[Q] Wifi-Roaming-bug - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Like a lot of android devices my Samsung Galaxy S4 Active (SGH-I537) does not do WiFi Access Point Roaming (at least in my experience). I have 2 AP's with the same SSID on different channels 1 and 11. When I move about my house my GS4 will not drop the weaker signal and connect to the (now) stronger signal. I also use SIP and would love it if (assuming there IS a fix) not to lose my connection.
Does anyone know if the fix for the GS3 will work? That thread "FIX for Wifi-Roaming-bug" found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015482
I did try Wifi Strongest Signal from the Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.heleron.wifistrongestsignal ,but it didn't work or didn't work well. It kept turning my WiFi on and off causing very annoying notifications.
Thanks in advanced!!!

After many weeks of trials and errors I finally found a solution.
I am posting here for others to see.
First the problem the way I faced it:
I work in a company with a 10,000 square meters facilities.
What we wanted to do was to use our PBX that supports SIP calls and cheap android phones to make VOIP calls.
For this reason we installed Ubiquity access points and their controller software (free) and we used Zoiper (android free app) as a SIP client.
We tried many android devices with no success: Samsung Galaxy Note (n7000), Samsung Galaxy S4 (i9505), Huawai Y300 - 100, Vodafone (Alcatel) smart mini 875.
We also tested an Apple iPhone 4S that worked fine.
The problem that we had with androids was that we did not have "seamless wifi roaming".
We tried some android apps like "Wifi Roaming Fix" with no results as it was dropping the connection (and call) before reconnecting to a new AP.
Among others we sent an e-mail to Huawei to ask them if the have a model that supports 802.11r and they responded that they have G526.
We contacted local representative and asked for a demo device.
He sent us one and it worked fine.
Now we have 40 of them (cost 162Euro + VAT in Greece) and they all work without dropping connections.
Conclusion: the problem is on the device. It must support 802.11r.
Do you know of any other devices that support 802.11r?

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi problem

I have a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant device and a strange Wi-Fi connection problem.
It seems that the WiFi conneciton is being lost intermitently with no apparent reason. I ping the device, most of the time there is a 'Request timed out' and only sometimes a 'Reply from <address>'.
On the device side the connection behaves erratically as well, sometimes there is connection but most of the times there isn't. The strange thing is that under device's Settings->Wireless and network->wi-Fi settings the connection's status is "Connected" all of the time, signal strength is excellent, link speed is 54Mbps.
I had this issue on a native 2.1 Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant install, then decided to flash a custom 2.2 ROM hoping to end the mistery. The new custom ROM is an Axura21VE.zip and the WiFi connection problem is exaclty the same as before.
Does anyone have the same WIFi issue as I have? And yes, I did a search before posting this. In fact, I searched for several weeks and saw many SGS Wi-Fi problems being reported but either they are different or they are similar to mine with no solution. Since I need a stable Internet connection on the device for app development, next logical step would be looking at reverse USB tethering. Yet decided to post here before giving up on Wi-Fi.
For the record, the Wi-Fi acces point is under my control, i have a ASUS P5B-MX/WiFi i946GZ motherboard, windows XP sp3. I tried, I think,
every possible combination of Wi-Fi settings available. The only client device I have at home is SGS. At the office network, SGS is having the same
Wi-Fi issues, while a HTC Desire and many laptops don't.
here is what I just found out: if I do a constant ping form the device to google.com for example, then the conenciton is maintained all right. So, should I constantly ping something to maintain a decent connection? Is there a setting or something in Android OS I am missing?
I had this exact problem - changed my router and it works perfect now. Really weird and not an ideal solution but worked for me so far (touch wood!). Try playing about with your wifi config maybe, change encryption, channel etc. Good luck.
Hi, I'm having the same problem on my Galaxy S i9000 on Darkyy's v7.8. I never used to have this problem until I flashed the second to last release. The device says I'm connected to the network but I can't get any internet access. I tried reflashing my official firmware DXJPA, but I still no joy. I'm not really sure what to do.
YES... i have been searching for days. I feel I may have a similar issue. im connected, speed good, IP there.. no data, browser just hangs. seems to happen less in stock. (Rogers captivate, P10.1) also WiFi manager reads my WiFi channel off by 2!! so im set to use ch 9 on the router and WiFi manager on the captivate says its broadcasting on ch 7?? any ideas? ping to infinity??
side note: this happens on all routers and all roms. other galaxys on my network read proper ch... GF's Iphone see the right channel?? HELP..
I'm also having these problems, reposting my reply from another forum:
Just wanted to chime in that I am also having these problems with my samsung vibrant. Seems to only happen from my work router but happens very consistently. Wifi will work immediately after setting it up but after a short time period will stop working completely. It will say it is still on wifi but will in fact have no access to the local network or the internet. Stopping/restarting the wifi connection doesn't fix it. The router has to be manually 'forgotten' and then re-added for it to begin working again. (Update: sometimes this does not work either, in fact).
This is with a 2wire modem (standard issue by at&t) using WEP security in 802.11b/g mode.
Some people recommended switching from 201.11b/g to pure 201.11g. I tried this with no luck. It was also recommended to try to app 'wifi fixer'. This also did nothing to solve the problem. Given that it is my work router, I don't want to go changing the encryption and other crazy things as I'm not the only person using this router and it would break the connection for others.
MRSizzle in another thread (which xda isn't allowing my to link to) seemed to accurately describe the problem as such:
"It appears to be a driver issue with the Samsung base OS drivers in the phone. Possibly sleep policy is not operating correctly and the wifi radio is being disabled by the hardware and is not being controlled correctly by the software so the WiFI icon still appeers to indicate the phone is connected. Also the wifi signal is not being correctly reported. the signal appears to be attenuated more than it really is."
This description would line up with the OP's reports that repeated pinging will keep the connection alive.
Hi, I'm having the same problem on my Galaxy S i9000 on Darkyy's v7.8. I never used to have this problem until I flashed the second to last release
ASK DARKY its his rom and will know more .
jje
Anyone figure this out? I'm trying to use the Web Desktop app but can't because I can't even establish a connection with my phone!
Hi friends,
I have similar problem, but at first I easilly connected to Internet, but now I can connect to my WI-FI but no internet connection. I am not sure but maybe this has occur after updating to Android 2.2.
Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance.
explanation and apology
I was wrong in my assumption that it's an Android device problem. The problem was in the Asus motherboards embedded Wi-Fi access point. I bought a separate Wi-Fi router and now everything works like a charm.

