[Q] Coming from HTC Titan HSPL to WP8 Lumia xxx - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay...I accepted a good while back that WP7.8 days are numbered but I have a pair of Titans that are customized and other than Skype not being able to run in background and the phone's mobile data speeds appear to be throttled at Cat 8 and not Cat 10 as AT&T swears they didn't mess with the data speeds...I'm having a hard time departing from them...but...I realize that the time has come to do just that and I'm eyeballing the Lumia 625 which appears to have the same size display, slightly lower camera, lower ROM but an expandable memory slot. What I need to know from WP8 users is seriously how good is WP8 and will Skype run in background as good as it does on Android. Thanks!

Works good, I receive push notifications on every message almost instantly.

There's quirks that make WP8 a hit and miss.
1) If you had your music all tagged properly in Zune, you'll have to redo almost all of it in WMP\Winamp if you have multiple artists on an album.
2) The new camera apps are nice, especially Nokia's Pro Cam.
3) NFC, there isn't quite any uses for it unless you purchase accessories that have nfc in them or purchase preformatted nfc chips. Also, NFC Billing doesn't work either.
4) Bluetooth - Works great if you have both headset and music profiles on your devices. If connected to music, all notifications go through it while simply muting the music/video you are watching. Anything that uses the MS voice goes over the headset profile.
5) Toast Notifications - FB is the worst. some go through way later that it was supposed to, some don't even go through. That's even with the beta. Other than that, some are quicker than others. (Skype is near instant)
6) Zune\Xbox Video didn't ship at launch and is promised at a later update. (so much for the whole xbox universe)
7) Having apps set for your lockscreen is nice, but the time and date text still takes up a quarter to half of your screen.
8) WP8 is supposed to get an overhaul (branded WP8.1) in Q1 2014. Seems way too far away for me.
9) Phones with the Amber update are cool. There's a standby clock that also shows if its charging and if its on vibrate. Flip the phone over to silence.
That's all I can think about at the moment.

Questions coming from the AT&T S2

I wanted the Note to begin with but went with the S2. I'm in the process of selling my S2 now on CL. I have a few questions first:
1. How's the GPS?
2. ANy issues with AT&T(i assume I can just pop my AT&T SIM in and be good to go).
3. Do market apps work fine with the Notes big screen or do they look crappy because they weren't meant for a large screen?
4. How's every one generally liking the phone? How is it to make calls on (holding up to ones face not via BT).
Info is needed:
I'm on a unlimited 4G plan with AT&T (already using the S2 now) <-----not sure if this matters
Anything else would be excellent. Thanks again guys. Looking to get this then throw a ROM on for speed, remove bloat, tethering (should already be unlocked since not a carrier version) and cleanness.
I have found that it works EXACTLY like the GSII. The screen has one more row for shortcuts.
You'll not notice any difference, other than the enormous size difference. I have huge hands, so the size doesn't matter to me. It's actually quite comfortable.
I just hope some better cases come out for it. There is nothing but crap available now.
Thank you for your thoughts on the device. I'm looking to get one ASAP. Espically since that and the S2 will get ICS in Q1 2012. I know the international versions will get it much quicker then the carrier (AT&T, etc) locked down versions.
GPS is best on the market, literally. its using a new setup that allows for access to many more satellites and locks on better than most dedicated GPS units.
apps are hit and miss. some scale fully, some dont scale at all. theres an app to resize apps though.
i dont use BT when i make calls. its a good sized phone. only downside is that there is a fair bit of leakage out of the earpiece, ie. people around you can often hear both sides of the conversation.

What is the app that resizes? Does the resizing make it look distorted? How's the facebook app and other common ones like tapatalk, etc

Facebook and TapaTalk both work great. No issues whatsoever. I have not seen any rendering issues at all. There have been a few apps that won't download because they say they don't work on a tablet. The phone shows up as a tablet in the Android Market.

