Hi, new poster here. I've only just started to tinker with my vogue after 2 years of suffering through WM6.1, unaware of all the outside possibilities. It's quite impressive really and i'm having a grand time with my new toy.
BUT.
I can't for the life of me understand why the data connection is not working.
I installed incubus' HTCSense release first, and it wouldn't connect (small little orange light next to the Ev symbol in notification bar:warning? error?), so I just wiped everything and installed the latest Donut. Now it says everything's fine, i can connect the modem and all, it even gives me an IP... but nothing that actually uses the data connection works; and I can't ping my IP from the outside, either.
I can't possibly be the only one with this problem, yet no thread on this forum seems to be addressing it. Does anybody know how I could track it down or work out a passable solution? I really don't have much use for Android if all it can do is be all kinds of pretty and switch between 5 screens silky-smoothly...
thanks in advance!
Vianney
PS: note that I'm on a Sprint plan, voice 200m + unlimited data, no text.
have you tried flashing back to stock windows, confirming data, then flashing to android again( either build).which voguimg.nbh file did you use?
Like hunter said, you need to flash back to the stock Sprint rom and provision data. You can download the stock rom for the vogue here or off of the Sprint downloads section. Nine times out of ten data problems seem to be because data wasn't provisioned prior to flashing Android.
this is also a good time to mention the forum search tool. since this question has been answered at least 100 times
Thanks for the suggestion! I don't suppose there's any way to save my settings/data while I flash everything back to winmo?
Provisioning might be the issue. But I had been using my Vogue on WinMo for 2 years and using data with no problem... that said, I changed my data plan from by-the-kb to unlimited since, so it might be that?
Hunter, I used incubus' included NBH for his Eclair, and voguimg-240x320-eclair-29-04-10.nbh for Vym's Warm Donut.
Kyle, I searched for a week before posting here so i'm familiar with this tool, but never could find the right answer; I'll happily educate myself if you provide me with the magic search terms.

Do a reboot and when the text/code starts scrolling push the volume slide up to get the install menu. There should be an option to backup data. When that's done you can put it into bootloader and flash to winmo. Once you know you have data working on winmo, try browsing around a little, you can go back into bootloader and flash the nbh file you're using for Android. When it reboots go back into the install menu. Install the system and then restore data and you're all set.
Many thanks guys, I switched back (after a few hours and scares), provisioned, switched again, and now I'm just having too much fun awesome job.
hi again
Do you have to redo this everytime data stops working? It was doing just great and stopped all of a sudden 36h ago. Now the modem connects but doesn't even get an IP, no data icon appears in notification bar, and yet all the options (sync, background data...) are back to normal.
ifconfig -a gives me info for 'lo', 'dummy0' and 'usb0', all supposedly ok but with no packet (8 on 'lo') and no error to track down.
Is it likely in need of reprovisioning? Am I going to have to do it every 15 days?
thanks,
V
Your data shouldn't just stop working. Have you trie a reboot?

several times yeah.
It's just not even trying. The modem says 'done' but that's it, any app using data just says it couldn't establish a connection... i'm baffled.
Does anyone else have issues using GPS on ALL Froyo ROMS? I have tried all the Froyo ROMS on this forum with nearly every kernel. I do not use the BFS Roms which I know break GPS. I have flashed back to Fresh 2.4.0 and GPS no longer works in there either. Should I try something else or remove my root and bring phone back to Sprint. I am at my wits end here as I use Cardiotrainer to track my runs. I have tried other run tracking apps and even Google Maps. After a short period of time it stops tracking my progress. Am I the only one with this issue?
Download GPS Status from the market and run it:
Menu>Settings>GPS & Sensors>Manage A-GPS state>
Hit "reset" to clear cached GPS data, then "download" the A-GPS packet.
Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, I have tried this already but it also did not correct the issue.

This works on the Evo not sure if it works on the hero. I have done this on my Evo and it works. You cant do it while using CM6 so you have to flash another rom then flash back to CM6.
1. Nandroid backup your current CM6 (will need to restore later)
2. Boot to recovery
3. Wipe data, cache, Dalvik
4. Flash the rooted stock rom
5. do a wipe data, cache, dalvik one more time to be sure after flash.
6. Let it boot up and the next step is VERY important
7. Launch phone dialer and dial ##GPSCLRX#
8. It will ask you for your MSL, feed it.
9. Upon hitting OK, your phone will just say reboot in 10 secs, let it reboot.
10. Once rebooted, launch maps and your GPS should lock almost instantly.
11. If it worked, then boot into recovery.
12. Wipe data,cache,dalvik
13. Restore your previous CM6
14. Now try to launch maps again and you should expect same result as in step 15. If NOT, then reboot and do a wipe
I'll try it right now, cause I too have GPS issues. I'll let you know later after some geocaching how it did.
:::hopes it works:::

