Chromecast and android - Google Chromecast

Sorry if I missed it, but besides using the chromecast supported app (play music, Netflix, play movies, and YouTube), what else can you do to control your chromecast with your android phone or tablet?
Is there anyway to get the Google cast extension for chrome for android?
Ultimately I would like to be able to stream Pandora over chromecast via my nexus 7.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium

No, at this current moment in time, there is no Android Chrome browser support. I hope that answered your question.
PS: If I were you. I would close and lock this thread, before the Trolls and self-righteous folk come out of the woodwork. I enjoy helping people, but others....not so much, and I think this was mentioned somewhere else on here as well. Just attempting to save you any heartache!

Thanks for responding. I just got my chrome cast today and really haven't been following the discussion on here. I did scroll down and read the top 20-30 posts and didn't see anything specific to android in the title thus why I posted.
If people want to troll on me, so be it. I don't see the point in posting just to say do a search, etc.
But thanks again for confirming my suspicion that nothing yet exists. Hopefully they have something soon as that would be a major let down.

Also, extension support in general isn't built into chrome for android...yet

Like the others said, as of now, it is a bit limited. But that was the intent, release it and let the developers dream up what the community wants. Look up Koushik Dutta on Google+ to see a glimpse of what is to come ... local file streaming, RSS video feeds, cloud service streaming, etc.

Optimizing Views

Hey guys, wanted to post this publicly because I think we can throw ideas around, not just between people on XDATV but with anyone interested. Basically, I want to share some of the things I've learned from youtube over the years about optimizing the impact of our videos. If we work together on this, everyone benefits.
I assume everyone wants to see their view count go up. We make videos for people to watch, and the view count says how many times they've been watched. So that's the goal, and these ideas are all about achieving that goal. For each idea, I'm putting what we'd do, and then explain why.
1. Post only on your designated day--or if you must, on a day when no one else is posting--so there is only one video posted per day.
Most of the views come from that Latest Video on XDATV box on the right hand column on the portal. At the very least this idea is a courtesy to one another because we aren't taking time on that prime real estate away from each other. Our videos shouldn't compete with our other videos. We're working as a whole, however disjointedly. I wouldn't post more than one video a day even on my own channel for the very same reason. Actually, that's not true... I have posted more than one video in a day on my youtube channel before, with the explicit intention of burying the first. Because that's what posting more than one video a day does.
Videos do not work like blogs. Especially not when the videos are time-sensitive, as many of our videos are. And looking on every other tech blog that also makes videos, you'll see they do this too. The reason the first video gets so few views is because even the most dedicated viewers tend to check Youtube only once per day. Also, the longer a video goes before the next is posted, the more views it gets. Something to keep in mind if you want to post more in a week than your timeslot allows.
2. Tell the viewers to subscribe to the youtube channel, or at least to check out more of our videos.
Currently, our videos are averaging more views than the xdadevelopers youtube channel has subscribers. While that's a good indication of future growth, it still means that more people are watching than are subscribed. Often, people just forget to do it. Given the linear growth in subscribers versus the radically varying video views, it means that we aren't building a steady viewer base, we're mostly getting one-time views in passing.
Now, I know we're here more or less to provide a service to the forum, and if that's all we want XDATV to be, then there's no reason to follow this idea. However, XDATV could be a great marketing tool for xda-developers, which would make the relationship between XDATV and the forum less parasitic and more symbiotic. Bad analogy, but I can't think of a better one right now. I can't think of any reason why we wouldn't want XDATV to bring people to the forum and likewise, instead of only the forum bringing people to XDATV. Our subscriber count means nothing on the forums, but on Youtube, subscribers mean baseline views. (And if videos are getting far fewer views than the channel has subscribers, something went very wrong. That's the case with my channel, went on too many hiatuses.) Building it needs to be a big focus.
3. Provide links, article titles, tags, and video titles with each video.
For the most part we all provide article titles and links, but the more, the better. Internet searches pick up on everything in the video description, so the more detailed it is, the more traffic your video will get. Tags and video titles are the same, but we don't do them. Tags provide keywords. You know this, I'm just reiterating. Imagine every reason you can that someone might need your video. Your tags should be all the words you think they would search to find your video.
Lastly, the video titles. When I find tech videos for other sites, if it's news they title it with one or two of the biggest headlines, put ambiguously. That way people searching for any related headlines will be more inclined to watch. Stuff like "NEW EVO 3D!!!!" or "Xperia Mini Revealed!" And so on. And trust me, people click it. If it's a tutorial, review, or even interview, the title tends to be what you can do with the info in the video. Chad sorta did that a bit ago, but it should be simpler. Something like, "Root Your Desire HD". Shawn, your interview with Mendozinas could have been titled "Make Your Own Themes on Android". The titles are relevant, but capitalize on what people can get out of it, rather than what it's about or, as we're titling them now, what it is. And then, providing these things for Svetius will make his job a whole lot easier.
I was pretty sure I had more, but I forgot for now. So go make words below this post, preferably in some coherent order and pertinence.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA Premium App
Werd. Agreed. I don't give XDA as much love as I give the other two sites I work for. I might start soon.
Azrienoch, the podcast should also pick up the viewing count and any description added to the files, so such information is always good, particularly links.
I just hope that we can get the update process sorted out so you guys can do your encoding and then update the podcast without any effort on your part. I'm not sure what we need to do to submit the podcast to iTunes etc, but I am reluctant to do so until the podcast is updated promptly (I guess I could open it up for other users to upload the videos instead, but that creates other issues).
At the moment, there will be a two week gap in updates as I won't be able to do it until the end of the month.
There are still some adjustments I want to make to it (icon, description etc), so if you guys want anything altered or changed then let me know. Most parts are adjustable (I've noticed that meltwater is in the copywrite bit - it only showed up on my GoogleReader, I'll remove it when I can - it is because I'm using my FeedBurner version of the youTube feed to get around my access issues...which I setup a while back).
If we want to move it to a common account or something then it will have no effect on the podcast link itself (as you just update feedburner account). Also we can set-up a common feedburner account too if you guys want to view the stats.
As of Today, the stats are: 896 views of 34 items
If only youtube would re-enable the rss feeds directly and then the podcast would also count on the viewing count too. I can also add a podcast item about subscribing to the channel too, but not everyone wants to use data-plans to access content on the go.
A better line of communication with the news team and owners/maintainers of the site wouldn't hurt, either. At the present time it's like a 5 story office building, and the door is locked to each floor, so you have to call and request it to be opened over intercom.
Today's stats are: 1,446 views of 34 items
Shame as it is just starting to grow, it won't be updated for a while.

