Dev Edition Worth Waiting? - Moto X Q&A

Struggling with getting the Dev edition and just getting the Verizon version when motomaker hits Verizon. There's the obvious plus with getting the Dev edition but I'm not crazy about the color scheme. Thoughts?

I am so glad I went with importing a Rodgers one and not going with a moto maker one. I have unlocked and rooted and xposedmoto has meant I can get rid of the WiFi gap, network icon etc.

What part of the ATT bands does the Roger device support?

As far as I know they are one and the same device just with an unlockable boot loader

Could you post a screenshot of the fixed WiFi gap?
Where did you import from? EBay?

I imported from a friend of a friend.. But they are on eBay yeah. Factor in VAT if you importing as I got hit with £95 bill

If you can live with 16GB of storage, just import the Rogers version (for the unlockable bootloader).

I hope so!

I'm really getting tired of waiting... I saw Sprint and US Cellular have been added to the list of unlock codes posted by Motorola, no word on Verizon that I've heard. I did hear Dev Editions are about 2 weeks out, but I haven't seen that confirmed. I don't really care about picking my own color, it'd be nice but... I don't mind the color scheme of the Dev Edition or just getting friggin' a black one. I just would like Verizon to say when Dev Editions will be available or Motorola or Verizon to say if the codes will be coming out ever. I really want to get one the beginning of this week but don't know which way to go myself...

Oops - I somehow missed that you're on Verizon. Both AT&T and Verizon have made their stance on unlocked bootloaders pretty clear.

Yeah that is true. I don't quite understand the difference of offering me a code or selling me a dev edition but I rarely understand them. If anything they'd have a bit of proof of me voiding my warranty. I'll keep my cracked G nexus for a bit longer I suppose, see what time tells.

The Dev edition wont be available direct from at and t or verison. It is just able to be used on the network if bought from moto/best buy etc

Really... Any word on when bestbuy will sell or if you're still able to use an upgrade / subsidized price with them? I guess either way that tips the scale in my scenario though. Ordering by 3PM will get it in my hands Wednesday, probably doing that.

Yeah. I know if I get the Dev edition I'd have to go through moto which I rather do cause I rather moto profit from my $600 something than VZW. But I think I'm more leaning towards moto maker when it hits VZW and the only reason I'm okay with this is because I think I could live with the moto x without being a crack flasher.

Looks like Dev edition only available in black or white oof contract from moto. T-Mobile is now and only available direct also
Sent from my XT1058 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I'm holding out on getting the developer edition although I'm getting a little impatient since not much has been announced. I've been spoiled by my G-nex's unlockable bootloader

I own the black moto x on verizon and im in love with the phone. Ill most likely sell this phone on swappa and pay a few extra bucks and get the DEV edition when its out. I feel like a solid black or white phone would be easier to resell.

Are you waiting for the Google edition/Developer edition?

Also, wth would the difference be at this point if they would both retain moto x features lol. I believe that is what I'm doing especially at&t and they're bootloader locking stuff. Just not sure which version and which one comes out first.

i might be waiting. I'll be considering the phone but am going to have to pay full price off contract. So if I'm going to do that, I might as well get the developer edition. However, I would really like to order the phone on opening day, so I'm hoping the Developer edition comes out same day.

I hear you, same with me. I'd have to buy off contract either way and dont feel at&t needs more of my money. But you say developer edition which would most likely be on the Motorola website? What about the Google edition version that is rumored to come out? Aren't these the same companies, why make it so confusing lol.
It would be nice to have some idea of how long we have to wait......
I defently waiting. Want my unlocked bootloader...I dont want to wait to see if someone can unlock the regular bootloader. I am on Verizon...so I also need to pay full price to keep my unlimited data

Price is what will decide it for me.
I am considering the purchase of a Developer Edition phone only because of the price of it. I am thinking it would be cheaper to purchase it from Google than it would be to buy it off contract from the carrier. But if it is the same price then I will just get it from my carrier. The colour designing of it isnt important to me.
News should come out in a few days about dev edition availability. I'm not getting the at&t one I don't think. I'm already hearing all the complaints about their annoying phone book software, and their locked BL.

The address book software doesn't get in the way. Usually it pops up on phones like the One, but on the X, I haven't seen it yet.

I'm definitely waiting for a developer unlocked edition. Don't want carrier bloat and waiting for bootloader unlock and random issues.
I'll likely return mine that I bought at AT&T when a dev edition is out or news of one. I forget how much I HATE the carrier having more control over my device than me.

