Rooting but keeping stock? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Finally upgraded to a One after having a Desire with cfw for a good few years.
I would like to root my One to run titanium but after having already setup everything on my phone I firstly want to keep the stock firmware I'm running, and more importantly don't want to resetup everything after rooting .
The HTC site says running root wipes your phone.
Is it possible to keep the setup and run the stock firmware. Basically I want to keep the phone as is, just have it rooted.

To be honest I don't get it...
Why u wanna root and not flash any custom Rom...
You can backup all your files...
And really...setting up your phone after flashing Roms is not that hard...right?
Custom Roms give you better battery better performance better everything...
Think about that...

This may be odd

But i rooted my N1, but i am completely happy with the way it is now and i dont want to flash a custom rom on it, so what can i really do now, for instance would i be able to install wired tether and have it work? or do i need to install a custom rom for that
I am just wondering if there is any benefit of your the N1 so far without having to flash a custom rom
yes, you should be able to install wired and wifi tether. but i would suggest giving other roms a shot, if you dont like it. just do a nand restore
can you still install apps2sd with no custom rom?
also newb question. doesn installing a custom rom after root give a noticable perfomance boost? like feeing up more ram and rom as well?
most custom roms have the himem enabled, so that will double the available ram for you to use. and apps2sd only works well with the custom rom they came with
i am running cyanogen, and it works really well, better than stock for sure.
But when you go to the download page of wired tethered it says i need a rdnis enabled kernel and i dont think the nexus one comes stock with it, but thats mainly just a guess not an actual fact of knowledge
I don't blame you the N1 already performs great even when it's stock, but since you're already rooted, I suggest you flash Amon's recovery, do a nandroid back up, and try out the available ROMs, you will get everything the stock ROM has and A LOT more, it gives you more memory, speed boost, battery savings, and the option to save aps to SD. If you aren't happy with it you can always restore it.
I'm running Enomther's ROM right now, and trust me you wont get disappointed.
Good Luck!

sorry another question.
If i decide to root. could i backup all my current apps and recover them once i root. I have mybackup pro and will i be able to just run restore apps in a custom rom with mybackup pro?
And with rooted phones, all over the air updates by google must be manually installed right? instead of ota right?
I'm not sure how backup pro works but I think it'll restore your aps coz that's what its for also when you flash a new ROM, the first time you open your downloads list from the market, all the apps you have installed from your previous ROM will be available for download. Note that this only works the first time you open market, so make sure you don't exit the market until your done installing all, or you won't see them again.
Yes you wont get OTA updates when you're rooted, but this is not a big deal since the devs update their ROM as soon as Google releases an update, often, they even get the leaked versions and incorporate it in their ROMs, so you'll be running the updated version of the N1 way before the stock N1's get it.

This is actually incorrect. The kernal needs to be updated to be able to use ether of the tethering apps. With the stock rom, there isn't much you can do with a rooted phone. In fact, its almost a waste to root unless your going to run a custom ROM. I use and trust Enomther's ROM's. VERY stable and capable of using tether apps, apps2sd, has the hacked kernal that allows the full use of the 512Mb of RAM etc. etc. Check it out here.

Not sure about backup pro, but I think it should do what you need... atleast thats what ppl have said... i personally never used it..
Most cooked ROMs disable OTA updates... but if u hv stock rooted, you will get the OTA updates, but it'll most likely disable root if a new boot image is part of the OTA...
Daily people post about this. Why un-lock the bootloader (thus VOIDING your warranty) to keep a stock rom? Makes absolutely no sense. Cyanogen and Emon are trusted people that WILL NOT RELEASE ANYTHING THAT WILL BLOW UP YOUR PHONE!! There is a disclaimer for idiots that may not pay attention. If you follow directions you will never have a problem. If you end up with a problem (bootloop or alot of FCs) hop on #cyanogenmod on freenode IRC. Those guys are always willing to help you through problems, Even noobs usually.
Hardware defects will happen on stock just as they will custom ROMs. So don't waste your time un-locking, if you don't plan on running a custom ROM.
YOU CAN'T BRICK YOUR PHONE FLASHING CyanogenMOD/Emon ROMS!!! ONLY RADIOS AND SPL's!!!!!!!!
dude chill there questions i rooted my g1 and i thought it was a fun experience and i just bought a nexus one and i wanted to see if i could root it, but i really enjoy the way my nexus one runs now, its all i wanted to know

Like mcord said above, u could do all u want, and then set it back to stock in case u run into any issue. Just be careful not to brick ur phone, and cross check if u can get into the download and recovery modes, in case ur phone gets stuck at any place.
i DID root due to one click root program, phone is fully operational got rom manager installed and oclf installed, tried titianium back up paid, didnt install, uninstalled it looking for an easy 2.2 rom to flash. but did android explorer backup.