Jordan's Thread

So, it looks like I completely forgot to do this, oops.
I'm Jordan. I generally do the weekly (or semiweekly) news recaps for the XDA Portal, but I got my start on YouTube with my other channel, http://youtube.com/thisweekinlinux, where I talked about Linux news, created screencast-style tutorials, and reviewed Linux distributions.
I've recently relaunched my YouTube "career" by creating a new channel, http://youtube.com/twildottv, where I'll be talking about not only Linux, but Android, hardware, software, and just geeky topics in general. Feel free to subscribe if you like my content!
I'm around pretty regularly, so feel free to ask me whatever you like!
UPDATE: As of this past weekend, I'm also running a gaming channel on YouTube, http://youtube.com/twilplays, where I'll be doing gaming commentary on all sorts of different platforms, and hopefully doing some tabletop gaming videos as well in the future. Check that out, if you're interested!

I actually liked the previous hosts as well. They were a large part of the reason I wanted to be a on XDA TV in the first place. I have to thank them for the foundation they helped build for the channel, and I hope that I can continue to do it justice in the coming days/weeks/months/whatever until people get tired of watching me.
You are one awsome host!!!! I have a little more info every time I watch your videos.........like the Molecular structure of Caffeine

Thanks, Quinny! I was trying to upload it to the minecraft.net profile page, yes. Tried just a downloaded one from one of the referenced minecraft skins sites, and then one that I edited myself, and no dice either time. I also went through and did the migration to the Mojang account thing, and tried uploading afterward. No luck.
Definitely seems that the servers are just having issues. I'll try again later today and see if it works.
Jordan, since I see you are a linux guy, could you please do a video about NANDROID for the HTC Touch HD (WinMo phone) which is on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1914723 ??
Maybe you could talk a little bit about the ROM and possibly help on our biggest problem to make this ROM a daily driver: Wifi. The problem is kernel related, and all functions work on the SD builds, which run by executing Handheld Reverse Engineering Tool (or HaRET). Of course, with a NAND ROM, we would boot up Linux right away!
I know it's Gingerbread only, and the kernel is only a .27, but everyone is waiting for a fully functional ROM for this device. Maybe later we could upgrade kernel and, who knows, maybe moving to ICS.
I'm not asking for a whole new video about this, just asking you to talk about it when you report the news (which I think is every week).
Thank you for reading,

