[Q] How to maintain the speed of your phone - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I bought my Galaxy S 1, I had the intention of using this for a long time. Now, it's actually three years old, and I am struggling keeping it fast.
For a long time, I made sure I ran the most recent firmware. But somehow, it kept getting slower. So I thought it was because the new firmwares were increasingly more bloated, so I went back to 2.3, and stuck with that for a long time untill I started having too low API issues.
So I decided to give the latest Cyanogenmod a try again. And to my surprice, it was blazing fast!
Untill I installed the google apps, which is quite essential. But then, we are back to the old behaviour, with several seconds for opening / swithing certain apps.
My take on this is just that the phone doesn't have enough memory available to keep all the apps in memory, and therefore has to swap far too much.
So how would I maximize the usable life time? I don't want to go back to an old android as I would get the API issues, and the new google apps are too memoryintensive.
And I really, really don't want to get a new phone, because I think a phone should last more than three years, especially when it's only a software issue.

Make sure you deactivated google now.
Try the app Greenify. It can force apps to sleep and only wake up when you need them. It's extremely useful for apps like Facebook which needs a lot of ram and keeps the cpu awake.

Flash a custom kernel like Semaphore. I think it's the best out there and try v6 Supercharger.

I went back to ICS and have a smooth phone. On JB with touchwiz it was laggy from time to time and i had reboots.
Now everything is good.
Would JB without google-now fast like ICS?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app

I'm quite happy with slim-ICS. It's based on CM, but stripped of any excess stuff, and it uses a different kernel. There is also a jellybean version for the i9000, but that's got a few issues. So I'd stick with slim-ics if I were you.

[Q] Is my Galaxy S more laggy than everyone elses?

I've had a 16gb Samsung Galaxy S on Three in the UK since they launched last year, and it's the only Android phone I've used.
It's pretty laggy, but since I'd read a lot about Galaxy lag online, I assumed this was to be expected.
However, I had to help a colleague with a problem on their HTC Wildfire today (a lower spec phone, as far as I know), and was amazed how much more responsive than my Galaxy S.
It didn't seem to show any of the laggy, hanging-ey behaviour I experience. I have more apps installed than the Wildfire, but I'm quite careful not to install anything that's going to run at startup or cause problems (mostlly just games, no widgets, etc.)
As an example, if I turn the phone on clean, wait for everything to be loaded and ready (media scanning to finish, etc.) then poke the "Market" button, it takes 28 seconds for it to be loaded and responsive. Close that, poke the Facebook button, over 20 seconds until I'm shown the news feed. Sometimes when the phone rings on my desk, I literally won't be able to get it to respond enough to answer the call before the caller hangs up. If I try to switch from program to program, I end up getting quite a lot of frustrating 20-30s hangs and pauses. This is all on a decent wifi connection, so the problem isn't data related.
The question is - how laggy should a Galaxy S be? Would it work better if I added an SD card (with the 16gb phone memory, I didn't see the need)? Is it worth installing a lagfix under Froyo (I tried one back on 2.1, but didn't notice a huge amount of difference)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I think its sometimes very busy rebuilding it's wifi connection. Or some other process.
Am not sure.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I didn't see any speed difference with SD card IN/OUT so i don't think you will have faster phone by inserting it (SD card).
Why don't you try a reset and see if that works? Also are you on eclair or froyo because that would make a world of difference if you upgraded
I just got my sgs from bell Canada last Tuesday. It has all stock with launcherpro and a few Widgets. So far (knock wood) its been a big step up over my HTC dream. I experience maybe 10 seconds of startup lag and then for the rest of the day its awesome. My firmware version is the newest one bell offers (jl2 Frito). What android version are you running?

