For me, it seems to be a major pain to switch between phones. Actually, it isn't an issue to switch back to the HTC One. But when I want to switch back to the EVO 3D, it returns an error...
Sorry, allow me to clarify. When you log in to your Sprint account, and you scroll down a bit (depending on your screen resolution, no scrolling down may be needed lol) and you see your phone info, how much 3G data you've used and how many texts have been sent/received for the current billing cycle. On the right of that, there's a drop-down menu and I select "Activate a new phone". It takes me to the next page which has a picture of the HTC One on the left, and the Evo on the right, which is the phone I want to re-use again for texting/data, and below these pictures are a list of warnings and things that need to be known (like pictures/SMS need to be backed up, blah blah) and then I press "Continue" at the bottom. And then it gives me this error:
"This page is no longer available. To complete your activation, you'll need to start over. If you have questions about your swap, please review your confirmation email.
You may also return to My Sprint."
I'm sick of having to e-mail [email protected] every time I want to do this. Is there not a way to do this on my own without contacting them? *sighs* Was much easier with GSM phones, just have to take out the SIM and then put it in another GSM phone and I'd be good to go (after rebooting of course.)
A lot of issues are due to incompatible SOCs Sprint uses to attach the certain kinds of phones onto the account. It is usually a smooth transition using the website, especially if going from an alike phone to an alike phone (Wimax capable -> Wimax capable; blackberry -> blackberry). But often times when going from a LTE device to any other device not capable of LTE requires adjusting SOCs on the account, which the website unfortunately has a hard time doing.
But that's when you either call in and have them do it over the phone or easily open up a chat session. They'll get it done for you!
Thanks \m/.
Instead of making another thread, I thought I'd ask something else in here.
It's related to selling the HTC One with an active Sprint account.
What happens if I sell the HTC One, and that new owner tried to activate it on his network but it would return an error saying that it's already active on the first owner's account? (mine)
Does that mean as soon as I sell the device, I have to cancel Sprint service and use that money to pay for the ETF so that it becomes neutral with a clean ESN?
What about the SIM card in the phone? Do I take it out or just leave it in there? I need to know these things before I go ahead and sell the phone..?

I ported to T-Mobile, and have this perfectly good Sprint HTC One with 7 or 8 cases but didn't realize that I can't sell it on swappa if it has a bad ESN (The point is to use the money from selling the phone to pay off the remaining balance so that it gets a clean ESN) so I wonder if there are other places to sell the phone because I'm not having much luck on Hardforum or Anandtech forums despite having 119 positive Heatware evaluations.

So, being an Android nut, I've obviously drooled over moving to the N1 from my G1. However, the pricing is lame (as it always will be more expensive to current customers...) and eventhough I've been a customer for 10 years, I'm not going to get less than their current pricing.
Now the interesting part: Family is ditching their cell carrier, and father wants a G1 after having witnessed my G1s sheer awesomeness thanks to Cyanogen. So, would I run into any weird problems from him getting pricing for new customer on the N1, and me tossing him my G1 and swapping sims? Any difference in data plan? Are there any device id sweeps like what rogers did to identify people without the 911 patch?
Or would this simply be a convenient and brilliant solution for each of us, as we both get what we want?
Thanks all!

No clue, huh? His current service ends in a few days, sure would be nice to have an answer!
yeah that's a legit plan. no problems.
I did this with my G1 when the mytouch came out. But FYI, they will find out that your dad is using a G1 on an N1 plan based on IMEI. But they don't seem to care.
I did a similar thing when the HD2 was released. At the time I had a Touch Pro 2 and opened up a "new line" with TMobile. Once I received the HD2, I swapped the SIMs to use my current number on my new device ... plan just carried over to the new device and no other configuration required.
Then I traded the HD2 for an N1, swapped the cards again with no issues.
I think you will be fine.
Thank you much, figured as much, just better to make sure!

