Speculation for Nexus 4 battery life improvement - Nexus 4 General

Got the Nexus 4 on release, so far it has been 8 months and never regreted buying it. Many people bash about the poor battery life of the N4, and praise about how awesome the note 2 battery is; it does makes me think twice about selling my N4 for a note 2. Before 4.3 I get a pretty decent SOT, on average about 4.5 hr. Sometimes it surprises me with SOT in the 6 hr range(attached pictures, before 4.3 update).
After updating to 4.3, like many other people, Ive experienced a battery improvement. Now on average, I get 5 hr + SOT. Im on stock everything, no custom roms or kernels. Another thing Ive noticed after the update is that the phone doesnt heat up as much, and it's this that I believe lead to battery improvement(less heat =more efficiency). This phone truly has a potential, and Im holding on to it, to see what it can do with the next update: Key Lime Pie.

Aha, and I don't suppose you could post this in this thread?

I think the majority has a **** battery in contrast to the note 2. I don't know what yoi do with your phone in that time, but I would never get such results. I think not even with uv

I dunno why, but sometimes it is awesome while other times it is not(3.5 to 4 hrs). I realize the battery life is much better when you don't use auto brightness. Here's another picture. Totally stock.

Best or ideal kernel settings for best battery life with good performance?

The title explains it all—I'm wondering what the best kernel settings are to achieve the best battery life without completely dropping performance. I've never tweaked the kernel on any phone I've owned before, so I have no idea what those settings might be. I currently get around 5-6 hours of SOT, which is great for heavy usage but with a battery those huge we should expect way more.
I'm currently playing around with majorly under clocking the CPU (Currently testing at 1.2 GHz) and have yet to notice a difference in performance. I'll update with battery improvements if any arise.

im on zzmove with profile 6, run only 2 core at 2.4Ghz and every thing seem good
phone run cool and great in game(framerate still good and more stable since no throttling at all, before that with stock, my phone get hot and lag if i play asphat for long) not sure about battery yet but seem good
Try computerfreak ROM, i'm getting 77 hrs on battery and 6 SOT!
Oops just now noticed I had replies.
I'm currently running Resurrection Remix and I seem to be getting better battery life than I was on stock, which is odd; however, I wish to get more. Update me on those kernel settings.
Also I noticed that when I'm at school the cellular signal drains my battery considerably. The signal there is poor, is there any way I can minimize the drainage?

That's a ridiculously easy thing to do, I can't believe I didn't think of this. However, its rather inconvenient. Any other ways? I heard back in 4.4.4 that there was a way to disable certain bands or something to consume less power when you have bad signal.

Well i was on 4.4.4 was really bad didnt know how too fix it.. try to get greenify if ur rooted currently havent charged my phone in like 2 days its kinda hard too kill the battery sometimes
I'm on rr and honestly I'm not getting the best battery. Like 3.5 hour on screen time. It does still make it through the day though. I changed the kernel settings to conservative under cpu, which helped a lot from previously getting under 3.

Settings, configs, performance tuning, kernal tweaks, then in the app in the cpu tab, the cpu governor option. That's where I found it and I turned it down and I'm getting better battery.
That's odd. I get considerable better battery life on RR than I did on stock. I've hit 5.5 and even 6 hours of SOT with heavy to medium use (when I'm not at school at least).
Same here, but I noticed it lasts much longer with Greenify and Amplify installed with Xposed. I lose about 2-3% during standby mode during the night....whereas before I lost about 10-15% even while on RR.
Just got 7HR and 4 mins screen on time with in 2 days didnt use my phone at school only when i was at home so i guess 7hr's is good..

That sounds right about what stock should be getting for some users. It's good to reference stock with your personal use versus someone else.
1 hour of a playing a game with full brightness will use significantly more battery than an hour of book reading on night move although they both technically have the same screen on time.

I usually consistently got about 5 hours and 30 minutes of screen on time on stock with medium to heavy usage at school and at home.
On Resurrection Remix, I usually get 5 or sometimes 5 and a half or 6 hours, with heavy usage at home. On school days, I can only manage to get around 3, which I find incredibly odd. I chalk it up to the poor signal at my school draining my battery.

It definitely is decent, but with a battery this huge we should be getting way more. Especially since Moto and Verizon preached about 48hr battery life.

You can get 48 hrs on the Turbo. You can also get 5 hrs. Like I said before, it all depends on your personal usage. Perhaps they have a baseline test they do on every phone so there's no variable aside from battery.

Are you satisfied with performance on your Nexus 6?