SDK looking closer

I just received an email from Google and hopefully this means the SDK release is on the horizon.
The Chromecast team is hosting a two-day hackathon for developers to test-drive the upcoming release of the Google Cast SDK. Our engineers will be available to share changes from the developer preview, discuss best practices, and answer any questions.
Event Details:
Date: December 7-8, 2013
Location: Googleplex, Mountain View, CA
Registration is a two-step process. Anyone can register, but as we can only accommodate a limited number of attendees, priority will be given to those developers who have experience with the Google Cast Preview SDK. Please sign up before November 25, 2013.
Thanks for your support!

I'm waiting to see what is going to happen with that hackathon event, the SDK, whitelisting.
If there's nothing concrete before January, I'll release a version of BubbleUPnP that works with KyoCast.
I know it sounds like an eternity but it is as painful for developers than it is to users (totally left in the dark).

I believe after this hack a thon having root or not might not matter anywho. It might just open the flood gates to a variety of apps. I also read an article that Andy Ruben is heading up a new project to replace Google TV. Google TV has been a fail and I think the chromecast is just the tip of this new project that will come early next year. I will try to find the article. No matter whether you agree or disagree give it till the first of the year and will see a clearer future of the chromecast.

Haven't seen any news out from the Hackathon yet, maybe they have signed NDA not to mention anything today or during the hackathon.
If anyone spots anything, report back
From I understand, SDK release is the least of the problems. I'm betting most of the people we would want to have access to it do (Like Koush)
it's the Whitelisting that we need to see go away, if that happens the floodgates will open for Chromecast!
I'm hopeful that with the SDK being available they will HAVE to remove the whitelisting so the Devs who have the SDK can test their code.
And in regards to Koush's G+ post about Mirroring, If it's in the AOSP it won't be long before we see Custom Roms implement it even if the Manufacturer doesn't (provided it doesn't require any Kernel rewriting.).
So as far as I'm concerned it's a good day for Chromecast.

Yes the whitelisting is the real issue. Unfortunately I think it is going to stay with Google having god powers on who lives and who dies.
Or in short, pulling an Apple.

Maybe but I don't see how that is practical from a management POV...Are they going to add every project a Dev (they have given SDK access to) has created to the whitelist so he can test and work?
Seems much easier thing to manage via the Play Store itself or via a Blacklist as opposed to a Whitelist.
Unless the SDK comes with some DevMode unlocker for a unit that bypasses the whitelist it would be impossible to develop apps wouldn't it?
And if they had that in the SDK then you know it wouldn't take long for that to get out to the masses and defeat the whole purpose and plan of the whitelisting.
I agree it might stay for as long as the SDK is Invite only but once it goes public that whitelist kind of has to go away with it.
As I see it the problem won't be google but the content producers/providers refusing to support it the way they avoided support on GoogleTV. (even broke it in some cases)
Where Google may have to Apple us is on Apps that might make those content provider apps work despite their wishes against it.
But still a whitelist isn't manageable to stop that, a Blacklist maybe but not a whitelist.
I think they really don't have a choice. It's got to remain somewhat locked down, otherwise they won't get studio support
Just look at windows media center for example and a counterpart xbmc.. Xbmc will NEVER get full cablecard support because it's open source.

Well that has more to do with the Cable Company contracts with the networks than the Studios truth be told. It does VARY based on the studio however, Some shows the Network has the right to give, other shows (like Sports) they do not.
Thats why some shows are blacked out on those Cable Company Apps and will never be available via the Network provided apps either.
I'm in the TV Business and I can tell you it is a wet mess right now. Has no idea what it wants to be. It wants the extra views because it knows it can hook you into watching the shows you might have missed but it still wants to make money off the Cable companies subscriptions and STILL makes the majority of it's money via Advertisement. None of which is conducive to Net or Streaming.
Truth is they are LESS concerned with you seeing the product (or How) as they are with being able to TRACK how many saw it so they can keep those other business models rolling in dough. If they can track you they can count you as Viewers which brings up the Ad Dollars when it's time to sell.