Not at all. They don't care as long as they make a sale or money. If you dad is trying to get a new line. Then just use his new customer credit and get and N1, then toss him the G1. Toss your sim and your good to go.
Thats the one good thing i love about GSM, you get buy a phone from someone or online and just pop your sim in and start using it.
My brother wanted an Iphone but still had 1 year left on his contract. My mom was up for a renewal. We went to the store, told them that my brother wants to use my moms renewal to get himself an iphone. They said no problems. To them, she just renewed her line for another 2 years and you guys swapped phones.
The only downside is, Does your dad know or care that your screwing him out of a BADASS phone? LOL
Might want to read the terms of service regarding the N1 my roommate found that for a certain amount of time you cannot swap the sim card otherwise you will be assessed that $350 charge. Google states it must remain on the number that was associated with the phone at the time of purchase.
Haha, yes, dad doesn't like the idea of a virtual keyboard. So he's fine being screwed out of it
As for that contract, happen to have a link? I just (painfully) read the Tmo ones on the order site and didn't see anything, but none of the ones I found were N1 specific

I don't think this is true.
It says that you cannot lower the plan on the line that comes with the n1 or you will be charged that. I definitely did exactly what the OP is trying to do and have had absolutely no problems.

yep, found the N1 agreement that was brought up, and its the usual no plan modification agreement thing. Perfect! Certainly not worried about paying tmo's rates.
There is no defference between the N1 data plan, and the G1 data plan. They are both on the same Android Data Plan. Doesn't matter what android device you use. You could use a diff android phone every day and not had any negative effect. It is all legal.
Hey Hummeroid,
I was thinking that you should do this quickly before the mytouch slide comes out. your dad might like it more than the g1. then you'd be screwed. just watching your back buddy
If I can get one quick answer for how many times I might be torn apart for asking that would be great. Friday I added a new line to my family plan to get the evo. I am trying to put my hero running fresh 2.1.2 on another line that is one my account. I got it at Radio Shack and they had no idea what they were doing and screwed up my account. After a day and a half I finally got the accounts switched and when I activated the 3g wont come on the hero. I have all needed codes and have spent about 7 hours total trying to get it working. I am thinking about flashing back to stock but don't want to if not needed. Any help or at least a direction to be pointed. All else fails, I'm going to the sprint store.
Try it. Use the 2.1 ruu .exe in the 2.1 root guide. DONT DONT DONT accept the OTA when you boot or you can't reroot. Use the UNREVOKED.apk to one click root again.

Yeah, I'm thinking i was cause where I bought it. The people I got it from RadioShack had no idea what they were doing. They thought I was crazy when I asked them to switch some esn's around. When I talked to sprint they said radioshack had been screwing up alot of accounts. So if are buying from there, have them do nothing but sale you the phone and activate it. Heading to sprint, quick question, if I go in there with a rooted hero will they trip?

Usually they're dumb enough to believe you when you say "Oh, it's an app I found"

This has nothing to do with the phone being rooted.
FYI indirect dealers like radio shack don't have the full ability to switch around esns among lines on an account.
Basically three things have to happen:
first you have to free up existing phones on existing lines. (only sprint can really do this, save for doing an upgrade)
second you have to change the account to reflect the new phones on the new lines. (indirect dealers CAN do this once the line is freed up)
third: you have to initiate either an auto ota programming, or use unlock codes to edit the mobile identification number and your mobile directory number (these are both usually your phone number, but sometimes the MDN is not) Again, only sprint can do this as they have the unlock codes.
Your RS rep probably didn't realize this, and only changed around your account as needed. Now, true, they should have just called Sprint and made sure, or had you make a call on the hero to make sure it was working right... but let's be fair, I'll bet at some point in your life you made a mistake where you thought you knew what you were doing and it turns out you didn't.
Line switches like this aren't common requests at indirect dealers. They mainly handle new account and upgrades.
I work at a Radio Shack and we regularly switch lines around like that, we do have to call it in to Sprint though. As with anywhere it's rarely the company and more the person working that's stupid.

