The first is typically ROMs that are based on stock builds, some with customization.
The second is typically non-stock ROMs, like AOSP and the like, or sometimes Stock-based ROMs with HEAVY customization like the Badseed Tranquil ROM.
That's what I always thought, but I'm always seeing AOSP roms and Stock ROMs in the wrong threads. For example there is the Beanstalk ROM and a couple other CM ROMs in the normal thread and then there's the Badseed ROM in the Original thread =/
Some people want to be rebels.
I have also wondered the same thing. I Would vote to join the two forums because more people title the posts correctly than post to the correct forum.

The ORIGINAL work is in Original Android Dev. It does not necessarily need to 've AOSP. And the reason you see AOSP roms in regular Android Dev at all as opposed to Original Android Dev, is because those are largely based on other AOSP sources and hence are not ORIGINAL.
The Badseed rom is in Original Android Dev because it's not just a tweaked and optimized stock rom anymore, it's a whole new beast....I mean, have you guys seen any other rom where there's a toggle to invert the entire thing? Exactly...it's just insane the level to which they've taken customization and remade the entire stock rom.
If you guys are in a reading mood, this post by jayharper08 explains it perfectly. I'm not sure why a similar sticky hasn't been created in the Sprint HTC One forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=37038201
Again, that makes no sense... There's no organization if both stock and AOSP can be in either forums. It should be Stock and AOSP... Nothing more and nothing less. I would also like to see a separate forum for Kernels, like a sub-forum to each of the forums. I know there isn't an abundance of Kernels out there for our particular device, but it should be that way for all devices to remove clutter.... especially for those that have a bunch of kernels available.
If it was worked out this way then we wouldn't have to tag everything like [ROM][AOSP][CUSTOM] before we even see what the names is.
Makes perfect sense here.

I've flashed a few custom ROMs + Kernels on my Nexus 7, but I always return to stock. I find stock JB to just be rock-solid, with great battery life.
I've found that most custom ROMs have some tiny issues, and they always bug me. Same with custom kernels. There's always an occasional crash here or there, or some unexpected jerkiness.
But I guess it's always a compromise. If you want features/performance, you'll have to live with bugs/lower battery life. But, being a Nexus, we'll get newer, feature-filled versions of Android right away!
So what about you guys? Do you feel that custom ROMs/kernels are lacking that perfection and finesse the stock ROM has? Or is your custom ROM completely stable with absolutely no bugs?
I love the custom ROMS. No complaints from me. I prefer some version of CM...usually AOKP. They are always upgrading it, so there are some small problems with it at times but I really enjoy it too much to complain or go back to stock. Don't get me wrong stock is very smooth with few problems.

I so agree with the above.. Also your opinion is welcome but due note that these developers are doing this as a community effort for FREE.. They improve our devices give us some things Google decided to leave out. Also im not sure you are aware of this or not . But often you will see some of the So called custom rom stuff injected into future GOOGLE STOCK ROMS... Google does watch the development community and use there code from time to time . My guess is alot more then they would tell...

Cyanogenmod works perfectly on both my phone and nexus 7. It's the best of both worlds really. Clean stock look but with a sprinkle of customization.

My bootloader isn't even unlocked on my N7 and it's only unlocked on my GN so I can flash updates once OTA or images are posted.
I agree that all the roms are great. My favorite is PA, love that rom. But after a while i just feel like going back to stock. But then its not long before i am back on pa.

I don't like custom Roms on devices that have the latest version of android available. I just root. Adding a custom kernel only makes things unstable.