That's exactly my experience. The only way to solve it is with a good lagfix and/or flashing JPY firmware
This will get almost instant loading of apps and only minor lags when switching apps. It's still slow when scrolling icons and such... my previous phone, iphoe 3g, is still faster than this crap-phone
Cheers,
Soulbrighter
My Galaxy S was laggy as hell brand new out of the box. Sometimes it would hang for what seemed like 10 seconds. I didn't like the Samsung launcher anyway, so I did my homework, made sure I could get into 3-button download mode, and then rooted, wiped and flashed a custom Froyo ROM. I've tried a few ROMs since then and have landed on Insanity with EXT4 lagfix.
Now my Galaxy S is _awesome_ ... I don't even bother overclocking it, everything is smooth.
try a task killer and set it up to auto kill when screens goes off done a few tests with it ,one with no killer and one with and the one with was faster and had no lag fix running too go to the market and get quadrant standard try it for yourself and see
What's the current firmware you're using ? I suggest flashing to JPY and testing it out.
Update to JPY!
If not possible, install a lagfix on your current ROM/kernel.
The amount of lag you describe is terrible, I have never seen it that bad...
I don't think the lag should be that bad, I did experience some occassional lag back on eclair, but never exceeded 5-10 seconds. Usually after loading whatever that app was once, it'd be okay on the next open too.
Since I've upgraded to JPY i see 1-2 second lag extremely rarely.
Maybe you can get a task manager and see if anything is hogging memory?
Thanks for all the responses. The firmware is FROYO.XXJPO, so I'll definitely try flashing to JPY and will report back! Thanks so much for the tip!

[Q] CM10 too much for I9000 ?

Hi everyone
Recently, i've updated my i9000 from cm9 to cm10. But i found it a little bit laggy, there is too much data run in the background and my phone can't just handel it. Some app don't work anymore (i have some message after an unsuccefull update saying "out of memory").
Do i have to wait for further updates or should i go back to the latest CM9 ?
PS: Is there any tips to prevent the shuting down signal problem with the i9000 ?
Hey,
I've had the same feeling about CM10 being laggy on my I9000. Hopefully it's just another bug.
And it is a well known issue that some apps aren't still running yet.
I went back to CM9.1 which runs really smooth. I'm gonna wait for a CM10 stable version and check if it's still laggy.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
Yust move apps to SD, CM10 has a new partition layout.. That solve the problem of low space
Try elitemovil rc12.1 which is faster and smooter than stock sgs3
GT-I9000 cihazımdan Tapatalk 2 ile gönderildi
You should try the new nightlies, hardly any lag at all.
All jellybean roms get laggy no matter what you do, I tried most of the JB roms and I used HellyBean for a while with super launcher (a custom supercharge for galaxy s) and it kept working fine because somehow by flashing a new rom version often the phone would stay fine (wasn't just wipe cache and dalvik)
But I'm now back to ICS because even if most of the time the phone is doing fine, when you need it the most it starts failing even overclocked at 1.4 and with performance mode and swap, so I will wait 11 days and buy the nexus 4 !
Jelly bean runs fine on my phone to be honest. No lag or nothing. Only ROM that's ever lagged is hellybean.

On X-Bean 3.0 + Semaphore 2.5.0s here. LiveOc 120, ondemand ui, noop/sio, big mem 404mb, rasd 1024. Running smooth & stable here. No lag, reboots etc whatsoever

My experience is the exact same as the one you quoted.
I believe the clue to having a stable jb is to avoid most of the non-vanilla settings. I.e people come in various jb threads claiming bugs and unstability, while having oced, deep idle, custom kernels with experimental settings, not having wiped, flashed the wrong package - lots of issues that are experimental and not stock and stable.
The question of what is stable is relative, but I'm convinced that the ability to read, knowledge, proper flashing and simple logic would help avoid 9 out of 10 "unstable" jellybean experiences.
I am aware this might come over as a bit condescending, and I guess that's partially true, but it's not directed at any particular person here.

