Its a hit, but not a home run

Just got my nexis7. Jelly bean appears to be much faster than my other tablet running gingerbread or my smart phone. Yes, controls are different, but that was somewhat expected. Did not take long to figure it out and now it is easy.
I got the 16g model and very glad I did. The absolute biggest error ASUS made was not including a micro SD storage card. Yes, you can hook the unit to a laptop to upload/download ' but you are limited to what you have with you.
If they had added a micro SD, it would have been a home run IMHO.

Working towards a price point goal causes these things to happen. How popular and it seems hack friendly may end up with an application or hardware hack to achieve external memory cards.
Then of course you have the whole cloud behind you. This is a point that Google is trying to push us with this device, use it for your day-to-day things and let us (google) store it all for you on our computers. I've been using cloud services for my Music and Videos for a number of months now, I would find it hard to return to just what I had on my own media after that convenience (for me, maybe not every but for me it's a boon).
Who knows, exciting times.
Putting a positive spin on it, for those using this as an EReader every gram of weight pared off makes long reading sessions better, not adding those 10-15 grams of interface will help there... ok, ok, it's a long stretch.

Purchased the 16GB version and after installing all my games (Max Payne, GTA, Nova3, etc) I still have about 8 GB left. No issues with storage here, especially since I use the cloud for all my music (Saves about 4 or so GB). Couldn't be happier with this device after owning a Transformer and GTab 2 7". Home run in my book.

I wish they sold 8gb at the store, I'd got 8gb version than 16gb version.
16 GB would be handy, but I realized I rarely use any space since everything I do is available to stream and where I don't have WiFi access either I tether to Galaxy Nexus or just use Galaxy Nexus...

Yea..I dunno. I wish they would have included an SD card slot just so I wouldn't have to read people complaining about it. If I truly need more than the fourteen or so gigs, I'll get me some Stickmount and my 32BG flash drive and go to town.

While I agree that an external SD card would be useful, the lack of one is not the end of the world. 16GB should be more then enough space to hold movies/music/games for a long trip (even without Wi-Fi). Once you get to a place with Internet, you can replace your current content with more. And by using the OTG USB trick, you can still attach external sources of data. I wouldn't want to keep it plugged in for long periods of time personally, but you can delete/move/copy things back and forth to "reload" more content on your tablet.

They are already barely breaking even as it is selling a $199 quad core tablet. Adding anything more, and this price would not be possible. If there's a a better $200 tablet, please show it to me. Look at all those people that paid $200 for a Kindle, and what they got for the money.

This is what it's coming down to. I am already always connected through WiFi hotspot in my phone while I'm in transit. At home and work I have WiFi. As a result I've move to the cloud. Pandora, Sony Music Unlimited (Which is fantastic) and my ISPs movie service, Google Movies and Sony Movies filling in my video needs.
I understand that everyone is not me and some people can't turn their phones into hotspots, or don't have the data allowance, but we are moving that way.
The device can do a card I would say, the original version before Google cut it down from $250 to $199 had the card, HDMI and rear camera and more memory. Despite that cut down the circuit board in the Nexus 7 is still labelled as a ME370T, check the iFixit to see.

This part is probably the difference, right side missing. Only left ear to the middle usb, seems it would need middle usb to the right card slot so the entire strip goes over the bottom of the tablet. The frame (grey part with the stamp 120504 in this picture) looks to have space and the mounting reinforcement for a card slot on the right bottom, the extra needed wires seem to be in the ribbon, logically it would seem that function would go to the same part of the MB as the USB... maybe.

I am so glad I got the 8gb instead of the 16gb. I dont need or want the storage and with USB on the go I *would* be set either way. I much prefer the low cost. The days of hoarding data (Movies, TV Shows, Music) is a thing of the past for me. Its kind of like thumb drives, I used to always carry one with me on my key chain and I realized a year ago that this practice was already outdated thanks to dropbox.
And what a relief too, I dont have to wonder if my music folders are all named correctly or if they all have the album art. Its all taken care of by netflix, pandora, picasa and google music.
Google posted the specs of this device long before we bought it. The told us what would be included and what would be excluded. Based on this list it seemed that this was a perfect device for me. Thats why I purchased one. I am glad I did. My Ipad2 can collect dust now.
Mine has been all loaded up since Tuesday and it is actually only 5GB +/- not 8. Still a home run for me.....

