A friend of mine tried to root their Vivid using Z4 Root and it appears they were not successful.
The phone is now stuck on a black screen with a green down arrow with a circular green arrow formation around it. http://s13.postimage.org/82qs23ezr/photo_1.jpg
Can someone please give me some guidance in fixing this phone.
Thanks
Relock your bootloader first!
Download the official ics ruu for the HTC vivid. Pull the battery , place it back in and go into bootloader mode ( power and vol down ).
Plug up the vivid to your computer and fire up fastboot
On your terminal type :
fastboot rebootRUU
Start up the official ics RUU for the vivid, follow all instructions, return to stock.
Don't use z4 root on the vivid, its useless. Read the pinned topic that hasoon2000 put up on the all in one toolkit

Thanks for the responses.
Sorry for my long delay to reply back, but I just got the phone in my possession.
I can get into the recovery mode. I took a picture and attached what my recovery mode screen looks like. **I know I am charging my battery**
I am currently downlownloading RUU_HOLIDAY_ICS_35_S_Cingular_US_3.26.502.56_Radio_3.02.4740.14_34.22.701040.19_release_246712_signed.exe - I hope this is the stock rom you were referring to or should I download another?
Should I follow the instructions on [SUPERGUIDE] ICS-Root-Flash-Stock?
Thanks

yes it is the right one and from looking at the pic the bootloader is locked so no need to relock make sure the drivers are installed hook the phone up to the computer and run the ruu this will also wipe the phone making it like out of box stock ics
---------- Post added at 04:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:41 PM ----------
yeah follow the superguide
Thanks for the quick replies.
I will give it a try and post back if it works.
Will try as soon as this RUU downloads, it is taking forever to download, estimate is 2hours.
Are there any advantages to S-OFF?
Thanks
mines s-on so i would say for me no are you downloading ruu from htc
I just found this thread "Official AT&T Vivid ICS RUU from HTC" - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1564776 ... this is a much quicker download will be finished in a minute.
Would this also work for me?
Yes it will

The last thing I can think to try is pull battery and go back to hboot and try agian if that does not work take it back to att and tell them it messed up while trying to upgrade with the official ruu from HTC sense the bootloader shows locked instead of relocked they should swap it out

Got the RUU to run but it is constantly getting stuck at 34%.
Is there an older version rom RUU I can try? Or an image file or something?
Phone is from [email protected] don't think can return it to ATT.

Here is a IMG to go back to gb then just ota to ics.
Thanks.
I can't even get to fastboot anymore.
I have 4 exclamation marks in triangles in the corners of a black screen.
I could still attempt to RUU but it keeps getting stuck at 34%

That is a known problem some phones have a defect call HTC tell them what you have posted above the phone will still be under warranty and they will replace or repair

When the SHTF, try the recovery project. Z4root is only good for select 2.1 and 2.2 devices. The HTC Vivid comes stock with 2.3+ or ICS.
If you're looking to root if you do decide to go replacement if all else fails, upgrade to ICS when you get the new vivid and follow hasoon2000's guides.
Or try the method below

If you want to give this a shot to restore your vivid, try this out. This is how I recovered a vivid in a similar situation regarding a stalled RUU refresh.
Try to get into hboot using ADB when you see the triangle screen.
adb reboot bootloader, if this fails then type
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Hopefully you got the fastboot hboot screen by now.
If you see the hboot screen then try unlocking your device, if you can without issue then proceed. If it is unlocked continue
Install the ICS CWM for vivid from fastboot ( check the pinned guides on these forums )
Enable USB mode from CWM
Take this time out to retrieve any data such as pictures, videos or files you need to get from the internal sd.
Go to wipe, wipe boot, wipe data then format the internal sd.
Select back when complete, turn off the vivid. Get back into bootloader mode by pressing power and down on the volume button.
Get into fastboot relock the bootloader only if you want a stock ics from the RUU.
If so, then get into fastboot USB mode, open up your terminal/command prompt, navigate to where you keep your fastboot executable, then type :
fastboot rebootRUU
Start up the ICS RUU only!.
I didn't want to risk flashing a custom Rom over the problem I experienced through cwm, but I would have to say that might work also, but mantra is, when all else fails, back to stock.
When finished complete a somersault ninja flip lol.
Huge problems do occur when you try to downgrade back to GB from ICS. Partition changes, etc...
Keep us posted.