Or you could try the fix that existed before A-GPS came in:
1) Create Nandroid backup of setup
2) Boot to recovery, do full wipe, install Sense rom (I used Fresh)
3) Boot up to Fresh, then once in there turn on GPS and go to Maps.
4) Once you get GPS lock that holds, reboot to recovery and nandroid back to old setup.
I actually had to do this somewhat frequently way back when, and I and several others can vouch that it works. Its just a PITA.
Have you tried the newest #13 uncapped kernel from Decad3nce? GPS works for me with that. Also try moving away from a lot of trees and buildings etc., and see if you can get a lock then.
1. Download GPS Status from the market and run it
2. Hit Menu button to access the settings menu
3. Under Settings Choose GPS & Sensors
4. Then Choose Manage A-GPS State
5. Choose Reset on the Pop up dialog
6. Choose Manage A-GPS State again and choose Download.
7. Get back out and check to see if your GPS get lock properly.
This method work for me without having re-flash back to sense to get a lock.
This fix does work on a CDMA Hero, as I have tested it and it's working much better.

like the OP, I too tried all the other GPS fixes I was reading about.. but none ever stuck, I agree that booting into sense and loading maps and then restoring cm6 does work but it doesnt stick long enough. I can't say yet how long this fix will stick as I just did it, but I can say that my Layars, c:geo (geocaching app which is gps heavy), foursquare, and maps all pinpoint where I am A LOT faster since I did this fix.
I will report back at the end of the day to tell if the fix seemed to stick.
I will give this a try as well. Thank you for the suggestions. My issue isn't really the GPS locking. It locks immediately from using GPS Status and flash to Fresh. It just seems to atop following my movements.

Okay dumb question, but you're not using a BFS kernel right? Because that is a symptom of it.
Froyo Hero to the rescue
No I am not. Haven't even tried one.

I re-read the first post, I do believed that I have the same problem as well. It's not the locking GPS but it is the tracking over period of time. I do have the same problem intermittently and especially if using Navigating with GPS more than 30 minutes or so. GPS signal dropped and could not track any more. It happened on almost every build, except 9/10 with Darchstar #2 kernel (come with 9/10 build) where It only did it one time. I am still using 9/10 build which very stable for me.
That sounds worth a try. Thanks.

GPS Issues
OK, I have tried Sprint Nav (both the signed sprint version and the Impaler's posted apk) on the latest Extreme Blue and v0.2 AOSP and receive the same results, the nav will work for a couple of minutes then it will start kicking out. It says "can't get gps signal in this location", then as soon as it kicks back in it will state, "you now have gps signal" it will do this every 5 seconds or so after that. When it completes about 10 of these cycles, it will finally kick out completely to where you have to shut off the GPS signal and turn it back on to start again.
I have followed all of the recomendations in this thread including flashing Fresh Hero 2.4 (by the way there were no issues using Fresh Hero GPS works just fine) and updating everything (PRL, User Data and the GPS stats). I then flashed back to AOSP v0.2. GPS is still broken. Does the same thing as above. I found the Colin batter fix and applied that as well. No luck.
Anymore ideas?
Thanks

MSL is a pass code. Its a password that allows you access into some of sprints advanced settings. With this pass code you can reset things or just change what network your cell phone is connecting to and things like that. If you search the Evo forum you will find out how to get your MSL very quickly. Also you can call sprint get to technical support and then ask them for you MSL. Calling sprint is hit or miss if the tech guy starts asking questions just let hime know you want to reset your GPS because its not functioning properly. Dont talk about it thought unless he ask you too.

Thanks for that update. It appears the new CM6 build has corrected my GPS issues and my phone is running better than ever!
Hi everybody, new to the forums and new to droid - I recently upgraded from the Propel to the Captivate and so far I am loving it. With all the reviews and forums I read before deciding to buy most of my answers have been answered, but not all.
My phone was loaded with 2.2 and when I registered it with Samsung it showed a build date of feb/11 so I'm hoping that my phone has alot of the big fixes already loaded. I have noticed that the gps code listed on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732030
Does not work on my phone, I enter *#*#1472365#*# and the last * just clears the code out of my dialer... no sub-menu, no options, nothing. Any ideas how to do gps testing?
Other question, I spend alot of time off the cell network and I need a gps that works - which app would be good to use? Searching the app store there is quite a few ranging in price, most seem to have mixed reviews. Google does nothing for me since it needs the network to pull up the maps. Basically when I load up the gps it shows me in a sea of nothingness and trying to scroll the map gives me an error 'need network connection' type of message.
Also, I've noticed what looks like 2 small led's one the face of my phone, just to the left of the speaker and the ugly logo. Are these notification leds or something else?
I don't plan on rooting or flashing my phone for a while... yes yes I know, stock sucks, but like I said I was using the Samsung Propel a couple days ago and now the Captivate - I've got alot to learn and alot to get used to before I switch things around. Yes, one day I do want to switch off of stock software just not right now, thanks for the suggestion though. lol