people, CM10 is the best. I've never had such a great rom, I mean, the SGS I is old, but with CM10, oh boy... I've never had such a good battery life, such a smooth rom, and non laggy ( helly bean was a disaster, it lagged a lot and very few updates).
Well, here is my settings:
-> CM10 latest nightly
-> JB hugemem patch (391mb ram and 720p recording still working)
-> Rom Slimmer
-> Semaphore kernel 2.5.0s:
.......- oc 1140 MHz
.......- SIO
.......- Smartassv2

i cant believe that so many ppl are busting HB.
laggy disaster?
first of all, HB is a CM10 too.
and beside this HB isnt laggy!
sometimes it depends on the phone, cos a SGS1 is not a SGS1. so many differences available...
best is, just try some JB ROMs and decide for urself!
I never had problems with CM10 . Run smooth .
I think is the best ROM i had experienced on my SGSI .
I installed slimbean (cm10 based) recently on my i9000m and its a tad laggy when I am pushing it but overall its better than the last stock GB rom that I had been on for a long time (got tired flashing this and that). And its stable too. Overall the switch has been nice, for the main reason that I have less of a desire for the SGS 3 (hey there's always the 4 one day right?)
My experience with cm10.1 has been roller coaster. To day it is fast and smooth but yesterday it is leggy and gets stuck. I frequently get popups of applications not responding etc. The i click wait and it gets done.
Before you throw me with rotten tomatoes let me give you the steps that i followed.
Got a brand new i9000 from from a warranty claim a month ago.
Flashed cm10.1 nightly using Cwm after having to work around a few bugs with the new heimdall program not being compatible. But with CWM on I no longer needed the pc.
Download a nightly (26 Feb)
So did a factory reset and wiped everything. Flashed cm10.1 nightly again just to make sure. Then loaded a modem that seems to work for my area. The modem is a XXJVR and is a ICS modem. then flashed Google app for jb 4. 2.2.
Rebooted and logged in. Restored all my sms using sms+ backup and restore
Installed all my preferred application from play Store.
It started nice but soon became slow and large.
So I updated to 10.1m2. Same problem.
At this moment it is workable. It takes about 6 counts to respond to changing from portrait to landscape. If i turn it one the home screen takes about 2 counts to get updated and responsive.
Holding the home button gives you the recent application list. It takes about 2 counts to respond with a vibration and then 2 to 3 more counts before the menu pops up and the list of recent applications have been populate. I don't know if this is normal but 5 counts feels forever when you decide to do something and need to wait for the system to be ready.
I am not over clocking and I am running no custom kernels.
The notification bar at first comes down in jumps. If i do it again it is smooth.
But the biggest frustration is typing. The lag between presses and haptic feedback seems to be random. It is always under a half a second but when you want to type you never know if it got the press or not. Just as you think you need go repress the letter updates.
Battery life is also erratic. Yesterday the phone was uncomfortable hot in my pocket all day. Battery did not make 14h. Today it is cool and it is at 73 % for 9h.
The main battery life is taken by android OS and screen. Not calls or any of the chat apps that I use. Yesterday Android OS took half my battery life.
Going to apps the zoom is jumpy and sliding jumps. If i do it again it is smooth.
And today is a good day.
Any suggestions what I can do to improve the performance? Except getting a new phone.
H
I don't think I can quite relate to that, my phone runs CM10.1 quite well...
Had to be said though that I can feel my phone struggles running it, pushing the limits pretty hard.
My phone has the slow RAM, unfortunately, I'm sure a lot of the people posting stories of glory are ones with the faster version.
That said, I could never in a million years go back to an earlier version, I know my phones limits and work around them without too much trouble, mainly browsing (using Chrome) is the one thing my phone struggles with.
But regarding your erratic phone behavior, have you installed a startup manager and better battery stats?
Android battery stats doesn't always do a very good job of reporting exactly what apps or background processes are draining over time...

