Picked up a "non-working" HD 7". Thought it may be a file sytem issue, but I think it has a hardware issue. The screen will light but does not display any image on the LCD. I was able to get into bootloader mode and reflashed but have the same issue. I finally plugged into HDMI and found it working. Touch screen works, just no image on LCD? Searched forums but haven't found anyone with similar issue. I've reseated the cables for the screen. Worst case it will stay connected to TV....

My phone LCD backlight went out but other than that worked fine. After installing a new screen the phone will not boot past the moto logo.
I can get into recovery and charge only but if I try to boot normally it goes blank after the moto logo not even showing the boot animation.
Reinstalling old LCD allows it to boot but with no backlight is unusable.
Anyone have any ideas?

Assuming you are 100% sure you've hooked everything up correctly, it sounds to me like a faulty/incorrect screen. I've read about this happening to other people (Bionics, though), luckily (so far) I've never had any issue with any screen replacements.
I'll check the connections again. The replacement screen came from a damaged Droid 4 that would not even show the moto logo.
I was lazy and rather than open it all the way and replace only the screen I swopped the whole upper part of the phone slide. I'll try doing it the right way.
Edit: checked all connections and tried again. Still no go.
Where is my torx 3 bit!
Edit 2: tried again. Still works with old screen switching only the screen (and the things that CAN NOT be separated from it) still won't boot. looks like I need a new screen.
Did you buy a broken D4 and try to swap the screen? If so, that unfortunately might be why it was broken in the first place... The plus is that might then be an easy fix too... Then you'd have two!

I did get a broken D4. It had a bad board and would not even show the moto logo.
What's really strange is yesterday it was still not working and today it booted fine but now the touch screen is not working.
I'll keep trying to fix it.
Honestly it sounds to me like the front portion is busted. Perhaps it is just the digitizer that is broken, those tend to be much cheaper than LCDs...
Good luck and let us know how it pans out, it is always good to hear solutions to hardware problems!
Both touch screens/digitizers work with the lcd that has a bad backlight but not the one with the good backlight.
I examined the LCD with the good backlight and found a very small tear in the ribbon. Looks like I found the problem.
Guys I just bought a used Kindle Fire HD 7" (not sure it it's the current version or the original KF HD as it has 32GB of storage space on it) that has some major issues.
It alternates between either not showing anything on the screen with the only indications that it is turned on being that it makes a noise when I disconnect it from the computer I have it connected to, and the kindle fire hard drive disappears, and intermittantly it displays a little over half of the screen, with a distinct grey overcast, with a 1 inch or so band of solid grey and the remainder of the screen displaying as black.
When I rotate the screen the messed up portion doesn't rotate with the screen. And putting it into fastboot mode with a factory cable shows the same behavior with the screen either not displaying at all or only displaying half of the fastboot screen.
Is this a screen issue or a defective motherboard?
I would like to fix it and use it but want to make sure I get the right parts before I try.

Well you can try a full factory restore but you may be looking at a hardware issue.

I did use fastboot to recover it back to factory but it didn't fix the issue unfortunately.
I bought a new screen and digitizer assembly (basically the whole front of the kindle fire HD minus only the plastic that is attached to it with glue), that once I get in I will replace the screen on my messed up one.
the replacement screen fixed the issue, sorry I hadn't responded to update the thread.
Hello everyone,
I have got one problem... I broke digitizer of my HTC Desire 500. So I order new one and to be sure, also LCD screen. I replaced, and...
After turning on, everything works fine. Digitizer works properly, screen shows normal picture. But after few minutes - restarts (I don't remember well) backlight of my screen goes down and now it have no backlight at all. I rebooted phone many times, I remounted screen and digitizer to be sure that connections are fine - but no results. I restored factory settings of phone with no effect too. :/
Please help, what happend? What could be the source of problem? I don't want to order new sceen if it could beak too ;/ I read other threats about coil problem in other HTC, but I cannot find any coil in my Desire's motherboard (maybe it is hidden under plate that covers CPU and other parts). I performed tests of light sensor and it works fine. Buttons lights fine too. The problem refers only to LCD screen, and backlight doesn't respond during test.
Anyone help?
same situation
Hello kowal_luki,
I'm just in the same bad situation.
After a bad fall of the phone the screen broke so I ordered a new one for replacing it.
Opening the phone I noticed that also the LCD (and not only the external screen) was broke so had to order also the LCD.
As precaution tried to power-on my device without a complete assembly and everything seemed to be fine, so I decided to glue the LCD to the outer screen (the touch screen) with a LOCA TP-2500 glue.
Then I re-assembled it up: at first the image was a little bit disturbed but the back-light was working; after few second the back-light turned off. I checked the cable, after that the image went perfect but the back-light still dead.
Did you find a solution for this -still not explanable- problem?
I just picked up a Nook HD+ for 5$ because of a touch screen problem, looks like it only work on corner and borders without working on middle screen, this make my device totally unusable, I've tried to install stock ROM and CM but it does not help at all.
When I disassemble I found that the digitizer ribbon cable were loose but after I clean and plugged it back then it still doesn't improve at all.
The touch screen have no screen protector, I've cleaned the whole screen with rubbing alcohol and there is no obvious sign of damage or cracked glass.
Did anyone having this problem before? I heard people said that there is a calibration app out there but I haven't tried it yet because I can't do anything with the touch screen, I'm trying to get OTG working so I'll be able to run that app.
I suspect this is a hardware problem so if anyone know the whole screen assembly replacement then post link here, I'll appreciate it.
I got from eBay a cheap replacement screen (about USD 80). After installing it the resolution was very, VERY low. I went into display settings, and changed it, but this bricked the phone. It boots, but after the splash comes no picture. Only sounds and vibrations, so THE REST OF THE PHONE WORKS. I'm not able to boot it even in recovery/download mode with picture. Splash is the only visible pic.
I didn't find a way to reset the phone via Odin without flashing (can't flash At&T).
I cant flash it via Samsung Smart switch, because it asks me to activate USB transfer. Can't.
Any suggestions for resetting it, or lowering the resolution?
If the phone actually works but it's just the display causing it to not display anything, then maybe you can buy an adapter to HDMI and connect an external display to the phone. That way you might get an output.
same issue
any luck with the solution?

Nope. I wasn't able to play HDMI video without usb settings from the phone