What? With 32gb Dropbox, 50gb box, 25gb skydrive and 5gb Google Drive? I think I have plenty

After downloading most of my Zinio magazines, Kindle books, Nook books, several games and my Play store books and magazines, I still have over 11GB free. Do the Play purchases stay on your device or are they pulled from the "Cloud" when you want to access them?

Yes, a Micro-SD card slot would have been nice. Yes, 3G would have been nice also. But, unfortunately, Asus had to make a cuts as they are making this thing cheaply. It is, after all, a budget tablet and for that I think it is pretty impressive.

What's the obsession with being a data pack rat? Internal storage is meant as temporary storage to consume new media then replace with newer.I have the same amount of storage on my smartphone with a ton of dancing video recordings and have set to even use half.

As much as I would of liked a SD card, I never use the space on it. When I had my 16 ans 32gb iPhones I never filled more then 8gb, same with my skyrocket and galaxy note and a 32gb card I have inside. I think Google saved me money by not adding it since I would of bought a extra card just to do it.

Buy the Seagate GoFlex mobile wireless HDD. This thing is AWESOME. It's about the size of a WD Passport and has 500GB of storage. The only downsides are that you have to connect to the device wirelessly, and that makes it a trivial pain in the arse to have to switch back to your WiFi when you're done, and you can only connect three devices at once, but really...who's complaining? It beats the piss out of a tethered 64GB microSD card.
It works for my iPad, my SIII, and my N7.
I love this thing.

Google drive. $4.99 a month for 100gb. I use drop box because I got 50gb free with my galaxy s3. I find this to be so much better than external storage. Actually transfers faster sometimes.

Maybe, but you just killed your battery using this, so the advantage of adding storage (presumably for more media) is denied by the disadvantage of battery life. Seriously, if you really need more local storage, buy another tablet.

Streaming video does not play nicely with Google Drive. I have a 80GB drive for $20 a year (leftover from docs). It's a no-go for video. I also have 60GB of Dropbox storage. Dropbox streams, but you cannot adjust the aspect ratio. It letterboxes my letterbox movies and makes them 1/2 the screen. A no go for video.

Not even an issue. Batteries die. That's what they do. My N7 came with a charger. Problem solved.

In all fairness (because it WILL be brought up), the user interface on the GoFlex SUCKS. Evidently there is a whole other software you can upload to it from www.hackseagatesatellite.com, but after you figure out the mess of the factory software, it's actually quite simple to use.

To be brief, this might work for you if you don't travel and you don't mind disconnecting from your wireless internet / connecting into this device, but I imagine it's not practical for the majority of us.
Mobility. Convenience. Simplicity. Accessibility.
Those words represent what I expect from a storage solution - Google Drive, Cubby, Skydrive, Dropbox, etc. Nothing to lug around, nothing to bring power cords for, nothing to connect into/disconnect from (practicality says wifi switching would be an annoyance). It's there when you want it, nothing for you to maintain. Nothing to die and you lose all your stuff, nothing to buy and need a warranty for. As simple as an app to open up your storage. Accessible from anywhere that has an internet connection. If you leave that 500GB drive at home, you left all your stuff at home as well.
I've got 25GB with Google Drive, 25GB with SkyDrive, 10GB with Cubby, and 3.75GB with Dropbox. That's almost 65GB of cloud storage - I don't use anywhere NEAR that. Not to mention Google Music stores all my songs (up to 20,000 songs free!) so I don't include my huge collection. 65GB is more than enough, if you want to stream a movie just do it from your computer to your tablet at home. If you want to bring a bunch of movies "with you" on vacation, either copy them to your tablet or throw them up in the cloud. Voila. There's no need to have your whole collection of movies in the cloud, unless you've got a fairly small collection. Additionally, as someone else pointed out, Google Drive offers 100GB for $4.99/mo.

Say you go camping in the woods for a week and there's no WiFi, no cloud around to hear you scream? No access to the cloud in that situation May be plausible for the wi drive.....hopefully there's a power source

sadly this wouldn't help with storing apps and nandroid backups. I can only hold a couple HD games and nandroids before filling up 8gbs really wish i had the 16gb version!

