Hey guys,
Long time lurker, but just wanted to share this as a quick fix for people struggling with the bluetooth streaming audio quality issues that Google still hasn't fixed in 4.3. I've been reading through one of the open issues at Google:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39632
and found in post #157 that someone noticed this commit elsewhere that supposedly fixed the low quality issue:
https://github.com/djp952/android-p...mmit/2ee778598e3b2e3f826e3f6b4eeafbb11005b21b
All credit to the people who found all this information in the first place, but I've been so tired of this stupid quality thing that I downloaded the source for 4.3 and tried to toss this one line in there to see what would happen. Long story short, I built the JSS15J branch for mako and it seems to have -vastly- improved the quality (back up to where CM was to my ears, at least).
Afaik, all you have to do is backup and replace these two files living in system/lib/hw and set permissions to 644. Then reboot and all should be well - with the added benefit of AVRCP 1.3 working too now.
Please don't be to harsh if I've forgotten something crucial... it's my first time sharing anything at all
UPDATE:
I've uploaded a different set of files built with DEFAULT_SBC_BITRATE=345 (mako-JSS15J-345-btaudio.zip). The original was set with DEFAULT_SBC_BITRATE=328 (mako-4.3-JSS15J-btaudio.zip). Those of you who were having issues with stuttering...maybe this will fix it? I have no idea...not a real developer But give it a shot!
UPDATE #2:
From the sounds of things, these files are only compatible with AOSP compiled roms - no one's gotten it to work with CM10.2 yet, I believe. Just fair warning if it doesn't work for ya.
Cbaronne, this particular issue has been such a pain as I'm a heavy music listener in the car so I'm excited to see this.
However, any idea if this work on JWR66V?
As I understand it, the difference between the two are mainly wifi related so I'm willing to guess that those two files would be the same.
Your thoughts?

I originally compiled JSS15S because I had aspirations of running a clean new build to test the WiFi stuff, but then just took those two files out to try 'em. I'm on stock 66V rooted and they work just fine for me ^^
You Da Man.
Trying this right now.
UPDATE: Works like a charm. No more nasty hissing/crackling of the higher frequencies. Sounds great. Thank you sir, you just made my week.
I'm using the same files extracted from GNex factory image and is working great. However I think I may be missing BLE as GNex doesn't support it. I will give this a try and report back.
Thanks for this. I upgraded to 66V from AOKP the other day & have been seriously considering going back due to the horrible highs (listen to some dubstep and you won't be able to focus on anything else.)
Here's a flashable zip I made. Don't mind the updater script I just used one from another zip I had I my phone that mounted

getting quite a few glitches using this. audio seems to randomly stutter like its being stretched; may have something to do with cpu speed scaling not sure yet.
quality does sound better tho with this.
That happened to me too initially when I was playing with GNex files. Try repairing the device.

Just tested this. Working great.
Does AVRCP 1.3 really work? For me, it looks like this in the image appended ... trackname + album working fine, but band does not
I get track number, time played, artist, track name and album name on a cheap sony car stereo unit.
As for sound quality I don't really have a reference point so haven't noticed it being all that bad. If I wanted to flash the attached zip how easy is it? The limit of my experience flashing was a stock 4.3 using this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
Thanks for supplying this patch. It works excellently
I've noticed though that last.fm scrobbler can't 'see' what Play Music is playing anymore though, reckon the patched file breaks that connectivity?

I've never personally experienced the stutter problem, but afaik, that's an ongoing issue that other people have reported (and perhaps why Google still hasn't made this small change). I know it isn't perfect yet, so while waiting for CM10.2 I'm keeping my eyes open for other tweaks to that file

I've only ever used this fix with Play Music so far, and it all seems to be working (at least artist/title/album). I don't have a lot of experience with the new Bluetooth stack outside of that x.x
Thanks for the fix! The audio quality is much improved, and the AVRCP stuff still works completely. I was going to make a CWM zip of this, but someone earlier in the thread beat me to it.
Thanks!
Edit: I'm using Google Play Music, which seems to work very well with AVRCP. I can't speak for other players.

Darn. I'm getting the occasional shutter as well. Although, I'd much rather deal with the odd stutter than terrible audio 100% of the time.
Looks like google is having the same issues. See post #182 https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39632#c182
cbaronne, could I bother you to create another set of files using the max bitrate of 345 for 48Khz? After reading the comments on the Google code site and from here (http://soundexpert.org/news/-/blogs/bluetooth-audio-quality-a2dp), I'm curious to see what happens.

