[Q] CM7 to Stock,

I have a question, I was wondering if this is possible. OK, I have been on CM7 for a while now and now I'm looking into going back to stock now there is a way to run CM7 from an SD card, I would like to go that route from now on if possible. OK, little back ground first. I was on GMPower's Auto-Nooter 3.0 running 1.1 software version with CWR 3.0.0.5. When I made the choose to move to CM7, I made a full nanodroid backup first before I made any changes, I also did a test and did a restore to make sure it worked fine. Then I installed CM 7 with 3.0.1.0 and have been running fine (of course with the known issues that CM7 has). Now with the question, If I boot with my Monster RootPack Clockwork Recovery 3.0.0.5 SD since it's CMR 3.0.05, can I restore my nanodroid backup and it restore fine since it should restore all my emmc partitions? I know I would first wipe the cache and then format the /system and /data partitions then do the restore. With all that being said, or would I have to completely return my Nook back to stock and redo everything? If this has been answer please don't shot me and sorry for the bad grammar (I'm no English manger)...LOL

It's possible - I just did the exact same thing myself. So, it can be accomplished. that being said - it took me a while to get it back. I consider myself fairly well versed in most things android (have a 1st gen droid phone for a while now - been through many custom roms), and on my Nook went from stock to rooted stock to cm7. I got to a point where I just wanted to start over fresh, so looked into getting back to a rooted stock version. From what I have found, a lot of what you will go through depends on how deeply you've delved into cm7 (mainly do you have clockwordmod installed on the internal memory, etc. My situation was running cm7 from internal, but was still using clockwork from an SD.
Long story short - my method went something like this (after many trials and errors):
- used the SD I installed CM7 with since it would boot into clockwork.
- formatted system and data
- applied stock 101 zip I had copied to the SD
- had some issues booting correctly (not sure if you will) but ended up holding power and 'n' for about 10 seconds to get to the factory restore and after that completed, my nook booted as it should into a fresh install
-re-rooted using autonooter.
I had attempted the "interrupt power 8x" trick but got nowhere with it since it was a huge pain in the butt to time it correctly. There are lots of great guides around, you just have to find the correct one for your particular situation and may have to use one to get to point A, then another to get to point B.
Hope my ramblings help - bottom line is yes, it's possible

Questions about rooting

I have been lurking and reading for a couple of weeks now. I bought a used NC with 1.1 and used Autonooter to root it. Works great.
I bought a second NC which had the 1.2 s/w on it. I used the manualnooter process to root it. That works pretty well.
Now I'm thinking about getting into the nightly CM7 game. I'm wondering is there anything I need to watch out for with the 2 NC's I have if I do this. Do I have to take them back to stock? Can I just follow the CM7 instructions?
Any insight and guidance would be appreciated

50 views and no replies. If you read this and can help I would really appreciate some info. I'm reluctant to proceed until I hear from someone who has traveled the road before. Thanks

You can run CM7, stable or nightly, off of an SD card. You don't have to change anything on your Nooks to do this. In fact, they don't even need to be rooted. Running CM7 on the SD card will not change anything on the built-in memory of the Nook.
Look for the "size agnostic" thread, follow the directions, and you're good to go.
ps. I enjoy your music.

yeah, just follow the instructions on flashing cm7 for the first time. and make sure you understand the CWM instructions. you may want to try a stable rom for now. there are lots of battery and kernel issues right now with the nightly builds. but not to fear the devs are working hard to fix them. just stay with the stable's and your be fine. I hope this was helpful...

Well, I went ahead figuring "How hard could it be anyway?".
I did the nand backup with CWM 3.0.2.8
I then ran ROM manager V4.2.0.2 from internal memory.
I choose the option that allows me to download ROMS.
I chose CyanogenMod, and then chose 7.0.3.
I downloaded the ROM
I then chose Install ROM from SD card
It asked me about clearing caches, etc and I chose the default values already checked.
It installed without errors.
I rebooted and it got to the last part of the boot process where the word "color" is rapidly changing and stayed there indefinitely,
I rebooted with CWM on the SD card and tried to reinstall the Manualnooter I loaded on this NC a week ago.
Rebooted. Still hung up.
I copied my nand backup to the CWN SD card and chose restore.
It booted back to my manualnooter install successfully.
So I'm successfully back where I started.
Can someone help me understand what I did wrong on what I need to do to make it work? Thanks

Not sure what went wrong, but I would also suggest trying verygreen's size-agnostic approach. You keep your manual nooter and can run CM7 from an SD card to see if you want to go all the way and remove the stock BN software.

Or, if you want to go crazy, you could try racks' dual boot SD card image of Phiremod 6.2 (a variation of CM7) and Honeycomb. That's what I'm using and Phiremod works great (aside from battery life ) and honeycomb is just plain slick to use.

Help with bricked NC!

I got the NC from overstock for a good deal. I am pretty savvy technically and have rooted phones, returned to stock from a bricked android phone, etc.
So I got a blue dot 1.2 NC. I was initially planning to do a repartition and then install CM7. Thats how I started. I created a bootable CWM 3.08 uSD card. Ran the repartitioning script (from here). That went well.
Then I was reading about rooting and saw the Manual Nooter thread: this one
On a whim I ran the manual Nooter install, which ran well too ( I later realised that this was for STOCK 1.2 )
Then I installed CM7, gapps and OC kernel in that order which completed successfully too.
Now, when I start the NC, I am stuck at the n COLOR animation. Tried clearing data, cache, etc but nothing works.
How do I get out of this pickle? I am itching to use my first android tablet! Thanks for your help..

