To flash CM10.1 or remain with Sense 5 ROM - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys.
I've been using sense 5 for a while now on my HTC One.
However I used cm10.1 on my nexus 4 and it was a pleasant experience.
I have no idea if it's worth the switch from stock sense 5 Roms to CyanogenMod Rom on the HTC One.
Did you replace your sense 5 Rom with a CM Rom?
Why did you switch and is it of any great benefit?
Thanks.

To be frank its personal choice.
but there are few drawbacks of installing cm on this device. u will lose zoe , camera quality is a BIT lower, Bluetooth issues.
and off-course , you will lose awesome blinkfeed
but disregarding all those, its still a good daily driver.
and more-over, sense offers a much more professional and clean ui. you might start to like it soon.

I switched over to the Google Edition for a week and it was good. Buy for some reason, Sense just fits the One so nicely that I felt the phone was incomplete without it. And not just the feel, but Sense ROMs are actually tweaked and optimized towards the hardware, so theres an interrelationship too. I've come to appreciate Sense 5 due to this.
Just my two cents. :]

No need for 4.2

Kind of funny but I've been thinking about this. 4.2 is almost an update designed to make bare bones aosp android better, and does almost nothing for a phone with a manufacturer skin. 4.1 would be great on this phone with project butter, better notifications, and Google now, but here's the rundown on 4.2 features:
Better camera app: sense 3.6 already has a nicer one than aosp. No photosphere but its kinda of a gimmick "look what my phone can do" feature anyway. The stock camera app has always sucked until 4.2 and the update finally brings it up to par with custom ui's, but does nothing for us.
Improved lockscreen with widget support : sense pretty much has the best lockscreen with shortcut support and notification widgets that appear through sense apps. Custom widget support would be nice but aosp still doesn't have shortcut support.
Gesture typing: yep, we got it on the stock "touch input" keyboard. next
Quick settings : yep sense has that too
Tv out support : while we don't have miracast support, about every htc device post evo 4G has either an hdmi port or mhl support. I'm sure the vivid is no different, but correct me if I'm wrong.
Better alarm clock app : the aosp alarm clock app has always been an after thought until 4.2,however ui's like sense and touchwiz have always had really nice alarm clock apps and the 4.2 app really just brings stock aosp up to par with the ui's
User profiles: this feature is tablet only and disabled on the phones so the vivid wouldn't get it anyway.
I think that's about it. So there you have it! I really kind of believe 4.2 is catered to nexus devices, and I honestly could see a lot of manufacturers passing on this as if they do update, then it'll be little more than a version number change. If you're in the market for a non nexus phone and it has 4.1, then your already up to date.
Just something I thought about. Thoughts?

And before anyone calls me out, I got a nexus 7, so I use 4.2 on a daily basis, so I'm not just posting on stuff I've read lol.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
I have a nexus 7 also and personally I'd like to see 4.2 on the vivid because I HATE sense.... Didn't realize how much I didn't like it until I played with pure android. But I'm guessing that if we can't get CM10 to work on this phone, there'd be no reason to worry about 4.2 or not!

Yeah I'm not to keen on sense either, thought it was awesome until I got a phone with it and had to use it every day. If by some Longshot we get jellybean, I hope it comes with Sense 4+ and not the underwhelming sense 3.6 that's on this phone now. From what I've seen sense 4 is world's ahead of what we have.
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using Tapatalk 2
Once cm10 is completed bring 4.2 will be easy as there isn't much difference between 4.1.2 and 4.3 when it comes to making things work
Anyways I love the 4.2 camera...and I think I read others here on the vivid are able to use it on ICS....

Well I was nearly speaking from the perspective of stock, of course I'd want it for cm, but cm doesn't quite have 4.2 ready yet anyway. I hope you can pull it off, I might keep this thing if I can actually get away from using sense or "desensitized" roms.
Problem is with the development we've had, nothing really seems done. I'm sure there is some way to crack the ril issues, so kudos for not giving up. I know I've complained alot but really the phone is no different on stock than any other phone, it's just development hasn't been so great as the best developers keep giving up on the phone in favor of a galaxy s3 or something else.
From a stock standpoint this is better than my captivate I had before, but I would of hated the captivate if I had to be at the mercy of at&t and Samsung for updates which is where we're at with this phone currently. So best of luck to ya hope you can finally solve the dreaded ril issue!

