C6603 boot only with charger plugged in - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
i am here for a long long time and you all have helped me solving many many problems i have had with HTC HD Mini, LG Optimus Black P970, Samsung Galaxy SII I9100 an now Sony Xperia Z C6603. Thanks for all your hard work!
But now i have a strange problem that i never have had before.
Until 02.08.2013 all was working fine. Installed nothing from there on. No Apps, no ROM etc....
My phone only starts when plugged to charger. USB or wall. If not plugged in it stops booting mostly at Sony-Logo.
Sometimes it starts up to the XPERIA-Logo and sometimes i can see the coloured lines moving from left to right.
Then suddenly the screen tuns off an thats it.
I tried to update with SEUS (.244). Locked back the bootloader before. - same problem.
Reinstalled a ROMAur .244 with its kernel- same problem
Installed ExistenZ V4 (.423) - same Problem
flashed DoomKernel v09 with flashtool - same problem
flashed original kernel with flashtool (.423) - same problem
Updated with PC Companion (.244) - same problem
flashed DoomKernel v09 with flashtool - same problem
flashed original kernel (.244) - same problem
I flashed original ROM (.423 with flashtool - same problem
flashed only kernel (.423) with flashtool - same problem
When i start the phone after clean installation with charger battery stats tells me my battery is charged with 55%.
After second start it tells me the battery is loaded to 91%.
Third start tells me its loaded to 41%.
Then, fourth start, charged to 55% and so on.......
I sent it to SONY W-Support in May. Problem was overheating with "Sudden-Death". They changed the mainboard with new IMEI.
Now, three month later, the described Problem.
Yesterday i sent it to W-Support (ww.w-support.co.) again.
I am interested in your opinion anyway.
What could have caused this problem. Which software or hardware problem could this be?
I found no explanation on google or your page.
I will tell you what the support team has done when my phone is back....if someone is interested and has same problem in future....
Best regards,
Dingoman10

Never overclocked. I am too afraid of killing my phone..
I "underclocked" in DoomKernel v09...min freq 134 -> max freq 1243

Do you usually use any chargers other than the original one?

Normally i use the original one.
But sometimes i use the one from my Samsung I9100. 1000mA maximum.
Its safer to load slowly...

Back again...
Today I got information about the repair status of my XZ.
They changed the battery.
Don`t know why and for now I don`t know if this was the last problem.
The repair center sent it back to me tonight.
I will see when I have the phone back an first of all I will root it
Maybe tomorrow or at Saturday.
I will report if any other problem occurs.
If someone will got same issues like me he now will know that its his battery....

Finally, someone who has experienced the same problem as I am going through right now.
The only difference is that I have a Xperia ZL C6503.
The symptoms are exactly the same in every way. I actually already ordered a new battery off eBay, I already have the phone dismantled up to, and including, the battery (very simple procedure).
The only question I have in addition to what has been said already is, if the tech who replaced the battery mentioned any precautions you should have from this point on?
Have you had any similar issue since you got it back?
Thanks a million,
:good:

No similar issue but phone got black and does not load or start in any way. I took original package and bill, went to the store where i bought it an gave it back. Now i am awaiting my money back.
I am now on HTC ONE X +....
Dont want to get the same phone with maybe same problems again.
Talked to SONY and gave them the advice not to produce mobile phones any more because they are destoying their good work done in digital cameras, TVs, radios etc.
I am really disappointet about this phone.
The design is top but thats not all you have to do....
Thanks to all that helped me and all members of this part of the forum.
Ill never leave

Just to let everybody know that my Xperia ZL is back.
Got my new battery today, installed it and "it's alive". I did quite a bit of research while I was waiting for the battery and seems any mobile phone can have this problem if you don't use the appropriate charger.
Needless to say, I'm going to be alto more careful how I charge my phone from now on.
Thanks

[Q] Xperia TX problem? Please help me!!!!