Yeah...if not I'm just gonna go with the Motomaker version and unlock the bootloader another way which probably has been done already.
So what's the chance of Verizon getting an unlocked developers edition?
What was the last phone Verizon allowed unlocked out of the box on their network?
compatibility with theoretical future unlocked stock?
Question: Let's say in the future some brilliant dev-type finds a root & bootloader unlock exploit for the non-dev edition of the VZW Moto X. Would ROMs developed for that phone (the rooted/unlocked VZW stock Moto X) be compatible with the Dev Edition? Does anyone know how this has worked with previous Dev Editions?
I'm just wondering in the situation described above, whether the people who shelled out for Dev Edition early on could find themselves with a much smaller mod/dev community to draw upon than people who wait around for a potential (but maybe never coming) future unlock of the device. Would the two VZW versions of the Moto X (Dev and stock) be essentially the same device aside from bootloader, and therefore have compatibility?
I know this is all conjecture until we see an actual Dev Edition on VZW (which might not happen) but I'd be interested in thoughts.
Roms would work on both developer and regular version. One plus would be 32 GB . im hoping Verizon will get developer with the extra storage.

Well with current rumors pegging it at around $500+, I sense this phone failing commercially.
It's just too much money.
I get Moto wants this to be their "iPhone" but if you wanted to massively pull the rug out from under their feet, you would stick this thing's non contract price around the rumors for the 5C price, which is $300-$400.

Er, I heard the Rogers version doesn't support AWS, is that true? The whole point of the Dev Edition to me is the lack of branding and pentaband 3G/HSPA as I will be on Wind Mobile (no LTE available). So I kinda of DO need the Dev Edition.

The Rogers version does support AWS with LTE, but not HSPA(which is what you want for Wind) You need the dev edition or tmobile/retail edition if you want to use it with Wind.

Hi! Sorry for digging up an old thread but I'd like to know If you ended up purchasing the developer edition and if it truly is compatible with Wind Mobile. I'm currently in the same situation you were and I can't believe how much confusion there is over the different variants of Moto X available. All the data I've seen suggests the T-mobile and GSM Developer Edition are essentially the same phones with the same pentaband support but every social board I've come across has someone claiming they are not. I trusted my research however and recently jumped on an opportunity to purchase a brand new unopened Developer Edition Moto X for a great deal off ebay only to come across yet another contradicting post but this time on a Canadian board with respect to Wind specifically and now I'm very worried. Can you please confirm the Moto X GSM Developer Edition's compatibility with Wind Mobile?
Thanks
Also, FYI the model number on the box reads 00337NADEV which is what's listed on Motorola's specs sheet for AT&T/T-mobile's GSM Developer Edition while the FCC ID is IHDT56PA2 which corresponds to the XT1053 variant so hopefully everything works out (fingers crossed)

Yes I did, and yes it is! I've had it (XT1053 GSM Dev Edition) for 7 months now, and I use Wind data daily. It works very well. I can even get data at certain spots in the subway (near entrances and at above-ground stations).

I know what you mean. I was in the same situation 7 months ago and I probably even read that same board. I bet that whoever said data didn't work forgot to configure the APN settings. I was without data for almost the entire first day with my X until I realized I had to input the APN settings myself.
I can't confirm or deny the numbers on the box (I lost the box), but it sounds like you did your research well. Unless the eBay seller was deliberately lying to you, you should be good. Congrats on your purchase and don't forget to get a nano SIM! (I got mine for $10 from a Wind retailer.)
Sorry, can't help. Ended up buying Nexus 5. I wish I was in Wind's service area but am not so never looked into that.

That's great news! Thanks I'll be sure to check the APN settings also. Hopefully this thread clears up the situation for anyone else. I've been eyeing this device for a long time very excited to finally have one. How are the data speeds on Wind? I read they just recently finished upgrading all their towers to the HSPA+ standard and are now working on rolling out dual carrier HSPA+ also . Will be interesting to see how it fairs against Rogers 3G network once I get the phone and how well the Moto X's antenna can pick up Wind's signals

Bummer. The nexus 5 seems like a great device though was seriously considering it but touchless control and active display features of the moto x won me over.
Don't expect LTE speeds obviously, but they are fast enough for everything I do and I never worry about speeds. That includes streaming YouTube and music on my commute.
Anyway, i just did 5 speed tests standing in the same spot. The server was a bigger factor than the network I found. From top to bottom: Start, Teksavvy, Vmedia, Zero fail, Zero fail. All servers were listed as 14km away in "Toronto". I'm pretty sure this app is just computing the distance to downtown and not the actual server...

