My question is, is it possible to create a nandroid backup from my XZ and restore it on another XZ, which is identical, but a new phone without problems?
My XZ is on 4.2.2. .latest stock firmware, rooted, locked bootloader, softkey mod, lockscreen text mod ,twrp + cwm dual recovery.
I'm not sure, but I'm hoping if I do a nandroid and put it on my microsd and then root the new phone and install cwm/twrp recovery I can then restore my nandroid from sdcard and everything will be exactly as before on the other phone?
All the system settings like wifi acces points, apns, contacts, sms, call log, launcher settings, shortcuts, apps, data, EVERYTHING?! Even the softkey mod will be there again automatically?
Of course assuming everything from the old phone was stored on the microsd like pictures, videos and music, etc. except system settings and data and my user apps which are on the internal memory and should be backed up with the nandroid?
Or am I missing something here? It would not work with stock recovery to restore the nandroid, would it? I have to root and install cwm first?
Or should I go the Titanium Backup way?
I'm just looking for the best, easiest, fastest and most complete solution.
Root new phone (can't get CWM/TWRP any other way) Install @[NUT] dual boot recovery and nandroid restore should work. Baseband on new phone won't change though.

so what is the worst that could happen if I restore the nandroid on another XZ? Could I brick my phone?! Would it just not work, e.g. not boot up or something? And could I make the device usable again by flashing a stock rom through flashtool?
Why won't the baseband not change and is it important in order for the nandroid/phone to work properly or can I flash or change that later if necessary?

In simple words, YES, you can restore your old XZ's NANDROID to a new one
Yes
The answer to this question is YES.
Just disable MD5 checksum verification and make the backup.
Once backup is made transfer the file to the XZ number 2.
Boot into CWM and find the recovery and restore from it.
It'll be exactly the same as XZ number 1
Things on the external SD card will not be backed up so you'll have to transfer that over manually.

I wipe my device yesterday to make a fresh install because my o2x has gotten laggy for the past few weeks, I made a titanium backup + CWM backup.
Sadly, some of my apps Data was not backed up for some reason, although the app is able to be restored by titanium, but no previous data backup. The most important apps for me, the LG Memo app and color notes which both i use to record memo. Now lost.
Then i tried to restore from CWM which supposed to be last resort, and it failed to restore halfway through the SYSTEM partition. So now i am totally lost.
This is my second time in a few months cwm failed to make a proper backup (i rarely use it anyway), and the sad thing is i will not know that it is a bad backup until i tried to restore it to see it fails.
So my question is, is there a recommended version of CWM i should use? I flashed my cwm from rom manager, i think it is version 4.0.2.0.
Secondly, is there a way to extract and restore my app + data from raw cwm backup?

Current cwm version is 5.0.2.8. I have installed it directly and never experienced a problem.
I think that you can manually extract your app and push it to your phone.
It's not much of the app itself, but the DATA that is associated with the app. Like i said, the LG Memo i can just get back by reinstalling the rom, but the memos i saved for the past year or so is what i want to get back.
I am daily user of cwm instaled thry RomMenager and it works perfectly. You can try application Appextractor to extract app from your cwm backup
You can also try restoring your /data partition only. CWM has an option to selectively restore parts of your backup. That way you can get your info back.

Thanks for all your help. I manage to restore the cwm backup after updating my cwm. It got stuck at boot but then i tried reinstalling the Spica's HP custom kernel.. everything's back again. Lucky~

I haven't worked much with CWM so far and couldn't find a proper answer in the threads here.
When I do a restore from a CWM backup I've not seen an option to choose just data or apps ... so I suppose the whole system including the rom and kernel will be restored. right?
As I'm happy to have CM 10.1 running after all finally, I'd just like to restore the data (SMS, etc.) from a CWM backup. Is there a possibility to do so?

I don't think you can do that. I used titanium backup pro to restore only the apps+setting to do that.

You can do an advanced restore and just restore /data but it's not recommented to do this coming from stock and restoring on CM I guess...

Stock and CM use different bases, and therefore restoring data of Stock can bring over some incompatible data/apk's and this can and most likely will cause a bootloop, from reading i think i can establish the safest way when your changing Rom's is to full wipe and 'clean' install. However when going from nightly to nightly this is not needed, and some data can be restored between same android version Rom's, for example CM10.2 is 4.3.1, data may work on slimbean 4.3.1.
Hope this clears things up for you.
I would also suggest to do a clean install without data recovery. If you want your data you can use Titanium Backup for App data. For the other personal stuff you can make a backup to your PC..

CWM Recovery, URGENT REPLY!!
I faced this problem that my rom got stuck on boot image, so I had another custom rom zip in my sdcard, so to install that I had to format my phone, now I have that backup and I only want to restore system settings, apps, app data, my data(sms, call logs and stuff), I dont want to restore the system or anything else which will make it get stuck on boot image again, now which choices shall I choose in advanced restore to restore only these specified items?
Please reply urgently as I have to travel in a few days and I wont be able to do it over there.

Thanks to jcase, we can now root out Razr i without unlocking the bootloader.
However, a locked BL prevents from installing CWM or another custom recovery.
I've googled and found Onandroid and Orange Backup, which are solutions for backing up a rom without a custom recovery.
Is it reliable?
What's the method to restore the created backup?
Can I set the path to the backup? (because our external sdcard is not mount at the standard mount point)

What I usually do is just backup my add data with Titanium Backup cause that the most important stuff.
Everything else can get flashed back.