As for needing a GPS on without using Data there are a few but to be honest if you need it for reliable GPS, then you got the wrong device. The captivate is known for having terrible GPS and it is unrelible at best. Good enough to help you learn a new town but not good enough to get you where you need to go on time everytime. The led are the light sensors. No led Notifications with the captivte at all unless you rom a custom rom and get BLN from the app store that will light up your 4 bottom keys when you have a message.
I do have a stand alone gps, I was just hoping I'd be able to free up some pocket space with the phone - so far, it just shows a blank screen with a blue indicator and says it's accurate 'within 10 meters'. I was hoping I could find a app that provided maps and maybe help tune it a bit. Next time I'm on the network I'll play around with it and see what kind of readings it gives - even if the gps is low end, I'm still liking this phone so far... a whole lot better than the propel.
Thanks for the update, zelendel

One is a proximity sensor and one is a light sensor.
Thanks for the info, I got a couple gps test apps I'm going to mess around with in a while but, I found a new problem that is driving me crazy...
I bought a usb wifi adapter - Asus n13 (b/g/n), in the hopes of using my internet for data and my phone will not connect to wifi. Even driving around town to places that offer free open wifi, my phone will not connect. It finds the wifi hotspots, pulls up the ssid, says connecting, then gets to 'assigning ip' and freezes. On my pc wifi setup, it shows a new connection and 2 seconds later disconnect.
In the phone wifi settings, it keeps showing wifi -connecting....disconnected, back to scanning, connecting in an endless loop - but it never connects. It has the ssid remembered but I cannot delete it or reset it. WPS failed to connect from either end.
Sleep Policy is off
Use Static IP is off
This is a big issue for me since I'm on the cheap att data plan.. I've tried various settings on the pc side of things, all with the same results, I've browsed the internet and done a bit of troubleshooting (ie, different usb ports, different drivers, turning on/off services, etc etc) - I think the problem is on the phone since it does not access any wifi... maybe I missed a setting somewhere?
For now I'm going to dig through the user manual again...
OK, playing around with some of windows wireless settings I've hit a new roadblock... my phone says connecting... Obtaining IP address... Disconnecting... Scanning...
That is one small step closer I think, because it wasnt trying to get an ip address earlier, it was just connecting/disconnecting.
finally! I figured it out!!!
Just for future note.... You have to go into your windows network settings, highlight your broadband AND wifi together - select bridge... restart your pc wifi software and then connect your phone, it should start right up!

You say you do not want to root the phone. But try Launcher Pro anyways to access the LbsTestMode.
1. Sign up/in to the market.
2. Download and install Launcher Pro (it says Pro but there is a FREE version, so dont worry).
3. After install, go to home screen. Long press and choose "Shortcuts"
4. In menu, choose "Activities" (yellow icon).
5. Scroll down and expand the menu "LbsTestMode". Under this is a submenu. Choose the first "LbsTestMode" under this. Yes the main menu and submenu have same name.
6. Choose Ok or whatever, and the icon will be on your Home screen.
7. If you get this far, then you are good.
Open LbstestMode:
1. At the moment you probably should just leave Application Settings to default.
2. Under "Supl/CP settings". And change as follows:
Server: supl.google.com (no "www.")
Server Port: 7276
Secure Socket: OFF
AGPS Mode : SUPL
3. Return to previous menu.
4. DELETE GPS DATA just to clear all previous data.
5. Run "Get Position Test" on top of menu.....
Good Luck !!