It been quite some time now, but have you been able to fix your erratic behaviour? Cause I'm experiencing something similar.
I tried Slim JB & Fishears Rom so far. Right after flashing, without any apps, the roms seem to be running smooth but Slim JB soon became laggy so I tried out Fishears Rom which seemed to behave smoothly even after installing some apps.
But after several month of usage the system slowed down almost as much as it was with Slim JB.
As both of them are based on CM I guess it's a general problem that the SGS 1 just can't handle the new Rom + big amout of apps. Sometimes it runs relatively smooth if I cleared RAM etc and didn't start any apps, but as soon as I for example listen to music in the background everything just becomes laggy :-/
I guess after 3 years my SGS1 is just too old now^^

Hi. No I gave up. My first SGS1 was amazing and did not behave like this. I think it had faster ram. Due to some issue it was replaced under warranty. The replacement looks the same but it is very frustrating. I am running stock rom now 2.3.4 with almost nothing installed. But it find that it is a pain. Calling takes long to actuality start to dial. The screens are smooth but when you do things. Like flip between apps or go to dialler it is almost unusable.
I think Samsung release more expensive variations in the beginning and then keep the look the same but drop the cost of the handset to the end.
Hi.
I'm a noob in this custom business and i have a i9000 and i just flashed CM10.1.2 and everything is ok but i want to use igo and after install i get an error about the sd card. How can i use igo?

[Q] Is it possible that my D3 has a problem that prevents running other roms?

I'm running SS 3.05 and have been able to flash several roms (all GB because I need a camera) that others rave about. I have not gotten good performance out of any of them. The worst ones seem to cause almost non-stop force closes on apps while the "best" ones function but my phone runs very hot even when not being used. Just tried Steel Droid 5 over the weekend and I at least got it up and running but the phone was noticeably hot even when just sitting on the counter with the screen off.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled Safestrap a couple of times, deleted and recreated rom slots repeatedly and have just had no success. Is it possible that there is something weird about my phone? Is it just wonky? It does run normally on the stock rom, or at least as normally as any D3 can run but I'd love to run a meaner, leaner rom on my phone.
If anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them.

Weird. Minimoto ran great for me. I wonder if it's an app you install?
Maybe you just have a bad app or two. You can try loading the phone stock and install only an app or two at a time and see if the phone runs better. Maybe after loading one particular set of apps you'll notice a problem.
I run minimoto as well. I don't get the miracle battery savings that others report - mine is essentially the same as running stock for me - but it is rock-solid stable, unlike stock, which tends to go wonky on me after about 5 days or so.

I have noticed something like that, I´m on XT862 and I have better baterry performance on Steeldroid 5.0 and If I give a try with Minimoto I have noticed higher battery drain and hot back of my device. So I always went back to SD 5.0. Strange that people have different experiences =).

Why does every ROM I try get worse with time?

Okay so once again, another ROM has got bad after 2 weeks. FXP 349 build has got to be pretty much unsuable, the unlock button doesnt respond, and the UI crashes for a laugh now. Getting very frustrated with this phone. Its getting harder to not smash the hell out of it with a hammer.
I must be doing something wrong, but every ROM Ive used just degrades in performance to the point where I cant take how laggy it is, Ive missed phonecalls because the UI cant wake up and show the incall UI fast enough. There has to be something deep in this phone which causes bad performance.
Im moving to VanirAOSP, as it says in the title of the ROM that its fast and smooth. Lets see if it can outlast any other ROM I've tried.
Sorry for ranting, I just dont get it, is there some secret setting that everyones using and not telling about? Ive tried stock kernel with CM, williams kernel with CM, stock kernel with CrystalPA, same again with williams kernel. Art or dalvik, it seems to make no difference, no matter what, the UI will bug out. Im not moaning at the devs because I know the work they do is hard and is much appreciated. I just wish I knew why this phone cant last 2 weeks without needing to be wiped!

I have a feeling you are installing too many apps running in background at once. My phone is super smooth, fast and responsive. I just either close apps after I am done with them (kill process) or don't install trash. Deleting some in-build rom apps which you never use could also help.

