings' and scrolling through the screen to go further down, this usually opens a misc option or checks/unchecks a box, etc. I don't know what else to do but is there a setting or something that will stall the OS from reacting so quickly?
If I click and hold, then drag, it seems to work ok. But this is something that's not really natural to me. I'll say now that I've used an iPhone and iPad and never had this type of quirky/touchy response. Is it just me?
Yea BN missed the boat. They could if given it full aosp android and probbley spent less software development money and charged more money.

I picked up an anti-glare screen protector on Amazon.com, but I can't remember which one it was. I bought it mainly to just protect the screen from scratches, but it really cuts the glare and doesn't show fingerprints as easily as the bare screen.
It doesn't degrade image quality at all, although I bumped up the screen's brightness just a hair to compensate.

IDK, the stock interface is accessible for the computer-illiterate and the hardware configuration is equally accessible for all levels of power-users. I pretty much forgive all shortcomings in the stock OS because B&N made no effort to lock me into using it, aside from withholding the magazine and kids book functionality in their Android Market app.
Im not new to the android world been around since g1 days. Any important info I should know about this thing? What are some of the more refined roms and kernel based on user experience?
No gps, buggy and messed up bluetooth, no mic, buggy/unsupported accelerometer, wifi connection issues on stock, two of biggest problems on CMG7 is sleep of death(SOD) - basically occasionally can't wake up device and need to hold power down as if doing a hard power off, and occasion random freezes, soft keys, resolution issues on stock...a good place to start would be to look at nook color workarounds sticky.
That will tell you some major issues that people are facing -> and they aren't minor. (in regards to rooted stock).
SD card specific in regards to loading off of OS, needs SANDISK branded class 2/4, no others to be safe.
Otherwise, it's a great tablet.
Don't need to worry about bricking, since it loads off SD first, a bootable SD card with clockworkmod recovery will always allow you to salvage your nook.
Dual boot is an option. If you do this, there's almost no reason to root the stock.
Oh, and I probably don't need to say the positives. If you want those, let me know!

OK.. wow... gotta jump on this one
No gps - How is this an issue? It is not advertised with one....
buggy and messed up bluetooth - BUggy and messed up? The ONLY issue BT has is range; it could be stronger. But buggy? Nope. It works great with bluetooth GPS devices, and BT headsets. Also keep in mind, that the BT had to be activated by our kernel masters.. it wasn't even on in stock.
no mic - again; not an issue since it is not advertised with one.
buggy/unsupported accelerometer - This is just flat out wrong. There is nothing wrong with the accelerometer; it works perfect in games and in the OS.
wifi connection issues on stock - The few wifi issues people seem to have tend to be more related to specific routers; as it is, the problems aren't that common.
two of biggest problems on CMG7 is sleep of death(SOD) - SOD is all but gone; the fix has been in CM7 for some time.
occasion random freezes, soft keys, resolution issues on stock - Huh? "Resolution issues"? What issues? For the matter, what issue with soft keys? And if you are having freezes, it means you need to back off your overclock... nothing more.

The accelerometer doesn't work with screebl, spirit level, and a few other programs. Perhaps not fully supported is what I should say? Obviously, this platform isn't considered standard and thusly isn't fully supported nor does it have a imei number and ultimately has a gimped marketplace.
Have you even read the nook color stock rom workaround thread?
I guess I should called it pixel density issues as opposed "resolution".
I'm addressing the nook's limitations compared to other "standard" issue tablets.
I get SOD once a day on average and a random freeze once or twice a day.
It's easy to sing the praises of the Nook Color, but again, I think it's a matter of limitations that people need to know about before diving in.
I still think it's the best 7 inch form factor tablet at this time.
Thanks guys! keep it coming.
I'm a new owner of a nook, here are my thoughts.
Just use cm7 or phiremod, rooted stock is not worth it.
I have experienced sod once so far, and that was with the latest cm7. Not a huge deal, but it's worth mentioning.
It will take a while for you to get your nook fully customized to your liking, I've had mine for 6 days and I'm just about getting there.
Install chainfire 3d, it will improve graphics in some games (notably, fruit ninja)
I have not had a problem with wifi. I have not tested Bluetooth.