So I was wandering if you're happy with your phones as of right now. I've always dreamed of having a stock Nexus device, and finally I god mine 1 year ago, and honestly lately I've been a little disappointed. I'm running stock android, no root, it's completely untouched. I've tried some ROMs like PureNexus, but I switched back to stock. Lately I found this phone extremely laggy in random situations, even when not performing heavy tasks. Also the phone gets EXTREMELY hot extremely easily, and when it's hot it lags even more to the point it's barely usable. When it is charging it becomes soooo sooooo slow and super hot, I'm almost forced to stop using it. Am I the only one experiencing these issues? Are you disappointed with your phone too?
you do realize that by running stock, you are stuck with the stock cpu setup? and thats where big differences come from, how you set up your cpu. with the way i have my cpu set up, my n6 is never choppy nor even slughtly slow.. never. my n6 is the beast that everyone wants.

All devices are a little different... I'm running N preview 3... And I'm completely satisfied, runs amazing for a two year old device.
Here is the main schedule of how I use my device:
In the morning, I charge up to around 80-90%. The device is off. By the end of the day, it's normally at around 30-40%. I don't game, and don't use my phone for much other than texting, social media, and the occasional web browsing/googling.
Mine does get warm at times and hot while charging, but that's expected of any electronic device. Try a charger with a lower wattage.
All the lagginess that I've run into always occurs with extended periods of use. Try shutting the phone off at night and not leaving it on charge all night. Also, a complete internal storage wipe won't do any harm .
An amazing app to help performance, battery life, and overheating is Greenify. It is literally the only app that I use root access for (I would totally root just to use this app). I kinda use it a bit obsessively, manually hibernating every time I leave an app, even though I have auto-hibernation enabled. Know which apps are memory hogs. Make sure to keep your eye on them (snapchat, facebook, etc.).
Hope I helped, may have gone a bit overboard on answering this.
Cheers!

no, no comprising battery. but im more after performance, since i get 5h sot no matter what. i use the ondemand governor(98 up threshold and 15000 sampling rate) with the deadline scheduler. everything else that i do isnt as important than setting my governor/scheduler. i have it set to hand around the lower cpu when not doing much, then jumping to top cpu speed as soon as its needed.

So if I install cyanogenmod 13 could you help me set the way you did? I mean just tell me in which menu I should go and what I should modify. It would be greatly appreciated! I usually get 3h of screentime, you get 2 hours more, that's amazing. Also could you tell me what kernel should I use with cyanogenmod 13?
I'm just shaking my head. I've never had these problems. Lagginess?? Nope. I get pretty good battery life and I've really only used 3 ROMs; Chroma, Purte Nexus and now the setup in my signature. for the last few months

I can only speak for Pure Nexus (Especially the new build on 6/21), but it smokes the stock ROM from Google. Very smooth scrolling, fluid animations, fast app opening....It's just better imho.
Gotta remember, this phone is 1.5 years old...While it was spec heavy when it came out, time is catching up with it

There is no best.. That's why no one is answering g you.. Its user dependent we all use them differently
The phone is great at full battery. Anything above 40 percent. Under that... Not as good. Speakers crackle, CPU cores shut down and no matter what I do I can't override it. It gets super bad at about 20 percent where I have to raise the clock speed to 1.7 ghz from the 1 GHz I run normally since it is a stuttery mess that slow on 2 cores. So, for me the battery saving features make the battery life worse. Not to mention battery life is so random. I'll get a day and a half or more one day and the next not even get 12 hours. Doing very similar things, very similar screen on time of about 3 hours. The highest screen on time I got was 4 or 5 hours with pure nexus, but I'm on cyanogemod now and it doesn't last more than about 3 and a half often.

sounds like its an issue with your set up? why the heck would you buy a nexys 6 only to lower its performance to a dual core? i use my n6 every day to its max. i set up my cpu to work like a beast! but, no matter what, i ALWAYS see at the very least 5 hours sot. anyways, what it sounds like is that you need to learn to set up your device a bit better, like screen brightness.. do you realize that the screen uses more battery than any other part of the phone? i keep my brightness at about 5%. and for every 30% i raise it, i lose 1 hour sot. anyways, theres just so much other stuff to try out.

No I don't put it at dual core. It's just that at 20% or less battery the phone shuts 2 cores off.