[Q] Wifi problems with multiple router networks

I seem to be having pretty severe wifi issues on networks that are composed of a large number of routers (i.e. campus/business networks) where going between routers will result in the phone believing it is connected, but not being able to send/receive data. This is evidenced both by the lack of notifications/apps working, as well as the wifi icon in the quick toggle panel being orange (which indicates no data being sent/recieved, I believe) despite having full signal. This means that without any external indication that anything is wrong, my phone essentially does not work anymore until I turn the wifi off and back on. Previous phones (galaxy nexus, droid) as well as computers did not have this issue on the same network.
Has anyone else noticed this problem, and if so, found any way to get around it other than remembering to reset the wifi power every time you move between areas?
It sounds like there are multiple WAPs all using the same SSID, and Android is not requesting a new IP address when it disconnects from one WAP and connects to another. You could probably work around the issue using Tasker, and have it toggle Wifi off and on again any time Wifi is disconnected. I you go that route I would recommend using the trial version available from the developer's site, or one of the many similar apps that are available in the Play Store for free.
There may be something more to this though. Hopefully someone else has another idea.

I'm having the same issues both out in public and at my home. This issue didn't seem to exist prior to 4.4 update. Now I'm constantly having to toggle my WiFi on and off or toggle airplane mode and also hitting the symbol down at the bottom left on my phone and on my router at the same time. If someone has any information to correct this would be great. Like I said I never had this problem prior to 4.4.

Thanks for the suggestion! One question though: does the wifi actually "disconnect" when there is a handover between two routers of the same network? Is a handover while constantly connected something tasker could detect?

As far as I know, Android doesn't "roam" seamlessly from one AP to another even when the SSIDs are the same. I'm pretty sure Tasker would see this as Wifi being disconnected (albeit briefly). You could then tell Tasker to turn off Wifi for 5 seconds and then turn it back on again.

I finally got around to making a tasker script to do this, and tried it out for a few days, but unfortunately it does not seem to detect the changing between the different routers on my institute network as having the wifi disconnected, and thus doesn't solve the issue. It was a good idea to try though!
I've cross-posted the issue at the link below in hope motorola will see this, but if anyone knows a better way to report this, please let me know.

[Q] Faster tethering?

Newbie here with the Gear, sorry if this has been asked before but I googled for a while.
I have a rooted Gear with Null ROM and rooted phone. Bluetooth tethering is awfully slow though when I'm indoors since my phone gets crappy 3G/4G reception, but I have solid Wi-Fi -- the phone's apps all work great through Wi-Fi, but the bluetooth tether insists on trying to use cellular data even though Wi-Fi is there.
Is there any way to allow the bluetooth tethering to use both the 3G/4G as well as the Wi-Fi connection, whatever the phone has available?
Thanks!
It's limited to whatever your phone rom allows. E.g. international stock rom allows tethering via Wi-Fi where as most carrier rounds will only work with cellular data (if it is even an option)

Thanks! But why should it be limited by the carrier? I want to tether the actual Wi-Fi connection over bluetooth, not the cellular connection (because the Gear doesn't have Wi-Fi, but my phone does, and 95% of the time I'm indoors where I have much better Wi-Fi than cellular reception).
If it makes a difference, I bought my Nexus 4 directly from Google so it's stock ROM and rooted. If I have to change to some other ROM (e.g. Cyanogenmod) I'm willing to do that

maybe just a few words from my side - why do you need a faster internet connection?
i mostly use it just to sync new data like calendar, or to do list. even slow internet is enough to do that, as it's not a lot of information to be exchanged. if you are planning on streaming videos or so, prepare that your gear will die quickly..

