Recovery problems - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
After updating my HTC one with OTA for latest Hboot I flashed Viperone 2.0. now i try to install a custom kernel ( tried different ones) but i cant get it to install.
Recovery starts aroma, I'm able to check/uncheck all the options, but when it starts to install, my recovery just reboots. I tried TWRP, and CWM touch and non touch. I always wipe cache with fastboot erase cache. Did this like 100 times. Also wiped cache partition and dalvik in recovery. Downloaded the kernels multiple times on phone, and I transferred them from PC. I had the same issue with the xposed patch for xprivacy, but not when I installed the rom. I never had this issue before upgrading my Hboot.
Do I miss something? Anyone familiar with this? Any help appreciated

I had a similar problem with a broken .zip-file. If it goes to Aroma installer it is very unlikely to be the problem but try to redownload the file. What versions of TWRP and CWM are you using?
What Hboot version did you flash? Why didn't you flash the complete 2.24 firmware package?
Tried fastboot erase cache already?

I've downloaded the zips multiple times, on my phone and I also transfered them from my PC. So its unlikely that the zip is broken. I restored a stock nandroid/stock recovery to recieve the OTA 4.2.2, and my Hboot is now 1.54. After that I reflashed recovery and installed viperone.
I used CWM 6.0.3.5 and TWRP 2.6.0.1. Also did fastboot erase cache multiple times.
I'm gonna search for CWM 6.0.3.2, and give that a try.

When i try to flash the kernel through Venom Hub, recovery give the error:
E: Invalid command argument
Finding update package...
E: unknown volume for path [INTERNALSDCARD: 0/venom/kernel/ElementalX-m7-3.4.zip
E: Can't mount INTERNALSDCARD: 0/venom/kernel/ElementalX-m7-3.4.zip
Instalation aborted
When i go to mounts and storage in CWM, there is no option to mount/unmount sdcard. Shouldnt there be a option for this?

Try downloading the kernel directly from flar's thread and leave it in your Downloads folder and then try flashing it from there in recovery

could be a problem with your internal memory. try to do a backup of your sdcard and format it via recovery if there is an option to do this

Same issue!!

I did a format, re-downloaded the file, and still the same I'm running out of options here lol

I format/wiped everything in recovery, sdcard, factory reset etc. Pushed a rom with adb, and installed. But when i try to install a kernel I've got the same problem....

Ok I checked with a friend in recovery, an he has the option to mount sdcard... I don't have this option in recovery. Something wrong with my sdcard?

Sdcard is actually the same as your internal memory. If something would be wrong with it it would not even boot up. If I got that right you even select the files you want to flash from your SD.

Okay, so i guess that has nothing to do with the problem i cant flash kernels...

I'm having exactly the same problem after flashing ViperOne 2.0.0. I tried redownloading the zip file several times, other kernels and changing recovery but nothing has helped. I was able to flash a custom kernel fine on ViperOne 1.2.1. I wonder if the ROM has something to do with it...

Hmm I'm on viperone 2.0 too, Rom does nothing to recovery right ?
I think I just fix it by going very slowly through aroma on when installing the kernel. Like 5 seconds wait on every step , and now it installs fine....

and it did not helped, so ill try download the zip again, but it was not corrupted or damaged.
Downloaded, and...

This is my walkthrue:
Make full wipe (data/factory reset; cache partition; dalvik)
Fix permissions.

Notthing ... i dont know what am i toing wrong. I've tried everything and still Status 7 ... some symlinks failed.
But other JB roms can be installed normally, with full wipes, in classic CMW and touch CWM [both tantrums] also in stock recovery.
I'm out of ideas ... :/
But anyway, thanx for helping.
When I had this issue I flashed again stock rom, using Smart Flash Tool. After that, the problem has gone.

I had same issue and for me the fix was this:
In Recovery (ClockworkMod 5.0.2.0) go to Mounts and Storage and Mount /sdcard and then Mount /sd-ext. Then I went back and installed zip from sdcard.

Error mounting sd-ext!
So same errror...No fix till now.
In my opinion you're putting a lot of effort in trying to install this rom on your phone but why even bother with a rom that has bugs and is not being developed any further?
It won't get any better anyway.
Just my 2 cents.....

By the way, I could install Gingerbread and ICS ROM's but none CM10x.

This problem is caused by updating recovery to 6.0 by Shaan.
Noticed that this problem is not just for me. It's widespread now. Next try would be to flash recovery gamma tar from odin.

it flashed perfectly using odin but on trying to go d recovery mode, it gets stuck on d galaxy ace screen.
i think my phone's recovery files have been corrupted.
Is there any way in which i can add a new recovery file or something like that??