GPS is Fantastic! Better than the SGSII. ( I had SGSII for 3 weeks and also have a skyrocket) I routinely get a lock INSIDE my house!
You can pop your ATT SIM in but you must configure the APN for Data and MMS.
I have downloaded about 20 (not finished yet) apps to my GNote and they all look fine!
I have only made calls with bluetooth. I have not held to my ear yet except at home. It seems a bit large to do that. My skyrocket is crap with bluetooth but the GNote has been great with my car.
I do not like swipe or the samsung keyboard. Had to download the gingerbread keyboard. I have used several but keep coming back to that one.
Typing is 1000 time easier and better. For the life of me I could not type accurately type on the SGSII...
The screen resolution will blow you away! Watch that video that comes on it! WOW! There is no bloat as with ATT.
I do not know if ATT can detect the tether or not? When I log on to my ATT account it does not show the phone I am using. Does anyone know for sure?

1. The GPS is fantastic! It literally outperforms anything else I have ever used, including dedicated stand-alone GPS units.
2. There was initially an issue with AT&T where a particular range of Note IMEI's were being erroneously detected as a tablet device on the system. This issue seems to have been resolved. Even then, not every Note is/was affected anyway. The only other thing I can recommend (apart from configuring the correct APN's, which you can find throughout this forum) is to disable Fast Dormancy. Enter *#*#9900#*#* from your dialer and disable that feature from the menu that pops up. Basically it's a feature that AT&T doesn't use, and disabling it on your Note will vastly improve data speed and reliability.
3. So far I haven't had any issues with apps. Everything I've used looks fine so far.
4. Generally I'm loving the Note. There are a couple of minor (for me anyway) niggles. Mainly, it definitely is a big laggier than the SGS2, but not to the point where it's a deal breaker for me. The lag can mostly be attributed to software for now, but I expect these issues will mostly be solved when ICS is released for it. In the mean time, using SPB Shell 3D in tablet mode instead of TouchWiz has worked wonders. The side button on the s-pen is a little difficult to find just by feeling around for it, but that can be alleviated by etching a # pattern with a razor blade onto the button, giving it just a little more texture. As for actual call quality, honestly it's the clearest and best sounding call quality I have ever heard on a phone, period. Even better than most wired phones I've used!

Totally agree! Been using the Gingerbread keyboard since my old Captivate, and even on tablets! By far my favourite keyboard!

Well, considering that our unlocked devices are free of any AT&T bloatware or other intrusiveware that would otherwise report the specific use of our own equipment, I'm willing to bet that the only way AT&T would be able to detect that we're tethering is to perform deep packet inspection in order to determine the kind of traffic going through the device. I have tethered with both my old unlocked SGS2 and now my Note using only the stock Android tethering ability with no issues. However, I would recommend that you tether only when absolutely necessary and not abuse it, lest you risk being spotted by the Evil Eye of Sauron. Basically, as long as you don't draw unnecessary attention to yourself, you should be fine.

Lumia r android?

Hey guys i Have a Samsung galaxy s2 (Which I love dearlyand am planning to go for some other phone(upgrade)! :cyclops: my friends suggested me to go for a LUMIA and i got convinced(Almost)...'Man Why Leave Android?'was the question That Pop-ed Up! in My head!!!.....
Should i Go for a Lumia Guys???Is It Worth The Money?

ALL i want my Smart-Phone to do is :
Check Mail(Tons of 'em)
Stay connected to 3g/Wi-Fi Throughout The day
Hear Hours of Music!
And The Battery Should Last Me atleast 12 Hours of Heavy Usage!
So what do u Suggest!!!
Only you can answer that. In my opinion wp is the best phone / social hub out there. What it does out of the box is second to none, If you want to mod the crap out of a it and have what is essentially a pocket computer then it isn't perhaps what you want.

Depending on your definition of "heavy usage" then it's quite possible that there is no smartphone which, out of the box, will meet it... but there's a huge difference between, say, playing an online game (CPU at full speed, GPU at full speed, screen on continuously, data on continuously, audio on continuously) and streaming music (data and audio, but not much else). My ATIV S can do the latter for 12 hours no problem (all day, if it's playing local music rather than streaming) and that's without turning off the automatic synch of six email accounts and a few other background tasks. Generally speaking, WP8 will be better about battery use than Android, although an Android phone that emphasized long battery life could still last longer than a Windows phone that does, all other things being equal.
Checking multiple mail accounts works very nicely. I keep them separate on my phone, but you can combine them if you want to.
Staying connected is no problem. WP8 does default to turning off WiFi while the phone is unplugged and the screen off, but you can override this behavior if you want to; otherwise, the switch between WiFi and cellular data is seamless anyhow.
Music is one of the main things I use my phone for; it works great. I mostly stream from Xbox Music (I have what used to be called a Zune Pass, which gives me all-you-can-eat music streaming and even downloading, valid for as long as you maintain the subscription) and the phone should come with a free trial of that service; Nokia also has their own music streaming service, plus there's apps for using third-party services (Pandora, etc.). Please do note that due to licensing BS, these services may or may not be available in your region; if you expect to use them, check first! In any case, just playing music off the internal storage or SD card works fine.