I believe you can pick up the non-Moto Maker one at a corporate store (if they're anything like Verizon), but if you want Moto Maker, you have to get it shipped to you. The non-Moto Maker only comes in either Black front, Black weave back or White front, White weave back. If you want any of the customization you have to get it shipped to you.

they aren't carrying them in store.
i don tthink t-mobile really is "selling" this phone per se. like they sell the nexus 5 in store. but this phone is more like. well you can get sim cards at t-mobile and it will support the bands and thats it.
as far as t-mobile corporate cares this phone is probaby the same as you buying a european or asian market GSM phone.
when i go into "my tmobile" it cant even detect what phone it is, as they dont even have the IMEI list just like any foreign phone.

How do I get it unlocked? There are people on local craigslist selling their AT&T phones for around 380. Can I buy that and use an unlock service? Has any one tried one before?
As far as the carrier logo goes, I plan to use a skin anyway. The only thing I would be sacrificing would be the locked BL.
TIA

Indian here. Planning on getting a 32GB Moto X. Need to know if it'll work in India.

Hi. I'm based in Bangalore, India. I plan to get a 32GB Moto X with a Bamboo back from a friend in the States. I have a few questions about it, if anybody would be kind to help that'd be awesome.
1) Is there an unlocked version of the device and will it work in India?
2) How much would the device cost me including tax? I know tax laws are different according to state but I'd like to know the price range it would fall in.
3) More general questions about the phone: Is it of a durable build quality? How's the camera? I've read a ton of reviews but I want to know some real life comments. Also, I don't want to accidentally crack my screen from the smallest drop and get into the trouble of having to send the phone overseas back to the USA for customer support.

Sorry for hijacking this thread. I thought it better to post in this one than start a new one since my query is similar.
My question is which edition of Moto X is being sold in India? It is definitely an unlocked gsm phone as far as I know.
I would be moving to California for a little while and was wondering if I could use my Indian Moto X there on a prepaid gsm network like T-Mobile.
Any help would be appreciated.
Can't post the link to the Indian Moto x here due to new member restrictions. But it's being sold exclusively on flipkart.com

[Q] will vzw nexus 6 have locked bootloader?

With big red's habit of keeping their users from actually customizing their devices, would it be safe to assume that they are going to lock the bootloader on the nexus 6 just like they did with my gorgeous - but bone stock - GS5? (SM-G900V)

To be honest, I am scared of Verizons evil deeds, but I can see Google putting up a fight for too much carrier customization. At worst, maybe sim locked and a Verizon logo. Same thing as ATT did, but that's why u get the unlocked version from the Play store, Motorola, Sprint, or T-Mobile.

VZW doesn't SIM lock devices anymore.
They will, however, encrypt bootloaders.
Not a snowball's chance in hell that the bootloader will be locked.

It's hopeless
Mark MY words and come back to it and if I'm wrong I will donate to charity. The Nexus 6 will NOT be coming to Verizon. They will release a very very similar phone all marked up with Verizon labels with some type of "Droid" branding called the super duper turbo that will indeed have a locked bootloader and all sorts of bloat ware crap strung throughout the Motorola skinned app drawer... sorry I'm just a bitter Verizon customer stuck in a harsh reality!
If you can afford it, buy from google or Motorola. Slap in a nano Sim card from Verizon. It works. Got my nexus Thursday and swapped the Sim out of my moto x. Been using it since. Sold my moto x along with my note 3. Downloaded youmail and unsubscribed from Verizon visual voicemail.
I don't see why it would be locked. The Galaxy Nexus wasn't. I'm so glad my Galaxy Nexus SIM card works on the nsix. Lol with a serious trimming down...

I got my N6 directly from Moto and popped in my VZW sim without a hitch.
I'll say this... I used my OnePlus on TMobile for 6 months and their network is TRASH in comparison. This was after a summer of traveling around the U.S., traveling for work, and a few driving getaways. If TMo works in your neighborhood and you never leave it, then more power to you. If not, I'm here to tell you, VZW may be a-holes when it comes to devices but their network is no joke. Don't suffer from "the grass-is-greener" syndrome.