Flashing through odin deletes every single file on your phone. So there is no chance that CWM 6 causes this. Also i don't think the problem is widespread!
If you can get me a logcat and dmesg i might be able to help..

Sorry if my post ever offended you. It's just because the whole issue started after flashing cwm6. Im glad you are happy to help. During which process do i need to get a logcat? While booting into recovery?(haven't tried getting a logcat of a boot process before)
Yes. Flash the recovery. Boot to recovery and grab a logcat as well as a dmesg.
Pastebin both. And don't worry. I don't get offended easily!

And bring the zip for cwm 6 tomorrow.PLS
i flashed CWM 5 using odin, but that also gave the same problem.
Is there any stock recovery that i can flash using "odin"?
Aditya: u gave d link of stock recovery which has to be flashed using other recovery modes, which is not possible in my case as the other recovery modes r not working.

Its not possible to delete files directly inside a .tar file.
i have to extract the recovery.img and then change it to .tar file.
i flashed that file using odin but it stopped suddenly giving me a yellow triangle error because of which i had to reflash again.
now i have the stock recovery working again.
I am facing a similar issue. Please do post your solution here if anything at all works
That wasn't the right way to do it. Download total commander and then remove other files from stock rom.tar file WITHOUT EXTRACTING. Did u renamed the recovery.img to recovery.tar and then flashed as one file in Odin???
Another way is to push recovery.img through adb.

Could you please elaborate the problem you face and how it all started in the first place?
Since we were facing constant reboot into recovery problem, we flashed stock Rom entirely through Odin to get back stock recovery. However flashing any version of cwm would make the problem resurface. The only cwm recovery that works is cwm6 by shaan. Confused why??

Since the CWM 6 by shaan is working, i tried to install a zip through it. the zip was successfully.
but on switching on the phone, it gets stuck on cynogenmod screen(not the samsung screen)
The reason is that i cannot wipe data/cache.
on doing a factory reset, the log is something like:
Error mounting /data!
Skipping format...
Error mounting /cache!
Skipping format...
E:format_volume: make_extf4fs fa(the next thing is out of the screen) ...block/mmcblk0p2
formatting /sdcard/ .android_secure (something-something)
Data wipe complete
So this means that there is some problem with the cache, data mounting..
I also tried to mount cache and data using mounts and storage but it shows cannot mount cache and data respectively.
P.S.: Every time i get into recovery or flash something an error like this comes at the bottom:
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log...(can't see the next part)
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log...(can't see the next part)
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/las...(can't see the next part)
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/las...(can't see the next part)
So there is some recovery file in the /cache folder which is causing some problem
(recovery working is a progress. thanks adityabhagat95.)

My phone was running 2.2.1 Froyo. I tried to upgrade it to 2.3.6 using process mentioned here. http://androidadvices.com/update-galaxy-ace-s5830-official-gingerbread-236-xwktm-firmware/
The Odin completed successfully and restarted the phone. But the phone was running spanish language. I was getting an alert after every 3-4 seconds. But i could not read it as it was spanish. I restarted the phone and it went in boot loop. The phone keeps rebooting every 2 seconds.
I can't get into recovery mode but I can get to download mode.
I have tried flashing many ROMs from sammobile.com but none of them is working.

Flashing a STOCK Rom from Odin must not cause a bootloop. Reflash the stock Rom from recovery (again )and then reboot into STOCK recovery to wipe data ( factory reset or whatever its addressed as).
Yes I can reboot into recovery, but I dont think the problem is solved or else the other recoveries would also work (its just a progress)
I tried to format data, cache, system but all of them failed as it was unable to "mount" the respective folders.
I did not try d format sd-ext, as I thought it was not required...
There is surely some problem with d cache, data or system files...

I had an older version but used my computer to flash 2.6.0.0, which didnt do anything. i then flashed CWM 6.0.3.3 (touch) using my computer merely out of frustration last night. Here is the process I used for flashing both imgs in case you were curious: shift + right click in the folder with CWM img, fastboot flash recovery "name_of_the_recovery.img," fastboot erase cache.
Once again, this didnt do a thing, I just keep getting the same error when i touch "choose zip from sdcard" ---> E: Can't mount /sdcard/

[Q] Flashing kernel through recovery problem

Hi.