I actually don't minf losing my app data.
I'm talking about the system, the rom itself.
How can I make a backup of the entire system and restore it with no custom recovery?
I know the stock recovery has an option to flash a zip, but in which format?
I also checked the Onandroid topic, and a custom recovery seems to be needed...

Hello, I was on pac rom few days ago as well, then i decided to try miui which is based on stock.
So here's the steps:
BACK UP ALL YOUR INTERNAL SD FILES AND FOLDERS because flashing ftf will erase everything inside internal sd, I never did a backup, lost all the chats and messages. :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:
copy all the flashable .zip u want to your sd card.
Flash a stock .ftf file .67 / .74 will do, then root it with any method u want
then flash original kernel using flashtool
then reboot str8 to recovery and proceed to do a clean wipe then flash any stock custom rom you want.
let me know if you have any doubts or question here.
My method is
1.Backup everything, photos, messages, app data using titanium backup, literally everything you need.
2.Store backups somewhere safe, especially titanium backup file(the whole thing).
3.Flash back stock rom and wiping everything.
4.Relock bootloader.
5.Now you have a clean phone, root it again and restore titanium backup app datas,
But be sure to only restore games, apps, but not system files, it may causes crash.
6.Restore the rest of them.

restore ta backup is the last step basically, ( after flashing stock kernel and stock rom)
i think you used the backup ta for windows from one thread if i'm not wrong,
just restore dry run just to make sure the ta is correct and then just restore it
(the phone should be power on like normal, with usb debugging on)
for your concern, cwm backup also can be used, just restore it and it's done, but, the app data and all other things will return to the state during the time you made the backup, so the progress you did in this custom rom wil not be saved, unless you used titanium backup after you restore nandroid.

Yep,BL unlocking does erase all your data!
1)when you restore the TA backup,your bootloader status goes back to locked,it will be like you never even touched the bootloader.But,the device wont boot up if you still have a custom kernel installed,so you have to flash back the stock kernel
2)I dont know about titanium backup
A better alternative is: Install XZDualRecovery(on locked bootloader) and make make a backup using your recovery of choice of /data(which contains all the apps/configurations/saved passwords blah...blah)onto the /sdcard.
Then unlock the bootloader and then restore the /data backup after.so everything including your apps and settings will be restored
5) as far as i know ,the sd card WON'T be wiped but you might as well take it out just to be safe
6)No,unlocking using flashtool will not install a recovery,the recovery is stored on the kernel(or not , if you flash a recovery image to the FOTAKernel Partition).

1) the TA backup returns the DRM keys to your default ( what you backed up) which means makes your phone untouched like its first day ( only about bootloader status,kernel,some DRMs like xreality and ... )

2)the titanium backup , saves the backups in the folder TitaniumBackup placed in sdcard(internal storage). you can copy the entire folder in your pc or external storage to save it from deleting and put it back whenever you need it

and my friend! unlocking the bootloader it self, will not erase any of your data !! none of those! its a procedure that makes your phone able to accept and operate from a custem kernel instead of pre-installed kernel.. but if you change your ROM or flash a new ftf file(official roms from sony) , your internal and your personal data such as appdata,contact & ... will be erased . and you can select whether wipe the internal or not!(thats depends on your choice) and your ex-sdcard will be safe unless you select to format it!

I got the apps and data back so nothing bad happened. I want to know how I can get clockworkmod on my device.
Android ROM manager says no official version of clockworkmod is supported for xperia z1. But then in a menu it also lists TWRP and clockworkmod as already installed on the system and asks if ROM manager can use those for its purposes. So that's why I asked if flashtool installs custom recovery as well.
Whenever I try to boot into recovery to make a backup, it boots normally instead. I hold down the volume up/down buttons and press them quickly on boot, the phone vibrates multiple times but no recovery mode, which leads me to believe there is no custom recovery installed, but ROM manager refuses to download clockworkmod and says there are two installed already! Neither of which can be accessed(if they even are on the system).
Sorry for this convoluted message

To get a recovery on your phone,You have to A) Flash A Kernel using fastboot commands or B) Install XZDualRecovery
Since you have already unlocked your BL,flashing a new kernel would be the best option as it give you tons of new features like DoubleTap2Wake and Overclocking(or underclocking!!).Check out the android developement section for kernels and roms!

Could you please point out a thread to me that shows how to flash a custom kernel without a custom recovery in place?
Does this mean all xperia users have to install a custom recovery through commands?

All the kernels for the Stock Sony Roms for the z1 come with a recovery bundled in it(just basic cwm,not fun at all).I think some CM/AOSP based kernels lack recoveries(but i dont know for sure)!!
See,other phones have separate stock recoveries on dedicated partitions(only for software updates,no custom ****) and you can flash a custom recovery into that recovery partition and load it up.But sony....oh no...sony doesnt load a usable true-ish-recovery into its phones nor do xperias have a real partition for the recovery...so we have to get by with these tricks.....
Well the best you can do is you can install a custom kernel and then flash a recovery to the FOTAKernel partition.then the kernel will the load the recovery from the fotakernel instead.