That first response made it sound as if the nook Color has multiple problems. I have CM7 on sdcard and it works great. I have not overclocked (haven't felt the need to). If I take out the sdcard then I have a stock rooted Nook. I am extremely happy with both. I use it as an ereader and sometimes play games. I take it on trips instead of dragging a laptop and it has worked very nicely for browsing and email. My phone can produce a wifi signal when needed. I love the 7" screen. Nook fits in my purse. I highly recommend it.
these comments are great! I currently use chainfire on my incredible with miui and it works great along with autokiller. The thing flies, and I would be using the two on the nook as well. I know what sleep of death is, I experienced it with a kernel on my captivate when I had it. As far as quality with the hardware, how does it compare to other competitors?

Aw yeah my fellow miui inc user! And I have not owned any other tablet, but for the price (I suggest getting one from ebay or craigslist), it simply can not be beat. For ~$180, the build can not be beat. It is sturdy, feels nice in your hands and the screen has a nice resolution to it. Really though, this is, hands down the best tablet for the price.

I know that others also posted about this already, but I also feel a need to respond.
1. If you purchase a Nook Color based on the features/specs that B&N advertise, one wouldn't expect those features.
2. The ability to run another OS other than stock and have it run well for everything but the "unofficial" hardware features or lack thereof is really cool!
3. Each nightly release seems to really be working to resolve (or have resolved already) a large number of those issues.
I suspect by the time 7.1 stable is released you'll see a pretty solid setup.
As for the microSD issue. That is unfortuante, but it's not a problem of the Nook so much as it is the nature of the SD design. Faster SD cards like class 10 are really designed to peak the performance for sequential writes/reads. Cameras and other fixed function media devices benefit from loading/saving pictures or video to those SDs. For an OS like CM7, you really need decent random read/write performance, so the earlier designs seem to do this better.
I'd made the mistake of reading about this news threads and purchased an SD card without researching here first. That was my fault. After reading up and purchasing another SD from SanDisk, it's been solid.
As to the lack of GPS, it's interesting how well bluetooth GPS modules are working for many. Granted they keep them close due to the limitations, but it can be worked around. As for Skype, I'm seeing some pairing bluetooth headsets and getting voice goodness, again with a range limitation.

+1 That is a great idea. I suspect however, with the fast pace of nightlies development, that many are waiting to see if they are resolved soon. But creating a sticky and then re-editing as the status changes would be a great idea.