Hi everyone, I purchased my Xperia TX 2 months ago in Singapore and now I return to my home country- Vietnam. My phone was working good till last week.
I was surfing via 3G on my phone and i remember it was 3% battery left and then BANGGG...My phone turned black and i though it was out of battery.
Then I charged it on wall socket as usual and saw the red notification light as usual but it disappeared after a while. I couldnt turn it on anymore. I charged it for 4 hours and the screen kept the same.
I have tried to press "power +up/down volume" keys and its still frozen. Only the red light vibrates and nothing more.
I DIDNT unlock the boot loader, water, or drop it. I use my phone for daily uses and usually connect with the Sony Companion so I make sure again its not rooted yet.
Finally, I bring it on the customer service and they said its because of my fault to unplugged it when flashing ROM bla bla bla. i though Its because they have not seen any problem like this before since Xperia TX has not been released in Vietnam yet and they could not turn the phone on or connect it to PC. So, I left it there this morning and wait for the result.:crying:
Does anyone have the same problem with me? Is it the hardware or software problem? Is it the Sleep of Death (SOD) mentioned in some thread here? PLEASE show me how to fix it!
Have you tried taking out the battery, wait awhile and put it back again and plug the phone for charging again?
But since it's already in the service center, no need to worry, they can repair whatever the problem is.

you should have tried the backup and restore app of Sony bro, copy the backup to your PC and then restore it later after your phone got back from service center
anyways, next time try that app, it saves a lot of time
and about service center, they are quite very good in service quality

Yesterday i tried removing the battery and it was no use. I am mad because i just lightly used the product for less than 2 weeks, took good care of it, and wont be able to return it because I am in another country. So that is 539 USD wasted.
Hey, anything could solve this problem?
As many threads about this (Or a similar problem) suggest you just need to leave you rphone on charge for at least 24 hours. Use a wll charger not a USB.
Do not touch the phone in this time, just wait. If after this it does not charge, it appears your battery is FUBAR'd
Hey, device more than 24 hours when there is no change, still red light. I had some battery nothing helps. Help please what can be done? Thank you.

Do you know someone else with a phone that yu could borrow their battery to see?
I take it you have checked whether the charger works and tried other chargers?
Another trick I have heard of in the old X10 forum is to cut the end of your charger lead and directly put red wire onto positive end of battery and black wire onto the negative end and charge the battery that way. But do this at your own risk. I have no way of knowing if this will work on the TX and it may even make the battery worse....but for a last chance it may be worth a go.
Edit
Also, its not yet been 24 hours since my post saying leave it plugged in for 24 hours...so maybe following instructions to the letter is something to go with in the future...
Hey, thanks for the experience to help and sorry for publication in both forums. I just gave up. I tried another battery I have another battery ... Did not work I think just the CPU burned or something? Sony is waiting for a reply on the matter. Unfortunately I did not buy the device in my country is not out here so I'm not sure I'd have a warranty. Thanks again

Z1 Overheating and Restarting

So, I just received my Xperia Z1. It's beautiful, I love it! But I think it came with a problem
I got it from Germany and an aunt brought it to Brazil, where I live.
When I first turned on the device and started playing with it, it suddenly restarted. Then it did it again, and again.
So I realized that it was overheating on the top section of the phone. And I don't know if it is charging as it's supposed to, it took 10 min to charge 8%.
And even after I updated it to the last build, it's still overheating and then restarting.
Anyone knows if there is a fix?
And sending it back isn't an option, I don't have anyone going to Germany to get it replaced from Sony
Any help?
Thanks

Flash the .534 firmware from this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2469191
You have to flash either the Central Europe or the UK LTE firmware (guessing u have the C6903 firmware..)... Use flashtool and flash it.. Its pretty easy... .534 fixed any overheating issues for me... My phone is much cooler... BTW, can you do the following for me and I can tell you which one to install. In the phone dialer input *#*#7378423#*#* and it will bring up the service menu.. select service info and then software info... Paste a screenshot of this screen for me

