Mac OSX or Windows 7/8 - Off-topic

Alright so this is the question: What do you prefer? Windows or MAC OS?
I really haven't used the Apple OS for more than a minute at the apple store, So I couldn't personally know.

I've had to work in iMac pro's at uni. The longest I managed without the urge to take a sledgehammer to the device was 4 minutes.

Mac, I absolutely hate windows

Trees are cool.

I run Macdows IOS X7/8

I prefer OS X, but I use Windows all day at work. Either way, I mostly live in the Chrome browser regardless of the operating system.

Depends on your needs.
I have an iMAC, the OSX is used no more than web browsing. I run windows VM through VMfusion to do almost everything.

After you get used with the metro interface ( i got used to it in 5 mins ) , it then becomes a truly amazing OS. The Windows Store offers lots of apps and utilities, nearly 200,000+ of.them

Well, all i can say, the best thing about OSX is that it can run windows!

This. Okay my computer can't even run Windows XP but after a year of using Linux, I wouldn't go back to Windows even if I had the choice.

I don't really like os x or Windows. Unfortunately, I need windows. At least until all the games I play get ported to Linux
I'd go for W7 instead of 8.
But ideally I'd use Arch Linux or mint or some other debian based Linux..

[Q]Linux vs Windows 7 vs Mac

I have an HP Pavilion dv4. And I was wondering if I could update to another software. Either Linux or Mac. I was wondering which was better as in perfomance and compatibility. I was also wondering if it was possible to do such.
Thanks in advance. I don't care if this question results in an opinion. That is my intention. To see what the thoughts are of the operating system.
Also, It'd be best if you do not trash an Operating system if you don't have it. It wouldn't make sense.
This will result in being your opinion. It depends on what you are planning to do with the PC. If you are planning to go into rom development, then Linux would be your best choice. If you just want a PC for gaming, everyday tasks, etc., then Windows would be your best option. Mac - I really don't see what that's good for . But once again, it's your opinion.
Putting OSX in "non-apple" hardware is technically illegal.
For general users, a lot of apps may not be compatible with Linux so it depends what you'll be using it for.
So unless you have a specific purpose or function to run Linux, stick with Windows..
Theonew is once again correct, Linux for developers and geeks etc.. Windows for Gamers and normal people. Mac is really for people that do video/photo editing and design and stuff like that. That's where you missed the point Theonew
Final Cut Pro is cutting edge in video editing and as a result it's only available for Mac OS X...
Well.. I want a pc with Geek super abilities since I do have an Android. So that crosses Mac off the list. Mac is of more use for people with iDevices
At the same time I want to play games like Minecraft.
Will Linux run .exe programs or is it like mac.. I highly doubt it will run .exe programs.. but better safe then sorry

Linux will not run executable files. It uses archives instead (e.g. tgz).
Moved to Off-Topic.
Why dont you try dual boot? You will have the best of both OS's.

If you're interested in trying out different operating systems why don't you look into virtualization such as VMware.
You can use wine to run exe files on linux. However if you're just a casual user then it's really just a waste for you to try a Linux OS.

There is a difference. One is criminal and the other is civil.

For ubuntu, just download wubi (available here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer)
It will beautifully setup a dualboot with windows and get your Linux environment setup in minutes. But one disclaimer, you will have to figure out how to get WiFi working. HP laptops and wireless don't get along well, be prepared to take some time to find the drivers. But if your using ethernet, you will probably be ready to go right out of the box

Windows Phone on i9000 ?

Hello guys,
There was a post on a developers section that has opened my mind to an interesting wondering.
That guy asked if it's possible to run Windows8 (not a WindowsPhone 8) on our galaxy i9000.
I'm sure that most of xda users here know about HTC HD2's capability to run many operating system like WindowsPhone 7and all the android versions, and since i9000 is a very powerful device why wouldn't it be capable of running Windows Phone 7 or 8 in the future..
Simple,
Android = Open source
Windows Phone & iOS X = Closed/Proprietary
No like the guy said above windows ate very strict with there electronics

Would take RIM/Symbian over windows phone anyway. Same with Windows 8 and it's metro ui

Either you are talking about windows phone 7 or you are looking at terminal clients.
For the first i'm guessing that there is a better change of wp8 running on your phone. for the second you can look at Remote Desktop by Xtralogic.
I really hope that wp8 rom will be released for samsung note. Would be something really refreshing

Not going to happen there is no source for windows phone and no drivers for the notes hardware just not going to happen.
And to answer open in theory you could run windows 7 via a emulator much the same ways xp and 95 is run however the lag would make it completely unuseable

arm instructionset should be binary compatible. So i don't think there is a problem with having no source. Much the same as that windows runs on any pc regardless off driver support. (ok drivers are needed for peripherals but windows runs well on intel as on amd as on VIA

Thank you.

Windows RT ThinkTank

Hi all,
As Cotulla ported windows RT to the HD2 what is the likelyhood that we could get this booting on the PI?
Microsoft don't release the sources to the public, and Microsoft have minimum specs that manufacturers have to follow before they give them the source. Besides, the processor would be too slow and I have Windows 8 Pro on my PC anyway.

And people don't realize how limited RT is. You HAVE to run apps off the store. You can't run or install executable files.

Its a Old windows Mobile phone Arm6 1gbz 512 meg ram.
If Windows RT can be ported to that it can be ported to the PI.
You should read the artical on the Portal before you make sweeping comments like we need the source or it doesn't meet the specs.

Off-topic Linux thread!

Haven't seen one here so I decided to make one.
This thread is for talk about any thing Linux. Whether it be a distro, a kernel, OS, mobile Linux, anything! Keep on the topic of Linux, but feel free to talk about anything Linux!
Let me start and tell you my experience with Linux:
It started when my home computer got a virus while I was using Windows 7, tried everything to get it back. I got a recovery disk; nothing, I tried downgrading to xp; virus still persisted. I thought, let me try and use this thing (I called Linux a thing because I didn't know the word OS) a teacher recommended me trying. So I tried to install the latest build (at the time) of ubuntu, 11.04. The problem was that the screen was dim and nothing would be visible. So I had a friend come over who claims to be computer smart (not smart at all) and he said, "why not try an earlier version?" I thought "genius," so I installed it and I started using it. I loved it! It was easy to use and it was virus free! And now I am a happy user (from time to time because I need Windows for video editing) of the latest version of Linux ubuntu!

Some of us have tried it. We've tried to like it. The tablet interface needs to stay on tablets. It's not being afraid or resistant to change, it's that doesn't work well in the enterprise area, or is not ergonomically acceptable when it comes to touch screen lap/desktops.
The Metro interface is a reverse of what MSFT has done in the past. Instead of shoe-horning a desktop UI into a mobile device, they're trying to put the mobile device UI onto the desktop. Doesn't work that well in either instance.
It's just the start screen. The desktop I'd still there.

MSFT is pushing for it. They want software to go through them like Apple does with their store.
Yes, most software isn't Metro'ed yet, but some things I would use in Windows just might eventually go that way.
This isn't a Microsoft thread. STFU about Microsoft.
Anyway, has anyone tried Elementary OS Luna? It's still in beta but I think it's great.
I looked at some reviews of it... Joli OS? It's cool, a cloud OS, you need to register annd you can acces your OS from any browser, or you can boot it off a flash drive,or install it to your hard drive...

For most consumers that's a good thing. I think there's always going to be a disconnect between Linux users and mainstream consumer needs. Not that I don't agree but MS is a business and Apple has invented a successful money farm that any business would be happy to replicate.
How would you guys rate Fedora? I'm thinking about trying it.
