[Q] - Upgrade over OTA stalls halfway - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi Guys,
Hope someone can help me here. I'm currently on :-
- Stock asian rom (4.1.2),
- Bootloader unlocked,
- Rooted ,
- S-ON,
- CWM.
Hboot details are : 1.44 June 13 rel.
Now there is a new 4.2.2 rom release for my region (OTA_M7_UL_JB_50_S_hTC_Asia_WWE_2.24.707.1-1.29.707.16_R_P_release_325138_signedjx8qygc6il8gpe9q)
which I would like to upgrade to.
So I've done the following trying to upgrade:-
1). unzipped the 4.2.2 rom and extract the recovery.img from the zip file.
2). Flash the recovery area via fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
3). Boot back into the phone and perform the OTA upgrade.
4). Phone restarts and goes into recovery and installs with the progress bar. An icon shows 2 arrows shaped like a circle, one pointing up another pointing down with another arrow inside it pointing downwards.
5). progress bar shows it progresses up to around 30% and it just stays there . I've waited for more than 1hr but nothing happens. progress bar still stays the same.
6). Had to force shutdown via holding the power button and phone restarts, it automatically went into the recovery screen again with the progress bar but it progresses abit and then the 2 arrow icon changes into a triangle icon.
7). I force shutdown the phone again and it booted back to the phone home screen after a while as though nothing has happened.
Hope someone can point out what I'm doing wrong here.
Would love to have 4.2.2 in my phone. I would still like to stick to the stock rom for now so using other ROMs is out of the question.
Thanks in advance.

Might be the lost apps after unlocking the bootloader!
Did you install the lost APK's that are lost during the wipe because of unlocking the bootloader? (like the calculator, voice recorder, htc ringtone trimmer etc) These apps get lost during the wipe and are required to perform OTA's. So unzip the attachment, copy all the APK's to your phone and install all of them and then try to do the update and see if it works.

No these apps come with the HTC One out of the box, but when you unlock the bootloader these apps get wiped with your internal storage so you have to reinstall them. And no you do not have to relock your bootloader for the OTA update to work, you only need stock recovery, stock ROM and the missing apps, and if all of these are present you can do the OTA update.
You can read here about the deleted apps during unlocking the bootloader http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/smar...-unlocking-deletes-apps-blocks-future-updates

[Q] sense 6 OTA not working

Hello,
I have 4.4.2 installed on my One. I had rooted it with custom recovery. But as sense 6 is there I un-rooted it, locked it properly and removed tampered flag. Installed stock recovery and also put it in S-ON.
I can download OTA but while installing it is failing. It is showing red triangle and restarting it.
Can somebody help me to proceed further? If I go to HTC, will they update it?
I think , preload file is wiped when u unlocked ur device
Try installing ota manual and write the message

I am trying manually update it. But in recovery after red triangle it is restarting even after I press power and volume up button. So I am not reaching to recovery selection menu.

Did you flash the proper version of stock recovery? it Must be the same version as your phones currently installed OS.

Your problem is the current ROM is not 100% stock, some files are missing especially the preload.
1. What is your current software version no. ?
2. unlock the bootloader again and flash TWRP
3. flash a stock ROM.zip of your version no. or restore a proper nandroid backup
4. reboot and do the normal setup
5. reboot to bootloader
6. flash the stock recovery
7. reboot and do the OTA
So ... solve the no. 1 first.

Hey,
My software version number is 4.20.707.7 with HBOOT 1.56. I don't have stock ROM readily available anywhere like htc1guru etc., so I am downloading it from one of the xda thread.
Now
I will install TWRP,
reset stock ROM (there is also an option of installin stock recovery) once my download finishes.
Then again will lock boot loader,
put S ON back
update sense 6 OTA.

1. There is another file that you need to flash after that ROM zip.
See : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52981541&postcount=57
2. There is no need to lock boot loader and put S-On back (if now is S-Off) to do OTA update
Only stock recovery is needed