I sell att, verizon and tmobile for costco. I sell a lot of phones, but I've never sold a phone and sent the customer away with out the phone working and them to figure it out themselves. I usually reward salesman that overachieve and work for their commission by buying as much as i can. On the other hand I don't like to give credit that doubt know about what their selling. In other words, know what your selling, I always do and I've sold just about everything.

Apologies if this has been addressed but I have been trying on and off to get this going all week now with no luck.
A friend sold me a "dead" AT&T Galaxy Tab for a good price that he got from someone at work who tried to flash it to make voice calls.
The Tab starts up with the Samsung GT splash and plays a little melody but shows no video at all. All I can get it to do is show the phone--yellow triangle + exclamation point--PC screen. It will power off if the power button is held down.
I assume it's the victim of a bad flash but I don't know if it's truly bricked or not--I am new to Samsung ROMs and GSM devices in general.
Perusing the forums here revealed Roto's stock AT&T firmware as well as the links to Odin 1.7 and Heimdall 1.1.1. I assume I need to do a full reflash of this thing but I didn't want to get too adventurous out of fear of making the problem worse than it is already so I haven't tried to flas anything yet. I fiddled around and got the proper drivers installed from Samsung and Odin shows the yellow box on the far left.
I am fine with getting this thing back working on AT&T stock firmware for now. I will then play with it and if I like it, I'll look at getting more adventurous with ROMs on it like Overcome or CM7.
Many thanks!!!
It can be recovered.
Get Odin from samfirmware.com, find the p1_hidden.pit (its in the forums somewhere) and download a Roto rom and flash them
That should bring the life back into your tab.
Sent from inside a whale.
This happened with me as well. For some reason odin was failing, only took me 30min to turn the tab off and on for it to work with odin

Well, after a bit of fiddling with the Tab and Odin, I am glad to say I got this sucker re-flashed. Whew! Time to start playing with it.
Quite impressive little device, I must say, especially for what I paid for it. MANY thanks to Ganj for the quick advice.
One more quick question:
I'm not an AT&T user and this thing didn't come with a SIM card. Can I just buy a regular AT&T 3G SIM from E-Bay (for a buck or whatever) or does this one require a specific prepaid and/or data-only AT&T SIM? Can I just activate a regular AT&T SIM under a prepaid plan on AT&T's web site?
I will use it on wi-fi 99.9% of the time and have no interest in using the Tab for Texting or voice regardless of ROM, but it would be nice to have 3G data "just in case" while traveling. Thanks again!

I use t-mobile, so I can't speak 100% on the AT&T topic, but yes, all you would need to do is take it to AT&T, or the website, and activate a data plan for it.
Good buy, and even better buy now that you got it working. Good stuff, great to hear stories like this.
Just because I'm curious, what did you pay for it?
Yup, thanks again to everyone for helping me figure this one out.
I was originally planning on waiting for something like the HTC Flyer or a 7 "next-gen" tablet running Honeycomb but when this offer came along I just could not pass it up, as the asking price was just $250 "as is" and the unit is in mint condition cosmetically and included the charger and USB cable. I popped in one of my spare microSD cards and after getting this thing reflashed, I am all set!
I love the Galaxy Tab's formfactor, even more so than my Nook Color (which is now gonna go up for sale soon), so I figured I'd take a chance on a supposedly bricked device. And I'm glad I took that chance, as it let me "graduate" to a GT from the NC.
just a warning: there have been reports of non tab sims (ie users putting the sim from their galaxy s into the tab) being forced to pay for the data they use on the tab. how do they know? roumers say IMEI

T-mobile just prevents data usage if the IMEI doesn't match the data plan. Not sure about at&t, but seems doubtful... Now if your APN isn't right you can encounter extra fees...