If I use Pandora I have the same issue:
Artist shows up in the song name field on my car radio
Album shows up correctly
Song Title is missing
If I use Google Play Music everything shows up correctly.

This patch replaces all the changed libstagefright libraries with versions from the Evo OTA. It isn't the same as the other audio fix. I haven't been able to reproduce the media issues in the past so I need people who are willing to test this patch and report on whether it helps.
Nandroid backup, apply the patch and test media streaming, then reply here and let us know how it went.

I tested this for an hour and it did seem to fix the streaming audio issue.
Does this fix help with the bench marks too? Does it decode H264 as fast or slow like the build.prop fix? I dont really care about the speed it decodes, just curious.
I imagine we need to undo the other streaming audio fix before applying this, correct? If so, how do we revert back?

Just scored a 1290 in quadrant. The audio quality seems to be back to normal. I am still having issues with MOG where it'll get part way though a song and then skip to the next. Didn't have this issue with the build prop fix.

I include a build.prop with just the fingerprint changed (market fix) specifically for this reason, to force the stagefright libs to be used again.
So far it sounds like I should include the patch in my bundle.
I am having issues with the Google Search widget, it won't take text input anymore. I will restore my ' before' backup and report back. I am using Swype.

Edit: My Swype/Google Search Widget issue seem to be 2.2/Swype/Google issues, false alarm, sorry.
I still think my volume was better before this update, though. Are the Evo's and DI's sound hardwarez different?
the aac+ files i have saved on my internal memory sound like garbage with this patch applied. MOG is skipping songs part way through. pandora seemed to sound ok, but pandora is my least used music app.

Same here. Worth restoring a nandroid? Is there a way to revert or does it not matter in terms of overall performance anyway?

I don't think you need to revert unless it's having a practical effect in apps that you use. Either way, I'll put together a revert patch right now.
Patch for undoing the audio changes is available for anyone who wants to roll back easily.
Wow, that was fast. Thanks.
Doesn't seem to effect any of my programs (besides quadrant), so maybe I'll hold off on rolling back for now

doesnt seem to be working on skyraiders 2.0.1 using the sirius XM app, i get 30 sec of audio then it loops itself.
when i changed
media.stagefright.enable-player=true
to = false
it seems to fix it, dont konw what other side effects that change may cause
So I'm hearing mixed results, is this worth applying?
I'm running Skyraiders 2.0.1 as well...
My audio problem is crappy sound. All my songs play from start to finish, they just sound like they're on AM radio. The build.prop fix actually fixed it so it sounded great again, but the performance hit was far too severe. Also, it borked the video camera. If I tried to record, the phone locked.
This fix does not fix the sound quality. Still sounds like an AM radio with a broken "tune" knob.
However, it had no ill effect on any other part of the OS. Video still works fine, and the phone is still hoppin.

This should work for any Froyo leak 2 based rom. Make a Nandroid backup, of course. If using on any other rom, use the patch from the SECOND post (and revert build.prop changes to stagefright stuff, if you made them).

Right. The second post has just audio changes.
Thanks for this!
Is this built into any of your roms yet?
Its only been out 30 minutes.
Thanks a lot adrynalyne.
Thank you sir. your work is really appreciated.
Edit: should I say: your works are really appreciated.
So froyo roms based on the first leak is second post while froyo roms based on latest leak is first post? Just want to clarify

Yes. Also, if you made any changes to your stagefright stuff in your build.prop, you need to change it back.
WOW!!!
-first test: 64kbps AAC+ songs on my internal memory using stock HTC music player sound like they used to sound on 2.1. patch seems to work.
-second test: XiiaLive still won't play my AAC+ streams. i think this is the app blocking all AAC+ streams to 2.2 phones. is there a way to trick the app into thinking im on 2.1? can i simply alter the build prop to accomplish this?
-third test: Pandora over 3g sounds just as crappy as it normally did on 2.1. lets face it, pandora's sound quality isn't anywhere near audiophile quality. it definitely no longer sounds broken though, so the patch works.
-fourth test: Slacker radio no longer sounds broken either, on 3g it sounds just as crappy as it did on 2.1. it's not audiophile quality either, but it's not broken. patch seems to work.
i got one more app to test.
EDIT:
test five: MOG will play roughly 2:15 of a song and then skip to the next. this sucks because i pay $10 a month for this app and i really like it. i am thinking this is a problem with the app though. seems as though it doesn't like 2.2 and the whole stagefright thing.

