I have managed to netflix to display US content on my phone, however whenever I try to play a video the chromecast hangs or errors out, it is ok with playing with content available in the uk.
is there any workaround I could use to get it to play the US content?

The Chromecast has Google's DNS servers hardcoded into it, so whatever DNS addresses you are using from unblock-us or similar are ignored.
Only solution to this is to have it connected to a router that can redirect DNS calls. Usually means a router running custom firmware such as DD-WRT. Also believe the Ubiquiti EdgeRouters can do it.

Yeah I have a virgin media super hub, so I can't edit the DNS, would it be ok for it to go through 1 router first then the super hub? with the first one being the dns redirector?
Not being sure what the virgin hub does, but I guess it is some sort of combined ADSL/cable modem/router? Most of these can be put into "gateway mode" i.e. turning off the routing functions and essentially becoming just a modem so you can connect another router. Check with Virgin if they will do it for you.
Two cascaded routers is probably not a great idea.

I'm not able to connect to wifi at all with my One, even when I have excellent wifi strength. I thought I had a defective unit but I got another one and it still doesn't connect. I have no trouble connecting at all with my iPhone 4s, Nexus 7, or Samsung Galaxy S1. (When I run speed test with these I get about 7-10 Mbps download and about 10-15 Mbps upload) Is there anything I can do to fix this? (like an update or something) This is my last resort before I bring it back and use my old phone.
Have you changed your WiFi password recently?

Ok I fixed it. To anyone having problems with wifi, on your wifi settings click "show advanced options," change ip settings to static, and change the DNS 2 to 8.8.4.4

If I am not mistaken that 8.8.4.4 is a google DNS. Meaning you bypassed your providers DNS and are now using this one. This would indicate that there is a DNS conflict between you and your provider....and you basically went around the problem. Hey if it works it is all good I guess and of course I may be way of course in the response. If so then please feel free to refer to me as a dum dum
Edit: Let me re-phrase this a bit because it does not actually indicate a conflict. Apparently your wifi router is set to this google 8.8.4.4 DNS and not the DNS that your provider is using. Thus any device going through the wifi router must match this DNS setting to connect.
Many people on lets say XBOX do this to maybe help with lag and stuff especially if the google DNS server is closer to them than there Providers DNS server.. It is really no big deal in the grand scheme of things but it is not a universal fix as so stated in your reply. Hope this makes sense.
I'm having issues connecting to the 5mhz WiFi network while the 2.4 works perfectly fine on same router. Same thing at work... Laptops connect fine. Tried both stock and viper Rom and still nothing... It just doesn't even connect to the network... The pass was entered correctly.

No issues on 5GHz with my Linksys E3000's with dd-wrt firmware. Are you on the latest firmware from the manufacturer of your device?
Using ddwrt myself.. it's really weird cause even at work with their fancy routers.. it doesn't work nor at home... Maybe just defective antenna or something ? The 2.4 works fine.

I'm living in Panama City, so I'm natively in the Mexico Netflix region. On my apple TV I'm using unblock-us to change regions. Obviously for chromecast I've removed all DNS settings from my S3, TF700 and MBP. I can watch Netflix fine on all three devices. On Chromecast I only get a few minutes, maybe 5, before I get "We're having trouble playing this title right now. Please try again later or select a different title."
This happens with all my devices. Netflix plays fine on those devices.
Google Play Movies plays perfect, Youtube has no problems.
Looking at internet traffic as the message appears, I dont see a drop in traffic at all. However in recent weeks, watching Hulu on our apple tv can sometimes take 20 minutes longer thanks to lots of pauses.
I purchased this so I didnt have to keep moving my ATV up and down stairs. I like that it's cheap, I like using a phone or chrome to control it - but I wonder if Google ever plan to add manual IP settings. How much will they add to it in the future?
I'm very tech savy, have been in IT for 13 years. The cable modem and router I have are completely foreign to me, I dont know the username and password to login and even look at the firmware. All I know is it's a motorola something. But I did miss the window for rooting it and I was thinking if I could roll the firmware back to allow rooting, but I doubt it.
Anyone have any suggesting?
If Netflix is working on other devices I would suspect your Chromecast is not getting a good/stable WiFi signal.
Use the HDMI extender, try a different (side/front) HDMI port if your TV has one and make sure it has line-of-sight to your router with as few obstructions as possible.

Sadly this doesnt work either Why would the unstable wifi signal be problem with Netflix and not Google Play? Better connection to Google's own servers?

Differences in encoding rate can make one service work while another has problems, so really depends.