Sounds strange! What kernel are you trying to flash? Did you also make sure your download's MD5 is correct; could be a bad download.
Yes, md5 sum is correct. I'm trying to flash anything strange is that after full wipe and reflashing Rom I can flash anything before first boot. After first boot can't flash zip files, like Rom cleaner or kernel. Phone always reboots just after flashing starts.
Once I've found that someone had such problem and formating something through adb helped...but can't find this info again
I tried flashing almost every kernel available.

I think Rom Cleaner should be flashed before first boot anyway, but not the kernel. Are you clearing cache and dalvik before trying to flash?

Weird
Just for the sake of trying, a couple of ideas:
1- wipe the cache from recovery (not fastboot) and also wipe dalvik, then immediately flash kernel
2- perhaps there's a permission issue with the zip(s) / folder(s)
EDIT: perhaps you need to update recovery?
I reflashed recovery, tried CWM, TWRP...same on both think about going back to stock with RUU, then trying everything again from the start:-\
First advance...tried.
Second...U mean fixing permissions? Don't know if it's related to that problem, but of course will try.

Though I don't think custom recovery would have issues with permissions (since it's su privilege), it could be the folder where your zip files are doesnt have rw permission, and the recovery attempts to access the folder, is unable to, and therefore just reboots.
Try putting the zip file in a different directory (or maybe even the root folder) and try again.
In root folder? Don't understand where exactly...tried to place it on different locations in storage.

Obvious question, but the kernel is for your version of Android isn't it? You're not flashing a 4.3 kernel on to 4.2.2?
of course not I'm on android 4.2.2 and flashing the 4.2.2 kernel version
---------------------------
as for now everything's ok. Frankly speaking I didn't do anything new. reflashed recovery for the third time i believe, did the full wipe also few times, flashed arhd, rom cleaner and the kernel one by one and it works...for now
---------------------------
and no..it's still the same. After first boot, I rebooted into recevery, tried to flash different zip and what....and reboot just after flashing:/ it makes me sick...:/
Thanks to one and all. I was facing the same issue of being unable to install the Bulletproof kernel on my HTC One having ViperOne 4.2.0 custom rom and TWRP 2.6.3.3 recovery.
I followed the advice here and wiped 'Dalvik cache' and 'cache' and (without rebooting) directly dirty flashed the Bulletproof kernel which did the trick.
Hope this helps someone else too.
Got the same problem. Tried with TWRP 2.6.6.3, 2.6.6.4 & actual CWM with failed tries to flash kernel, bootscreens, themes & the 360 camera fix.
Also tried to flash these recovery via fastboot and at least the m7&m7ul versions.
It happens suddenly
Btw: i'm on an tampered,unlocked hboot 1.54

Got the same problem. Tried with TWRP 2.6.6.3, 2.6.6.4 & actual CWM with failed tries to flash kernel, bootscreens, themes & the 360 camera fix.
Also tried to flash these recovery via fastboot and at least the m7&m7ul versions.
It happens suddenly
Btw: i'm on an tampered,unlocked hboot 1.54
Any help or ideas are much appreciated

[Q] Corrupt Data Partition

Hi
I just tried flashing ARHD 20.2 coming from rooted stock 4.1.2 via CWM touch. The rom won't install, halfway through the phone just re-starts. Also whenever I try a factory wipe or data re-format from cwm my phone re-starts immediately. So I have recovery but I can't flash a new ROM.
Have I corrupted my data partition somehow? Is there a way around this? Maybe via a new recovery or kernel? My searches on xda haven't come up with much. Any ideas? Thanks.

HI, thanks for the advice although I don't understand what you want me to do. I guessed you might have meant try going back to stock which I just tried but that didn't work. I do not seem to be able to flash any ROM.
I can enter in and out of CWM recovery but that is it. My phone is formatted and wiped (excepting my suspect data partition???). So I am doing all flashing etc by adb and fastboot.
I tried a TRWP flash over the top of CWM but it only briefly flashes the twrp logo and then restarts the phone, so I have gone back to CWM which at least works.
In my CWM log I see this
I: Can't partition non-vfat: datamedia
I: Can't format unknown volume: /emmc
Any attempt to format data still just restarts the phone.

edit: format every partition on your device first through cwm, then
try to adb sideload a rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2318497

to add more info to my situation: if I choose the wipe data option in the install of ARHD 20.2 the phone immediately restarts on the commencement of the installation.
If I don't choose the wipe data option the installation seems to fail when it has finished unpacking.

I have formatted every partition I can in CWM. Recovery immediately crashes if I try to format my /data partition or the /sd card partition.