I don't see any reason to run rooted stock, but there are many workarounds for those problems.
The only issues I have with cm7 is sod and random freeze, bt does not connect to two of my plantronic headsets, the accelerometer is hit or miss, pending the app.
Its better than my droidx in.regard to speed and performance.
I didn't read the thread but I have these words to say: Get... the... Nook... Color!
Unless you have some reason that you need another tablet, this is the one to get if you're looking for a premium tablet for a sub-premium price.
It's a great device. If you can pick one up factory Refurb for 200 bucks or less - I say jump on it - and don't look back. Great screen - and nice performance for a tablet.
If you are fine spending 400 bucks - save up your pennies and buy a dual core - but I don't know if it's worth twice the price. I almost went with one of the new 10" Tegra 2 tablets - but the price of a first tablet that I didn't know if / how I'd use it kept me dragging.
I'm running CM7 - Every couple of days - I'll get a random freeze - or not waking up from sleep - but it's really no big deal. Just hold down the N and Power button - and it boots right up and works like new again. It's something I notice when it happens - but IMHO - really doesn't take anything from the device itself.
Screen is awesome. Best bang for the buck - if you don't need a camera or GPS. And it fits in my pocket when I need it to.
I'm a noob so figure I chime in on this debate.. I picked up a NC 2 weeks ago and it's been great so far -- I sold my iPad after a week of owning it.
I don't care for GPS since I have a Garmin -- I can't imagine myself sticking a 10" (or in this case 7") on my dashboard as I may get pulled over by the cops. I'm sure there's a law that forbids obstructing a drivers vision.
Wifi works fine -- as above said, it's probably the router. I have a Netgear 3700 and I get reception in the park across the street -- 100m away.
I haven't experienced the SOD issue (yet, and I hope I never will).
I don't have bluetooth to try it and I haven't had a need for a mic. Camera quality on any tablet is quite poor so I'd never use it to take pictures or record videos -- again, how likely are you to pull out a 7" or 10" tablet to take pictures?
That said, here's why I think it's great.
1. I was perfectly fine running BN's software -- it has built in email client and flash-enabled web browser. I can do 90% of what I'd use a tablet for with just those 2 things
2. I was perfectly fine running CM7 off an SD card -- you can keep the BN software intact if you choose to go back.
3. To truly bring out its power, I wrote CM7 into the internal memory. I tell you, it's a lot better since I had a crappy microSD card.
Now, I can do things like Netflix, Pandora, TuneIn from anywhere -- works great the next time I have to travel. Moboplayer plays any movie files I've thrown at it. You can connect the Nook to your computer and it transfers files via USB -- I had to jailbreak and then install SSH on the iPad to get this feature. Since it's connected to my Google account, when I installed to the internal memory, it picked up everything I did on the SD card and automatically installed everything again. Also, it's super light and thin since it doesn't have all those things I don't need -- GPS, camera, etc..
Last and above all, tremendous community support here.
Very happy with my Nook Color.
I don't understand what the debate is. Now, I have to be defensive about this because this is obviously all coming from my post.
I agree with just about what everyone says here, but limitations are...just that limitations.
Whether or not they pertain to you or are relevent to you, really doesn't matter.
How you value, gps, mic, bt, accelerometer is really a personal thing...
Again, I was merely pointing out several issues that are particular to a nook vs specifically galaxy(since that is really the only other competing 7 inch table of somewhat equal caliber).
The wifi issue has a workaround posted in the "workaround sticky". I imagine it could be just a router issue, however it appears that the workaround is a apk with varyable results which would point away from a pure router problem.
I have a nook color because I don't care about gps, bt, mic, etc.
I continue to use a nook color in cm7 on emmc because I don't have a major issue with a couple of random freezes a day or SOD once a day. I use the tablet at work at a hospital as a doc. It's great in a white labcoat. Fits perfectly in the pocket, access to pdf's, net, epocrates, and a whole host of medical software.
It's great for what I use it for. It's why I have it.
Again, the limitations of the device still do exist and may impact other peoples decision to buy it.
I'm not going to be a Nook Color Fanboy and paint the sky blue. There is some real issues that people should know and feel comfortable about prior to purchasing this piece of equipment. It's not for everyone.
once again these are the posts I was looking for! thanks again, and if anyone feels the need to add anything else, feel free.
Currently I have a nook color with CM7 on the emmc, but 2 days to return the nook, I've been constantly wondering if the HTC flyer or the transformer would be better, true the nook has the best price of them all, but the flyer's specs could do more, and the transformers screen is pretty amazing, but being able to fit the nook and my phone in my pocket at the same time is absolutely amazing, however the fact that my phone plays games faster then my tablet hurts as the small screen gives me eyestrain and I'm close to needing glasses as it is, sorry to heap this all over you guys but I can't find a good answer anywhere else,
Thanks in advance.

The 7.1RC1 seems to improve speed a bit. I'd try that out and see if that makes your worries vanish.
If you need a 7 inch tablet and have budgetary constraints, then for the money, I'd stay with the nook color, since it also has the best screens of all the 7 inchers anyways. To be honest, I never even considered a flyer as a 7 inch tablet to be used...perhaps cause of it's cost.
Otherwise, the flyer would be okay, but it's a bit too expensive in my opinion.
Or you can wait for the viewsonic 7.x or an update on the galaxy (if they do for 7 inches).
A lot of stuff coming our way shortly.

There are a couple of 7" Tegra 2 tablets coming out later this year - that should start around $349.00 for the Acer. They'll be Honeycomb 3.2 ( which scales for the 7" screens ) - which is why I think they're not out yet. If the extra performance is needed - and you can swing the extra cash - you could wait for those.
I think the post taht summed it up the best - was the one that - this tablet has it's limitations ( as do all tablets - including the Ipad 2) and you should do your homework and know what you're buying.
For me - this was my learner tablet - and I wanted a tinker friendly device - that would be usable - and it's been good at that for me. I could see room to upgrade in areas < more volume for speakers / dual core for more power efficiency & speed to run more widgets and have battery last longer - larger screen -- not sure on that one - with tradeoffs of portability > but overall - it suits my needs now. I'm hoping it can keep me happy til the quad cores are out in the market and bugs worked out - and drop in prices a bit.