Nope, I'm yet to finish a program without interruption, I keep switching to my ATV after the 4-5 attempt.
My wife is a apple faithful, I cant show her my new google toy and have it not work 100%. Netflix works fine most of the time on the ATV, maybe a few times the video freezes and the audio keeps playing. I think maybe the ATV handles the little dropouts better, Hulu will pause for 10-15 seconds and keep playing.
Speedtest only records 4.5-5Mb
I think I know what your problem is since I've encountered it myself.
You're using a different dns configuration to watch Netflix from a different region, let's take the USA as an example. When you configure the unblock-us setting into your router or your mobile devices they'll work and play the USA Netflix content just fine. But these settings will never work for the chromecast since it will always use google's dns which is 8.8.8.8. Or 8.8.4.4 since this is baked into the chromecast and cannot be changed.
Once you start streaming us based Netflix content to your chromecast... It's going to see that that content is not available in your region and it'll time out and show you the message you've mentioned.
The only way around this is to root your chromecast which is now impossible if you haven't already done so, or you have to have a dd-wrt supported router. So you can reroute the google dns to the unblock-us dns.

You can also try adding a static route to an unresponsive local address
Or if your router supports blocking access to specific IPs, you can block 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
Depending on your router one or both may work.
If Chromecast times out in trying to reach Google DNS, it will fall back to the DHCP-supplied DNS.
It has to try and fail timeout, rather than get immediately refused though. Immediate refusal will make it nag about not being able to reach the Internet.

Why would you need to hide it from your wife?
If your Chromecast is unrooted, the *only* ways to view out of region content are by modification of the router. If necessary you could add a second more customizable router on top of the cable company's equipment, and use that network for all your casting needs.

Living in Panama City, same problems as OP, the difference is that it used to work when I first got it. I'm on build 16664 with no VPN or anything else to change regions. Netflix works fine on PS3, nexus 5, nexus 7, windows PC, Ouya, 3DS and Macbook. I've tried reseting the CC (holding button, and through the android app) and reinstalling the Netflix apps on my android devices (even though I knew that wasn't the problem since I can't cast from my PC either). Any ideas on router configuration we could try?
Hi,
I can't cast the BBC iplayer tab from my chrome browser (OS X Mavericks) through PureVPN or any other VPN (as I live in Spain) since the iplayer got updated and incorporated the cast button.
Before the update when I had the choice to carry on using the old version of the iplayer, it worked fine but now after the update all I get on my TV is a message saying "Ready to cast" and nothing happens.
Will it be because the player can detect that my Chromecast is actually connected in Spain?
Is anyone having the same problem?
Any ideas/solution would be greatly appreciated.

It's because iPlayer is trying to send Chromecast a link to pull the video directly, but Chromecast itself isn't on the VPN and still appears to be in Spain.

You can buy a VPN account and setup on your Wifi Router , and give VPN access to all devices, im doing that long time ago , to see Netflix USA and Pandora .

Currently you can't really run a VPN client on Chromecast (in theory if you're rooted it's possible but I don't think anyone's tried), so your best option is to set up VPN on the WiFi AP/router that Chromecast connects to so its traffic goes through the VPN. You might also have to block/reroute the Google DNS servers to force Chromecast to use the VPN DNS, but I'm not 100% sure on this.
If the router connects to a VPN rather than use DNS redirection, I would think that covers it because Google DNS would be accessed through the tunnel.

As other have implied, and said, you need to get your routing device to connect to your VPN service. Then your devices should get the VPN dns and IP information pushed to them.
I have done this with using the BBC iPlayer on both my Note 2 and ASUS Infinity Pad Tablet and Chromecast. Used my GN2 WiFi hotspot service while it was connected to my VPN service. I connected both the tablet and chromecast to it. Then I was able to cast videos to the chromecast from the tablet.
You just need to figure how to connect your router to your VPN service, if possible. Not all VPN services allow this.
I used to use the netflix on daily basis until about three weeks ago I started to get the following message after a long time displaying the netflix splash screen on my TV: "Humm... It seems we're unable to connect". And then the netflix closes after 10 seconds. Every other chromecast official app works good, but Netflix. I also noted that if I restore the chromecast and launch netflix, everything will work. But if I cast other app, as YouTube for instance, and then return to netflix, I'll get the problem again, requiring another restore.
My chromecast software version is 16664.
Is anyone experiencing the something like that?

Just to confirm, you're not using any DNS relocation/redirection (Unlocator, Unotelly, etc), right?
I just used Netflix the other day, and I'm still on 16664.
It's weird that everything else works except for Netflix, and also weird that factory reset makes it work. Could be a bug or perhaps something with WiFi connectivity. You don't have a WiFi repeater or multiple APs using the same SSID do you?

I use regular DNS. I also tried different WiFi routers and I always got this issue. Rarely Netflix works without need factory reset.
I was wondering if it could be a problem with the chromecast cache. Do you know a way to clear the cache without factory reseting?

