Wouldn't it seem possible to do that? Yeah I know it isn't out yet but the ChromeCast Device looks like a USB drive but instead has a HDMI output.

It's not a usb device. It processes information not just stores it. Not to mention built in wi-fi.

why?
the point of ChromeCast is to take input(from your phone, eg a youtube URL), load it and output it via HDMI
what would your USB drive do? take input, load it, output and dump into a flat file?
your typical USB drive has no processor either, or ram...
Can you port the receiver to the Raspberry Pi? That would be rad.

The Chromecast is just a fancy receiver and transmitter. The information for what you are streaming on your phone is sent to Chromecast. Chromecast then pulls that data from the internet and outputs to a TV.

Possibly, but the Pi would need a lot of parts, that would cost you more than 35 bucks. The Chromecast has a HDMI connection, 2GB flash memory (for Chrome OS), 512 MB RAM, and a WiFi chip.

It gets better. For now, the only recieving hardware you can use is the Chromecast dongle, so no open reception standard quite yet.

I think creating an android app emulating the chromecast and run it on a android tv stick is more possible.
Dude this idea will totally work all you have to do is get a thumb drive with an antenna in it, like this one.

Hello my fellow XDAers!
I have a blueray player that has an ethernet port. My question is besides using a hardwire. What is the simplest way to connect it to my wireless router?
I thought of several, like a ehternet bridge to my laptop, a wireless ehernet bridge, and the adapter that runs internet threw the powerwires.
Which way is the easiest, lasting and permenent solution (besides hardwire).?
Thanks!

They're all usable and good solutions, but I'd personally go for going through power lines. I don't have it myself but plan to get it very soon. A friend has it and he strongly recommends it. He gets speeds round his whole house that wifi simply could not compete with.

Its like an extension box
You plug it into a socket, and it converts the socket to a socket + Ethernet port
So for e.g.
You plug in one where you place your router, and connect it by a cable
Next, near your TV/DVD player, you connect another, and then connect the cable
And then just you need to do so more setup, cant remember now, a bit sleepy, will post tomorrow
From my fingers to your eyez
It sounds like lies, but it's true!
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/power-network.htm
My mate picked up 2 for a fiver in a charity shop, so he has one in a socket near his router and then can move the other one round the house as required.
I've been advised that there are 2 different types - 85Mbps and 200Mbps. As long as you get the same type then you can mix and match makes, but he got a real bargain. The cheapest I can find on ebay is £32 for 2 200Mbps ones. If you're not too fussed about the bandwidth then you can get them cheaper.

The range is supposed to degrade anything over 300m, so that's quite a lot. Yes, obviously security would be an issue if the communication wasn't encrypted, but it is. You can set the encryption keys yourself, so it's down to you if it's not secure.

That's right, the technology to intelligently modulate a signal over existing power lines has been around since the 1960's (if not longer).
So I'm hoping people with a little more knowledge than me in PCs would help me figure out this issue I have at the moment with my computer.
Is there any way to block an app/program from detecting your external display? In other words, still use my Vizio as a monitor, yet fool my computer to think it's my laptop's actual monitor?
The reason I'm trying to figure this out is so I can use the Optimum for Laptop app. It only runs on laptops and will not work if it detects that you're using an external display. I have no choice at the moment to use one, since the screen on my Dell Inspiron is shattered. Any tips/advice is appreciated
Try mirroring your display instead of just choosing the external as your main display. Therefore you have both the display on the laptop and on the external screen. If you choose the external as your main it cuts off the feed to the laptops screen. You will probably have to leave the lid open or go into your power settings and
choose do nothing when you close the lid. Hope this helps.