It has a power source where you can leave it plugged in if you want. It even comes with an auto adapter to plug into your accessory outlet in your car (cigarette lighter plug). It has a rechargeable battery which seems to last around 6 hours on constant streaming. And that's exactly why I bought it was to take in the RV on the weekends for a rainy day, and to take on road trips. It's not like it's my ONLY storage, as I have over 150GB of cloud storage that it's all backed up on. I use cloud storage for files other than media, although I use Google Music, if you're in an area without 3G or better, (and many of us are quite often still) then you're screwed with the cloud. I love the cloud, but it's not ready for mainstream just yet. This device fills that void, and it does it better than anything else I have found. I bought a 64GB microSD card and micro usb cable, rooted my N7, and could only get a few movies on it. That simply didn't satisfy what I was looking for. Sure this device is not for everyone, but for those of us who want to use the N7 as a mini-movie theater, you won't find many things better.

If I'm going camping for a week I'm definitely NOT bringing a tablet with me. Camping is about connecting with the outdoors and enjoying life, not being pampered by electronics. Anyway, assuming its not me who is going camping for a week, they'd likely have known they're going camping and they should've loaded stuff onto their nexus before they left. :angel: Also, as you pointed out no power = no charging anything. Tablet will die, your phone will die, storage drives will die.

And what's wrong with that? I was a Boy Scout when I was a kid. I slept in a tent many a night without a Seagate GoFlex. I was a poor college kid who ate ramen noodles 3 times a day, and didn't have a Seagate GoFlex. I struggled early in my adult life providing for my wife and children, and I work very hard to achieve where I am at today, and needed something like the Seagate GoFlex. Why can't I enjoy the spoils of life and be happy with my Seagate GoFlex? Anyway, my broken back doesn't like sleeping on the hard ground anymore, and I don't like to stink, and having my own private crapper sure beats the less-than-sanitary public restrooms.
But hey, this thread isn't about me. It's about my Seagate GoFlex.

My camping analogy turned this into a camping thread. My point is if your camping and have no wireless signal 3g or otherwise the cloud is useless.....at that point the drive would be great to have on hand.

Yep, except that brings up my point: If you're using up your battery connecting to the wi-drive, you're going to need to tether it to... something. Hence, you have extra storage, but you just used up the battery to use the storage, and you're going to run out of batteries before you run out of media. It's a catch-22. (BTW- rip your videos at a lower bitrate and this whole conversation would be pointless anyways. Really; it's a 7" screen with a tiny speaker. It won't make that much difference...).
But there is a solution: USB Host dongle + flash drive. Delete stuff on the tablet, transfer your media, detatch. No battery hit, far cheaper (and modular), and no tethering.
Also, camping is camping. I once stayed with people in New York who told me we were going camping. We drove through the woods to their massive 8-room "cabin." Not rustic, but they called it "camping" and to them it was really "getting back to nature." Meh, obviously it's not the same thing for people from the West, but it's just semantics at this point.

the Kingston wi-drives supposedly have MUCH better apps and reliabiltiy, also much smaller, but not even close to as much space (16-64gb)

I considered the Kingston WiDrive, but it would have been no different the OTG with 64GB microSD, except that it can share files. It was only like $20 or so cheaper too. The apps are not as bad as everyone makes them sound. I use the drive to stream video and music, and I can do that effortlessly. I guess YMMV depending how you intend to use the device. With 500GB, I can rip nearly ALL of my movies to the HDD, which was the deal maker for me. This is more for my kids, than for adult use and file storage. It works great as a mobile media server.

Your right, but I just download a couple and watch and delete. It only takes a few minutes to download. Seems to be the easiest method so far.
Plus I use MX media player and you can pinch and zoom to adjust screen. Works great. Not to mention I can share movies with other people without having to drive over and give them a physical copy.

How/why do iPods sync so much faster than Android?

Hi, I've owned a few different iPods, still using the latest Classic and have owned a few Androids, using a Sony Xperia. One huge issue (out of a few) regarding music synching for me is that iPods have always synched very quickly to me. I have tried most media players you can think of, a few different Android phones, using many tests and they sync very slowly. I'm talking about 32GB or so of music. If I ask my iPod to do that, it does it in about one third of the time, no joke. How? Is it the cable? Do Apple cables have facilitate higher transfer speeds than others? Is it the software on the iPod and in iTunes?
Even if I just get my phone and iPod to copy the most recent 30 songs I added to my collection, all of my Androids would take a few mins to do that and my iPod would have that done in about 40 seconds. I want to know how!

If your Android phone has an sd card the songs can only transfer as fast as it's class permits. So if you have a class 2 don't expect much.

