I was in the beach 2 days ago and I brought my xperia Z along. I decided that it was a good idea to take underwater videos and pictures above the water. They all looked great. The only problem is that, its been two days since that happened and my speaker is still muffled. It usually gets dry in a few hours, this time I'm worried it might have damaged for good. I believe that maybe little grains of sand made their way through the grill and are keeping the sound low or something else. Anyways, just wanted to ask if anyone can advise me on what to do. I had my C6002 since its release and have submerge it in numerous pools but never on a beach. Any help will be appreciated, thanks

I wouldn't recommend open the device, you could lose the water resistance altogether.
My only advice would be letting the device on rice for a while with the flaps open.
Anyway, my take on this subject is this:
I wonder now why everyone thinks that kind of water resistance will make the phone indestructible.
For me, that water resistance (not waterproof) just makes me feel more confident about my device surviving water related accidents.
Just taking the device to the swimming pool defeats its certification (2 m deep pools are not uncommon, you know), splashing, swimming, just moving around under water, or even worst jumping into the water violently just multiplies the pressure around your device by more than those 0.1 bar.

That would be my suggestion too. Try giving it a bath in nice clean water to rinse off any debris.

Yeah that was my first reaction. I actually left it submerged for about 15 and after that I rinsed it on the shower with no avail. I havent blow dried it, I've read somewhere that might help. But thanks for the suggestions. I'll leave it with rice tonight and see if I have something positive to report tomorrow.

After spending the night on a ziplock bag full of rise and turned off, I'm happy to report that the speaker is as good as new. I'm super happy. Now, there's one weird issue. Its in another thread, but suddenly I have dead pixels in my camera. See the light switch on the left and notice how there is a black dot on either side. These are persistent around every photo I take. Any thoughts?

There not dead pixels its a quiet common fault it minute pieces of the lens casing as a lot of users have reported the same ive even got some on mine.

FYI if you ever want to dry the speaker out use a can of compressed air to force the water out, i've been doing this for sometime without issue, and restores volume immediately,

You are probably going to eventually destroy the water proof membrane inside the speaker if you continue to do that. Not good advice.

Yeah man, pushing compressed air through there doesn't sound like a good idea. I'll gladly wait 2-3 hours or a bag of rice overnite. That's living dangerously right there

Well it's your choice but it takes a quick spray and it'd back to normal.
If you did it with 10 psi sure but this is can which is like 10 psi.
It's up to you but it's not much dissimilar to blowing it with your mouth

Amazingly, I left the phone over night on a bag of rice and not only did it fix the issue it had another unexpected effect. Now, when I wet the speaker its back to normal almost immediately. I was at a lake yesterday, used the phone to record under water, take photos, and guess what? It was fully loud each time almost immediately after I got out of the water. This phone hasn't seize to impress. I highly recommend to consider the rice. Often times, naturally aspired solutions are the better choice.

Hi,
Is anybody else experiencing a waterproofing fail in your Z1? I took it for a swim a few days ago and I just noticed that there's steam inside the camera lens. The vibration motor is also a bit odd. The steam in the camera lens sometimes goes away but then comes back. I tried going for the warranty but they said that it'll take at least 2-4 weeks to get it fixed.
Edit: it also launched the camera app from sleep. Maybe water got into the camera button for the first few hours but everything's fine now. Even the camera. Should i be concerned?
Take a dryer to it or put it in a bag of rice for a day with the flaps open.

thats how long it normally takes..
I have had the same issue with my phone, at first it was fully waterproof but then I sent it back because the ring around the power button fell off, after 15 days I got it back and they fixed all the problems I had BUT then I put it under water for 2 minuter, took it out and couple minutes later the phone started turning itself off and on the whole time. I opened the flaps and everything seemed to be alright, but then I took out the sim card and there was water on it!
The phone was still turning itself on and off so I used the red hard reset button and it shut off the phone for good.. I couldn't get it back to life..
I freaked out and put it on a bag of rice, 2 hours later the phone is still dead.
So then I grabbed a hairdryer, opened all the flaps and started blowing some hot air so it gets dry and it worked!
The next 2 days my camera got foggy like yours whenever I put it in my pocked, but after 2 days it disappeared and it has been working flawlessly ever since then, I dont wanna be without the phone for another 2-3 weeks so I'm not sending it back right now, the main thing is that I can still use it on the rain and while taking a shower, im just not submerging it anymore.
But yeah if you really want it to be fixed send it back, but if you can live without submerging it then I think you are gonna be just fine.