Lol I feel the same...but since I have the phone and at least somewhat knowledge on this stuff I figured I might as well try my best...that being said I hate HTC and will never get another one...this vivid ruined it for me. Like you say, stock wise this phone is great...but that's it. Once you go into the world of custom ROMs this phone takes a major dive to nowhere :/
And honestly...ialthough I will keep trying I don't think I'll personally ever figure out the ril/mic issue...but since we got h8rift now I think we may stand a fighting chance...he is a real dev, I'm just a contributor...hence our titles

Yeah they can make some beautiful looking phones with excellent build quality but sense hasn't aged well and every post sensation device has been a lot less developer friendly. I almost think they feel insulted that anyone wouldn't want to use sense and feel like their phones are perfect already.
But the one x, one x+, and DROID DNA are all gorgeous looking. Hell really so is our phone. Make no mistake their phones are awesome its just the software that blows.

Vanilla Android on HTC One

Hi all, is this possible yet? I never had the intention of using Sense UI, i purchased the phone with the intension of flashing stock android. Am i a little early to the party?
thanks!
I flashed cm10.1 today to check it out, and it works, although HTC sense is much faster and smoother. In fact the One is faster and smoother than the Nexus 4. I'd forgotten how ugly and featureless stock android was.
In answer to your question, CM is in alpha but is Ok with some bugs.

I wouldn't say ugly and featureless. Just minimal and reliable IMO. The current Sense is the only skin I have ever liked. I just put up with previous ones and put up with stock Android before ICS.
There are a few ROMs available in the original Android development forum. Bunch of stuff doesn't work yet though. I didn't intend to use sense either but it's actually smooth, nice and functional. I may even stay on it when there's a stable AOSP ROM. And I LOVE AOSP. It's so PRETTY. But this sense is actually really nice.

Thanks for the replies.
I really haven't given Sense5 even a try yet, but i really would prefer just to stick with vanilla.
So a custom ROM especially for vanilla would have to be made?

Confused why?

If the HTC One comes with Sense 5 and runs like a beast why would someone want to use aosp? It seems like you lose a lot of features in the switch. Things are broken as well. I've never come across an aosp Rom that was 100% working on any device I've owned. There always had been troubleshooting I've needed to do, a lot of it. Not trying to upset anyone, just curious about the rationale. I understand getting some features that you can't with Sense but that thought process is vice versa, or can go both ways. Personal preference I guess. Any thoughts, comments? What would I be able to do with aosp that I cannot with Sense? Looking forward to a healthy and productive discussion.

Aosp eventually ran 100% on the Evo 4G and I never looked back.
I always found myself sticking to aosp once 4G was working on the 3D as well and never really missed the 3D feature much. But I see your point. Right now, with how well Sense 5 seems to run and what's currently broke, I can't understand wanting it... Right NOW. But once most things are functioning I can see it getting popular.
I won't though... I dig Zoe. Lol.

I remember gingerbread running pretty nicely on my OG Evo as well. I do A LOT of different things on my phone (as I'm sure most of us do ), but there would always be something I could find. Guess it's just me being nitpicky lol. Didn't you release a Rom or 2 over there?
I love this newest version of sense, miss some of the old sense widgets though. The zoe feature is top notch, and the camera pics are better then any mobile phone camera I've ever used. And I also have to admit, I'm in love with Blinkfeed. Everything right on the homescreen that I want to read, and some things I didn't, but found out that I did lol. All around I think it's a great os. I'm curious to try out some aosp on the One but I don't know if I'm willing to give up those features. I'm also intimidated about the internal data moving around between aosp and sense, and having to manually move it around. That's why to me right now it's not worth the change. Well have to see what's in store for the future.

I know on my evo shift aosp ran flawless and fast as all getout.... I suppose the benefits on a device this fast would simply be the fact that its the latest android release 4.2.2 as opposed to whatever android version sense is (currently 4.1.2). Honestly for the enrichment that sense brings I don't see it getting nearly as popular on the one unless klp brings some killer features. Until the next iteration of sense comes out and we get that update....
I'm with ya OP I just don't understand the reasoning. But some people are just purists I suppose and want stock Android for some reason. I've personally always thought of AOSP was kind of moving and meh.

I just finished my OG Evo run with Decks Reloaded and everything was great but, it will be awhile b4 I give up this version of Sense. I'm not as jazzed about BF but, I do love the camera and its features and the overall lightness of it these days. I originally learned about rooting due to lack of space on the OG Evo but, those days are long gone!!

Right..I was a junkie for all the things you could when I first learned about rooting, I was reading forums ALL the time!!!
Another thing to add is that Sense 5 is much more transparent to Android. You see a lot more of AOSP in the new version of Sense, like the notification menu, some of the text editing, etc. Personally, I like Sense over AOSP because AOSP to me seems just too basic. And this is a good in between to where I've actually been happy with it. Sense 3 and 4 were just way too in your face, but I liked it because it was Sense. I now see it more because I have the One. At this point, if HTC stays with it's values on Sense 5, and continues to innovate, more people will likely stay.