If you love photography, you will go madly in love with a 920,925 or the beefier 1020(41mpx camera)
Yeah, if you want the best photos from your phone, then hands-down the 1020 is the device for you. It has a good battery life too. The performance should blow away your S2 as well.

Need some help with Note 5 lack of features is it fixable??

Hi I am coming form a heavily used Note 2. As a business owner the Note 2 was my most important piece of equipment!!! Plus being always on the go it's flash video capabilities made being away from home easy. I never missed a basketball game or big fight. Watched them right on my phone. I remember being at a restaurant one Saturday night away from home and having the whole bar area crowd around my phone to watch a big fight. Pretty cool and useful. Unfortunately my Note 2 bit the dust and cant be fixed for reasonable money. Sprint store talked me into a Note 5 for my upgrade and contract renewal with a cheaper plan.
I was wondering if there are any ways to get similar apps or mods on my Note 5 Without rooting it. I am very dissapointed and feel like taking it back. Not impressed at all. Especially since I am out of pocket $200 and had to sign a 2 year plan. Maybe somebody can help or suggest some things. Or at least this can be a WARNING to potential buyers of the phones REAL LIFE CAPABILITIES AND LIMITS. Not some generic commercial hype or store sales pitch of since its a #5 it is better and does more things than the earlier numbered phones.
1. No live sports or new movie streams though web browsers
Lack of flash support ... I used flash websites to stream live sports or newer movies on my Note 2. I have downloaded the proper Adobe Flash version on the Note 5. I have also downloaded and enabled browsers like Firefox, Flash Fox, and Dolphin.
I have verified that flash is working. However, the sites for the live sports and movies DO NOT work. These sites all worked fine with the Note 2 stock browser.... Any other flash browser suggestions???? Anyway to download or install the Note 2 stock browser on Note 5?????
2. Mirroring. Watching EXACTLY what you see on your phone to a big TV.
All share Samsung data caster. I bought an expensive Samsung data caster that worked well to mirror my phone on to my living room TV.....Anyway to use this with my Note 5????? I don't see the option to on the phone.
Will a MHL cord to hdmi still mirror for a note 5??????
3. Using your internet and making a phone call at the same time.
Since I travel I use my phone as a modem for my laptop and computers....Tether... On my Note 2 with the PDA.net app it worked great. Was faster than any home internet I ever had. I could be on the phone and be browsing the web on my computer at the same time. It worked so well I cancelled my home ISP. It also came in handy even to just look things up on the phones internet while you were talking to clients.... I was VERY UPSET to find out that I can not do any of this on the Note 5. This is a major deal. I don't get this one at all. Any way to fix???????
4. Sound for music is not anything better.
5. Notifications and display are far less attention grabbing than on the Note 2. Easily miss texts or overlook them. The notification L.E.D.S are super WEAK.
6. My battery drains way faster! It does charge faster though. But I don't think this will be a good device to have where charging is not an option for a while.
7. You cant delete photos from the gallery... You have to open up the camera app to delete them... This seems so strange and pointless. Am I missing something here??????
Would appreciate any help or feedback on these issues. Thanks...
1. Not sure
2. Chromecast/Fire Stick, both work as I have personally tested this and both are available for under 50 dollars. (The screen mirroring option is in the quick toggles on your Note 5, mirrors everything on the screen not just compatible apps.)
3.Have not tested this
4. I think you need better headphones if you think it does not sound better.
5. Have not noticed this either
6. Disable unneeded apps, I am getting great battery life from mine.
7.QuickPic