Since you are working with the blue dot, you need to upgrade your bootable CWM to version 3.2.0.1. That versions is designed with support for the blue bot. I would then rerun the repartitioning, since most likely it did not work right with the old CWM. At that point you should be able to wipe the system and install CM7, gapps, and OC.

Newby Thoughts
What's a blue dot?
I'm a newby at this but why not start with a factory reset then build up to what you want. Sounds from your posts that you've just been throwing different things at it and somehow expecting things to work. Like I say, newby thoughts but the factory reset and step by step has worked for me--and apparently many others. Let us know if you try and how it works.

Thanks gmpower. That seemed to do the trick. I used CWM 321 and also made sure I did a data system and cache format before I installed CM7. The NC booted into CM7 and everything looks great now

does anyone know when these models became pervasive on the market? I have a friend who got a nook after me (mine was March, his in April I guess) and we had trouble following the process with his (which worked great for mine) and I'm just now realizing he may have the new one...

Yes I think my nook from OS came with 1.2 stock. It had the blue dot on the box. I initially turned it on and registered the device on the BN network. Following which I tried the whole rooting and custom ROM thing.
In my case I think using CWM 3.0.8 caused the issues I was having. Switching to 3.2.1 I was good to go.

Thanks for the info.
Mine kept powering off randomly and constantly. I unrooted and restored stock, and it still persisted, so warranty replacement on the way!

nook color wont boot past "Android_" screen

I have two nook colors with cyanogenmod 7 on them
but one was never quite right and didnt have google apps on it.
I never really messed with it but today I thought I would fix it.
originally I wanted to upgrade to jellybean for fun since this is one I have just to mess around with.
But I wanted to roll it back to stock first.
All the directions I saw for that were quite old and none of the downloads worked.
I tried some one SD card and it didnt really work.
It wasnt connecting to wifi and clockwork mod wasnt working (rom manager was there but it said clockwork mod wasnt working and I couldnt update it because wifi wanst working).
I got all that sorted out
then I decided to try to upgrade to the latest CM from rom manager
but I would just give me download errors.
so I downloaded the file directly to my SD card from the clockwork mod website
I was able to boot into recovery and it backed up my nook
but when it tried to install the CM it said there was an error and aborted
not my nook when you power it up shows "touch the future of reading" then it goes to the "android_" (that pops up before the CM7 logo) and it just sits there
any thoughts on what to do?
Should I just make a bootable SD card with CM7?
(how can I do that...im pretty rusty on all this, I havent messed with it much in a year or two)

You are way out of date. If you want stock back, look in my tips thread linked in my signature. Look at item A15.
And ROM Manager is not really the way to update these days. If you want to put CM10 on internal memory, follow eyeballer's guide which he just updated. If you want to put CM10 on SD, follow my updated guide also linked in my signature.

I installed CM10.1 on my 2-week old nook HD+, following these (excellent) instructions.
Actually before that I was having charging problems - the charging light went green occasionally when the nook was plugged in, even when the battery was low, and so it thought it was charged and stopped charging.
Anyway, this charging problem got worse and worse, so I restored to the backup of my stock rom, confirmed the problem, discussed it with nook support and they said return it.
My problem:
The nook appears to be back to how it was in all but one respect: if (within the stock OS) I "erase and deregister" to do a factory reset, in the reboot sequence it comes up with cyanoboot and says something like "this is not rooted, do you want to root it?", if I click no it continues, and looks like a normal stock nook hd+.
My question: How can I remove this cyanoboot, so everything really is exactly how I bought it?

I literally just did the same thing. I was trying to install CM to SDCard, but must have gotten the wrong rom or boot image (I can't remember which decides where to actually install the ROM). Now I'm getting prompted to setup my CyanogenMod account.

For both of you, go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and read items 5 and 6. A restore of a backed up stock will restore most of stock, but if you also put a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP) on internal memory, it will not restore the stock recovery.
The solution for both of you is to flash one of my plain stock ROMs from item 6. Be sure to factory reset with recovery too.
Edit: And for you sflesch, the Nook HD/HD+ is different than the Nook Color, it is the ROM zip itself that determines where the ROM gets installed. You must get a specially prepared ROM directly from an SD thread here for it to install on SD. Any ROMs you get directly from CM will install to internal memory no matter which CWM you use.

Thanks! Sorry for the other post. I figured I would share here, but you beat me to it. So I did reset factory before the rom install, and get Cwm boot screen, then bn stock. Is that because I used the rooted rom?

Yes, the new root adds that.

So the rooted ROM 2.1.1 will have cwm installed on the firmware of the device? I realize (at least I think) that's always been the case wen you root a device, but I always associated rooting a device with installing a CM flavor. I guess I was just thinking rooted stock means stock wit root access, not realizing you had to have cwm also.

No it does not have CWM. It has Cyanoboot as a second bootloader to help break the protection scheme. That is what you are seeing. If you want CWM on internal memory you must flash it separately.
And you are right, rooting is adding root access to an existing ROM, not installing CM. CM happens to be already made with root access, but installing CM is not rooting.

I should know better than to mix up my terminology and pay more attention. Yes, Cyanoboot I think is what I was seeing. So, in short, is there a way to get root access/install from unknown sources, etc. without actually having the Cyanoboot screen? My Nook is still under warranty and, although I generally trust you guys, I'm afraid I may mess something up myself and render it useless.

Yes, you can use the old root. And you don't need root for unknown sources.
Edit: You will need to flash the plain stock ROM to remove the second bootloader and root files first.