[Q] Couldnt Update to Lollipop, LF USA XT1063 Mirror

First of all I just bought Global Moto G 2014 (XT1063) from US Amazon and that was KXH21.85-23 (not updatable to Lollipop via shared OTA.)
So I did manage to unlocked the bootloader and flashed KXH21.85-17 and tried to flash the "Blur_Version.21.11.17.titan_retuglb.retuglb.en.US" which supposed to flash the Lollipop.
Unfortunately at first it failed to update me because "Printspooler.apk" mismatch the hash check. After attempt to flash (yes, I ignore the abort message and redo the process, It passed.... I don't know why) and stuck at some "xxx.apk" mismatch the hash again. After redo the process and bypass (for unknown reason that redo bypass the mismatch) I stuck at "velvet.apk" mismatch and this time It won't let me bypass and keep going on update to lollipop.
In my theory, Is it possible that I flash KXH21.85-17 from other country? Yes, any XT1063 (latin american, whereever on earth) supposed to flashable, but maybe the different country has slightly different apk. So that's why I failed the hash check.
Can anyone give me a URL or mirror to USA XT1063 for KXH21.85-17 that confirmed updatable to Lollipop? Since SBF-Dev and MotoFirmware is now down I couldn't find any.
I know what I'm saying is sound ridiculous, but I have no other theory that support my conspiracy anymore.
Hi @bankkung, I was facing similar problems. First you'd want to get back to stock kitkat which is up-gradable to Lollipop, so I would suggest downloading this file, http://180upload.com/bzl3ah1wov5g, which is 21.85-17, you can flash this file with fastboot by following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/index-guide-update-to-lollipop-android-t2941340. Next you'd want to download both Lollipop files, the first and second one. (The second one is the newest update that fixes memory management). First file: https://mega.co.nz/#!UoQ02KLQ!22OUNBctGLoAUOMd_frTRT9jgbB3tRPUa4pPqfesGho.. Second file: https://mega.co.nz/#!s8ZSVJDA!SqUWPZODvM4-GYuXo6MC2JWTmpE9_jdyqlH-ycWi78I. Download both of those files and put them somewhere accessible (like your SD card) so you can flash these in stock recovery, so after you downgrade to kitkat you can flash the first one, then boot up and then go back into stock recovery and flash the second file. I'd recommend factory resetting your phone after this to smoothen everything out.
If all else fails you can flash TWRP recovery using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-0-1-moto-g-2014-t2896165, and then download this TWRP backup of the latest Lollipop, and place it in /data/media/0/TWRP/backups/(your device name here). All of that can be done right in TWRP recovery using the file manager (no need to root your phone). https://mega.co.nz/#!59AAiQaR!cPUsNpI5j-ZaIMX10uiS93EJqpLxua-iwKHj30InX1U
I would really recommend the first option tho, just in case any other updates come you can easily upgrade your phone.
Hope I helped!

I'm thinking about getting some Nandroid backup (never used TWRP before but I think this methond you gave is the same thing as I think) to get straight from Custom Recovery to Lollipop.
So what I need to do in the 2nd method is
a
flash TWRP
Place TWRP Backup of XT1063 Lollipop
restore
reflash Stock Recovery + Locked recovery
Is this sound corrected?

Yes once you place the backup on your SD card, flash TWRP, reboot into recovery and go to advanced then go to file manager, then finish following the instructions above. Once you place it in the right place then you restore it. As of the stock recovery issue, it wouldn't make much sense to do that unless you followed the first option, where the stock recovery would actually be needed. But if you find a recovery image then yeah. If you do the second method you won't be able to receive updates nor update it manually unless doing the first method.. But the TWRP backup is the latest lollipop so enjoy!
If you still need help you can just flash TWRP recovery, and download this and flash it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...-stock-rom-t2970427/post57438355#post57438355

[Q] Can't side load update after i unlocked device

i got a little ahead of myself and used the unlock app from asus before i realized that i needed to be on at least JB 4.3 or i cant root to cm11 from jellybean 4.2.2. i have pulled my hair out trying to side load the update downloaded from the asus website, i am well aware that i lack the skills to trouble shoot this myself and rely entirely on these forums and youtube. i was hoping that someone has experienced this problem and can point me in the right direction for a fix or workaround.
As it is now, i am stuck on a brand new (Unlocked) asus tf701 US build JDQ39.US_10.14.1.44 with JB 4.2.2 and kernel version 3.4.35-g593cccf.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appriciated

Download the latest firmware for you SKU from Asus.
Unzip that file ONCE, resulting in another zip
Copy that xxxx-user.zip to the root of your internal SD. The system should recognize it and throw up a notification that an update is available.
Alternatively:
Rename the xxxx-user.zip to: T4_SDUPDATE.zip and copy it to the root of a fat32 formatted microSD.
Insert microSD and boot to recovery: Power +Vol Down, then press Vol Up on the flashing RCK
Stock recovery will boot and flash the update.
Make sure your tablet is charged for this!! You do not want the flash to get interrupted!!
That's the stock route. But since you are unlocked, you can also:
1. Fastboot flash CWM 6.0.5.1 to your device.
2. Reboot
3. Boot to recovery (now CWM)
4. Flash the US or WW 11.4.1.29 bootloader (packaged with CWM) in recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/transformer-tf701/development/rom-t2999102
5. Reboot
You will see a blue progress bar filling up (the bootloader and recovery get installed), then the tablet will reboot again. At this point hold the Vol Down button to enter the bootloader menu and then enter recovery.
You could try to boot to system here, but I don't know if the KK bootloader you just flashed would boot your JB rom.
6. Flash your desired rom in recovery
Obviously the stock route is safer