I agree with the OP on ROMS, I haven't found one "better" than stock yet. Different yes, more/other customizations, yes. But so far not better. Yes, the devs do this for free, and for their own reasons. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't state our preferences. There are kernels that improve the device greatly, running one myself. But I've tried more than half a dozen custom ROMS and none gave me anything that would make me stick with it. Always went back to stock.
Not knocking all the hard work and effort. It's pretty amazing what some of these devs come up with, wish I had the knowledge and skills they have. Might try to pick up some basics, just so I understand more of everything involved with it. But I'm a system guy, not really a software dev.
Keep in mind we are nitpicking, custom features on new code it takes sometime implement them properly. I am rocking stock at the moment with stock recovery just cause Google is moving fast this time of year.
So take any bug with the custom Roms like this, yes it has more features, you may or may not be affected by bugs. If that bothers you then rock stock. Cause once cm hits stable that's when everything usually falls into place.
Just hopefully we can have less people posting silly complaints on in process releases. Go look in the Ubuntu thread, some user is just posting "its slow" or " there is no reason to use this" as if was a final product makes me smh

Heh... I'm NOT in denial.
I haven't used a single ROM in the android development I only used ones from original development. Slim bean, eos, rasbean... all exceptional ROMs. Currently on rasbean and its by far the best for myself. Used trinity and Francos kernel have had better results with Francos, his is just about an optimised stockish kernel.
Always go with the people that know what they're doing. Not somebody who just builds aosp and throws some scripts and quadrant hacks to allude "speed"

Nothing better than pure stock Android on a NEXUS device. Period.
It's different on a non nexus Device due to carrier's skins but on a NEXUS device come on people you know there's nothing better than pure stock.

We shoul be lucky we have so many options for our Nexus 7, Stock ROM is rock stable and smooth , and to add to that we have almost 7-8 different custom ROMS which are also stable each with their own features and 3-4 different kernels to play with
I am flashing different ROM every 4-5 days
Play around people thats what I like about Android - complete control of your device and Nexus - quick latest stock updates and lots of custom development
Agreed, I prefer stock rom, but also I like to root it, and change fonts...

Hi all,
Is there a stock android ROM 4.2.2 similar to the Nexus 4 available to the HTC One. Had a little look in the Development section couldn't find one.
With the announcement of the HTC One Nexus Experience it has perked my interest however there's a possibility it won't come to the UK, therefore looking at getting a One and putting a stock ROM on it.
I am aware of Cyanogen Mod however I'm not a fan of it.

If you look in the right section you'll find some...

...yeah, no.
Talk about disrespectful....CyanogenMod is the closest you're going to get to bone-stock Android for a long time. The NE was only announced today. It doesn't even start shipping for another month.

I get that this seems to be a popular assumption, but that's not as much of a given thing as many of you would like to hope. HTC isn't obligated to release the source code for the NE One (only the kernel). If they bake Beats/Camera stuff into that ROM, there's no guarantee that our CM10.1 build will get it.
I have no doubt someone will turn the NE's ROM into a rooted stock ROM for you to flash, but I really wouldn't expect it to help CM10.1 all that much.
Once the release the HTC One with stock rom, will it be easier to port it?
Will we be able to get a fully functional working rom?
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
Of course it will be easy to port it. Porting aosp roms to the LG Optimus G is dead simple because internally it is identical to the Nexus 4. Same logic applies here

Jheez, don't think I'll ever bother asking a question again no need for the rudeness!
And for the individual who took offence to me to not liking CM its personal preference I've never liked CM same way I've never like the AOKP either. It sure is a widespread popular ROM and I'm not insulting the developers in fact I respect anyone who can come up with a good stable ROM for android phones.
Having already bricked my phone trying to put Revolution HD on it, (no sprint support) I thought I'd ask what people are currently running and their opinions. Most of the roms in our Development section are mostly graphical changes it seems, and lighter versions of cleanROM.
Are there any roms that are really popular for us poor Sprint customers?
I've run OMJ's, Mack's Dark Horse and settled on d3rp. Love the mobile commander and bareback options.
I feel like we have plenty of options, don't feel left out at all.

