Best format for video - Google Chromecast

I was thinking of saving some of my DVDs to a file to watch on chromecast. I was going to upload them to youtube and set them to private, but they don't care too much for uploading copyrighted movies. Hopefully, there will be a cast from google drive or dropbox option before too long, but I can always tabcast until then. What would be the recommend settings to rip the dvd?

i use Handbrake at the "Normal" preset to encode everything to an MP4 file type. i'm almost sure this uses an h264 codec.
with that in mind, when i use tabcasting on these MP4s, i have no issues. it works wonders.

Get Video Off Of The Tilt!!!!

Ok. I recorded some video on my AT&T Tilt with a memory card. It plays fine on my phone. Well I want to get it on my computer. When I tried to, it was in the MP4 format. So I opened it with Quicktime and iTunes and it wouldn't play. It said there was an error. So I was gonna convert it. I tried to, but it gave me a warning saying that it would have no sound, so I didn't do that. Then I downloaded VLC Player and when I played the videos, they didn't have sound. I tried putting them in Windows Media Center, didn't work. I tried ActiveSync. Didn't work. There has to be some possible way to do this. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!
Same thing happens to me. Now I just record in the other format, QIF I believe. And that works fine.
THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!
how did you even get "good" video playback?
how did you even get "good" video on the TILT? is it the change in file type that makes the video better in itself? where do you change it?
You can change to CIF by selecting it from the Capture Settings menu (hit menu when the camera is running) under Resolution. The capture format can be changed from MPEG-4 to H.263 if you go to Advanced > Capture Format.
Recording in a well-lit environment helps. I'm not usually affected by placebo, but I and a few other users have reported increased camera performance after installing the latest test drivers for the Kaiser from htcclassaction.org. It DID seem that the framerate was higher. I can't rule out the possibility that updating to windows mobile 6.1 may have made a difference, but I know I don't keep apps running in the background and the comparison whilst not scientific would be pretty fair.
What can be used to view H.263 on the home pc? Will media player play it? And is there a good reason why it just doesn't record to .wmv or regular old mpeg? As you can tell I am a moron when it comes to video.
VLC will read it

QuickTime will play H.263 encoded files.
The Tilt does not use WMV or MPEG because they do not have formats optimized for mobile devices, so the files end up being huge.
Thanks, that makes sense!
my mp4 videos run fine on wm player! try downloading the vista or xp codec pack which is available on most torrent sites
I know its old but anyway...I record video w/ my kaiser, bluetooth the video over to my laptop, convert with WM convert, open w/ movie maker, edit then post. Sooooooooo easy and no cables required!
You're all going through waaaay to much by using converters & what not. When recording in mpeg4 format just rename the files to ".3gp" after you transfer them to your computer and they will play regularly through quicktime with sound & everything intact.
download K lite codec pack: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm
it will allow windows media player to play ANYTHING, throw and file at it and it will play
VLC Works for me
VLC works for me, try it

Use a converter to be able to edit the video in windows movie maker, it takes like 10 seconds to convert a MPEG4 to WMV. (i've got the codec pack but in order to edit the video you need to convert it.)

Come on in if you know anything about video transcoding.

I'm trying to learn how to take hi -def movies in various video formats and convert them to a bluray format so I can burn it to a bluray disc to play on my PS3 and stand alone bluray player. So far I've tried to use avs video converter, avchdcoder, and multiavchd. It's definetly challenging to learn how to create cool looking menus, get the audio to be in sync, and not get any errors. Does anyone have a favorite software they use and any tips? Its frusturating to wait 3-5 hours to convert a movie just to find out there are errors lol. Dvds are easy to create ....it's the blurays that are challenging. I would love to hear some feedback.
Use THIS site as they helped me figure video editing out. But let me warn you about PS3 3.56 Firmware update - Sony has just made it so that it will detect a signature in pirated video; the PS3 will only play homevideos now (unless you know how to decode video ;} )

Yeah that's a good idea. A lot of the movies come with samples. See....I'm learning.
Edit : videohelp is a really good forum....I've been using it.
Ok so I transcoded a 8gb mkv to a bluray ISO....took 7 hours. Went to burn it using imgburn and got a error part way through. Guess I need to stop using cheap discs.