They clearly have official sony ads with people swimming and taking out pictures using the phone in a river/waterfall area. It is meant to stay under water for a half hour. so technically yes it is meant for swimming
Same here it went after a 4 days and on the left part of the screen it doesn't detect my finger i cannot take the icon on the left page and camera button not working headphone is not functioning properly only one side of the headphone workes. Very disappointed.

And in your manual it says clearly, only clear water, no sea water, no chlorine, no other liquids! Only plain clear water for up to 30 mins.
Find me a pool or sea with only clear water!?
Don't have a go at me about it, it's just as it's written in the manual and the warranty certificate!

It seems strange that SONY advertises the ability of taking pictures under water...probably in a "fresh water lake or pond"?
I was just "confirming" what was indicated from SONY's website...I wasn't taking a direct attack @ you.

Actually it's waterproof.. Sony on their site says it's waterproof.. IP58 means it's waterproof.. Even in the instructions manual.. They say you can use it in swimming pool because it's waterproof.. Of course you have to close all the ports

I took mine to the aquapark for 2 hours on my holidays. It got foggy because of the temperature. Everything was fine 1-2 days later.

Yeah, it's just condensation. Warmer temp inside the phone+cooler water temp=fogginess in the camera lens. Nothing to worry about, it'll go away soon enough.
Then maybe i should sue them for false advertising?

Better go for repair. My friends xperia z motherboard died this way. The water inside the device will never go out until someone opens it and clean it. He had the same problem(He buyed it 500€ and sold 70€), ridiciolous.

My suggestion though is the opening and closing the flaps causes wear and tear thus I bought the Sony dock so I wouldn't be opening them that often

It doesn't matter, the major danger for the phone can be the Salt water (Ocean), if you go on the beach and make same pictures under water, then after that you should wash the phone under sink.
A condensation on Lens for a waterproof device mean Faulty to me, as the condensation come from water that mean there is a water inside, also that condensation do not do good at all to the health of your phone a long way.
You can make picture every where you want, just be careful.

This has been floating around for a couple weeks now. It does very well in the test. Yes.
It has since come out that it is ipx3 certified. Which means it can take splashes.. etc. Although submerging it is more then a splash. All in all, its a good unadvertised feature. But I won't be testing it out myself.
Waterproof and water resistant are 2 completely different things.

I still don't understand how his camera overheating and running out of space on the SD card made the phone rotate under water.
Haha it didn't make the phone rotate underwater. It caused him to reposition his filming phone so it was filming from a different angle. The underwater phone never moved.

Amazing that the edge of the sink didn't move at all most of the times but the phone and surface of the water did (the edge of the sink moved 2 times, but in 4 of the phone moves it didn't). The phone in the water was definitely moved and the hand moving it was edited out. Changing the filming phone position wouldn't have caused ripples in the water.

The bottom of the sink is round, perhaps overtime the phone just settled to the lowest point? Makes sense to me...

All I can say is, either way, whether the phone was moved or not, it was obviously submerged in water for a decent period of time. It was at least a few minutes at a time. That's a pretty solid statement, although I'm still not brave enough to test it for myself.... I'm sure an iPhone or most other phones would be done after touching water. I had a Blackberry back in the day that fell into a shallow puddle for maybe two seconds. It never worked again.

I'd also like to see if the speakers survived that dunk. I know that many people who got their M7s wet found that everything but the speakers worked afterwards.
Mine surrvived having a little beer spill on it, although it did make me panic a little

I put mine HTC M8 into bowl with water completely for about a minute. Only thing I realized headphone icon showed up in notification bar. Also when I pulled out sd card was wet on edges . But SIM card was completely dry. Phone worked and played video under water about 2 inches down. After was taken out I just wiped it with paper towel and works perfectly..... DONT TRY IT! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR DEVICE.

So I'm HUNTING for a waterproof case for this phone with summer coming...and I can't find any name brand ones...otter box is taking FOREVER to release theirs! I know the phone is itself supposed to be waterproof, but the ear phone hole doesn't seem protected. Looking in there I see metal prongs for the ear plug connectors. Is there supposed to be a cover for it?
I believe the headphone port is self sealing, otherwise the phone wouldn't have the ip67 certification.