That's because all AOSP ROMs are a hack. I'm sure it will be as fully functional and stable as any OEM Sense ROM.
The CM Project has some of it's own code. But they don't have access to firmware and they need to play together. HTC and Carriers have access to everything.
People always think open source means Open everything. It's almost always a Hybrid with some propriety pieces that are not released and the "public" code is always lagging in what's released.
Some things done on AOSP are reverse engineered when they don't have source for something (or the latest source).
I've yet to see a AOSP ROM CM have a FULLY functional GPS. Nor have the ## codes ever worked which I find really useful.
By the time they (Sprint HTC CDMA Android phones) are Officially Supported (if at all) it's over a year and the next generation is released.
Unofficial AOSP (CM) is always behind.
To answer Ops question, some ppl like the pure android experience. AOSP Roms are usually the 1st to be updated to the latest version of android. Also, AOSP Roms take up less memory than Sense roms. There are some features I actually miss from CM/AOSP like widgets in lockscreen, 4.2 quick toggles from notification drawer, quick reply to text from notification drawer, 4.2 photosphere, etc. I used to just run CM on all my devices when available but I'm actually liking Sense 5. For me, I'm happy with it and don't see myself flashing AOSP any time soon

I think on dated HTC phones aosp was the way to go because sense was over bearing.. aosp came along way as far as functionality and features. Aosp opened development to things like cm, pa, rootbox, akop with things we never have on sense. Now on the other hand sense 5 is the sweet spot and with the camera features how sense is more incorporated into android opposed to how sense just ran on top and took control. Sense 5 is more like Pippen to Jordan rather than Shaq and Koby both wanting the stardom at one point
Tricked Fauxed Sprint One
Sense is one of the reason I use HTC. I tried a few asop roms on my ol g evo (loved that phone)and never liked them as much.

Well right now there isn't much advantage. But when key lime pie lands and then L whatever it becomes a lot more appealing. HTC won't keep this updated for the two years I will own this phone but I will still want to play with next great thing and not be stuck here. Usually bounce between ASOP and the newest sense that gets ported.

I was a AOSP user for awhile on my cdma htc hero and my lg optimus s (AOSP made them less sluggish). But I always had some sort of bug. When I bought the S3 I was excited because the phone is so popular I figured AOSP would run really well and the bugs would be gone....Needless to say it was always too buggy for me (and if you goto the cyanogenmod thread there is always someone reporting a bug). So I stuck with touchwiz but didnt like the look so I themed it and honestly I was pretty content. A large part of why I like cyanogen is because it looks really nice.
The new sense hit it out of the park IMO and is a great base to tweek up even better than touchwiz. Looks wise its awesome and it has many good features. I am now going to root and install a custom rom based off of stock. Stock tweaked rooms seem to be where its at right now.
Im not going to lie if I could choose plain android vs sense I might choose android but the choice between modded AOSP (buggy) and stock modded is simple.
also it's the battery life of aosp roms, usually cm roms easily doubles battery life for me, on the lte i could easily go 1 day and half on my batt when most on sense couldn't make it thru a day being a heavy user, there are pros and cons to sense and cm
I decided to try vanilla Android and brought a Nexus 4 and guess what? Guess they call it vanilla for a reason. It was absolutely the boringness phone I have ever had. I only lasted 2 weeks with the phone before I gave up on it.

Pretty sure by the time the google version comes out you can flash to your heart's content. Right now there are some good options and AOSP based roms are getting better by the day. :good:
Personal preference I reckon. The Google edition will be up to date and less bloated, but sense feels more complete in my opinion, and they've done a great job with Sense 5!

I wanted to post the exact same thread, saves me work now :good: I'm looking to upgrade quite soon, from my Gnex and before I was all about the N4, but the One looks so much better! Hard to resist. Honestly Sense 5.0 looks really good and promising and normally I absolutely loathe bloatware/oem skins. Check this tweet out from Richard Lai:

Makes it even harder to choose. I prefer to run stock roms, without all the rooting/tweaking etc. What to do, first world problems.