Try re download the zip (or try an other rom)maybe you just got an false download. i also had some trouble with my m7 back in the day.
But in your case now you are stuck with no os or bootloop, i give you as advice to follow an soft unbrick method it worked for me, or if you have an usb otg cable and usb or and usb otg thumbstick, put the rom on that usb and connect it to your phone and then try to flash it (if your using twrp you have an option to choose from wich storage you want to use)
Also a piece of advice, when flashing roms, kernels etc please have your phone charged above 50% (just in case).

Can you please post the output of
Code:
fastboot getvar all
please remove your imei and serial number.
Depending on which variant of the M7 you have you probably just need a different version of recovery to install a CM rom. I think they prefer TWRP 2.7.x.x. Post the getvar and we can see what you have. then I can give you a better informed instruction. :good:
P.s also check the md5 of the rom zip you downloaded. Use this tool www.winmd5.com the correct md5 should be listed with the link you downloaded the rom from
failed to mount /dev/block/blah blah blah = needs "block:by-name" support which twrp 2.6.3.3 doesn't have
everything explained here
So update your recovery
and do what danny said above so he can confirm you have the right rom/recovery for your device.

Your getvar looks fine this rom should work fine with your device. Download this version of TWRP https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358561860 (2.7.1.2). dropthe file in your fastboot folder and flash it with fastboot.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "name-of-recovery".img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Once thats done reflash the rom with the new version of TWRP. It should flash just fine :good:

There are a number of ways to return to stock software. You can simply flash a stock rom through twrp or use a stock nandroid. look for rom that match your version main. 7.19.401.22
I think there is even an lollipop 7.19.401.22 RUU for your device but I'm not sure if it will work with s-on though because it's a zip but it certainly wouldnt hurt to try it though. You will need to relock your bootloader and flash it with fastboot.
I'll edit this post with links when I find them unless some one beats me to it

Sorry I am at work so availability is scetchy. I found the ruu but it's for the older 7.19.401.2 lollipop, this won't work for you because your s-on. Downgrading firmware is only possible with s-off.
You can use this stock rom though http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one/development/rom-100-pure-stock-5-0-2-7-19-401-2-t3044041 just flash it with twrp. The thread recommends TWRP 2.8.5.X no need to relock the bootloader or anything silly, just flash it like any other rom :good:
You'll notice that this rom is also for the older 7.19.401.2 so you will need to install the last OTA update to bring your rom in line with your firmware. Flash this recovery with the same method as twrp. (Stock recovery required for installing the OTA) http://sourceforge.net/projects/htcone/files/Recovery/STOCK/7.19.401.2_recovery.img/download reboot then just go to Settings>About>Check for updates.

Okay try this. Download the OTA but select the option "Install Later" connect your m7 to your pc and browse your storage. In the download folder on your phone you should find the OTA in zip format. Copy it to your pc.
Now open the OTA zip on your pc. Inside you'll find another zip called "firmware.zip" extract it then open it. Inside you'll find a recovery.img. extract the recovery file and flash it with fastboot. Now reboot to android and continue to install the OTA. :fingers-crossed:

Yes you will need to unlock the bootloader to flash the recovery, Dont forget to fastboot erase cache after flashing the recovery that is cruicial. You don't need to be relocked to install the OTA though.
When you select install now, the device should reboot to the Stock Recovery. At first the screen will just be black for a short while. Then you'll see an image of a phone with a Green ring and download arrow. If you hold Volume up and press the power button you will see the Stock Recovery and its progress in installing the OTA.
I'm not sure why your device was hanging on boot after installing the OTA. Maybe a bad recovery.img. that's why I say to get the recovery from the OTA file.
its still not working so i mite just install twrp and restore to cm12.1

Your still stuck with this? Try starting the process over, but do not relock your bootloader at any point.
Wipe system data and cache partitions with TWRP Advanced wipe
Flash the Rom with twrp as a clean install.
Reboot and download the OTA. Choose install later, then copy the OTA to your pc. Extract the Stock Recovery and flash it with fastboot. Reboot and install the OTA.
But do not relock your boot loader. Because when you unlock the bootloader, it wipes the device including the data/preload folder. If the preload folder is not intact the OTA will fail

