Hey, my nexus 7 doesn't feel smooth at all. The UI feels choppy and games are lagging, even my brother iphone 3 feels smoother :crying:
I have rooted, overclocked, custom launcher etc but STILL it feels laggy, how can i solve the problem? i have latest jellybean 4.3
Try doing a clean install of 4.3 and using a different kernel.

I personally use M-Kernel. But my two favorite kernels are M-Kernel and FrancoKernel. Both can be found in the Nexus 7 Original Development section.
You should install CM 10.1.2.
Everything seems to work and my Nexus 7 is faster than ever. I was running Paranoid Android and it was laggy as hell.

Maybe you have filled the SD card too much. When the nexus has very low free space, it slows down significantly.

Disable Halo.
If you're running stock 4.3, disable Google currents. This is a tried and tested fix that should fix any choppiness.
If the problem still persists, follow what veeman said and try using other kernels

Ok, thanks. It helped a bit but is it still possible to smooth it out more? or maybe it's just the hardware now.

Isn't this generally the same with all devices?
For example, completely fill up your computer's hard drive and test how laggy it is compared to when it had nothing but the OS installed.

From time to time you might feel like that. But it does not mean that you can't tamper with a phone, especially a nexus one.
Yes if I would buy an s4 the only thing that I would is root it just for the sake of TB.
But with the nexus you can do anything and is super easy to return to where you were.
And no counter or avoiding warranty by unlocking the bootloader you just need 3 words to lock or unlock it and of course a backup
I don't say you have to become a crack flasher but trying mods and roms will make you have a better perspective and even convince you that stock is better.
Anyway, everything is up to you.
You can always leave it at stock and wait for that much desired OTA.
Cheers mate

I only flash custom ROM's and Kernels for performance, not so much additional features or looks.
No, I don't feel like this because I own a nexus device.
Kinda off topic question: what does everyone need titanium backup for? I always see people saying "the only reason I root is for TB", but why would you need to backup your apps if your not flashing Roms?

I bought a nexus 4 because I love hacking, customizing and bricking my phone and all this stuff, I love it, no regrets, I dont want to go back to touchwiz and timescape...

I used to feel like this. Back when I had a g2x I flashed because I HAD to frequently. Every ROM would inevitably become unstable and I would find myself looking for a new ROM to flash. Annoying as hell really. My n4 is rooted stock 4.2.2 w/ franco kernel for help with battery drain. I truly yearn for the day that I don't have to do anything to a phone. Not even root. Will the nexus line eventually come pre-rooted as well as unlocked? A man can dream can't he?

I don't feel like I need to install a custom rom with this device. Tweaking it with a few mods gets me what I need. I still don't get why some refuse to mod the phone because they want to get the next ota update. Once it is released, all one has to do is flash a rooted version that should appear here within 24 hours.

I don't understand why it doesn't come pre-rooted. Just like enabling the Developer options, there should be some method needed to enable root, aside from the whole custom recovery custom root solution thing. Normal users aren't exposed directly to root, and power users who need root, can easily enable it. And... new users can root too without the need of those toolkits :good:

i took a liberty to look inside the zip that you flashed.. when you have issues later on(random reboots, etc. theres lots of potential for conflict in that zip), just reflash your rom(and gapps), no need to wipe.

The former, I saw it too when I had an S3. I read it before.
It's less damaging to your battery life compared to Seeder and less placebo than supercharger but it's more intrusive and it messes around with this that are not the source of lags/issues
Most likely it keeps i/o or cpu less in idle state so it performs better, but has a cost in the long run.
Kernels are a much better approach and frankly I had zero lag issues with this phone.