Well VanirAOSP has sorted out my issues for now it seems. I dont really install many apps to be honest, I use the Micro PA Gapps package and I then remove Google Now Launcher, freeze the preinstalled launcher3, install Nova launcher. I have only 17 installed apps, Facebook is the only real hog app I think, I install messenger and then freeze it to get around the Facebook app not letting me use chat within the app. I do also play Marvel Contest of Champions, and I make sure to clear all running apps before playing games. I just feel like now on this ROM, the ram is clearing properly, swiping away apps is freeing up the RAM now.
I think the difference is that this ROM is based on AOSP, whereas before, I was using CM ROM's or Crystal PA which is pretty feature rich. Ill stick with this and see if it will last. This ROM just feels noticeably faster and the UI hasnt crashed once yet, even with a theme on!

Well the way im doing it, i dont actually use messenger, its installed but frozen/disabled so it isnt used, this allows me to chat inside the facebook app but the only downside ive found is that the chat notification dont seem to be working. This was a fix I picked up while browsing the net. Ill try out this app if I can find it, the name would make it much easier to find

And? Are you still satisfied with this rom after a while?
Well the 'ROM decay' creeped back in. I tried to counter it by cleaning things up but I had a few problems, nothing was working, I tried fix permissions from ROM toolbox and then my phone stopped booting, tried hard reset with the button on the back, couldn't get into recovery, pretty much died on me. I eventually got into recovery and caches wipes and that didn't work, I tried reinstalling the ROM and gapps without losing my data, it just got stuck on the boot logo, then recovery stopped working again, I eventually got in and had to wipe data, reinstall ROM and I finally got the phone booting again.
I'm not satisfied to be honest, its frustrating that I have to wipe the phone or reflash the roms so often, never has a phone been this bad for me. I'm selling it and moving to the OnePlus One in a few weeks, this phone has been nothing but headaches.

IF you are going to stay or at least try for the last time, I suggest formatting /boot but please be careful as I dont really know what will happen if you reboot the device while /boot is empty.
As in PC, an empty boot partition will leave an inaccessible Operating System. If in phone they are the same then I guess it can be much repairable.
IF again it fails and you are still staying I suggest extreme formatting by using the PC Companion and start fresh.
These are still suggestions and I hope you will have a headache free adventures with One plus. Good luck