Stop right there. Both your PS3 and Bluray player can play x264 (and all profilesm too, I believe), PS3 also plays xvid/divx/h263, you BD player might too.
Most HD movies that are shared used the x264 codec for video and AC3 or DTS for audio, and in a Matroska (MKV) container.
They will not play on a PS3 (and most likely BD player) due to a lack of support for mkv. You'll need to remux the file in to an MPEG Transport Stream (.ts), after you do this they should be fine on both. I'm not entirely sure if DTS can be muxed in to ts, you might need to convert it to AC3 first, no biggie.
Well I took a shared movie and converted it to avchd using avchdcoder ....the conversion went fine and took a total of 7 hours....burned it to a blank bluray and didn't work in the ps3. The custom menu I created works fine but when the movie started is wouldn't play right. Have no idea why. When I get home ill have to take a closer look. Frusturating for sure. I can use avs video converter which is easy to use and works well but it down converts 6ch audio to 2ch.
Why are you spending hours encoding video and degrading the image quality when you don't have to? *Just* for custom menus?
Yeah pretty much. Just certain movies though. Most movies I just keep on a nas drive and watch them through my laptop which is hooked up to my home theater via wireless HDMI. It's a pretty cool setup actually.

Nook problems when playing video

I try to play 720p video on nook and the voice and picture is out of sync
when I try to play 480p video, the voice and video is a bit out of sync too though only a bit
both video is mkv type
I guess that Nook is bad with playing MKV video files for either quality, I haven't yet try to play other format, anyway will there any differences? Will other tablets like viewsonic has this problem?
Nook is not really designed to do this but try a different format like mp4 or mpeg-4

I have had this problem too. If you don't want to convert your video, you might want to try QQPlayer. It can even play avi files. With AVI files, it can get a little choppy like it is skipping a frame every few frames but it doesn't stop and start and it is watchable.
If you don't mind converting videos, I have had good luck using handbrake for windows which is free and using the iPhone setting.

hi darley, what format to convert to? iphone setting means quicktime format?
Movies
Not sure which version pf OS you're running but, I watched lots of movies during airplane trips on the stock Nook, and a very early rooted version (1.1) with great high quality viewing. No sync issues. My movies were in MP4 format using Format Factory (free) . It takes any format converts to another and can compress, kepp same etc. When I switched to CM7 recently started getting slight out of sync issues - but barely noticeable. I'm ordering a new higher class card now which will hopefully make things better.
You have the Nook now - try Format Factory with MP4 medium quality setting, use Moboplayer (free) and play with the file size. WOrked great for me. Also, the SD card makes a HUGE difference. Try a few different ones.

Chromecast playing MKV through browser with sound

I thought MKV wouldn't cast with sound?
I am playing MKV through a chromecast tab and casting it with sound, maybe I got a lucky file?
Or maybe because I installed the DivX Plugin from Here

How did you fix it? I get the same symptom with the VLC plugin. Is it better with the DivX plugin? More importantly, can you select audio tracks with the DivX plugin?

no idea what symptom you are talking about, i fixed the link in my first post to point at the correct url :cyclops:
Ok
I was talking about the no-sound symptom.
Well, I tried installing the DivX plugin and disabling the VLC plugin. Doesn't do me any good, I still get no sound.
But here's something I don't understand: if I disable both and VLC plugin and the DivX plugin (and the Quicktime plugin, and any other plugin that lists video MIME/file types), the mkv file still plays in a player window that looks exactly the same. Chrome's plugin infrastructure seems very poorly implemented and very poorly documented - it's hard to control which plugin plays a file or even to tell which plugin is responsible for playing it. I was able to get mpeg files (and other video files masquerading as mpeg) to play by disabling the Quicktime plugin, but now I'm not sure if the VLC plugin or DivX plugins are doing anything.
I have neither plugin but now Chrome will play an mkv file whereas before ( earlier vs of Chrome? ) it would only download it. However, it will not cast, only a black screen appears on the TV. Time to experiment I guess.
EDIT: That plugin changes your default search engine to "Conduit" and you cannot unselect that choice. I hope I can deselect it through normal procedure. I don't like it though.
EDIT: No joy, just a grey screen.
I've always been able to play mkv. The only files I can play are mkv and some mp4. Nothing else.
I can't play mkv's with sound, very strange some people can and some can't.
I installed plex media server fixed the no sound with mkvs

It'll play MKV's and the sound depends on the encoding of the audio. The audio needs to be AAC, it'll even work with AAC 5.1. However, if you try to play a mkv with DTS or AC3 audio, you'll only get video as the audio will not decode. It's actually pretty easy/quick to convert audio only to AAC and leave the video untouched or you can just use plex which will transcode automatically.