Thanks for the info and response!!!!
2. I tried the the "quick connect" feature in the toggle down menu. IT WORKED with my DATA CASTER. I just don't like how it cuts the WI FI on too. i can live with that though. I now have mirroring without having to buy something else. Thanks!!!!
3. Yeah I have tested and confirmed with Sprint. Supposedly its a big deal and a lot of people are sending their phones back because of this. Literally just had a real life scenario where i needed to be on the phone and browse the web but couldn't..
4. I have $60 earbuds from Sienheiser. Maybe your ears work better or you have better head phones. I'm not willing to pay any more than $60 or buy another pair. They are less than a year old. But the sound is great. Just hard for my ears to pick up the difference. Both Note 2 and note 5 sound excellent though.
5. I also noticed that if you stay on a text message conversation screen and leave the screen on. . . . It will not ring or notify you if an additional text from that sender comes through. I don't like that at all. I want it to ring and vibrate for every text no matter what!
6. Can you clarify what you mean by disable????? Like delete???? Which ones did you get rid of????
7. I will look into QuickPic.....I'm guessing its an app in the play store?
Was your note 2 on lollipop? I have a feeling son of the things like notifications might be a lollipop thing not a note 5 thing
Go to your setting and adjust everything till it feels like your ideal phone.
If you're near wifi you can talk and be online at the same time l

Are you able to go full screen?
What link is working for you?
What is Dolphin jetpack?
Thanks for the help!

1) You had an Android device from 2012. The internet and Google have since moved on to HTML5. Flash is dead. Very few OSs support flash anymore. This isn't a phone issue. The unfortunate issue is your websites still utilize flash which is dangerous and a battery hog. A lot of security flaws and too much memory usage.
2)DL AllCast from the Google Play store, it hacks into any casting device. I have an AppleTV (back when I used to be pro Apple) and I use it constantly. All your casting needs whether it's a movie, phone screen, music, gallery etc all at your fingertips.
3)This is a Sprint issue not a phone issue. Sprint uses CMDA technology which requires dual cellular radios in order to surf and talk. Every other carrier supports simultaneous voice and data. I have Verizon (also CDMA, but I have dual radios in my phone) and can do it with my phone. When the phones hit a particular carrier, they decide to upgrade the radios to do surf/talk. If they decide not to which Sprint did not. You can't. Some claim this is a way to keep they're network bandwidth higher. Its 2015, regardless the phone should be able to do it.
4) The Note 5 came with a lot of new audio support modes. One feature I would recommend is using adaptic. It recognizes your ears ability to sense particular frequencies and changes the sound to your ears which makes a lot of difference.
5) You change change your notification settings in the individual apps your speaking off. The LED notification can be adjusted to your liking within settings. If this doesn't work. You can always DL an app that uses your phones flash to flash when your getting a notification (I know, I know.... Like an iPhone but it works great).
6). Lollipop has not been kind to device batteries. A lot of unnecessary system processes and apps. There are other posts within the Note 5 category that will guide you on debloating and disabling those packages and apps to gain better performance. Again not a phone issue but a software issue. Android M (which these phones will be first in-line to get) will change a lot of the problems they created in Lollipop. The Note 5 is not the only phone that suffers from this problem. A lot of them do.
7) Yes you can, but its hidden behind a sub menu. Long press on the photo you want to delete and it will pop open the delete function in the top menu bar (see image attached)
Hope this all helps. I suggest dumping Sprint and coming to Verizon. While it's not cheaper. It certainly is much better. Speeds, tethering, and service pretty much everywhere.

Thanks for all the info I really appreciate that!!!!!!:good:
1. Is 3 years really that long.... When you spend that much money for something i would expect to have that option. You don't have to use a or go on a flash site if you don't want to....Flash is alive and well. Like I had mentioned earlier, people who stream Live sports and recent movie releases are all still Flash sites. I do not know of one html5 site that live streams sports.... Would love to find one if its out there though
2. I got the stock app to work with my Samsung All share Data caster. It is really choppy though. Thanks I will give that one a try and see if its any better
3. Wow that makes me even angrier with Sprint. i have tried to go to Verizon and t-mobile. They both have said stick with Sprint. My bills would be over twice as much with them because they don't do true unlimited Data like sprint does. Even when they do offer it, they bottleneck and slow your speed down once you reach a certain amount of data... My data usage makes Sprint my only choice and the fastest for me.
4. Will try thanks!!!!!
5. Note 5 has that from factory. I have it turned on. but in the day light the white flash is not to visible. Also, not visible when the phone is screen up. I have played with the settings. The notification LED just isn't that bright, big, flashes frequent enough to work as well as the older one. The Flash notification though is super helpful at night or in the dark.
6. If I keep the phone I will look into that. However, I find all the battery life claims with factory settings....auto screen brightness, keeping all apps closed, with just normal daily use to be terrible. I find it hard to believe that getting rid of the bloat-ware will take it form terrible to acceptable, but i'll take your word for it ... I hope so.
7. No attached image is showing for me????? I tried tapping and holding the pic and nothing is happening.......still only gives the option to share.
I think dolphin browser still works with flash. you will have to find the flash apk download though.