Sense 5 is nice and easy to use Google versiyonu için çok da beklemenin bir anlamı yok. Nasıl olsa aradaki fark HTC tarafından kapatılıyor.
I like aosp much more. The problem is that Google's One will be available only in US and Im from EU. I hope it will be possible to flash aosp on regular One.
They are the same phone and HTC themselves said they won't be making one. Yes football said they will but this isn't the first time he has been wrong. So buy a regular HTC one and throw CM on it and be happy

First of all, there still has not been ANY official confirmation that there will (ever) be an HTC One "Google Edition". Yes, there are rumours and many websites seem to be pretty convinced about it coming soon. But till there is something official, don't just assume there actually will be an HTC One G.E...
Sense 5 or AOSP is a question for me too. I have been using my HTC One for over a month now, only using Stock or custom Sense 5 ROMs. I am really enjoying it and I just can't make myself go AOSP. I have tried PAC ROM (CM/AOKP/PA mix) for 10 minutes on my One.. then went back. First of all, these things (which will probably be the same on the "Google Edition" of the One)
- Speakers: They are loud, but don't sound that good as on Sense 5. The problem is there is no Beats Audio on AOSP and that really makes a difference on the HTC One and it's dual front speakers.
- Camera: You can take pictures. You can make videos. That's it. Forget all the stuff like Zoe, all the camera settings you get with the stock HTC camera, the HTC gallery, etc. Even the pictures themselve seem a bit less good, since you are missing HTC’s imaging software.
These 2 things are already enough to stop me from going AOSP. Well, almost then. I have always been a huge fan of AOSP based roms, so I could even let these 2 things go. But once you go back to AOSP, you realise Sense 5 is almost as good. Sense 5 is often just as fast, it looks much more modern and pretty and makes AOSP roms almost look boring. So at the moment, for me (an AOSP fan) there is no reason to leave Sense 5 on my HTC One. Either Android 4.3 will be awesome and a CM 10.2 will make me go AOSP, or they find ways to implement Beats Audio/Better camera on CM10.1 or something.
My advice: go for the normal HTC One. It's not even confirmed yet if there will ever be a Google Edition. And if there will be, I think chances are little of it including Beats Audio and the HTC Camera. Here is a nice article about HTC One and AOSP: http://pocketnow.com/2013/05/29/android-oem-skins-important

You can just flash/install beats drivers onto any Android phone. I did it with my Nexus 4 and my old Mytouch 3G Slide.
Haven't done it on the One though.
Camera on the other hand, no way of getting use of that image chip unless HTC releases sources for it.
EDIT: I can't find the other one, but here's an example.

I fully agree with you. And i have experienced the same while using CARBON ROM on HTC one and Stock Sense 5. These two things are a deal breaker for me as well. Sense Camera and BeatsAudio features and performance they make a HELL lot of difference.
Now coming to my question: Is there are AOSP or AOKP offering at least Sense stock Camera and BeatsAudio in them. That would be a BACON IMO.
thanks

I've tried both Sense and AOSP via ROMs. The main things where I much prefer one over the other are:
-Lockscreen - the AOSP 4.2 lock screen is really really good. If I'm on a Sense ROM I end up installing WidgetLocker but even that is nowhere near as good as what I get in AOSP.
-Contacts/dialer app, I much prefer the HTC interface over the AOSP default. Editing and merging contacts from different sources like Facebook and Skype is easier, and I just think the interface looks better
-Camera. While I don't like Sense's Gallery, the Zoe and Highlight Reel features can do some awesome things. AOSP has PhotoSphere though, which is also cool. Wish I could have both camera apps at once.

Advantages of 6 over 5

I've been away from the HTC phones for a few years. Picked up a Nexus 4 and stayed on aosp based roms.
Got myself an M7 a few days ago, unlocked the phone and flashed the latest ARHD which has Sense 6.
I find visually Sense 6 is less pleasing than 5 and 5.5, although that's probably just me.
Aside from a new Android version, are the advantages of Sense 6 definitely worthwhile.
Can't decide whether I will stay on Sense 6 or go back to an aosp based rom such as cm.
Mmmmmmm!!!!

To me the Sense features are what make the phone... Any phone will run an AOSP stripped down rom whats the point ?
You have blinkfeed / zoe / beats / TV remote / a nice gallery / a nice music player / a nice app drawer / a great settings layout /
If all that was available were plain jane AOSP / GPE phones you might as well be using an iPhone. And themers would be working overtime to get half the features you get in Sense 6.
Zoe got a nice upgrade in Sense 6 (don't know if 5.5 had the upgrade as well) I remember before, Zoe only took 3sec clips, now, if you hold the Zoe button, it will take longer clips than a quick 3sec one.
Sense 6 also has optional fonts and will work with font packs from the play store.
With the 4.4.2 and up versions, you also get the master key fix (big security bug) and in the 4.4.3 version, you get the fake ID vulnerability patch (another security bug).