I've learned that pretty much anything aosp based is pretty much the winner in terms of performance and stability and just overall because there's less stuff going on... Chroma or Pure Nexus is the heaviest I would go.
And use Greenify! I explained it in my earlier response...
Franco kernel was pretty sick when I used it with Chroma and I got awesome battery life with practically stock settings. I think the only thing I did was have the cpu underclock at 25%... But I rarely ever got to below 40%...
And there's always battery saving mode!
I always get decent performance no matter what I'm doing because the N6 is such a beast

I don't do anything special. I usually use the kernel with the stock settings that comes with whichever ROM I'm on. I remove bloat and apps I don't use. When I was running stock/rooted, I'd use a custom kernel but again with the default settings
You try ondemand on b14ckb1rd kernel ......
4h+ screen on and very good performance!
https://www.dropbox.com/s/t3ku0q7msavbonu/Screenshot_20160622-002517.png?dl=0
So I really like the performance of this phone. It's fast and good, and the camera is adequate... Until things go south and I want to smash it against a wall. Mostly the problems start when battery drops under 40%. While I know cores get disabled, and performance gets limited, it's just horrible. From what I understand flashing a custom rom will make things more manageable? I've flashed ROMs in the past and had positive experiences with CM. Will Cm13 do the job?

the battery life

What really is up with Android phone and their battery life. This been bugging me for like forever and its 4:00 AM and i have to post.
Like my sister had s7 edge and just the general messenger apps IG, WhatsApp, telegram & Weechat. Rest are game for toddler. But all the time the phone been with her, her average SOT is like four hours and the BATTERY KEEPS ON DRAINING on Wi-Fi or Data and NEVER flats out. It only does when in airplane mode. Before you guys days uninstall the games, in the battery usage graph same with GSAMbattery, Android system is like up all the time. So it has to do with Android OS.
is Android really just like this? Do iPhones person better?
I have EXACTLY the same issue with my nexus 6 rooted. When my wifi is up, none stop drain and BBS doesn't show any unusual activity.
What going on guys?

With 4 hours screen on time that is about what you can expect. Mainly when using things like weechat which is notorious for uploading all it data over and over again to its servers in China. Then you have whatsapp which is done by facebook which are known for some of the worst coded apps for battery drain in the market.
Your biggest issue is the screen on time. $ hours is a bit ruff on a device. As the screen is the biggest thing to take up battery. Unlike the iphone which uses a less intense screen due to its lower quality res.

Bro, you should use an iPhone and see! It's much worse than Android. iPhone have less size batteries and you can hardly get through the entire day with one charge according to your usage. Although apple's implementation of background apps optimization is excellent, but still the battery life is less due to small batteries. I feel android is much better in terms of battery.

You can add that android is still an open system which allows you to hard modify the system, apps behavior, etc.. So you can set your device especially for your daily use.
For example, the way I set my 2yo-phone gives me 8 to 10 hours SOT, which is faaaar from any Apple devices autonomy..

No it's really mostly just the screen being on. You can test this by setting the device screen to never time out and let it sit. You will notice that it kills the battery.

That is generic which means apps system api or systems the app uses. Like say the LG tones app. It uses the system BT api and if it drains the battery then all you see is BT at the top.

I'd say that you either have a battery that is past it's useful life, or you have some serious wakelocks going on. 2-2.5 hours SOT is awful. I bought my device used 9 months ago and can easily average 6-8 hours SOT over the course of 48 hours on battery (on stock 7.0 unrooted). I'm only now seeing a lower SOT with this current update to Google Play Services. And even now I still get 5-6 hours SOT in 48 hours.

I know the reason for my bad battery life. It's my signal. Signal here is spotty and if you leave town you lose signal all together. So my device spends most of the day looking for a stronger signal. SOT really doesn't mean much to me.

Ah yeah, well there is that as well. Have you tried turning off LTE and preffering 3G? I've found that helps in some fringe areas.

Yeah I normally keep late off. It doesn't help really. Signal is just too spotty. You can bounce between 2g,3g and lte in 5 min and never move. Then you have the times when the military blocks all GPS and unless you heard the announcement and turned GPS off that would also kill your battery. Then like I said once you leave town you have no signal for hundreds of miles.
Can somebody explain this?

We would need more info before we could really explain it. For starters though it looks like bluetooth is sucking the life out of your battery. Do you have something connected to it currently?
As far as my screen on time goes, im on the pixel rom with no addons and i get 4 hours screen on time

How is 6-8 hours sot possible over 48 hours? I've tried different kernels, lineage/CyanogenMod, Pure Nexus, greenify, and even tried down clocking the CPU to 1.2 GHz or less at all times (shockingly, in normal use I couldn't tell the difference lol). Never got that much screen on time. I'm not even sure airplane mode would do that. My best was around 45 hours, but with about 3 hours of screen on time. And that was with the phone being less than 3 months old.
Currently I'm on stock Android, and getting 20 hours at best with 3 hours sot. At this point, I will say my battery is shot since it is a year old. But I'd love to see your settings and see if I could get close.