Ah ha - yes, I forgot about that - SD Class. Do you know of the top of your head what kind of class I may have to get to compare favourably to an iPod?
Not comparing to iPods or anything else, I read lots of the discussions on here and lots of people said go with San Disk class 4, that it beats many higher classes at the 32GB level. Whatever the case, I'd be happy to to experiment. I'm currently using the San Disk 32GB class 4 and it is terrible compared to my iPod Classic.
Also, would fragmentation on a phone SD card likely be a significant problem? Maybe that's another area the iPods win - ROMs aren't switched like a light switch.
I'm looking at audio quality also but transfer speed is the big problem I want fixed on my next purchase. I found this on GSM Arena:

Most newer iPods have flash memory which will write much faster than most SD cards ( I don't have numbers off the top of my head but definitely faster than a class 4 sd card).

Class 10 SDHC cards should give you much faster speeds.
I like Transcend cards.

Why should he do that if he has an iPod/iPhone? Why should he jailbreak and copy/paste music if he has an application that does it for him? Logic? Where? I agree that iTunes is a piece of highly polished crap, but it does the job.

Isnt that because it syncs to one single server owned by apple? Whereas android can sync to any server. Ex: yahoo. Gmail. Ect.

I use devices from all manufacturers, so I promise I'm not a fan boy, but I like how iPods and iTunes work. iTunes transfers at least one song or podcast to my iPod every second, while my Android takes 4-5 seconds for each song. I have 32GB of music and at that stage, it gets tedious! I have staring at how long it takes.
I've been looking around and did find some SD cards at class 10 that transfer up to 30mbps, and on eBay that aren't expensive. That looks like the main issue (I think), with Android the bottleneck is SD class i.e. performance. :good:
Well, I just contacted my phone manufacturer and they said their phones have been tested on class 2 and class 4 SD cards. She advised me 'not to purchase a class 10 as it will likely not work with any of their phones'. There must be someone around who has tested this.

That's probably (at least partly) all the GED since the Nexus S have had nand memory instead of SD.

My only issue would be a syncing program that wipes all your playlists created on the device, or did they finally fix that foolishness?

Hmm I've been testing Sony's version of iTunes called Media Go for over a year now. It doesn't wipe playlists, instead, it doesn't update my favourite music playlists, even if I delete and resync etc.

To me seems about the same speed, but transferring videos or movies, iPods syncs are much slower and iTunes seems to almost crash at first :/

I just wanted to post an update on my experience of this. I have been focussing on the cable and SD class too. I just got my new phone today and it transfers a LOT faster than my previous one. I wonder is this related to the chipset or CPU? My previous phone had 1Ghz single core Scorpion, my new one has dual core 1Ghz Cortex A5. I'm looking at all the pieces and the biggest difference is the phone CPU so perhaps that allows a performance boost with transfer? I didn't expect a boost in transfer speed, but it's unmistakable! :fingers-crossed:

Poll: what size storage do you need?

Completely discounting price, and discounting your investment in how much you have wanted this phone for ages (like everyone else) - realistically, what size storage do you NEED on this phone, to keep you happy for however long you will own the phone?
Note - this is not a "what size do you wish you could get" or "what size can you fit into and make work with adjustments" poll - it's a "what size do you really need?" poll.

I think that 16gb is really the sweet spot right now. If you use Google like they want you too then you don't really need much more.

I need 16 GB. I'd much prefer 32.

If we had unlimited data I would use Good Drive, Google music, and all the other streaming/cloud services. However since data usage is limited we require larger amounts of storage.

i only need 8 gb but i will buy the 16 gb version because of price stability (resale value).

I say 32gb is really a good spot. You figure with 16gb you have what...13-12ish for yourself. If i put my small music collection, approx 7gb on there, you get about 5 for other things. I never put movies on mine, but some do. That takes up a lot. I purchase a lot of games and try different apps, so having more than a handful of GB for some of these games (some are getting into the 1gb-1.5gb range) is not enough.

I feel you should throw in "would like more but 16 is fine" cause for me, I would do more with the storage the more of it I had, but with 16gb I can make due by not throwing all my music on it and also by uploading my pictures to the cloud everyday when I get home (omg wait, does anyone know if there's a way I could set up an NFC tag task to do this?? ) and by not having apps i almost never use on it

It's funny - I was thinking, man, who can live with just 8GB's? It's got to be at least 16GB. And then I went and actually looked at my usage on my 16GB Nexus S. I was surprised to see that I'm using only 4.5GB's of space. Apparently I could get by just fine on 8GB. I'll probably still go for the 16GB version though.