Audio is just metal touching metal, no need for it to be covered. It is however one reason you can't take this phone in salt water. Fresh water only. I take mine to the beach all the time, nice not to worry about getting splashed or rained on, but definitely want to rinse it with fresh water if it gets any salt water on it at all.

Remember IP67 certified as far as liquids go is 15cm to 1m (roughly 3ft) and is considered Water Resistant for short periods of time, in order to be Waterproof it must meet IP68 standards which is extended exposure to liquids.

i would caution against "Pool" water in any case as the chlorine content will damage the oleophobic coating on the glass (thisis the coating that helps resist fingerprints and smudges)
EW! So it's good for pond water only? LMAO! Otterbox needs to hurry up and come out with the darn waterproof case!\
So back on topic...there is a case called Griffin Defender series that claims to have waterproofing. I had a griffin on my old s3 and dropped in water plenty of times and it kept water out. Hope I could help. Check them out.

i just bought mine and i took it for a test in the pool and took pics and video and i opened to see if water got inside and yes some drops where inside but not in the important area so i dry it close it and it was good until later i try to see the pics and the screen went wild and then the horror screen went from white to black and that was it i try to dry it with hairdryer nothing i came back to live for a sec only to do the same then the rice trick nothing now is all black i can hear the phone respond but no image and im in despair since att told me warranty is void cuz the water indicator is red so im f up. Can someone help me out with some miraculous fix for this problem please i just bought it and im beyond broke. I got isopropyl alcohol if i dunk it without the battery of course will the acohol damage the amoled lcd or the camera or anything? if i dry it well will it come back to life or will the lcd digiticer permanetly dead ? HELP ME OUT HERE PLEASE :crying::crying:
Let's see. You knew you could not afford another phone. Yet, you wanted to test it by going swimming?
I don't know about the alcohol, but maybe the phone will come around once it's fully dry.
But regardless, I hope you learned your lesson here. Although these phones and some cases are supposed to be resistant, that doesn't mean we should be taking our phones in showers or going swimming with them around here. Every phone is not built the same, or how it should be, and someone's phone eventually was going to fail.

A)IP67 cert = Dust proof / Water Resistant in 3ft of water for up to 30min. I'm guessing you went deeper than 3ft. They advertise splashes and accidental sink/toilet drops. It's not an active phone or underwater camera and nobody said or advertised it as such.
I don't wish your phone to be dead. The best thing you can do is NOT power it on and let it sit in rice for 48hrs. Don't be impatient, let it sit. You've continued to power it on shortly after the immersion so I would manage your expectations, It may be done.

So, I just got this s5 and decided to take the water resistancs to a new level.
I first ended up going to Cedar Point Amusement park, and went to the water park with it. Took a few video's with it on the slides, etc. Then went to the Wavepool , kept in my pock so it was no more then a few feet under water at any time.
Worked great, phone was still working. Just an FYI, if you do use it underwater, your signal strength will die, no cell signal underwater guys, I first thought the phone fried, but then relized, that was the issue, and then in a min, 4G was back! (I was freaked when I realized my pebble told me I was not connected.) Played with my Sphero for a bit.
a week later, I was at a festival doing some shooting, I was invited to the pool, with all the drugged up artists ,.. They all thought I was on every drug known to man because I brought my phone in the pool to take pictures (a few under water ones too!)
So far so good. I will admit that the phone at no time was fully submerged for more then 5 or 10 min at a time. but the phone still works great, and just needs a rince and dry to get the touch screen to work nomaly again.
so far, I'm not afraid!. I got the Samsung wireless back, I know it's got the seal, so that one is next! this week!

To me it's a "just in case feature" lol... "just in case I..."

my theory, is if I am going to actualy do long swimming with it, I will put it my waterproof bag, but jumping into the pool for a quick jaunt, playing with my Sphero, or a waterslide where my phone is not UNDER water for more then a few min at a time, I will risk it.
I never keep phones long enough anyways.

Chlorine will destroy your waterproof capabilities.
Also your speaker will get saturated and sound like crap - eventually the phone will have a weak speaker resulting in popping/crackling sounds. Just FYI...You can take pictures and the phone can get wet but if your doing it everyday of summer, bad things could happen. I think the Active can do it better than the reg S 5, but I wont go swimming with it. Maybe take pictures once in a while in the pool.
? Makes No sense to me but hey i dont have a silver spoon in my mouth. Even if i could i woulnt cause its a waist of good hardware. Maybe everyone should be poor once in thier life and would appreciate things more.