Just a little would be great

Hello,
To start i'm familiar with android, rooting, custom roms etc. But now I have this very nice new phone this Z3 Compact. A really nice phone but i want more. I just can't get my phone downgraded to .93 firmware to root it without unlocking the bootloader. But i some way it just won't boot properly after flashing one of those. Know i've tried .264 firmware and that one just worked fine.
Mayby you guys could help me out.
I've already managed to update te latest drivers with an unsigned drivers with windows 10 so they are fine...
Hi there
I have had success with doing what you are trying to do.
Search for the file: D5803_23.0.A.2.93_Customized CE1.ftf - it came as a zip but I can't find the link now, it's on here somewhere in the development or original development part of the z3c forum.
And flash it using flashtool64, being sure to check boxes for wiping APPS_LOG AND USERDATA and when it asks if you want to use script, click no.
After you have successfully booted into that firmware, carefully follow instructions for giefroot to gain root access via USB and your computer.

Somebody else will have to help you from there because I could not work out how to upgrade out of that old firmware without losing root. I ended up unlocking the bootloader and flashing viper-x which is pre-rooted marshmallow rom by Jenkins. I then applied DRM restore and it appears to have worked...I got the phone as a hand-me-down so I don't really care about losing warranty. It already had a smashed back.
Good luck.
You'll end up unlocking that son of a ***** some time ;p
I already had that file, that you recommend, it didn't work, but i'll try it again. Mayby it's a corrupt file.
Hope it is!
EDIT
Thanks m8 don't know what i was doing wrong but hey it worked! Guess a corrupt file mayby.
Ok,
I know want to backup my DRM files, but it says it can't start ADB server and offcourse the check for SU binary FAILED and also the request for root permission. But my phone is rooted, tested with root checker!
Any stepps i missed mayby?
Problem solved, I had to restart my Pc in order to start ADB deamon normal!
From this guide
40 Flash the pre-rooted fw (flashable.zip) from the recovery (touch "install zip", select /storage/sdcard1/flashable.zip then confirm install) on the phone, then power off the phone (DO NOT REBOOT)
41 To power off, go into the "power options" and hit "power off" (dont do "reboot in flashmode" DO power off)
42 Unplug USB (yes this is required, DO IT)
43 Open Flashtool and select the non-pre-rooted fw (this is 23.1.A.0.690), but DESELECT system: in "EXCLUDE" make sure you check the checkbox next to "SYSTEM", flash it.
44 press volume DOWN and plug USB cable while keeping volume DOWN pressed, when flashing starts, stop pressing the volume button
45 After flash is done and when flashtool tells you to, remove USB cable and start the phone
46 Congrats and enjoy, you made it to the end! you now have latest + recovery + root and backups of your DRM keys! (and of course all DRM functions enabled)

I'm currently on firmware 23.0.A.2.93 and rooted but this is android 4.4.4 and i want 5.1.1 as mentioned below.
I've downloaded a pre rooted firmware and put it on my sdcard [Rom][5.1.1][D5803]Pre-Rooted+++XZDR+2.8.21+[23.4.A.1.264]+-+BAL.zip.
I took a pre rooted firmware Newer then the guid listen to...
Is it now possible to just take this stock firmware D5803_23.4.A.1.264_1289-4696_R8C.ftf
How do i need to setup flashtool is this ok?
https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=AC16F01210B5FE5C!119&authkey=!ADFqguAuL4wnEps&v=3&ithint=photo%2cJPG
And why do we need to flash a stock firmware again without the system? Isn't this pre rooted firmware not enough ?
It would be great for some little help!!
I can guess why you don't want to unlock your bootloader, if its because you don't want to lose Sony's camera functionality and post image processing along with X-Reality
--------------------------------------
>Backup your DRM Keys using backup-ta get it here
>Unlock your bootloader via Sony's Website
>Flash any custom kernel with recovery pre-installed
>Flash SuperSU latest zip
>Flash this zip file to restore DRM Functions ( credits to @jimRnor )
>And you have a perfectly rooted phone with busybox installed
------------------------------------------
If you are still on kitkat ( Firmware .93 ) its very easy to get 5.1.1, just download a .246 (5.1.1) custom rom found in the Android Development Section, most custom roms are pre-rooted meaning you can flash them and still have root access on your device.
All you need to do is achieve root by using GIEFroot, and afterwards install NUTs Lockeddualrecovery so you can flash the rom. ( Take Note this only works for the .93 firmware [KK] )
If you plan to you use flashtool you cannot gain root on lollipop unless you have unlocked bootloader. Flashtool's main purpose is for locked bootloader devices to recover faster from bootloops and the like.