Yeah I say mirror the display as well. If that works, just toss a black shirt over your laptop screen so the light doesn't leak through.
I tried that, but then it would not stream the channel. Like it knows.....
Thanks for replying though. I appreciate it.
try enabling only the external monitor (if you haven't already) using your video card/driver software. i know this is possible in software like catalyst control center and others.
So here's what happens now. The warning about me using the external display doesn't pop up anymore when I change the display to clone on both monitors. But the channels will not load, unless I unplug the VGA to my laptop. Then the channel will start playing. I'm trying to figure out any way to still use my monitor but at the same time my laptop doesn't detect it.
I have the same exact question as the OP.
Have you found another solution to this? If I clone my display, the max resolution to my monitor is much less than I want it to be (monitor is capable of 1920 x 1080).
Thanks.
I have the same issue has there been any progress?

do i need to be a member to reply to this? (I guess so lol) Optimum STILL doesn't support external display of their optimum for laptop, or thru the optimum app. It's RIDICULOUS! I subscribe to the basic tv but have no cable boxes since I only subscribed to lower my entire bill as I got a promotion for a year. I watch tv now and again on my iphone 6 or on my rca 10" tablet. I have antenna and get all the major channels but when it's really crappy weather out I will watch on tablet or phone. Would be nice if I can cast the picture to my 40" tv instead of watching on my iphone 6. Now that Altice has bought Optimum and doubled our speeds maybe they'll support external display. (But I doubt it....)
So I recently bought the Samsung Multi-Media dock.
I've seen a few reviews and un-boxing's but can't seem to find any videos on people showing the full capabilities.
I also noticed, that when everything was plugged in, the dock wouldn't read any storage devices (pendrives and HDD). Would anyone know the problem? or what I have to do.
Thanks in advanced.
Also if anyone knows of good videos showing what it can do etc.. or record what it can do

You can probably call up samsung and send them the serial number to make sure it's real or not.
If it's the real one, I keep reading all over the forums that the format of the hdd/pen drives might be the issue. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find them. This was usually when people were buying the 64GBs cards and had to reformat them to get them to work. I'm assuming it might be a similar issue.

Tv reports 1080/30p. Using Maxthon browser in full screen mode and set for smallest letters is a pleasure using on bigger screen. Most (all?) applications are not optimized to utilize higher resolution output and simply mirror phone screen. Netflix app has a problem with smart dock. When video is played in full screen mode - hdmi is formated 4:3 instead 16:9. Other video apps output in correct ratio.

According to the article, it is a usb drive with either 16 or 32 gb.
Here is another one that is similar to the kickstarter one, but it also has the standard usb connector on one end and the housing slides to expose the micro usb connector on the other end. I like how the micro sd card slides into the usb connector.

I've been trying this out for a few days. At first I had a couple issues with the chromecast rebooting every few minutes, but after doing a factory rest it seems fine now. I've got it hooked up to an old stereo system (and monitor) replacing an Airport Express I used to stream from my Ipod. Got to say I like the chromecast a lot better, doesn't have as many features but was much easier to set up and does what I want (Google Play Music and Youtube) perfectly.

I've got it hooked up to an old stereo system (and monitor) replacing an Airport Express I used to stream from my Ipod. Got to say I like the chromecast a lot better, doesn't have as many features but was much easier to set up and does what I want (Google Play Music and Youtube) perfectly.

It should work well. I got an HDMI to composite converter off of Amazon and Chromecast works fine

can you paste a link to the converter you bought? thanks
I can't link yet (under 10 posts) but you can search amazon for:
ViewHD Universal HDMI to Composite / AV Video Converter, Support PAL / NTSC Standard TVs
Just make sure you have a 5V 1A usb charger for it to work properly. I used an apple wall usb charger.

I didn't see anything on Amazon for cheaper than $30 that got good reviews
How's the quality on those adapters?
Does it really need a Digital to analog converter?
I think it's time for a new TV.
I have one converter than I am willing to sell. I've bought it a month ago on Amazon : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0080KN18K/ref=oh_details_o09_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
because the stupid rental unit where I am currently on vacation still has an old TV. I've only used it for this short amount of time, because I needed to connect my Logitech Revue. I've also connected the Chromecast both through the Revue and directly to the converter. It's perfectly working , you can see some pictures here