Surround in Plex is a little sketchy right now they are working on the transcoder as it currently (for some content) is not passing Rear Channel though the Transcoder or CCast. Plex Devs know about it and are working on it.
You should have no issues if your content is MP4/H264/AAC. Chromecast can play these files without transcoding so if you have issues streaming these types it is most likely a Network issue not an encoding problem.
Doesn't work for me. Installed the DivX-Plugin, but Chrome will still try to download the MKV instead of playing it.
i know a software called idealshare vdieogo in one post of the forum.
it can easily helps me to convert all kinds video like mkv, avi, mp4, mov, flv and etc to chromecast supported format.
then i can easily stream the converted local video from computer to chromecast for play on tv by the following way:
Install Google Chrome Cast Extension
Open chrome or a new tab, and then connect your chrome browser to Chromecast
Drag and drop the video/audio file you want to play into the Chrome browser
Click the browser extension and select "Cast this tab", t

Provided you don't increase the Bitrate it should not increase in size by much.

I was afraid you were going to say that. Does the batch section of Handbrake let you pick to transcode in same bitrate audio? I haven't installed it so if I can't then I won't bother to even download it. Thanks for your help!

Casting a tab?

okay, so when I try to cast a tab and play a local video file.. the video freezes on the TV, but continues to play on my computer.. the sound also still comes through the TV while its frozen. Why is this? And is there anyway to cast a local file from your phone?

What kind of local file (container format, compression type and bitrate) is it? It sounds like maybe the local file has a "glitch" in it or the file is using variable bitrate compression and the video bitrate exceeds what Chromecast can handle at the point it freezes.
Local file casting currently requires a rooted Chromecast, KyoCast installed on the Chromecast, and an un-timebombed AllCast/AirCast installed on your phone... The phone-local file needs to be a format Chromecast can play, and must be played in an app that allows Share to the AllCast/AirCast app.
Me too the issue happened on my chromecast even on youtube ... other pc work with me but one pc is showing this behaviour

That can happen if the transcoding performance of your computer is not sufficient for tab casting. I get that symptom if I attempt tab casting from my 2 GHz dual-core laptop, but not from my 4 GHz quad-core desktop. Google's beta tab-casting code just isn't very efficient.

I have an i5.. with 8 gigs of ram..
It'll still depend mainly on how CPU-intensive the decoding of the video you're watching is. Whatever its left over needs to be enough to compress to whatever Chromecast needs.
It's more than that though. My system runs at only 12-18% CPU utilization while tab casting (depending on resolution), but the video is still a bit jerky, noticeably dropping frames about once a second. Dropping the resolution to 480p doesn't affect that at all. When I play the exact same internet stream via Plex running on the same computer and casting it to a Plex client, the video is perfectly smooth. The only explanation I can see for the poor performance along with low average CPU utilization is that Google isn't using enough buffering, and every time it gets overwhelmed by a momentary peak in transcoding, it stumbles and drops some frames. You can easily see and hear that the lag between the stream on the computer and the stream coming out of the Chromecast is only a fraction of a second, so that would support the insufficient-buffering theory.

The flip side to the coin would be that the Cast extension isn't using enough compression. More buffering would create additional lag between what's on the computer and out from the Chroemcast. There's already a fair lag.
More compression would mean higher CPU requirements but lower network bandwidth
More buffering would mean more lag
Being that the Cast extension is still in beta, I'm hoping Google either lets us adjust these settings (the previously-discovered hidden settings would be reasonable) or they are trying to determine the best compromise given the target market. The parameters are narrow enough that a Q&A optimizer would probably work.
My video is lagging: decrease buffering & use looser compression
My video is pausing, skipping or jumping: increase buffering
My video is still pausing, skipping or jumping: decrease compression

Actually I have been able to stream local content from my Plex Server using the Chrome Browser Tab Cast feature...
Open Plex Media Manager in the browser, Cast the tab to the Chromecast, Play the video, make it full screen and all is good.
Perhaps because the Plex Server does transcoding and his local file does not.
Most of my files are H264 MP4 files and AVI and other containers won't work like you said.

Actually it's two-fold in your case.
Plex Server is making sure Chrome can play it (ensures it's browser-friendly)
and
because you're tab-casting, the source doesn't really matter because the Cast extension is recompressing what appears on the screen to a Chromecast-compatible format. The Cast extension doesn't care whether it's video or PowerPoint or an animated GIF - at the point the Cast extension sees it, it's just a series of images for it to compress and send to Chromecast