Thanks for the advice, For me, its the lack of RAM on this phone which is my problem. After a reboot, i have about 300mb free ram, and as soon as I have more than one simple app running (or just one game), ill get a very slow UI, and I have to be very careful and patient with it or it will crash. To me, that is terrible, why would anyone think this is acceptable for a smartphone to just about be able to run an app and hold the interface together. When the System UI crashes, or the lockscreen, It frustrates me so much! The most important part of a touchscreen phone is the UI, without it, your just staring at a blank screen.
There has to be something deep in this phone (the kernel?) where its memory management is broken in someway, ive never experienced a phone be so unstable with 1GB of RAM. When I bought it, I was really hopeful it would be good, it was higher specced than my last phone, it had 4g, it had jelly bean updates coming out, and at the time, a future update to kitkat, and we had support from FXP and CM. What weve actually got is a half baked attempt at 4.3 by Sony, a cancelled 4.4 update, and weve been moved to legacy support by FXP when CM11 didnt even get to the stable point. We may have lollipop builds coming out which could be the savior for this phone, but im sick of waiting for something which might not happen. I just want to be able to rely on my phone and not spend half my screen on time waiting for something to crash and then restart.
Back on my Optimus L9, it has only 768MB ram and a lower clocked dual core CPU but that could run CM10 fine, I never ever had UI crashes, ever! I got lag from time to time, but nothing crashed. Thie SP has 100mb+ more RAM available and a higher clocked CPU but it feels so much more clunky and unstable compared to the L9, it should be the other way round. On my nexus 7 2012 which is similarly specced to the SP (apart from the tegra quad CPU) I again, had no UI crashes, I had lags, but at least things didnt crash. My friend has the Xperia L, which is lower specced than the SP and is only on 4.1, but again, he never gets UI crashes and generally, his phone can run games smoother than I can even though he has lower specs!
This phone, for me, just doesn't fit my needs. It cant really multi task how I would expect it to, and having the phone pretty much lock up if its writing to internal storage is a joke, installing an app from the play store, and not being able to bring down the notification bar to look at the progress without causing problems, to me just feels like something is seriously wrong. The lightbar was the only thing ive really liked on the phone to this day. At first, I was loving this phone, it was great, the only problem I had on 4.1 was that I couldn't play Injustice because it would close the game after a while. I thought, ill wait for software updates, hopefully Sony will fix it. Then the 4.3 updates came but they were buggy, but I held onto hope because at the time, 4.4 was in the pipeline. Then we got a few more 4.3 updates which did fix some bugs but this RAM problem was still there. So I gave up on Official software and tried out custom stuff. I've tried modified Stock ROM's where you get more features but the same inherent problems are there. Ive tried CM, but there hasnt been a stable release of 4.4 and the snapshot builds have also stopped. Vanir ROM is designed to be stable, its one of their highest priorities with their builds. And I definitely feel the difference, but this lack of RAM becomes more obvious with time, this week, I've seen my UI crash 4 times.
Ive done what you've said about fully starting fresh with PC companion Ive flashed stock FTF's and Ive done the PC companion method, Ive done that at least 5 times in the past. When I first do it, it seems like everything is okay. But without fail, after a month of use (usually less) the phone will bog down and the RAM issues return. Maybe my specific device has faulty RAM or something or maybe the storage is messed up. All I know is, this phone has not been enjoyable for me to use, lower specced phones are out performing it, and its value has plummeted in trade in stores like CEX, my old L9 that I traded into my local CEX is being sold for more money than an SP is.
Im sorry to rant but ive just had enough of this phone.
Ive got to flash the phone fully back to stock for when I sell it, so ill go back to full stock, and see if it will last.

Its okay and I have read all of your post
It quite saddens me that some people isnt actually having fun with their SP. Shockingly enough, my SP does not face those mentioned problems (heck most of those that appears in the forum) but some exceptions goes to Stock Rom bugs and game problems.
This is my first android phone, I actually always wanted one but i am a teenager - i dont make money. But since my dad bought me this lovely sp, I have finally gained so much knowledge about android and it somehow further strengthens my Linux knowledge.
Maybe I was just lucky. Perhaps. But who knows if something is still wrong with my phone
I understand things will get older - people will buy new phones, developer will stop developing, people who got bored of customising etc. In fact I have seen so much decline of SP since the discontinued 4.4 update.
This is my first smartphone and I love it. It has an awesome community and awesome devs, but now it is getting old. Which quite sad to me.
I am saving for Ara phone (i hope it doesnt fail like smartwatches do). Since you are quite involved with many developments (i mean you customise your phone much like others), I hope your transition to a new device is a breeze. And above all, doesn't have the bugs that SP has.
LOL, I thought I was the only one with a "faulty SP".
My XSP has the exact same problems as yours. It is very annoying to change ROMS (or wipe data) every month.
The RAM is SO BAD on my SP, even though it only have 1GB of RAM, it should be a lot better. I didn't have such problems on my Motorola Defy + as I have with the XSP.
I thank so much that we have very nice developers, always trying to improve our user exp., but for some people like me it's difficult.

Well atleast you have started on a better android device than my first one. My first was a ZTE Skate and this was back in the gingerbread days. 512MB RAM, Single core CPU, barely any internal storage. Im very used to using android in a minimalist way, but the SP just takes it to a whole different level for me, i cant take it! Im glad that you arnt having all the same problems Im having. The fact that not everyone is getting the problems is a frustration because unless its a widespread problem, people wont really be pulling together to fix it because they dont understand/experience the problems. It has to be some kind of manufacturing defect, maybe certain batches of RAM/Storage chips used in the SP are defective/bad performers.
I hope the XSP continues to work well for you!