Same thing... Will play for a second then freezes with Link 2... Also will not go full screen. Tried mobile and desktop modes.

Flash is dead:
http://www.businessinsider.com/google-chrome-wont-autoplay-flash-ads-2015-8
In device terms with technology coming out. Yes 3 years is old enough.
With phone service you get what you pay for. I've never had a dropped call, network failure, or internet outtage. And from previous experiences living in the sticks of Kentucky. I still got 4G Verizon. Now I'm in Florida and never lower then 3 bars of coverage. I pay $234 a month for two phones and a tablet. I pay for 10gb and I get additional 5gb of data added to my plan per month for free as I am a loyal Verizon Customer. So it works out great.
Idk why it didn't post so my apologies.
Here are photos of the deleting procedure and my battery life on my phone after stream lining it. I average 18-22 hrs on a single charge. Depending on usage.

Stated that i have the correct flash apk and Dolphin+ tried 4 other "flash friendly browsers" too. Some flash works but not all. none of the live sports stuff works....

Still cant get flash, dolphin, and front row to work....
Some more updates
- Still cant get flash for front row to work with Dolphin.
More updates:
-LED notifications are super weak and almost not visible on bright sunny days
- Have missed several text because if I leave a text conversation open if a text from that sender comes through It wont notify you.
-Also all free messaging apps wont work while you are on the phone. Like KIK and others. You can not receive any of those messages until you get off the phone . Makes me wonder if Email is like this too???? How counter productive and backwards...
They literally have taken out more features and all multi tasking... So what do I care if the hardware is better????? IT DOES WAY LESS!!!!!

Yeah that part is true and no mapping and no nothing about data when your on a call. But you can hear a cricket fart at 200 paces! But again that is a sprint thing. Sprint blames it onSamsung but Samsung builds to sprints specs.

Turn off Mobile Data nag notification?

Please excuse this post which is not strictly concerning an Optimus Black. There's no forum for an Optimus Zone 2 (VerizonPP) but I hope this is a common enough issue which must have broader application.
I'm using an Optimus Zone 2 as a replacement for my recently deceased and much-loved Insignia Pilot. The rise of the smart phone has meant the demise of really capable mp3 players like the Pilot but I realized that an Android device would allow me to find music, audiobook, and video apps that might come close to replacing my Pilot.
I've got the phone, by-passed the activation, rooted, customized. The battery is not as long-lasting, but there is a lot going on "under the hood", so that's OK.
I have 3G disabled, WiFi off unless used. My only real complaint with my setup is the annoying nag notification that comes up when I power up the phone concerning the lack of a data connection. It wouldn't be so bad if it would just go away by itself, but no, I have to dismiss it with a touch. I've disabled every phone related app I can find, turned off notifications for those it would not let me disable. And still it's there.
Is there a way to get rid of something like this?
[no, I don't use the device as a phone--although I have GrooveLite Ip installed for emergencies when WiFi is available. I don't own a cell phone. Have no use for one. But it's hard to beat a $30 "mp3" player running KitKat!)

Android Auto for phone screens is final stopped?