Yeah, Google Maps requires a network connection.....BUT when you go into Navigation mode - via the Directions menu and turning on navigation, you get navigation. YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD VOICE SYNTHESIS from the market to get voice guidance. This a good first try, IF YOUR GPS WORKS !!
Or try NAVIGON for Android ....you can buy it but also check here www.mobilism.org (ahem..ahem). I use daily, and I think it is the best routing....
EDIT: Well...about google maps, I think you need a data connection jsut to open the damn software, so you will need Navigon, Igo primo or similar...I AM ASSUMING YOU WANT ROUTING DIRECTIONS and not hiking type positioning. Then take a look at this http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/content/android-gps-software AND here http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/
Thanks again for the updates, but it seems like either Samsung or ATT has locked out the Lbs Test mode feature, both of the codes have the same result - after entering the last character it clears it out. I did get LauncherPro and am really digging it so far, but even the lbs tests dont do anything, it goes to a blank screen and just sits there... I have the status bar at the top and a totally blank screen. I even set my phone down on a box out in the yard for 30+ minutes and nothing ever came up - using the google and stock settings for the test. I'm guessing if/when I root my phone the tests will work
I started using GPS Test from Chartcross Limited and GPS Status from EclipSim - both show that my gps is accurate between 16.4 and 32.8 feet - depending on which the way the wind is blowing. I've been browsing some of the other gps/map apps but for now I'll just carry around my standard gps when I need it.
Even with the gps issues, I'm really liking this phone alot. I havent really ran into any other problems yet
Samsung Galaxy Note is my first ever Android phone so please excuse me for what might be something easy to fix and obvious.
Basically, just done a hard reset via holding volume, home and power buttons as I wanted to return the phone to stock because I traded it for my iPhone. I was showing friends the voice recognition software last night and all was fine. However I just went to write a Facebook status and thought I'd try the voice recognition but there's a red line through the microphone.
I've been through the settings and couldn't see anything, so thought I'd try the Voice Talk app again. It loaded up and I gave it a command then it crashed and kicked me back to the home screen where it took a couple of seconds for my apps to show up.
I tried double clicking the home button to which I was greeted with 'say your command'. Gave it a command and it was fine. However once I cancelled it and went to the main menu of Voice Talk, it locked up and threw me out again.
Any ideas?? I know not many people use it and I probably won't, but I would like it to work just for them random occasions when you want to mess about.
Please be as beginner friendly as possible
Oh, and I'm running stock... far to early to start rooting when I'm still getting used to everything after 4 years with Apple.
Ok.. I took the plunge and did a factory reset through the 'Privacy' app and now it works again
Didn't have much to lose as I'm still waiting for my SD card so I thought I might as well.
However, once I connected to the market I had a notification saying I had a firmware update available. I was already on 2.3.6 and after applying this update I'm still on 2.3.6!?
Could someone please reassure me this phone is definitely running stock rom and latest update?
your FW is stock n you have latest ROM installed.
Just keep in mind when you update not necessary gingerbread version also update(2.3.6).
look to build number XXLB1, so your ROM version is known as LB1 (latest)
Thanks for that, some less worrying now. I'll see how it goes this time - hopefully just a one off glitch.
I was just a bit worried about the 'Kernal' as it looked like it had an email address in the middle of some gibberish code. lol
This is absolutely normal
Your ROM is XXLB1
Your Kernel is XXLB1
Baseband (Modem ) is also XXLB1
it is perfact n latest
Voice command doesnt work only when accessed from double press home key
Hi, i have a bit of a problem with note voice talk. i hope its ok to ask here since this is about voice talk.
I am on Stock ICS, rooted. I am a bit confused. voice talk works fine if i open the application, say "hi galaxy", activate it and give my command.
however.... if i access voicetalk by double pressing home key. It wont accept any command as if the mic is mute i have to press cancel, say "hi galaxy" and it will work normally. anyone have any idea what happen to my voice talk and how to fix it?
thanx before

i am also prompted to update my firmware.is this absolutely necessary? will i still get ics ota even while my phone is sitting on kernel xxkk9 baseband xxkk5? reason i am reluctant to update is : i have a lot of app (games) that require over 1GIG of data files. im worried if i update i will lose all that info...
can i update without losing all of this?
or one more question, i recently bought fifa12 ..i notice that today the app has an update in google play. will updating this mean i have to re download data files again?
silly Qs i know , but please enlighten
Official updated and non wipe version of stock rom won't erase data.
Play update also won't.

Hello, I searched through the official thread and through here, to no avail, so I'll post and hope someone knows what's up.
While the tethering works (I get connected to the phone) it's really spotty, I can connect to a page and load it for a few seconds, then it drops and comes back, so on and so forth. This us obviously not ideal, but further testing shows that the internet access on the phone suffers the same issues. First boot up I couldn't load any web pages on the phone, second and third (and on and on) I can load them, but it's just like through tethering. I like this rom, it seems nice and fast, and I love sense 6, but this is an issue I can't have for long. My primary internet comes through this phone. Also probably unrelated, but I seem to be getting slightly worse 4g reception.
Should add, I'm on Verizon.