Its a very weird problem, but its definitely RAM/Storage related.
I agree with you about the devs, I appreciate their hard work, it is great having all these ROM's to choose from when trying to solve the problems. It just seems it doesn't matter which ROM you are on, the problems will always be there. The problem must lie within the hardware or deep in the software side of things, beyond the ROM's like in the kernel or something. I dont know enough about those sides of a phone, but I can see just from using the phone, something isnt right.
It sucks that you are facing the same problems, but its nice to know im not alone in my experiences, its not just me.
If only we knew what the issue was, maybe there would be a chance to solve the issue.
I have the same problems with my phone exactly and am going to smash it with a hammer when I get a new phone. It is indeed so frustrating, I expect much more from sony!
i stopped to mess up with custom kernels, stock 207 is the best option.
Ondemand cpu governor + underclock to 1500mhz + greenify

Really not liking my nexus 6. Please help

So I got my nexus 6 last black Friday. I have mainly been running pure nexus since then. My issues with it are many.
Terrible battery life. I'm running greenify, tasker, amplify, and better battery stats. I have improved it somewhat but I would like to know I can get a day out if it. I am not a heavy user at all. I'm at 35% an hour right now but can get it down to 8-11%. The is screen off and not many wakelocks reported. Smh.
It is laggy as hell. Chrome takes a while loading websites, keyboard takes a while coming up and sometimes doesn't come up.
I'm running elite kernal at the moment with interactive governor. I also have xposed installed with a few apps.
Can anyone give me some advice?
ok so i would backup whatever needs backing up, flash back to the latest factory image and then see if the phone acts the same.
If it is still this abomination that you describe then get it replaced/warranty.
Try that report back, good luck im interested in the outcome.
I'd go with Skinpipe's advice. But don't load all those apps back on when you test. I'd bet you have an app gone rogue with wake locks or maybe kernel issues. Anyway with a fresh new factory image - and none of your current apps, you'll know.
Thanks I will try that and report back.

Stock unfortunately runs like crap no matter what I tried the closest I came to Nexus 5 smoothness was stock + Elite kernel with Blu-active CPU governor. battery was still kinda crap though.
If you really want smooth I'd recommend Pure Nexus rom + elite kernel w/ blu active. <-- This is that kind of combo where you actually follow instructions and make a backup of before every update because it's so good.

you do realize that "so good" depends on the user? and your so good can be my terrible. I guess I'm better off, because I can use any custom kernel, change up how the CPU works, and become happy instantly. I'd even recommend the op to learn about governors and schedulers, what they do, and how to adjust them and everything that goes with them. I also use pure nexus BTW, but with despair kernel. despair kernel because its extremely easy to get what you want out if your CPU with it.
Thanks for all the help. I reflashed stock N and ran it for a few days. Now I'm on stock N by rocketpanda and it running 1000x better. Battery life has greatly improved. I get close to a full day now maybe even more but I have only been using it lightly. It is snappier. I put on Nova launcher but I think stock launcher was snappier. I did have to up the min CPU freq because it wasn't waking from screen off correctly. Battery life still good though. I also clean installed all apps and left off a few that I use and will just keep those on my tablet (Bluetooth apps)
One quirk is keyboard popping up slow at times. I disabled the option of letter pop-up but still acts up.
Other issues I think are app/N specific. Google play games won't log into my account. Chrome still loads slow. Bluetooth won't always turn on after turning off.
I will look into governors since it is not as fast as my old note 3. I think there is some room for improvement.
Right now I'm happy though. Don't know how much of a fan I am of preview N since still figuring it out. I have no xposed install which is fine. I am off work next week so may try going back to PN.