For light use, faster internet means the device wastes less CPU cycles waiting for responses. It's going over bluetooth either way, so better the device get the data in a fraction of a second than say 20-30 seconds (literally; I get only GPRS and occasionally EDGE in my office, never 3G or 4G, but I have flawless Wi-Fi). In those 20-30 seconds I could have pulled the phone out of my pocket to check what came through.
Although in all honesty I bought the Gear to hack with, and there are lots of crazy ideas I want to do with it that want a fast internet connection. Yes, the battery will die quickly, but that's the price of early adoption; I just want to hack for now and hope that when battery technology becomes better I can continue to be living with my futuristic apps. For now I can live with a charging cable down my sleeve and an external battery in my pocket, but I don't want to use USB tethering since I want it to still be able to go while disconnected.

I meant carrier branded rom. But in theory, stock international roms should use wifi if connected, otherwise use data. Some roms don't allow wifi to be used for tethering (cellular data only)

Brendo is right. Stock roms often have wifi tethering via bluetooth enabled and can switch back and forth as need. I have not experienced laser fast result with either but as you states "for your needs", look for a phone with native bluetooth tethering. One that works well and is cheap is the Galaxy Grand II. I have one and it worked well. I use a Note 2 now with native bluetooth tethering via Verizon and it works with 4G but not wifi. Maybe someone will chime in with an international rom that has this capability.

Interesting. I have a Nexus 4 (directly from Google), and I'm surprised that if this feature exists that the Nexus 4 doesn't offer it. You'd think it'd be in Google's best interest given Glass and all.

This is very true as unfortunatly in the US, native BT tethering is often blocked via Carriers who want to charge for it. In theory, this shouldnt be an issue with the Nexus line, curious if the Nexus 5 can... I can confirm, first hand that the technology does exist for wifi bluetooth tethering but it may be that no US phone has this feature enabled, to date. It should be noted that my Galaxy Grand was an international model, specifically the Latin model, not the India model. I could acutually use the phone without a sim card to serve up bluetooth PAN via home wifi to my old Motoactiv Smartwatch while I was screwing around in the house.

You should include som info about the make and model of your phone if you wish people to help you....
Anyway, both my GalaxyS3 and my iPhone4S can easily be used to share WiFi with my Gear over Bluetooth. But it doesn't increase the speed much as this is limited by the BT bandwith between the phone and the Gear. Typically max 3Mb/s
I've got an N9005 rooted (X-Note 13) bluetooth tethering my null 23 gear, and on 4G I actually get speeds up to 5MB/sec, yet the gear rarely goes above 50kb/sec, which, for me, is too low even for a vague browsing . I highly doubt anything carrier specific, I just think bluetooth is slow...

WiFi Dropouts/Connection Errors :: SOLVED

So I originally purchased a LG G4.. after a week, the leather back started to wear on the corners.. in addition, it didn't have enough root support on XDA and once rooted, changing the DPI would crash basically every factory installed app on the phone.
One thing's for sure though, it (and about 6 other devices in my house ) had no connectivity issues.
I decided to exchange it for a Galaxy S6.
I was running into very weird random and frequent drop outs in connectivity to the internet. Instagram stopped loading the feed, chrome would give ERR_NAMENOTRESOLVED errors when clicking a link, etc.
I recently sold a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 and it had no issues like this.
So I swapped the device at the store thinking it was faulty. I also tried multiple roms and wipes
No resolution.
Once I brought the new device home I was having the exact same issues. My network is comprised of an Apple Airport Extreme in my office and an Airport Express in my living room.
After tweaking with router settings and changing channels on signals, etc, I was still having connection issues to the internet. Wifi would stay connected on the phone, but not reach any website, etc.
To resolve the issue, I finally downloaded DNS changer (root required) and used Google's DNS servers.
So far, I haven't seen the issue arise even once.
My thoughts are that the DNS is causing issues in the S6 when it switches between the 2 different routers. Sometimes I would receive a "ERR_CONNECTION_RESET" message on chrome as well.
Hopefully this helps resolve any issues someone might be having with their "extend a network" setup.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using XDA Free mobile app
Just kidding. Started running into same issues again.
I did end up fixing by making the Airport Express simply "connect to a wireless network" instead of "extend a wireless network."
While it doesn't extend my wifi anymore, it still provides connection to my xbox one in my living room.
Seems that the S6 doesn't like switching between routers on an extended network.

Bad wifi calling

So I am on t-mobile, and I also have one of the routers provided to me by t-mobile (I believe it's an Asus) , and I have noticed recently that my wifi calling has been sucking big time. It cuts in and out and says I need to connect to a wifi network, when I am connected. It's like it doesn't notice that there is a wifi connection. Anyone have suggestions as to what might help?
I would ask in the tmobile sub forum, they may have better input there. I'm still trying to graft this feature into the Korean Note 8 firmware so can't offer much help sorry!
It's been a while since I've used xda, and I didn't know there was a sub forum now. Thanks for the heads up.