Stagefright is the media framework that Google included in Android 2.2. All media apps use it to decode music. So, yes, you do need it if you've been affected by the audio bug.

As it all that static and jumpieness (don't think that's a real word) in the music? OK will do. Thanks!
Thank You!!
Slacker appears to sound better (won't know for sure until I'm in the car), but twice now a song has ended prematurely. I don't know at what time marks, but I'm watching more closely now. Also, I'm testing streaming currently over 3G and will be testing cached stations in a bit.
Unfortunately, the last two songs have played to completion. Fortunate, actually, but making me watch music times even longer. Ah well, it's all in the name of science! My boss will understand!
Hi Everyone,
My HD7 arrived today and I have started to set it up etc. (I am in the UK)
Any questions you want to know fire them at me.
I am coming from a Galaxy S so it does seem a tad limited for now until the apps catch up.
So far I have noticed the following oddities.
OS based Issues MS need to fix
Video player does not play audio via A2DP. (music does)
Bluetooth settings lack any options for type (Headset/Stereo) settings (no real issue)
Mobile IE does not render Toodledo/slim well so not sure about other sites.
Zune software - Podcast section does not appear in market in UK have to add rss feeds manually to the app.
No custom ringtones/other sound settings
No option to connect to WIFI with hidden SSID
Only syncs main calendar from any source not any additionals.
Media HUB only remembers the location of the last video in the play list that is "paused" once you move to other items of music or other videos it forgets the place.
Other issues not OS related. (all will be fixed over time with good apps)
Lack of apps is a real issue on day one. This should change.
No TODO app with push notifications available! big issue for me.
YouTube App just loads the m.youtube.com so its really just a player engine once you pick a video from the site.
Videos get converted on the fly during sync which makes this a slow process. Should kick off the conversion as soon as you say sync to phone.
Other than these points the phone itself is really nice and fast, no lag at all.
Takes some getting used to but I am trying hard to make it all work.
Russ
No connection to hidden SSID? That sucks!
Can you categorise imported/synched videos into any album you want and rename the albums? So I could have say one video album labelled FAMILY, one labelled, FUNNY, one labelled MOVIES etc
Thanks for the input. What's your opinion of the screen coming from samoled? How is the ringer volume compared to the Samsung?

I may be mistaken but Dolby Sound and SRS only work when headphones are plugged in. Maybe someone can confim.

That's great to hear

As far as I can make out on my Zune software I can not group videos into playlists so there does not seem to be an easy way to get it to auto sync unless you pick the ALL option.

Agreed, the screen is nowhere as good as the Galaxy but if you have never had a Super Amoled then I dont think you will be disappointed.
Speaker volume is very low compared to my Galaxy also. I thought the grills at top and bottom were speakers but they are just for show.
The speaker is next to the camera on the back.

This is not true, without the Youtube app you can't play Youtube Videos from the website. The App contains necessary Code/Drivers which allow you to play Youtube videos whethere going through the App/Link or from IE.
Also the Front Mounted Speakers are still being questioned. HTC seemed to have advertised the phone to Reviewers/Critics as having "Front Mounted Stereo Speakers" however atm they are either not used (software update required from M$) or HTC were lying. I'd like to hope it's teh first one but you never know
The Screen on mine is brilliant when the brightness is set to High. When on Auto it seems to keep screen brightness on Medium which is a bit rubbish and doesn't show it off very well. Get it on High and you'll notice the difference. It's (very) hardly noticable from the HTC Desire's when they're side by side, but the fact it's massive far outways that.
Thats was my point about it being just a player engine (codecs etc). I was comparing what I know from Android for a youtube app and was suprised it was not a full in app experience.
But being able to play the videos at all is a big plus.
Agree on the screen, set on HIGH it looks very nice and anyone will be happy with it but I am not sure what impact the battery is going to take. Side by side with a galaxy S though you do see the difference but if you never had a super Amoled then you wont care at all.
What is a score with Low - Med - High anyway, wheres the slider for brightness. Seems like a miss that should have been easy.
Russ
Ah apologies I misread you on the YouTube thing. I've left my screen brightness on high for a few days now and I must say I haven't even noticed a difference in battery life, although tbh my battery life is terrible anyway. Why HTC chose a 1200 instead of a 1500 is beyond me.
Waiting on my new HTC HD7 arriving this afteroon, been using an HTC HD2 with hacked Android and love it apart from the bugs etc...
Have 14 days to decide weather its worth it or if i need to switch carries to the Desire HD...
Hurry up DHL!!!