Not that I know of... however, since the Netflix app is stored on Chromecast, there's a small possibility that it's a RAM or NAND issue on your Chromecast itself. If it's not rooted or special in any way, you might want to consider getting it replaced.
Or see if you can borrow another Chromecast to see if the problem is localized to your specific device.

This is new for me. I thought Netflix was loaded online. I'll ask a friend that has chromecast to test mine in his home and and borrow his chromecast.

I borrowed a chromecast and first time it worked. After casting YouTube videos and then return to netflix, same thing happened. My friend got everything working great using my chromecast.
The only thing that never changed is my cable modem, but I never change anything on it. Moreover, why this is happening only with netflix and why it works if I factory reset are still a mystery.

Perhaps you are seeing the first case of Net Neutrality biting you in the ISP?
See if you can reach Netflix via the browser...
I don't think so. I can access netflix anywhere else: tablet, phone, ps3 and computer. Besides, my friend use the same isp.
The only other place I having trouble in access netflix is my old Asus cube that I had retired since I got the chromecast last year.

Quite the puzzle...
Since your Chromecast works on your friend's network, and your friend's Chromecast shows the same behavior as yours on your network, the breakage factor definitely seems to be something about your network.
I really can't think of your cable modem being an issue unless isn't going bad (if it has an interface, look for excessive errors and/or poor signal quality - for example, Motorola SurfBoards usually have an interface at http://192.168.100.1/).
As your friend is using the same ISP, I would compare your router settings with his - ISP login type, routing and DNS in particular.
Of course if you have different routers then the router itself is still a variable.
I'll try to share my mobile Internet connection as soon I get back home to see if it will do the same.
Also I'll try to look the router log to see something.

I tested chromecast connecting to my phone in tethering mode. Netflix worked everytime. But when I got back to my regular connection, the problem appeared again.
So the problem seems to be located in my cable modem that also is a router.

Ok first question...do you have another router connected to the Modem Router? Are you using the Modem's built in WiFi or this other router's?
If you have another router then chances are likely you have a double NAT situation which is messing you up.
Check your other router and see what IP address is has listed under Internet connection...If it is a 192.168.xxx.xxx then it's a double Nat and you need to call your Cable company and have them put the Modem into Bridge mode.
If you do not have another router and use only the Modem router then you need to call the cable company and have them change the settings on the router to allow multicast and UPnP...Maybe a few other settings as well. Tell them what you are trying to do they have probably gotten lots of calls from others with the same issue.
Me personally I prefer to use my own router and have them put the Modem into Bridge mode so I have full control over the network and don't need to call them whenever I have a problem or want to change settings.

My cable modem a public IP provided by my ISP, and a private IP that is 192.168.0.1. My router has a WAN IP provided by my cable modem (192.168.0.xxx) and a LAN IP 192.168.1.1. My chromecast used to be connected in my router LAN, but I changed it to connect directly to the cable modem router. I'll try to put the cable modem in bridge mode to see what happens as I have full access to its configuration.

Yep that setup causes a double Nat situation Which doesn't work well for most networking applications....
Especially since you are also dealing with Two different Wireless networks.
Best setup is to have the modem just be a modem and send public IPs to whatever connects to it.
Then you won't have any Nat translation issues PLUS you get the ability (if your Modem has multiple ports like most Modem/Router Hybrids do, You can get a public IP for any device directly connected to the Modem which is good for running servers and for testing router issues.
Problem solved!
I turned off the wifi on the cable modem and put it on bridge mode, letting my router deal with my network. Netflix is now working good on both chromecast and Google tv.
However I believe the problem was related to a still unknown setting in the cable modem as I left it operating alone and netflix was still not able to load.

it may very well have been a Router issue with the Modem...But now that it is only a Bridge the other router's settings will handle all the communication needed for the CCast and it should work...
As long as the settings on the second router were not the issue in the first place.

I only noticed it recently, when I have VPN session running on my mobile, I lose the access to my home network and can't see Chromecast. It only started when I upgraded my HTC One to KitKat, it was not an issue before. Is there a setting or something obvious that I am missing here? I am running OpenVPN app, but also tried the commercial one HMA with the same problem.
Hope someone can help.

Usually VPN clients have the option to not route certain traffic through the VPN. Configuring to not route Chromecast through the VPN should leave Chromecast visible unless there's also some multicast discovery being filtered out by the VPN as well.
I had to go through a very advanced setup on my firewall to get the cc to cast on my same network but use the VPN at the same time..
Hint: ISP redundancy.

The way I did it was have two routers - one with a Roku and the other a Chromecast. The Router with the Chromecast has a US DNS and the other stays as a Canadian address. Works well. Though I do occasionally forget how it is set up. But between them I can work around most Geo Issues.

So please any advice how to configure VPN client on android device and/or router (I have dlink dir-635)?
I have to connect on device with my company VPN and possibilty casting to my TV would be vey very usefull.

try using VPNROOT.