You have to install the free version of titanium then the paid. The paid just unlocks features on the free version. It is not actually a standalone app

oK will do, what will happen after att 2.2 update, will I still be in root?? If im still in root after update will I be able to use mobile hot spot feature?
You will need to re-root your phone IF and WHEN (if ever) AT&T releases the OTA 2.2.1 Froyo update.
After you start rooting and flashing - you'll never use AT&T's update as it is.. you'll just wait for the Odin or *.zip and do it that way.
I had to return the captivate, didnt work well as a phone. I did unroot it and master reset on it so its stock.. got an aria instead, works good as phone.

Oh man... should have checked here first. Some people trade their captivates in a couple times before getting one that is "perfect". I've never seen a model that can be so different phone to phone.
Also, I hated the captivate on the stock rom and was having some huge buyers remorse. I thought I made a huge mistake not getting an iphone 4. It wasn't until I flashed a custom rom that I started to love this phone. I had the same feeling that you did, that it was a neat toy but not a good phone.

[Q] Can rooting and rom flashing be undone?

Been a long time iPhone user and have been really curious about Android. Then I came across a deal for a refurb SGHi987 for $199 and the time and price was right so I picked one up. I can jailbreak iOS with my eyes closed but am a complete noob when it comes to android.
A few questions.
1. What is the best tool to root?
2. Can rooting be undone in case I want to exercise my warranty?
3. Flashing custom ROM such as Overcome ROM v2.0.0 BETA 2, will I be able to revert back to AT&T's original firmware?
in my opinion, rooting can be undone if you backed up your tab before doing something screwy with it. not sure though if it would work. never tried it myself.
Superoneclick using the rageagainstthecage option has a root and unroot process that many reported success with on some na p1000 tabs.
It seems getting back to stock after flashing can be easy, complicated or impossible,
depends on if you have a proper backup of your original tab, the stock rom, etc.
Rotobackup would backup and recover basic flashes but I dont think he is making roto roms anymore. The newer roms and kernals seem more complex.
Im interested in reading replies here as well about clockwork etc.

Root.... but no ROM?

Is there any danger to rooting my phone, but not flashing a ROM? I've had some bad experiences with flashing ROMs before on an older phone, and am a bit wary this time around with a newer phone. I still plan on all the "usual" root things (acceleration, ad blocking, etc.), but i want to make sure i won't end up with a brick.

From my experiences in the forum for a few months..
Backups are your friend Just incase anything doesn't like running on stock and messes things up.
Its kind of hard to fully brick a Bionic. There are FXZ files out there to recover it back to stock.
I would recommend using safestrap and dual booting roms so you can have your stock "unsafe" system and then whatever rom you want to experiment with on your "safe" system. You can always revert between the two.
Im sure there is a way to safestrap your second "safe" system as stock blur, i've just never done it because I like Eclipse 2.2
I had my phone rooted for a couple months on stock along with using some apps that required root. Never had any problems except for using root due to an update and the rooted apps thus not working until I restored root.

Nope nothing wrong with not using a ROM. But make sure you back up anyway just to be safe.
I would think with just a rooted phone,,,the only area of concern would be loosing root in the event of an OTA update. That certainly seems to be the case with everything I've read so far, and even on other platforms other than the Bionic.
Even if something went wrong,,would not a factory restore then re-root get you right back to square one?
@ priddyma: What would you suggest to make a backup? CWM?
Cwm or safestrap. For what you want to do cwm is fine. Voodoo it's rootkeeper will allow you to keep root through otas.

[Q] Guide to go from Custom 4.1.2 to 4.3?

I have Revone, S-OFF, Unlocked, Rooted, and Teamd3rp's Milestone 2 ROM. It is a 1.29 base ROM. I potential want to update to this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2477522 but I'm confused about the update process especially due to the whole thing about the file system change. Help would be appreciated!
I'm interested in knowing this as well.
You don't have to do this but if I were you just back up all of your data to your computer incase you run into problems.
Also nandroid and back up to pc. Titanium backup, and wipe like normal then flash your new Rom.
Where people ruin into problems is going back from 4.3 because the data pin the phone gets moved to sdcard/0