I highly doubt the chlorine content in a public pool is high enough to cause the waterproof seals on the S5 to deteriorate.

It's probably not high enough to break the seal, yes, but your headphone jacks are being exposed to chlorine, as are your speakers. Filtered water at home wouldn't corrode the equipment as fast since... well that's chlorine's job, you're not drinking chlorinated water at home. But yeah, the speakers and headphone jack aren't directly part of the board if I'm correct, instead they are attatched to it (I suck at explaining things, bear with me please) by the looks of it, probably explaining why you can buy the headphone jack and speakers separately as replacement parts instead if the whole board. The reason why the slip is on the charging port is to protect the board, which is in more cases a lot more important than sound equipment. I hope I explained that generally well for no sleep in 36 hours. :laugh:

Chlorine, maybe not. Extra pressure against the seals, almost assuredly.

Some people have insurance policies, some people have more money and are willing to play with it. Some people are spoiled and didn't pay for their phone and can just ask for another one when it breaks. Whatever the reason, thank you.

and some people take the risk and deal with the consequences. I have taken the phone in the pool, and when I am done, I do clean it off, do I plan on doing it on a regular basis, NO, I only did it because I was thinking, I had 30 days to return this phone if it explodes, so I took the risk, in general, If I ever do plan on going to the pool in the future, I have a waterproof bag that I use.
Now the shower, man, is nice to change the song and see whats playing. but I don't submerge it.
Long story short, I was asking for outcomes, I was not asking if anyone was a spoiled brat, had more money then god, did't care if the phone exploded or whatever, those are just troll answers, I was looking for experiences of people willing to take risks, what their device's outcome was, not their financial outcome.
and about chlorine and the seals, that is a legit concern, just like salt in salt water pools. I did not think of that, and this is why i asked.
Water + electricity = busted ****. Common sense. And when the first battery does explode (not 100% on if the battery will do this) from taking into elements they have no business being in I'm sure someone will jump on some lawsuit even though it was there fault cause we all know water and electricity go so well together.

What? The phone is built to withstand a certain degree of water, hence the iP67 rating, I don't underatand why you are jumping to these astronomically implausible conclusions.
I don't know if you have seen the videos on YouTube but the S5 is highly resistant to water, even more so than the IP67 rating would lead you to believe.
Batteries can explode from various things, sitting too long can cause them to puff up, a direct impact/force can also cause it to explode.
Water+Electricity is bad but telling people their battery will explode if their S5 encounters water is simply doing a disservice to them. There are limits to the S5's water resistance as there are limits to many other things in life, we respect those limits and stay within the designated "safe" boundaries. There is no difference with the S5, respect the limits of the water resistance and continue enjoying the feature.

The battery exploding is more or less hypothetical as I said I wasn't a 100% and furthermore like I said water and electricity don't mix. One little flaw in you precious waterproof seals and poof your phones done. I myself have noticed just from charging my phone the USB flap is already loose so no I would not trust submerging my phone in water at any depth. and as for the waterproof rating i would think that applies to things like getting caught in the rain on your phone or dropping it in the toilet and ouickly removing it. Not jumping in a pool or going scuba diving and taking pictures underwater. Purposely Taking your phone into water or any other liquid is just STUPID it's water resistant not watertight or waterproof. Do with your phone what you will I just hate seeing hardware abused even if it is not mine. Sorry if this upsets anyone just my opinion.

The IP67 rating means Ingress Protection, the S5 in this case is 100% Dust proof as it has the highest value on the scale for dust resistance. The 2nd number in which the S5 has a 7 means water resistant at depths of up to 1m for up to 30 minutes, there is only one level above the S5's rating. This rating is given based on standardized testing so assuming you follow the specified limits and make sure your port covers are sealed, you should be fine taking your device with you in up to 1m of water.
Regarding the loosening of the port cover, that is a major point of concern. My port cover is still very tight fitting but I am have been extremely cautious in making sure it stays at 90° from the opening and doesn't bend in any other direction as to not weaken the flap.

Yea the flap is what has me believing it shouldn't be submerged. Say your sitting poolside and drop ur phone in, Yea it's good to have the iP67 rating but just from removing the USB flap to charge i would throw that rating out the window. It's loose