Saw one of these units for sale. The seller said that the service center told him that the board needed replacement. Is this true or can it just simply be reflashed using the instructions above? Thanks.
it very well may..
you'd have to see if it at least turned on, in any mode. water damage could cause board damage for instance.
It may be a locked bootloader and your friend tried to flash it.
Look at my other posts, I hax to have tje maonboard replaced!! Fortunately the service centre changed it under warranty

The pictures show that it's turned on. It just has the PC to Triangle with an exclamation point to a Phone display. So it's promising right?
Hey guys, this is kind of a response to Nexus 4 confirmed working on prepaid AT&T tablet dataconnect plan, but it also is kind of a guide in- and of- itself. I'm not trying to steal a thread or anything, please go to that thread and read the original post, it's very helpful. The responses are helpful too. If making a whole new thread is in bad taste I apologize, if a mod wants to close/delete this thread that's ok. Credit goes to ctowne for making that thread and finding out/testing that the N4 works on the Dataconnect plan.
I decided to take the plunge and do this. I haven't completed it yet, but I'm in the process. I kind of wanted to make a step-by-step guide or walkthrough for what I personally did to get this working for anyone considering this. Basically exactly what was needed to go from AT&T's GoPhone prepaid service to using the Dataconnect tablet plan and VoIP. Well, what I did anyway. I will update when I get over obstacles and whatnot, also, when I do/don't get it fully working.
Back-story: About 2 months ago, I bought my Nexus 4. I was previously on Verizon and had to switch carriers, getting a new number. I decided to go with AT&T's GoPhone service for $50/mo for 1gb of data and like 250 minutes. Then I found that thread and was interested, but debated whether to go through the process of porting my new number to Google Voice, spending the $20, waiting for it to take effect, potentially being without a phone for a few days, etc. or to get an entirely new number and tell everyone I know that I got a new number (again!).
Two days ago, I decided to go with the porting the number to Google Voice. My situation is actually unique in this. When I was on Verizon, I was actually on a plan with my family. I am almost 24 years old and decided it's about time I start paying for my own cell-phone bill. That, coupled with the fact that I needed to switch in order to use the awesome Nexus 4. Due to a mix-up in "upgrading" devices, we found out that my line was locked in for close to two more years. Basically my younger sister took "my" upgrade, locking my line in (that's how they get you, and why I will never sign a contract with a cell-phone company). After calling Customer Service, we figured out that we can "suspend" my line, free of charge for 6 months, we just have to call in to do it again after 3 months (standard increment of time they "suspend" lines). 6 months is the magical number we needed because then a different line is cleared of a contract, and with some fiddling, we can basically drop that other line, switch the number to my old line, thereby dropping my line more-or-less.
The CSR for Verizon we talked to said they don't just suspend lines for no reason. Apparently it's mainly used for stuff like troops being deployed overseas, they will suspend their line to kind of cut them some slack. The CSR said they were willing to do that because my parents have been loyal Verizon customers since like 2004 or so. Point is, I don't think it would hurt if someone tried to call in and get a nice CSR to suspend their line for 3 months. Worst they will do is say no. Just a possible option for anyone locked in a contract.
Anyway, my old line wasn't suspended yet, so I decided to port my old number. The guides are all correct.
1. First, request the port in Google Voice. You will need your Verizon, or whatever carrier you have, account credentials, so have those handy (I have never ported a number before, I didn't know that).