I am still going to get the N4 and just get unlimited data. Here in the UK its only another £2.90 a month which is nothing

This counts as "making adjustments". If you're changing the way you use it, then you are making yourself fit the device rather than having a device that fits you. If you're filling up 16GB now, then in my opinion you need 32GB. That's what this poll is about, it's not "which of what's been offered can you make do with" it''s "what do you really need".

The thing is though that I don't explicitly need 32 gb but if it were available i'd fill it with stuff that I don't actually really need, I don't need to have any music on this, I have an ipod, I don't need to keep all my pics on it, I have 120gb of home internet, its less that I have to adapt to work with 16 gb as much as i would just make use of more

The only reason I wanted an SD card is to minimize the amount of transfer I would have to do when it comes to roms, kernels, radios, backups, etc. If I simply use the cloud for that stuff and minimize what I "need" to carry on my phone, 16GB is more than I know what to do with.
I mentioned it in another thread, my phone is just a communication device. I have a 1GB/mo data plan with Telus and I barely reach 700MB. All I do on data is stream radio(TuneIn)/music(Grooveshark) for 15 minutes each way walking to and from work. The rest of my phone usage is on wifi. I simply can't play games or watch movies on my phone, the screen is just too small to be enjoyable. So data doesn't hinder me in a way to use more storage.

I pay £10 a month to giffgaff (soon to be £12-odd) for unlimited data.
Sadly, I still have a 32GB card in my current phone of which 20GB is used

Most, if not all, of my storage goes to music, and at any given time I use no more than 9gb (I have a larger library, but I only transfer stuff that I'll listen to on a regular basis). Videos occupy most of the rest, and then some games (photos go straight to my Dropbox). 16gb will definitely suffice.

Just an sd card slot. Then the whole issue disappears.

The strength of opinion regarding storage space is amazing. Google have hit an amazing price point which I think they need a big pat on the back for, but I just wish they had created some bigger storage capacity options....maybe a 64 gig model for £100 more? That would still be a great price compared to the competition
It would be really interesting to know how many people use all the features of their smartphone. For example, I use mine as a kind of media pc replacement. With an MHL cable and a bluetooth keyboard with a built in mouse it rocks. My main tv is plugged into my amplifier so movies, music and games sound great - I can't believe what my little HTC Sensation is capable of. It's really nice having a lot of content on my phone so I can play what I want, when I want, where I want. Sure, if phone networks had better coverage where I live and data was cheaper I would happily use the cloud, but that's not an option for a lot of people right now. It would be great if I could put all my music (40 gigs - which is modest for someone of my age), a few tv shows, films and all my photos from my travels on one device so it's all there, all the time. And being able to add more would be great. Sadly my 64 gig card is already full, though a big chunk of that is taken up by game data (Nova 3 is 3GB alone). I had no idea I'd be playing games so much on my phone when I got it either, lol.
None of this is meant to offend anyone, it's just my humble opinion based on my usage habits.
I have my fingers crossed Google will launch more generous storage options next year.

Until you run out of room because the phone is only allocated for 2GB of apps... I have that issue with my Skyrocket, so I've got a Galaxy Nexus now. The SD slot is helpful for music and pictures, that's about it unfortunately.

I've been thinking about trading in my Nexus 7 for the asus memo pad HD 7

It looks like it does all the same things the nexus 7 does, with the addition of a rear camera and an SD card slot. Plus I've been disappointed with my nexus 7 lately. It's gotten extremely slow and sluggish. It's nothing like it was when I first got it last summer. It was quick and responsive. So what do you guys think? Should I go for the memo pad?

Slow and sluggish isn't a hardware issue. Its software. Apps cause it, maybe even the rom gets bogged down by stuff. A fresh install of whatever rom should fix it. Maybe get rid of apps you don't use much or ever.
There's no reason why your N7 can't be as zippy as the day you bought it.....just takes a bit of work.

you shouldn't have to do a fresh install to keep a stock image smooth. other than uninstalling apps, you shouldn't have to put in any work to maintain the status quo of a rom.

In that case there's definitely something wrong with my nexus 7. Anyway I think I'm going to get the memo pad. I need that SD card slot. The internal memory of my nexus 7 is all filled up.