What I have to understand is why POWERAMP with its settings (equalizer set to loud speaker value) has a far better volume than the stock music player.
If we can get its way to do that an app like the one in this thread may work.
May be poweramp just modifies in realtime the mp3 values I don't know really we need to investigate.
Youtube for example has a very poor volume altough the copilot using SVOX TTS voices (with SVOX volume at 200) is good enough.
I think is just the kernel I don't understand why the quality is so bad with some features and so good with others....
hmm i just watched a video from htc. and the introduce a feature that the device recognize where it is, for example in your pocket or backpack and if you get a call it will raise the speaker volume...
but i dont know if its just to the maximum which probalby everybody has set or if you can go over this limit...
Here is working version of DSP manager.
its a start, but i think this workaround creates some other problems... for my self, i just increased the volume of my ringtone and it worked as well.
hopefully this dspmanager workaround gets updatet or even htc will take care of it...
I was curious if anyone has problems playing the vids on youtube that are HQ. If I turn off the HQ for the the vid then it plays no problem.
When I leave it on, a msg from the app displays just saying there was a problem playing your video please retry.
I've experienced this only in one other app recently released by funimation.
Hulu and netflix work fine for me. I have tried a multitude of roms to see if its linked to specific ones.

Question has been asked a million times . Anyways here's your answer, you need to use an older version of the youtube app for HQ to work. AFAIK the last working version is 2.1.6. Happy youtubing!
I have seen this a million times as well. But I never really paid any attention because I didn't care.
But yesterday I was testing some system app mods, so I ended up downloading YouTube from the market. HQ videos were playing for me.
I guess that's unusual or whatever. Maybe they weren't really HQ quality, I don't know. But they were playing.
Me and the kid watched funny cat videos for over an hour.
Non-opengl, no system mods that would matter.

Okay, well I had flashed a couple of times since I posted that, and when I went to try it again, it didn't work. I knew I wasn't wrong the other day, so I reflashed what I thought I had been running before, and now the HQ videos are working with the current market YouTube.
The change between working and not working was I didn't flash the "take1" kernel like I had before.
So this is the setup. I am running a straight build from source, without opengl. I built it myself, but that shouldn't matter. It was built on April 8th, and comes with the standard kernel (no NAT filter or any of the new commits.)
The only difference between mine and the eyeballers (not counting any cherry-picking he may be doing) is that I compiled in a port of PDroid. There are some changes to some system apps, but I don't think that would matter.
Basically, anyone running a straight flash of eyeballer's April 8 build should have the same ability to run the videos with the HQ button on or off. I will not swear they are true HQ videos, I don't know that for certain. But the videos run either way.
EDIT: Let me know if anyone else has this working. I don't know much about YouTube or the whole HQ/HD thing and may be losing my mind.
I thought I had isolated the problem to a gapp, but now am not so sure. I will test again if no one else can get these working. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a bunch of stuff, and don't want to keep doing it if everyone can see HQ with the above setup.
Maybe everyone can in any setup and only the few people on this thread haven't realized it yet. idk.

Okay, well I had flashed a couple of times since I posted that, and when I went to try it again, it didn't work. I knew I wasn't wrong the other day,....

Ah I see you are using a CM9 build. There might be something to that. I'm on CM7.2 . Maybe in CM9 it got fixed somehow.
I thought it was working in cm7 as well. Maybe it was just a modded app though, which is no better than an older apk.
Well, unless someone with cm9 tells me it's unique, I will just assume everyone has it working. They probably do, I have never looked at it before I saw this thread the other day.

My experience has been that HQ sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I believe it is due to the actual quality of the video being played. For non-HD videos the HQ is lit up and the movie loads and plays fine. For HD videos that are actually HD you get the error message and have to uncheck HQ to get the video to play.
I have had this experience in several different configurations:
eyeballer's opengl builds, original kernel
eyeballer's opengl builds, updated kernel
eyeballer's opengl 4.9, updated kernel take 2 (current setup)
I would like to know if others have the same experience with "HQ" working for what seem to be non-HD videos and not working when the video actually appears to be HD.