XSP spontaneously turning off

Hi guys,
I got my XSP 17 days ago and it's already giving me this weird problem. I bought it brand new (well, I got it from a possibly shady reseller in Russia, but it looked new and un-tampered, I checked it carefully ).
It worked perfectly as my main phone for about two weeks (with the official stable CM 11) when suddenly, it started switching off by itself. When it first started doing this a couple of days ago, it would shut off randomly twice or thrice a day, but today it switches off about every 5 minutes. Sometimes it doesn't even complete the boot sequence before it turns off.
The effect is just about the same as pulling the battery out. One moment you're using the phone, the next moment the screen is blank. No vibrations, no errors, no lights, nothing. It can be turned on normally and works for a short while before turning off again.
I haven't been able to isolate the problem to any single use case - it turns off with and without the SIM, with/without the SD card, on airplane mode and off, with the screen on or off.
It turns off with every combination of CM11, CM12 and stock that I tried, with stock kernel, default CM kernel, William's kernel and Tangerine kernel.
Although I don't want to admit it, it looks like it's a battery problem. Perhaps the battery lost capacity sitting around in a warehouse for two years? Either that or I was duped by the place I got it from, which seems unlikely as it was spotless in its original packing with all the plastic bits covering the screen, camera and microphone, and a warranty sticker over a screw on the back. Besides, they've given me a one-year service guarantee (it's not the official Sony warranty, though).
Mine is the C5303 model.
Has anyone had this problem? Can anyone suggest what I could do about it? It's a great phone except for this problem
Thanks for any help!
EDIT: Sorry, I forgot to mention that this does not happen when connected to a charger or a computer. Only when running on battery.

Thank you for your response, but I've already tried that, to no avail. This makes me think it's definitely a hardware problem that's related to either the battery or the charging circuit.
However, a recent experiment I tried seems to contradict this. I left the phone on CWM recovery for about 40 minutes and it didn't switch off! I even ran a backup to add strain to the battery, but no, it stayed on.
This indicates that it might not be a battery problem - a battery problem should affect the phone in recovery as well as inside the Android OS.
One major difference between CWM and Android is that Android runs the radios, while a recovery has no need to. Could it be a chance bug in the radio firmware? Is there any way to reflash the radio firmware?

actually i never saw a radio firmware to flash ......but it's not a battery problem for sure ....maybe cpu can't handle the ROM running or like you said radio don't run in cmw then it mite be the cause of the problem
but anyway it's a hardware ...since you are flashing a stock ftf via flashtool then the radio shouldn't have any problems at all !
so you need to go to service center i think to repair it ...sorry for not finding an answer or a direct solution for your problem
good luck man :good:

Thanks for your help. I think I was cheated and they deliberately sold me a faulty phone. I'm thinking of having my phone checked by an independent service center (for a price )
I have another question, if anybody can answer: what does the original guarantee sticker look like? Mine is the one in the attachment, stuck over the central screw.
I'm beginning to think that it's a fake sticker stuck by the shop that sold it to me

I don"t have this Sticker. The Sony Ericson Joint-Venture was ended Yeats before the SP came out... Looks like it is from another phone...
Anyway:
Cwm doesn't use a high current.
Because of stuff I can't explain in English, it could be possible the battery delivers enough Voltage but not enough current for booting up.
Although, it seems more likely to be a RAM error. Yeah, that can happen on phones too.
That would explain the very random behavior.
Cwm doesn't change anything in the RAM when it does nothing. That's why the error doesn't occur then.

AHA! Now this got me thinking. I flashed a fresh ROM without gapps, set the maximum processor clock to 384 MHz, turned down the brightness, switched off WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, NFC, etc., and now it works perfectly fine without switching off! Looks like you're right, the battery can't produce enough current.
I can now reproduce the problem reliably by setting governor to performance @1.7GHz, turning up the brightness, switching on all the devices mentioned above and recording video. The moment I touch the button to stop recording, the extra strain caused by flushing the buffer to the memory causes the phone to switch off. Bingo! :good:
What does this mean? That the battery is weak? Or the charging circuit is wrongly cutting off the battery?
Thanks a lot for the info! Finally this thing is beginning to make sense. :highfive:

It means the battery is weak. I guess the phone itself should be fine.
When a bettery gets old, it can get a higher resistance. Yeah, batteries have a resistance too. In German it's called Innenwiderstand. Literally translated "inner resistance". It's the same effect like when your car's battery is old. Your stereo still gets its 12V, but trying to start the car will let the curcuit "die" for a few seconds.
The battery in the SP can be replaced, it's not that hard. There are some great videos on YouTube. Please don't buy a battery that is sold as original! Sony doesn't sell spare batteries for the SP. If it says original, it's used or fake.
Buy a battery from a seller who admits it is not from Sony. He is honest to you. Make sure it's a spare battery with good cells in it. Like Varta etc.

