Popping or crackling sound during calls - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everybody
I bought HTC One two weeks ago
Sometimes I hear a popping or crackling sound or something like that during my calls.
I'm using an official rom
What should I do about this?

Anybody has this problem?

It's a prevalent issue and there are tons of threads about this. From what I've read no one knows if it's hardware of software related, my unit is suffering from this problem as well and I'm freaking pissed at HTC for their sloppy qc.

During calls, when playing videos or songs, everything is fine with my phone. No issues, sound is really great!
My theory: Crackling noise and popping during calls etc. is hardware.

my phone is fine over here..

I changed my phone with a new one under warranty
But the issue is still here!!!
What should I do?
I'm disappointed now...

Speaker not fully duplex?

Hi,
I have a very weird problem with my Tytn II, which I bought little over a week now.
People I was talking to complained they didn't hear me very good, the sound appeared to drop. It occured to me that it was happening when I used the speaker (handsfree) of the phone.
I did some testing, and this is what happens:
I (with the Tytn II) call person X, and when I and person X are talking together, person X cannot hear me, the sound on his side simply fades to nothing, until 1 of us keeps quiet. The same happens when for example sound from my car is picked up by the phone, thus resulting in the device not being usable in the car, since there's always some noise. I however on my side keep hearing person X, it's person X that doesn't hear me.
It happens with 2 sim cards, everyone I call, did a hard reset, HTC support doesn't know the problem...
I'm puzzled. Can anyone suggest anything? Or is it faulty?
Thanks
no, mine does the same thing. I got it a few days ago and when i used speaker while driving, i could hear the other person perfect, but they cant seem to hear me. It feels like half duplex. i hope this is fixable
Damn, it seems widespread then...?
Anyone who can test it?
maybe it has to do with whatever noise cancelling algorithm is in effect is mucking everything up

Meaning that every single device would have this, and thus mine not being faulty?
I had the same problem but remembered that there was an automatic sound function which turns down the volume when talking is too hard and turns it up when to soft. Its called microphone agc and you can find it under system configuration. Now that it's turned off my dutch htc tytn II works fine in handsfree mode. Hoop this helps you also

It's already turned off :-( .
However, I just called with HTC, and they said it's because of the mic and the speaker being too close to each other, and thus it compensates.
They say every model has it however, they did a test today and the result was that it was a feature, not a bug...
Anyone here who does not have it on his device?
I have this problem all the time, both on speaker and just using the phone to my ear as normal.
People complain I am very quiet or that the sound is choppy and I sound like a robot
I used to have this problem on the O2 XDA IIs a few years ago.
Anyone else have it too? I'd like to know asap if this device is faulty, or if it's normal?
Sometimes, it seems that when I'm holding it to my ear, the sound seem to drop on the other side too...
I have exactly the same problem. People have trouble hearing me with loudspeaker switched on. Without speaker they can hear me perfectly.
I have the same problem too. Just try to disable the Microphone AGC thing and it fixes the problem. Thanks downnootje.
I have teh same problem , but I tried something and it is improved the Operation , try to minimize the Speaker volume to the minimum level and then it improes a little and it works for me ; not all the time but that is what we can do at the moment
I'm convinced now that it's a mojor problem.
Mine even got worse: since yesterday, it's happening without handsfree too, people can't almost hear me when I just hold it to my ear...
Is this a phone still, or can't it be used as such?
try enableing Microphone AGC thing, restart phone, and disable it
Me too. Juz got my set 2 days back. The other party hears my voice intermittently chop-off...
I have faced the similar problem on a particular China-made TV phone too. Tested two other units of the same model still the same. It seems to me the phone design issue, as after I changed to another model of China-made TV phone, the problem solved.
Sigh! Already got this expensive phone, think have to bear with this feature then if it is really cannot be resolved by new ROM.
same problem
i have the same problem...with my 8525 when I was on the train or in a similar noisy situation i never had any trouble with people hearing me on the other end...with the tilt i can't even carry on a conversation on the train...i called tech support and they told me to swap it out for a new one.