[RELEASE] Audiour for Chromecast (beta)

I'm not allowed to post a direct link yet, so you'll have to search for "Audiour for Chromecast" on the Play Store or Github.
What is it?
Audiour is a free, open, and anonymous audio sharing platform that let's anyone quickly and easily share files without any hassles like forcing you to create an account or wade through banner ads.
Audiour for Chromecast is an beta-release app for Android that let's you explore interesting content on Audiour and play them either on your phone or tablet, or send them to your TV using a Chromecast device. You can also share content with friends, which plays instantly if they also have the app installed.
It's built using Audiour.com's public API and the source code is available on Github.com
How do I use it?
At the moment, the Chromecast functionality only works if you either have your Chromecast rooted with Kyocast installed, or it's white listed and you can upload the receiver to your white listed URL. Instructions to setup the receiver can be found on Github or in the app's settings screen.
If you just want to playback files on your local device, everything should work as expected.
Wouldn't it be cool if it did...
Why yes, I agree that feature sounds fantastic. I'm extremely open to feedback/suggestions/criticism/praise and would love to hear from you. You can email me at [email protected] and I will try to respond ASAP. Also, if there are any features you'd love to see, let me know. Also, I will gladly take a look at pull requests if you want to contribute.
I have plans to support uploading music shortly, for now just go to Audiour.com, it's nice and responsive and very mobile friendly. I'm also working with the site's founder to add the ability to save a list of your favorite tracks.
Very nice to see this released to the public.
Good work and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future! Definitely going to have a play around with this.

I want to re-iterate that I definitely appreciate any feedback and if there's anything you think could be changed or improved, I will definitely look into it.

cant wait to play around with this.

Funny coincidence -- I wrote that article on the Nexus 5. I came into the forum looking for more hardware hacks like the one where you drill holes into the back of the Nexus 5, since I just broke my screen and was wondering if there was anything else I could tinker with while my case was open to make the N5 better. Couldn't find anything, but was happy to see someone shared my story.
Then, I saw @OuncE718's warning about the site I work for.
All I can say is that I stand by my reporting. My stories are factual, and trustworthy. I strive to adhere to the Society for Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics. (sorry for being long-winded, but I just want to start a dialogue).
I presented the facts as they appeared in that Google forum, and informed readers who didn't know about that particular battery life issue, as well as the Google's awareness of the issue -- and the project manager's comments on the matter.
The reason I didn't provide a timeline is because Google refuses to give a timeline for the fix -- it will likely appear in the 4.4.3 or a future release of Android. However, rather than speculating on that, I presented the facts. The truth is, Google doesn't know exactly when they will fix it.
Since I am in contact with Google's media relations, I can sometimes get answers to questions. More often than not, I am writing about something that Google can't talk about, like a future release, and they will not respond. However, especially when it considers issues that have not been brought to their attention, they will reach out to me and provide a statement. I would appreciate it if everybody here considered me a resource. The reason that I became a writer was to provide a public service when I can.
I want readers to be able to read my stories, and have some faith that I am doing my best to inform them truthfully.
If anyone has something newsworthy they would like to talk about, questions (or criticisms) about one of my stories, or a tip for something that they think would make a good story, I suggest you reach out to me on Twitter (@TommyLikey) or via email. Use my first initial (my name is Tom), then a period, then halleck at ibtimes dot com.
I write for the tech team. We strive to do good work, and I can't answer for the organization as a whole, but I can tell you that in my experience, it is filled with smart people who are trying to turn a newer news organization into something that we, and you our readers, can be proud of.
I am interested in your thoughts, concerns and criticisms.

I never discredited you but I definitely discredited the site you work for. In my experience ibtimes has made a good amount of useless articles. There has been nothing credible that I have read from ibtimes.
Androidpolice.com has been way more credible in my experience. Maybe it's your colleagues that have written these useless articles. Idk

Well, I apologize for those useless stories. I would just say, feel free to discredit me if I am doing wrong. The reason I put the link to that message board in the story was to provide a source for the story. Let me know if anybody here has any ideas or questions, and know that I and my team are striving to be a reliable source for news.
If you have a problem with a story, you can (almost) always reach out to the reporter.