2. Right after that, go to Verizon's site and request a new phone number for that line. That actually didn't work for me, so I had to call in. It was a 10 minute call with a machine to do so, but was also free. The process will take exactly 24 hours. Seriously. I don't know why it's exactly 24 hours, but it is.
Once I got the email that it was done the next day, I called my other phone and it worked. I can't vouch for SMS, I didn't think to try and I'm at work right now with just my Nexus. I can try it later today.
That's where I am right now. I plan on going to my local AT&T store without a tablet (obviously) and try to get a SIM card activated on Dataconnect, and try it in my Nexus 4. Back when I first activated my phone, I took it into the store and warned them that the IMEI on the back might not work, and they said that's ok, they have phones that they steal IMEI's off of all of the time. Sure enough, they tried to snipe one off a phone in a drawer, which I saw was full of phones, but it didn't work. After that, they tried the IMEI on my Nexus and it worked. So there's another point; the Nexus 4 IMEI works on their GoPhone prepaid plan. What I'm getting at is, I might be able to just walk in, say I have my Nexus 7 at home, and maybe the person I talk to will just grab an IMEI off of a tablet there.
I will try that today and then try it in my Nexus 4. Then I'll buy GrooveIP and try calling in/out from my N4. If all goes well, I'll post back with a cheerful confirmation. If it fails, I will still post back and try to figure out what went wrong. I sure hope it works, I would love to pay only $30/mo for service and get way more data than I have now.
*EDIT*
Went to the store today and got a different CSR. She didn't want to offer me an IMEI like I had hoped. If I would have gotten the other CSR that activated my phone, I bet I could have gotten one. Asked if I just brought the IMEI, could they activate a SIM for me and she said yes. Fair enough. If anyone has an IMEI that I could use, please PM it to me. That'll really help me out. Otherwise, I might try and generate my own.
*EDIT*
Went back the same day and got the nice CSR that set up my phone. Didn't really understand what I meant/was doing, but tried to help me nonetheless. After a half-hour of trying and calling AT&T corporate help lines and stuff, and getting transferred around, she basically said that I could just keep the SIM card, since it looked like I knew what I was doing and would figure it out. Turns out, everything worked. Calculated my own IMEI and went to the Dataconnect website and typed in the IMEI and ICCID of the SIM. Everything worked once I applied the correct APN. Initial setup of GrooveIP took a bit though. Gotta mess with the settings. Anyway: it worked! Very excited.
Greetings good people of the xda-developers forum!
After a little reading around I figure this is the most apropriate forum to post this thread in, correct me if I'm wrong.
Earlier this year I lost my phone in a cab after a night out, the driver decided to keep my phone instead of turning it in (usually if you leave something in a taxi in this region, you'll have it back with a little humiliation from the taxi-central the day after, not this time though).
A couple months after loosing it, I got a "emergency message" from my lost phone, and it went on and off for a little while untill yesterday when it apparently was taken into use! I have an "invisible" tracking app installed that will survive factory resets and gives me the opportunity to take pictures, record sound and some more.
Anyway, the phone has moved a couple countries away since it was initially lost, so I've lost hope of reclaiming it. My plan now is to give an honest shot at making my phone the most annoying device the new owner has ever had!
I come to this forum now, looking for inspiration/ideas and warning where warnings are due!
Is there anything I really shouldn't do, that could come back and bite me?
What would you do if you were in my situation?
Any good ideas of how to bother this guy?
So far I've only really come up with the idea of wiping his data from time to time..
I appreciate any ideas or warnings!
Thanks!