Even the Android Auto for phone screens was retired for Android 12, you can still use it on old Androids 11, 10. A month ago a message appear "Android Auto for phone screens will stop working soon", but still can use it.
Today I tried to start the app and instead appear the Android Auto settings page and no more Android Auto for phone screens. I have Miui 12.5.7 with Android 11 and Android Auto 7.6.621734-release.
Its only me or they kill out AAFPS for good?
For me the same...
Android Auto is now on the scrap heap; in short it will no longer work as a stand-alone.
Google have thrown a kill-switch (2 days ago now) for discrete mode so that now, it can only work in screen-mirroring mode which necessitates a compatible infotainment system/head unit (check the message it opens with).
The official alternative on offer is Driving Mode in the Google Assistant. It's of dubious quality, especially for devices older than Android 10, where it really is just a shortcut to Google Maps.
Alternative apps/launchers are available but they are either expensive or just plain rubbish (and often both).
I'm sorry to hear this is confirmed. So no more Android Auto, I don't have a compatible infotainment system/head unit.
Driving Mode in the Google Assistant is a just simple no-go. Here in Romania we use a lot Waze for police report, traffic jams and bad roads. Also since romanian language is not supported , you can spell some small commands in english, but to convince it to drive you at address or even to call your mom is very difficult.
So now I'm without alternative .

Indeed - and you are not alone as many reviews on Google Play confirm.
One other option is to roll-back to an older version. If you don't have a backup then APKMirror might be for you:-
Android Auto on APKMirror
FWIW we have an older, 7/Nougat device running ver 7.4.62094-release and it seems to work still.
If you do try this, then be sure and disable auto-update for it in Google Play...

I'll give it a try: my Renault Megane is half destroyed and now I have to use (for long time) a Seat Leon without AA enabled!
I've started AA on my old (but still running fine) Motorola Moto G5 and is not working anymore... Problem is that the phone is running Android 8.1 so Drive Assistant is not available (it needs at least Android 9!)

on my pc I had a few backups, I have removed the current build and installed Android Auto_7.2.620123-release and it worked flawlessly!
I'll look for a more recent build on APKmirror!
Addendum: tried with v7.6 but got the advice. For my Android v8.1 the last working is v7.2!
Thank you for this thread!
This has been nagging me more than usual as AA for Phone Screens was something I've used daily. (strong feedback sent to google, not that it will do any good)
Tried with app version 7.3.620544 on Android 11 and I can launch it a few times, all good and functional. But after a few hours an internal update seems to check the installed and Play store versions, preventing me from starting the application without updating. So reinstall APK again. (a hassle)
Tried creating a re-signed version with Android Studio to block auto-updates, but the re-signed APK install itself is blocked due to signature mismatch - even after uninstalling for user 0. I fear this might be only possible with rooting the phone...
I would very much appreciate any other non-root option to get this functioning again. Curse you google for ruining google.
I also tried to modify the apk.
I was not successful. Therefore I gave up...
Google are literally murderers , besides all the people they have stranded or driven of the road or over ravines with their crappy maps app
they have probably killed thousands in traffic accidents with their garbage software
,this new "driving mode" is no exception , I mean AA was an absolute out of control garbage fire just like GA is but this "driving mode" is over the top
even for the complete morons over at Google.
I can not tell you how many accidents I have almost got into since they removed trusted voice unlock and now that this POS driving mode has replaced AA it has gotten MUCH worse, they should be sued for this dangerous crap they have forced on us, I will NOT be buying another pixel EVER.
fist of all this POS continually turns the screen off and locks the device forcing me to unlock the phone continuously while driving,
they are so S all stupid they didn't even bother to make it rotate to landscape mode and my car mount is for landscape only. (only people who hold their guns sideways would want to use their phones in portrait mode as they always seem to do when taking word star videos)
the "driving mode" is pure trash ,there are no audio controls, you can't use it if you just want to listen to music and for phone calls because it's tied to maps and you have be using navigation to use it.
there is NOTHING here of any value I mean who TF wants to read the New York Slimes, ever and especially WHILE DRIVING, yeah great replacement to music apps and music controls.
There is no way in hell I would ever give these evil bastards my biometric data so here I am trying to unlock my phone with a pattern every 30 seconds while it is mounted landscape and the unlock pattern is in portrait mode, I have to tilt my head or try and figure out my lock pattern adjusted for it being tilted 90 degree off while I'm driving every 30 seconds because the screen keeps turning off and locking the device even though I have "smartlock" (DUMBlock) enabled and my cars bluetooth added as a "trusted device" as well as a smart band, but it just seems to ignore the fact both are connected.
how in the actual F do any of these imbecilic A holes still have jobs, every single last one of them should have been kicked the F out on their arses a long time ago. , maybe we need to get Elon over there.