I've just flashed the new cm10.2 nightly.
At the moment i can say it's pretty good, even though i've an issue with Trebuchet which crashes when i open a directory (not important, and surely it will be fixed).
One thing i don't like is the background in Settings app (and all applications that uses Hardware Acceleration) which is filled by stripes (this hasn't happened on stock 4.3 as far as i remember).
Said this, i'm happy to come back cyanogenmod

I've always had stripes/banding on my Nexus 7 with any ROM. I don't notice it anymore now now that I've had it for a few months, but when I first got it the banding literally hurt my eyes to look at them because they were incredibly obvious. I had a Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 previously, the screen was worse and has less resolution, but it had smooth gradients and no banding.

The first time i noticed the stripes, i was using android 4.2 .
The background gradient was drawn by using some xml files in framework-res.apk which cause the banding. And there was a fix i never tried.
As far as i know, it should have been fixed in 4.3 and in fact i couldn't notice it in stock rom...
i don't know, maybe some new android changes in cyanogenmod source wasn't merged?

I feel like the device is much snappier. I heard battery is supposed to be better with it as well but I can't confirm. The xda app was never the best , now it is almost fluid o.o. or at least noticeably better. What do you have to say ?
i was told to add this:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1qbko3/art_broken_apps/
edit: I would like to add that the apps i notice this most is for instance, when i use hangouts and i'd right ALOOOOOOOT with someone and then scroll up at a fast rate, it would stutter. Now, this stutter is nearly gone.
XDA - xda app is one of the most noticeable, stutter has been reduced by such a large margin that you'd have to try it yourself to believe it.
G+ would have the occasional hickup when scrolling through news posts. Next stop would be the play store, it used to stutter a lot as well, now it's become a lot better. Just for the hell of it i compared it to my sister's note 2 and the difference is there.
I doubt this is a placebo effect, i'm even considering to make a video as proof with dalvik on and off for the hell of it.

It sucks.
The Nexus doesn't even get the Nexus's 5 launcher. I don't see much difference. I'd call it 4.3.2

Paste that into your system lib/app and install the launcher app in the folder and voila: you've got it all.

I tested it, system processes were failing, reverted back to 4.3... I tested the unofficial build from Paranoid Android then....
By the way, factory image for Nexus 4 is out, anyone tried it already? Any thoughts? Including ART?

Well, it's kind of obvious, if you want the best experience for now you're going to want to go with the official 4.4, since the developers need their time to work their magic.
I have no crashes, i'm using ART so far cause i could care less about what's app. I'll report in about battery life observations once i've at least had this thing running for a whole day.
Feels really smooth so far; don't use any apps that crash(thankfully) on ART. Hard to tell with the battery as I came off a custom kernel that was picked for low power usage. Like with any new firmware, it usually takes a few days of my phone running before I can really judge things. Got to give all the apps running a little time to muck things up to get a solid feel for real world performance; but I'm hopeful from what the past few hours performance/battery wise.

most apps feel smoother using ART, a few actually feels slower. but overall, things are a tad bit quicker. that said, ART still has some issues, and can feel buggy at times.

No WhatsApp does not work. It is stated and asked on other threads.

I know that. I was just asking before other people did. Because it has been said in other threads as you've said, yet people still ask.
Anyway I really like ART. Better memory management it seems to have when using it, and feels snappier

Buggy? Were do you feel the bugs?
I'm not saying it is not buggy, I just want to know before I switch

Just switched to art on today's stock KitKat after running art on nexus 5 port for a week. No stability issues and have 165 apps installed with no bugs. Battery life is improved by approximately 15% and performance is much quicker

It's not worth the hassle in my opinion. I couldn't notice any tangible difference, performance-wise. I tried it on SlimKat, though. I may probably give it a second try now on stock but the whole idea of having non-working apps like Whatsapp and TiBu just takes the appealing away for now.
Could this just an elaborate hoax to test the placebo effect of Android optimization? I don't understand the true potential if it.

it just seems that with time, there develops slowdowns. like a far majority of the time i press the recents button and they pop open fast. but occasionally, it takes its time. like a few seconds. i only get that when using ART. im not knocking it, because i do enjoy playing with it. im just giving my experience