I agree with the general sentiment, but if you want variety, have a go at the Original Development section. AOSP ROMs for this device are certainly out and about-- I didn't mind my experience with it (besides the then-prevalent sleep of death "bug").
Go to Sprint HTC One Android Development
Now go look at the views and mainly "replies" to each rom. That will give you a general idea of the favored roms. The method I use when getting a new phone or when a friend or family member comes over with a new phone and wanting a rom installed

Hi I know this is covered in the FAQ regarding the definition of Original Android Development but I can't find the answer to this: are "Original Android Development" roms less stable and more risky than the regular Android Development roms? Should I be expecting much more risk if I use a rom like PAC Man instead of something from the Android Development forum?
Any rom can be risky lol.
Most roms in the Origanal Dev section are build from source meaning pure android no crap over-layed(sense) You will see custom kernels there, also which are also built from source.
As long as you are flashing roms from the Sprint forums to a Sprint One you will be fine just make sure you have a nandroid backup just in case there is a problem
Stock roms are more stable for my experiences.
Sent from my HTC ONE swg
In my opinion, there is very little that is truly 'original' these days; it's like rock n roll, everything has been done at least once. But, as a rule, custom non-Sense or HTC based ROMs will typically be more cutting edge, but will also have more bugs. More stability will usually be found on stock or stock-based ROMs.
It depends on the device my cousin has the HTC One and can't boot Dirty Unicorn but I can and pacman runs smoother on his phone.
Sent from my One using xda app-developers app
Thanks everyone. That's what I figured - it sounds like using original roms tend to be buggier as a general rule of thumb? I like cutting edge stuff (I used to have an HTC EVO and had MIUI which was great but always had some shortcoming like no 4G).
Right now, what are considered the best roms for HTC One? I guess I'd like to know a few just very stable ROMs that I should resort if I need a stable rom and then some of the most innovative roms that are really pushing the limit with cool designs, etc.
Also, isn't it a pain in the ass that you have redownload all your apps and adjust your settings when you flash a new rom? Is there a way to just restore your apps and settings onto a new rom?
People will tell you to flash the roms yourself, and asking which roms are best is generally frowned upon. I've seen threads closed because of that question. Having said that, and hopefully not breaking any rules or stepping on any toes, it looks like a lot of people are experiencing issues with 5.5 based roms. Personally, I've been using the Bad Boyz 5.0 rom with some tweaks from omj's mod pack for the past few weeks, and have found it to be solid and bug free.
Lots of ROMs are being developed for our device (go devs, keep them coming), some stock, others with (new) features.
Is there a place where we can compare these ROMs based on their features?
Scanning all the threads, doesn't really give a clear view.
I know the best way to know what a ROM is all about is to actually try it, but a comparison chart would provide a nice shortlist to start from.
Read the op of each rom thread? Usually tells you the features.

Some do this better than others. Many make you go to their website & click around till you find something. Others list a bunch of stuff that many of us have no idea what most of them do. So a thread / wiki that gives the character & main features in a simplified way would be very helpful and welcome.
As great as the idea seems. Making a wiki or a video for a rom gets outdated quick. Roms and kernels are always changing day by day, new features are being added and removed.
The best advice I can give you is that, download the roms that interest you. If they interest you, flash them and give them a try for 10-15 minutes without installing all of your apps. If you happen to not like the rom, simply do a nandroid restore to a previous backup.
The roms in original development tend to make their own code and development tends to kang code (use code from others).
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Time sure is a factor. And agreed, ROMs and their features could change fairly quick.
Trail and error (so to speak) would still be the best way. As a new Nexus user I'm not familiar with the "popular" ROMs and their devs, so it's pretty overwhelming with all those ROMs to choose from.
If only there was a uniform way to setup the OP for each ROM on XDA.
Thanks for chiming in guys!

One of the ways you can see if a ROM is popular is by the number of posts and views in that thread as well as how active it is. Some of the roms have YouTube videos for the kit kat version or even lollipop so that can give you a jist of the rom.