F it, I am just going to throw away my pixel and go back to IOS
I am F ing done , removal of trusted voice unlock was bad enough but this is the last straw.
My idea is to install an alternative launcher as soon as you are connected to your car's Bluetooth system. I mean a launcher made for driving with big icons and so on.
With tasker you could additionally make a task to increase the display timeout to infinite when connected to your car's Bluetooth system.

Because they have done exactly what The Chocolate Factory wants.
Android Auto was quite good in the past but then they realised a serious problem: It hurts sales.
So the aim then became to make everybody sick of it by degrees, breaking it a piece at a time until expectations reduce to the point the user base ebbs away.
So what's in it for them? Google are betting that Android's 'popularity' will oblige most of us to seek an alternative - but only if works with their device; that means buying a new infotainment system - one that is either Android Auto or stand-alone Android.
Google and OEMs (JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer etc) now have another major market cornered and if they have done their math right, all of us switching over will mean a windfall of revenue in new hardware sales and licence fees.
As for looking for a launcher, well good luck with that. We've tried several but not one has the ability to switch between driving and phone mode.
These two probably represent the best of what's left but again, neither is properly polished even for the paid versions:-
DashDroid on Google Play
AutoMate on Google Play
Failing that, get a TomTom!

Thing is most cars don't have it still
the stand alone android units just suck because they don't have any connection method unless they use your phone as a hotspot , unless they have some with sim cards, but now sim cards are being phased out too, and I would not spend more money a month just to keep my head unit connected to GSM
I would buy a head unit if they made one that had wireless android auto baked in but there are none, at least not what I want, I want one for my BMW E46 that looks pretty close to stock, Android head units like that are a dime a dozen for this thing but none of them have AA or wireless AA
,what they should really make is a tablet that has wireless AA built in
or a fire tablet that acts as an echo show auto but with a screen
that you can mount to your dash ,sucks that all the hardware has been there to this for like a decade but because of theese big cancer monopolies we can't use the hardware to its full potential
I have yet to try reloaded yet but I have feeling it will not be good
but here is no reason this can't run on low end tablet like a fire tablet
maybe I will finally get around to trying out my echo auto that I picked up for $20 that has been sitting here not even unboxed for over a year now
thing is that my grom unit is a PITA to pair to my phone , you need to pull 3 different fuses to erase it and repair a new device and then once you do the feature that send the ID4 tags to the display on the radio might not work then you have to pair it all over agian , I am wondering if echo auto will send the track data to the grom and if it will display on the stock radio display like it does with the phone , then maybe I will just ditch GA altogether
its a horrible trash fire anyways , if Amazon made a fire phone again with hands free Alexa baked in I would buy it in hearbeat, anything to get rid of GA

F Google , I will NEVER buy another phone from them until they bring back trusted voice unlock and make their phones useable while driving
android is a nothing but a trash fire now, mainly because GA just sucks now
doesn't work while driving , doesn't work with hands free at all not even while using buds, unacceptable trash OS and very dangerous to use while driving people will die in accidents because of Googles moronic decisions and negligence, again F Google I'm out.

Many of us share your frustration and of course, you are at liberty to try alternatives if you think they are better.
Yet this is primarily a help thread and some would say your 'questions' had been answered before you even posted. So please bear in mind that 'going-off on one' does dilute the thread; making it harder for others to find the help they need as it becomes buried in the noise.
Good luck in your quest...

Yes everything Google does frustrates me, these people are absolutely obtuse
ok so do you have any suggestions for alternatives?
maybe there is a 3rd party app?
I have a Grom bluetooth unit and they have an app called dashlinq but I have not tried it yet
not sure how it will work with Google assistant
so are there any other 3rd party apps that do essentially the same thing as AA?
not sure if this dashlinq app uses GA or not or if it has it's own voice recognition.
I am surprised that there is not a way to keep using AA though as there is with Google play music ,which you can stil use if you have the right legacy version installed despite its replacement with YT music.
I am still confident there is a way, and also a bit confused
on weather it is going to work on my phone still since I have not updated past Android 11 , guess I will try installing some older .apk's and see if it is only not working anymore on Android 12.