I've tried that and it doesn't help! Quite sad about it. I need to use speaker handsfree especially during driving.... Don't really like to hook-up the headset or BT headset... too messy for wired headset and too tedius (charging) for BT headset...
Now that I know its half duplex it works pretty well in the car - I just wait for the other person to stop talking
Surur
I will be sending mine to HTC for a planned hardware fix as they agreed there is a defect that affects all kaiser and tilts, but NOT the MDA VARIO III. this is a known issue and is hardware related. Good news for those who havent purchased one yet. I will sell mine on ebay if they dont asign me a RA soon. I rather have the MDA VARIO III as it has 2 cams.
(doesnt your HTC TYTN2 has 2 camera's?)
Same problem here. Hope for a sollution soon!
Will call HTC too soon, so theyll have more complaints about this defect.

[Q] Voice sounds Distorted during telephone conversations?

Hi,
I have had my Samsung i9000 for about 2 months now and really like it, I think its a great phone...
I just made a call about an hour ago and noticed that when I pressed the call button to make the call, and heard the call/ring tone, it sounded very distorted (as if the speaker was buzzing? but distortion decribes it better).
I have made a few calls since then to check this and its happening all the time during calls now....
Whats weird is that when I play an mp3 & put it on loudspeaker, the sound is perfectly clear??
Does anyone have this "incall distortion" problem or experience it before?
Are there any know fixes for this?
Really appreciate all comments/help with this folks...
Thanks
Dave
Bump... Still have this problem folks, can anyone help me out here?
Had this with a new SGS and got it changed (within the 14 days period).
Yep, been contemplating sending it to samsung, complaints my voice is unclear too.
The earpiece noise I believe is from the antenna, faulty shielding perhaps.

[Q] HTC One speaker problem - One speaker turning off / mono sound

My HTC One has started to develop this problem where it goes either mono or one speaker stops working or something along those lines. It happens for about 10 seconds then doesn't happen for another 30 minutes or so. It is not the audio coming from the phone as it even does it in games. And there is a subtle echo when audio of people talking is played and it gets really annoying when you are in a very quiet environment. Does anyone have this problem or know how to fix it? Or should I send it back? (I'm already trying to about the gaps and rough edges but HTC (Expansys) won't reply to my emails and just want to repair it.

[Q] Strange call problem

Hey there!
I am very happy with my HTC One even after the announcement of the M8, but since a few days I have a very strange problem.
Every time I try to take a call, I need to enable the speaker, since the one I am calling with can't hear me without.
It seems like my voice is there, but really really quite.
I was using Viper One till today and it happened between 5.60 and 5.70, but today I changed the rom to see whether it could be a rom problem and using now InsertCoin SixthSense 1.0.1.
My HTC One is unlocked, S-OFF and of course rooted... any idea, what could fix my really quite voice, instead of screaming or using the speaker the whole time? I don't like it, when everybody can hear me talking on the phone, I'm no Eric Cartman.
Record some video with very loud sounds. Try blowing or whistling directly into the mic . Sounds crazy but it has worked for others.

Will try both "fixes" tomorrow.
So it's a already known problem for some users?
Btw: I tried to use Shazam and it also nearly identifies no music, even if it is in front of the speaker. So it has to be something with the normal mic. But why does it work flawlessly, when talking with the speaker enabled?
I suppose it could affect all mic functions. I personally experienced this with phone calls and personally fixed it with loud recordings (as did others), i didn't check shazam ..

Okay tried it a few days ago with whistling directly into the mic and it didn't fixed my problem.
So I decided to try the extremely loud recording and it sadly also didn't worked.
But I found out, that it has been gotten worse than before. My recordings on 29.03 went with a few quite whistles, but my recording yesterday couldn't record any whistle at all and only got music, after I increased the volume to +300 and it's still really quite.
I also tried to flash a new radio and kernel, none of them fixed anything.
So I guess, flashing back to stock and bringing it to a repair station is the last chance I have?

[Q] No sound in call, only speaker call/earphone works

Hi all, Someone have this problem?
I'm facing this 'no sound in call, only speaker call/earphone works' issue.
Even for media playback there is no sound in loudspeaker mode(Mx player, Youtube app,radio..) but earphones work.
So I'm trying to factory reset it won't work.
Thanks in advance for any help / advice you can off!

Wow, l am Nexus 5 owner and I have exactly the same fault. No fix as yet on the nexus. Was thinking about the moto x and came to check what issues the phone has. I suspect this is a universal android bug. I have done some googling and found at least half a dozen phones with this issue. It's like a virus.
Sometimes this can be caused by a defective headphone plug, tricking the phone into thinking something is plugged in when it's not.