i was using the s-off tool and i was trying the wire trick and the juopuntbear screen just stays on. i can get to bootloader but nothing works not recovery nothing. says cant find device when i retry the s-off or anything.. this device is a tough one hope i didnt brick it any advice appreciated
If u can get into bootloader you are not in real bad shape at all

but nothing works recovery does not work....when i turn phone on that juobear screen comes up and just reboots every min or so. when i try to reflash recovery it just says waiting for device
well i got cwm back and i tried to flash holics rom just to try and get back went thru all the options and hit install sure enough right back to the damn juonbear image what do i have to do to get rid of this thing
could someone help or tell me im bricked. fastboot dont work my device fails to connect to pc. cwm works and boot loader works.
Have you tried putting a stock, PH39IMG.zip on your SD card and boot into bootloader?
i tried 2 ph39img.zips one gives me back cwm. the other was a 35mb one it flashed then still htc bootscreen then jonubear logo...where do i get a stock ph39?
I tried a quick search and I can't seem to find one either that looks like it might work. I think it would have to be modified to go back to stock. There are others on here far better than me, I just remember keeping a ***IMG.zip file on for my Inspire to get me out of similar, situations. I'm sure some of the more knowledgeable bunch will be around later or tomorrow and they will be much more help than me.
I guess you've tried the RUU as well?
I fixed the problem I found a ph39img.zip in a post that took me back to stock gingerbread then updated to ics.
The reason fastboot was not working was when I was trying the wire trick it caught and disconnected the charger/USB.

Good job figuring that out.
Thanks ottergap. I will keep the IMG file in case people need it.

I messed my phone up tonight and got it stuck in a bootloop since there is currently no RUU out I'm left with no choice but to go back to the store. Does anyone know if T-Mobile stores have the stock RUU and can restore it?

Hold volume down while it bootloops. I guarantee you'll make it into hboot.

If your problem is transferring files, can you not go to recovery and use usb-ms (while attached to the computer) which will then open the memory of the phone on the computer. That's what I did to transfer stock ruu when I recently bricked my evo 4g.

I'm currently in the process of trying to push a nandroid backup to the device via adb. The problem is that there's no stock ruu for tmobile as of yet so the only choice I have is to recover via a nandroid.

no success at all, I'm gonna head to the tmobile store here in a few and see what I can get worked out
I just came back from the bell store, and they said that they could exchange me for a new one but they don't have any in stock until Tuesday.
I soft bricked my nexus devices dozen times in the past few years, and was easily restored to stock. Lesson learned by me, never root a non nexus device within 1 week of its release.

Why even bother? Just push a ROM, wipe system and data, then flash it.
You don't need a ruu. What did you do to get into a bootloop.

I managed to fixed mine finally, Installed twrp and mounted my USB via otg. Then flashed a custom ROM, rebootef, still suck at the boot screen. Flashed a custom kernel, and it finally got passed the boot screen.
So happy to get my One back up and running again.

And now im trying to install the ota update at the Settings-About Phone-Update software. It fully installs and then goes to the updating screen and restarts back to the same software. It looks like you don't have a custom recovery installed. Try installing one, you know how I presume.
Isnt that going back to rooting my phone? I wanna stay unrooted. If i unrooted my phone i should be able to update my phone normally from my About phone-Update software. It installs but resets back to the stock
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
The only thought is you may have wrong recovery. I would suggest to run ruu for ATT if you can or Soff and then do it
I ran the ruu for at&t already. Domt get me wrong the phone works great i just wanna update it

Then that's odd issue. Your other options will be to install custom recovery and sideload or manually install OTA file.
So I got this htc one from a friend who was apparently trying to root it, it has cwm installed and thats it, everything else was wiped clean.
When you press the power button it powers on the the htc white screen nd stays there until the battery dies.
My question is, for me to flash a new rom to it do I need
Radios
Bootloaders
Etc
Pls anyone help me, and any rom suggestions would be appreciated.

No you don't need any of these, they are completely different from the ROM. Read this guide on how to sideload a ROM.zip than you can flash it and have a working phone again. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2318497