You install stuff, system partition gets full of junk, uninstall things, some junk gets left behind. Any o/s on any device suffers same fate. I "fix" friends and families computers that have got the same way his nexus has.....and you know what always works best.......fresh install....and they are usually blown away at how fast their computer is again. Android is no different.
Should you have to do a fresh install to maintain the status quo? No, definitely not...but computers and phones and whatnot aren't as efficient as they should be.....so yes....sometimes you gotta wipe and start fresh.
OP, you can buy another device obviously ....that is your choice ....but I guarantee a wipe and fresh install will speed it right back up....assuming nothing that is a performance killer gets put on it after to bog it down again.
Again, it isn't hardware related. No way. Hardware either works....works intermittently.....or doesn't work. Hardware doesn't just slow down with age....people do.....not modern day electronic components.

I plan to get the Asus Memo HD just to get the SD card support, but I plan to keep my Nexus 7. I doubt if the next Nexus 7 has SD card support.

Specification say "quad core cpu", but actually they are a quad a7 cortex not an a9 in N7, And from my personal experiences with MediaTek chip all I can say is it performance is horrible 100 times worst than Tegra 3 even though Tegra 3 is not really perform well.

I think it will. Storage is the only area iPad mini 2 could beat new nexus. You could attach SDcard reader or pendrive via USB to your n7 if have/will have it rooted.

Did you mean ASUS or Google? I'm not sure there was anything officially stated about new nexus though. Also I assume by SD you meant microSD?

I still think that if google would cut down on SoC and there will be S4 Pro instead of s600/s800 there will be microSD port. If not maybe someone should think about assembling a start-up project with N7.2 SD card reader integrated case via USB on-the-go interface.:fingers-crossed:

With Antutu the Nexus 7 is barely better score it about 12,xxx - 13,xxx as stock, while MediaTek archive only 11,xxx.
And also in quadrant Nexus 7 with completely stock setting still better a little higher score on MediaTek is i/o section relate that actually bulls..... because if it setup good you can get over 5,500+ Quadrant scroe as stock speed on Nexus 7 and 7,000+ Quadrant score as 1.6 but that all bulls... and mean nothing.
All above is benchmark when coming in term of real-feel when you're using MediaTek soc it's real pain slow sluggish and not responsive everyone know it's not for performance it for price it's a SoC designed for lower end devices.

Google will never support sd cards for one simple reason. Without sd support everything is driven to the cloud, thus making apps like Google Drive, Music, Movies, etc etc almost a necessity. It promotes their agenda to make the play store a one stop shop for all your Android needs. So regardless of what hardware Google did choose to include in their nexus branded devices, an sd slot will never be one of them.

Google doesn't really care about selling millions of devices, so they don't care to make a device that will 'beat the iPad'. They are a software company, they make software solutions, and they are offering a device with their pure software experience for the sake of software, not hardware.
Remember the new 'nexus' from this years I/O? It's a samsung S4, with untouched software.
Honestly, if people realized that Google is not making 'nexus 7 2' with 'better camera, faster chip etc', they don't care about that, when they release new android, they are going to put it on a new nexus device, but looking at the trend now (google edition devices), it just might be an already existing asus/samsung/sony... tablet with untouched android.
Google is not really trying to compete with apple, they would like to work WITH them, to achieve better progress, better software solutions.
On the keynote, they were showing off their products for phones/tablets on android devices as well as on the iPad. And not once they said 'android is better then iOS'

I don't know about all of that. Sure Google is in it for the software, but if that's all they cared about than why not an SD card slot? I am sure Asus, LG, and Samsung all said to Google let us put an SD card slot on our nexus device. Its a no brainer for these manufacturers to have an SD card slot. I'm sure its adds almost nothing to the overall cost of production, yet its a huge selling for the product. Google has bigger intentions for forcing the nexus manufacturers to not include an SD card slot.
Look how many people dumped there N7 when the Hisense tablet came out. so getting back to the OP, I don't know much about the Memo pad, but if all you are looking for is an N7 with and sd slot than check out the Hisense Pro for $150.

Hisense will never be updated. Will never have much of a development community and good luck with support if your unit breaks or has issues.
And how many people dumped the N7 for hisense? A small handful of xda members that you know of? You realize probably one in 1000 n7 owners even know about xda or rooting and all that. Actually probably more like 1 in 10000 owners. LOL
Anyway....as far as non rooters/xda types....some may buy a complete no name tab....but the vast majority of people prefer brand name electronics.....so I doubt Asus, or Google are too worried about no name brands taking their customers. LOL
Tho I will agree....an sd card would be nice. Don't even use the one in my phone, but could pile movies on one on a tab for sure! Tho....a USB drive works pretty well for movies.