it will not back bite you if have retail invoice of that phone do whatever you want
Isn't it possible, even with sim card phones, to call your carrier, report it stolen, and have it basically bricked so Noone can use it again. I know they can with like sprint and Verizon phones that don't take sim cards. But I've heard of it happening with sim devices too. I would just try calling your carrier.
If that don't work. I'd leave it alone. The person who has your phone now probably isn't the person who took it. Which is why it was sold out of the country. And that person most likely doesn't deserve all that crap
Contemplating getting the S5....

That's the nasty part of stealing a phone. The Carrier will lock the "ESN" (Electronic Serial Number) so all they need to do is flash it over to another carrier... I.E. if you have a GSN type phone from say AT&T you can flash the software over to T-Mobile who doesn't give a flying flip about a stolen ESN (As a example) I personally have T-Mobile... They did try to make a law making req the manufacture to add a "Kill Switch" allowing the consumer to render the phone useless how ever that did not pass... SO Basically some one steals your phone that's it nothing you can do but buy another phone or hack into it like the OP..
TO OP: I'd go Impractical Jokers Style. Ease drop on him and play really dirty sounds (Porn sounds... moans/grunts etc) then Fry the phone... **** that guy he had to know it was stolen and if he didn't he's a fool... Check your ESN's People!

It is indeed possible, but not flawless. There is supposed to be some automation to it in the country the phone was initially lost, but either this automation failed or it's sucess is the reason it left that country. Problem is though, the idea is that they block the IMEI from the networks, but some countries are not part of this agreement/system.
I think the guy who is currently in posession of the phone knows perfectly well how it was acquired. Judging from pictures taken through the phone, the taxi-driver and the current holder of the phone may very well be related. Also, the phone had it's language changed to Arabic by the taxi-driver, this has not been changed by the new user (not that it prooves anything). There is also the fact that the SIM inserted in the phone in the country I lost it in, followed the phone over to the current country, where it was replaced by what appears to be a prepaid SIM. I don't think this phone was up for sale anywhere, I think the taxidriver sold or gave it away to some family member coming to visit.
As mentioned, I have no hope of having it returned. I'm not gonna push this too far, but I do feel like putting a dent in his joy over his shadily acquired device.
Drooling a little over the HTC One M8

As far as I've understood, in the European countries that are part of this agreement any locked IMEI number will be locked out of all mobile networks, this can only be worked around by changing the IMEI number or shipping the phone off to some country that is not part of this agreement. In the country my phone was lost the police send a notification to the networks when they recieve a lost/stolen report. Not sure if it went through in my case.
My list of options are limited to what my tracking software allows me to do, sadly (or happily, depending how you look at it) my programming skills are not by far sufficient for me to go beyond what the software offers, allthough I reckon someone with the right knowledge could use the tracking software as a backdoor into the device?
Wow. I'll be honest, I never thought them tracking apps would ever give you anything useful, but if your able to basically see every picture they take, take pictures yourself...I think that's crazy... wipe the phone....
What exactly can you do with yours? Read texts sent and received on the phone? Does it gps track its location on demand? Even if the gps is disabled in the device itself?
You said the one you have stays on the device even after restores and factory resets? What's the name of the app?
As for the locked esns.... If an American cell company like tmo locks one up, is that gonna stick over any of the carriers in the US? Basically, all 4 of them?
Cuz I know before, as long as you had a sim card, it didn't matter, you just swapped it for a new one.

Wish they did that here... though the explanation was for the poster above me... Id use what ever i could to screw with him... what ever happens good luck messing with the dirt bag

I would also like to know this app
Go the South Park route. Some cartoon parodies of Mohammed should be effective. Then again, if they are in a Muslim country they could get in a lot of trouble if they have certain content on their device.

No different than mocking L. Ron Hubbard or Jesus. All of them are con men and are fair game. Don't believe the hype.
I am very spiritual, believe in a higher power, but I will never bow down to some schmuck just because I am told to.

Bro, dafuq, don't insult other members of xda. Calling religious icons schmucks will insult some people. THIS IS NO PLACE TO HAVE A RELIGIOUS WAR. So stfu and leave the thread back to it's topic. Thank you.
I'm using Cerberus. I had the same app installed without root access/without placing it in system/apps on another phone I lost a couple months earlier, in which case it gave me absolutely nothing. This one however, installed in system/apps with root access, appears to be "immortal".
I reckon they will have a comprehensive list of what you can do with the app on their homepage.
I don't know anything about how things are done in the US.
I'm not gonna do religious insults. I wan't to annoy him, not make him want my head on a stick.
Yesterday a sound recording convinced me he was in a crowded area, so I couldn't resist the urge to sound the alarm. Which is played at max volume. The picture taken of him when he touched the screen to stop it was not optimal, but it did have a feeling of desperation to it
App is still active today