Here are screenshots of my battery use from March. 3 days with 6.5 hours SOT. I keep my screen at a relative 20% or so (lower at night). I have very strong signal (major city) And I use wifi about 65-70% of the time. I also actively moderate my screen touches (yes, they do indeed matter). I turn off NFC and I don't use BT. I also actively purge misbehaving apps (I refuse to install some, like Facebook) Other than this, I can't really say. Perhaps, I just lucked out and got a cherry of a system (with the exception of my headphone jack not working with mics...Grrr... and my camera's image stabilization Causing blur at certain shutter speeds)

[OP5] Battery life Thread

Let's make this the official battery life thread for the Oneplus 5, enjoy :good:
OnePlus 5 Battery Life Thread
Hi all,
I figure it would be useful to get a battery life thread going so we can see what type of performance we can get and also understand how people might be improving their battery performance.
I haven't done one full battery drain yet as I only got the phone yesterday. I will be doing that on this cycle to see how it performs. For reference I am at 90% after about 7 ½ hours having put down at 100% and not on the charger when I slept. I had 2% battery drain over night (slept maybe 6 ½ hours) and have 54 minutes SOT (light usage, just messaging, Twitter, slack, chrome etc) with the remaining 8%. I'm not sure how OP phones battery life reduce, I know LG always has a strong first 10% and then rapidly drops off for example.
In terms of setup, I am rooted and using Doze Settings Editor (GeraldRudi preset), Naptime, Leandroid (but I need to figure out if this is actually working). I am also using dark themes were possible as these are better for AMOLED screens. I've also tweaked kernel in EXKM but nothing major that would positively impact battery.
Just to follow up, I have completed my first full cycle and can report that I got just over 6 hours of SOT over about 33 hours.
I had a bit of Bluetooth and GPS but I do keep the screen brightness as low as possible which really does help battery life as well.
I have also included CPU frequencies for reference, I haven't made any governor tweaks but that would be something to look at or maybe wait for custom kernels which I'm sure would have different governors including EAS based ones.

Yeah I definitely think so. There has been a trend in recent years of reducing battery life IMO. I had easily 8 hours of SOT over two full days on my HTC One M8 when I first got it and each year it's just gotten worse to the point now where 6 hours is considered great but I'm not complaining, I will take that over other phones barely managing 4 to 5 hours SOT.
Very excited to see how far this phone can be optimised on battery life with custom ROMs and Kernels. Good days ahead
Make sure to post your results when you complete a full charge and what you've done battery savingwise to achieve that

Nah didnt do screenshots this time. I got to work and forget that. Next charge will be a screenshot
Gesendet von iPad mit Tapatalk
The battery life in mine is awesome. 21 hours, on 4g/WiFi and 4:30 hours SOT on half battery.
Probably will last me more than 2 days with normal usage
I can get around 8 hours SOT with medium use and brightness set to low. I am mostly indoors and I am impressed. With the same usage on my OPO I got 3.5 hours SOT.
ElementalX and 4.5.2 is out and coming out very shortly so the game will change again battery life wise. There will be different kernels that will help or hinder battery life depending on how much they are geared that way or towards performance.

After 5hrs of screen on time and 13hrs of standby mostly on 4g, still have 38% of juice left! All stock ofcoz.

Awesome. The OP5 definitely looks like a good phone for battery life as we can run the phone pretty hard and still get decent SOT

Yes this is my normal usage. Probably its that good cause i dont use insta, facebook etc. Maybe i will install the instagram app and look a bit around.
Im just waiting for official TWRP to root and tweak the whole phone. It can even be better.
Pretty good battery life today

My first charge was data only. I've had a couple of issues with stand by drain but I think that has been sorted now (back down to 2-3% drain over night) so should be able to get another decent reading today.
I am however now on freedomOS and ElementalX so things are changing up and I can see there is another OTA fix on the way.bit hard in the early weeks to get through a full day without something changing!!

I have never been more pleased, I might just get 8-9 hrs of SoT
This too
I like what I see .
Pg, pls also post also when you're using data (if you're using)

Possibly the BEST Screen On Time ever?

I've own the note 9 since it's release, and I've heard that the phones need to "calibrate" themselves to achieve their best battery life, so long story short, today I got this INSANE SOT
Pretty much an hour of SOT per every 10% of battery.
NO battery saving mode.
My screen is at WQHD
AOD off (I don't really need it)
Mostly WIFI
I'm using Swift Installer (all black with accents)
IMO I think this battery is an absolute beast. What do you guys thinks?
And yes, this was on a single charge. From 100% down to 4%
Did you check if anyone got better

Not a record but still impressive..I've seen 13+ hours even on Note 8 lol. You can game SOT like crazy if you really want to

Yeah I know, the thing that surprised me was that I didn't even noticed until I opened the battery stats and checked, I watched a LOT of YouTube and even played some TWAU

There was this random one from Reddit. Of course, staring at Reddit for as long as this person did probably helped.

You guys don't have electricity in your countries? ?

That is pretty impressive. In fact it is on par with that of the Huawei Mate 10's battery life.