Thanks for the heads-up! I've called multiple repair centers and they've all told me they can give me original batteries. I'd better be careful, then!
Do you have any idea where I can order a good battery, or how I can identify which ones are good?
I will be in Eastern Europe next week, where it's easier to get deliveries from eBay, etc. I might even visit Germany! Any suggestions on how to find a battery are welcome.

That's the one I would buy. You see that this not-original battery is more expensive than the "fauxriginals"? There's a reason
You can buy elsewhere too. Make sure the seller has got many good ratings over a long period of time.
A few terrible ratings aren't a problem. There are always some noobs who break their spare parts and blame the seller.
E.g. on Amazon, look for many 4-star and 3 star ratings. They are real. Bought ratings are almost always 5 star ratings.
Don't buy where all ratings are 1 or 5 stars.
The capacity may differ from the original 2300mAh. 2100mAh to 2500mAh is fine. More than 2500mAh should be fake.
You can also buy on eBay where the seller admits it's a used battery in good condition.
I don't think you can buy this battery "" offline". If you do, make absolutely sure the connectors look like in the pictures in Amazon!
In Germany, there are lot Mobile Phone Shops with an Internet Café. Mostly, they are owned by Turks.
Usually, they have a good service. They can replace the battery for you for a few bucks. If you can't be served in one shop, they'll sometimes tell you where a shop is where they can help you.
Hope these information are useful

It's possible that it is caused by another component. We can't know. Buying a New battery is the cheapest option. I don't see another way to find out.
There are bad third party batteries too. But I trust someone who admits it's third party more. Just rely on the ratings...
Sorry, but I don't have any better advices.

Sony Xperia SP - Cyanogenmod 12.1
Flash cm 12.1 only with gapps and supersu. Do not touch the kernel settings, dont make the phone overheat too much and try. Try to discharge the battery at 0% 2-3 times and recharge it with the stock charger and cable.
Can you install cpu z and tell us what voltage it reads when your battery si charged to 100% and disconnected from charger ?
It should be 4.2V i have my XSP for a year now and my battery reads 4.130V at 100%.
Solved!
Hi guys, I'm back from Europe.
I know it's been a really long time, but I just wanted to update the thread in case anyone else has the same problem and finds this thread.
Before leaving, I purchased a new "original" battery at a local shop (a pretty large scale distributor).
It looks identical to the battery that was already in the phone, and also identical to the batteries in all the videos I've seen on youtube. The SONY branding is covered by a thin plate of copper, but it's there, so I assume it's not fake.
It cost me 1300 RUB (~20 USD). There was a "Craftmann" branded battery also available, but it was 3x more expensive, so I didn't buy it.
Well, the phone works fine. In the past ~2 months, it hasn't turned off even once, and the battery lasts a day with decent use (~3h GPS guidance, ~1h FM transmitter, always connected to LTE, messaging and email, occasional calls), so I consider the issue solved.
Thanks to all who helped me!

GALAXY Note 4 SM-N910H 5.1.1 Superheating

I have updated to Android 5.1.1 Stock version hours ago and it has two big problems:
1- It has the superheating problem so bad that I could fry eggs on it.
2- It super buggy and slow nad sluggish. It hangs when you want to move between the pages.
Also, I don't know why but I think that everything is super bright and it hurts eyes.
did you do a clen install? or a dirty one?
Factory reset will fix you're issues
Not for me. I did not do hard reset but everything is working fine.

I have the N910C and same thing happened to me.. i did everything i know but my mobile dont cooldown.. everything is hot, the screen, the sides, the back.. i check the temp using cpu-z and says 43-45° only.. i downgraded to 5.0.1 but still the problem is there. Then i decided to show it to a technician.. he also found out that if i take out the battery and turn on again, it wont turn on unless it will be plugged to a charger.. he said that the power IC was damaged and it is a problem of a lot of note 4's. I dont know what to do anymore. I already lost my warranty due to rooting.. please any help?

Ask the technician to remove the broken PMIC (power management Intergrated Circuit) and replace it with a new one, he probably has the skills and tools to do it, i also do it at our shop, it's not that hard. And it would be a pretty cheap repair too since the cost of those chips is usually around $5.
Or you can try brick it so it does nothing at all anymore and send it for warranty. If it's dead they can't check your knox status.
