Hi,
I have owned a factory unlocked Galaxy Note GT-N7000 for about 9 months now. I have since rooted it but kept it on Android 4.0.4 and recently put a Speakout Wireless sim card in it [it's a canadian carrier that re-sells Rogers Wireless] (I used to have a TIM (italian carrier) sim in it).
It worked fine for about 3 and a half weeks. Then, suddenly, it refused to recognize the sim card. I ordered a replacement SIM card, and it did not fix anything either.
It also displayed some alarming other signs that something really isn't working:
If I hold down the power button, instead of displaying the normal power menu that allows me to switch to airplane mode, reboot or shutdown, it now shuts down immediately
If I enter *#06# to get the IMEI number of the phone, the IMEI window appears, but it's empty
If I enter the settings menu and phone informations, the IMEI number is shown as "Unknown"
I am really at a loss as to how I should proceed now
easy hack it with haxor talk thought terminal to other dimension...
no efs backup = your screwed.
so dig in and find a 5 part rom with efs. img, use the freaking search and pcodin it onto you phone, drketan guide way.
that gives you generic imei enought for service, unless your country or provider blocked it lmao

That is very helpful, thank you.
One question tho: point #1 says to look for "/dev/block/mmcblk0p1 on /efs type ext4(rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime,commit=20,barrier=1, nodelalloc, data=ordered)". Not such line is present in the output of the command on my phone. Does that mean that I should proceed with point #2 or not?

I've done point #1 and #2, and the phone started working again (I was able to take calls, etc) but the IMEI was a temporary 0049 etc number.
When I did point #3, it stopped working, it reverted to the blank IMEI issue detailed above.
I have now redid point #1 and #2 and it works again with the weird IMEI. What am I to do now tho?

The only way to restore lost imei is either contact cvxcvx directly, or Samsung. Samsung will charge a lot more than cvxcvx.

I went to stock GB from an ICS ROM, and then to Helly Bean. Everything seems to work fine except any kind of networking. I cannot connect to 3G or AT&T's stuff (text messages, calls, etc.). I can connect to my wifi network and use it. In the Settings on my phone, Baseband Version and IMEI are unknown. The only thing in my efs folder in Lost and Found. I have no backups, as I wasn't aware that this problem existed.
Not sure what to do. Right now I'm leaving the SIM card and battery out for a few minutes, and then putting them back in to see if that helps. I'll probably flash a modem as well. Any suggestions? Any known fixes?
edit: Tried the battery removal and modem flashing, neither worked. Now going back to stock.
Edit2: going back to stock did nothing. I tried another SIM card, and that one also does not work.
I went back to stock GB again (third time now) and it's now recognizing my IMEI, but I still can't text or call.
Check your APN. And don't forget to backup that efs folder...just in case.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium
It's not letting me look at the APN settings because it still doesn't detect a SIM card, only my IMEI.
Anything under Baseband ?? If not try flashin a modem through Odin.

Okay, I was definitely having a legitimate problem earlier, before I flashed to stock. At some point in this repair process, my SIM card ended up in my phone upside-down.... woops.

This thread most likely has to answer.
Check your APNs to make sure they match your carrier's.
Check your IMEI to make sure it matches the one with your phone. If it's not the case, you'll need to go back to stock KK4, backup your efs folder with a app that has root rights (like ES File Explorer) and restart the falshing process.
A good backup would be suggested before going to stock!
same problem baseband is unknown and imei is null. help
Hi, here's the story, I flashed CM10 but because I'm new with this phone model I didnt new I had to bacup my eff folder, so when I flashed CM10 it changed my imei, now I cant make any calls or whatever that requires network, I read in here and other forums that I can repair that going back to stock gingerbread but the thing is that I suddenly I can't enter download mode, I tried entering through "adb reboot download" and it only reboots, I tried with the volume +/- pluging usb cable but it still doesnt works, the only method I havent tried yet is with the jig, which I would have to buy or make myself, so I was wondering if I can flash the stock rom from cwm, I couldnt find any zip of that rom, only the odin ones, could you please tell me if I can do that? or gime me a link to the stock cwm flashable rom?

I'm in a similar situation for a different reason. My USB port is broken (bought phone used and it came with a beta CM9). Having problems with not getting any mobile service so I want to flash back to stock and start there. While I'm a software developer, I'm new to smartphones so I want to make sure I get this right.
It seems I can't just download the one-click because it needs USB. You said above that "Mobile Odin" could be used with the one-click if you have root. I assume I do, but what is the tell-tale sign of that? From all my reading so far it seems you can lose it also. Anyway, so if I d/l Mobile Odin from the Play store and d/l one-click with root onto my SD card, I should be good to go - just run the app, select the file and follow the instructions and I'll be back to stock Froyo?
Thank you!

If you are on CM9 then you are most definitely rooted. However if you want to check go to your app drawer and check for a superuser icon or Super SU icon. If you have either one of those you're good to go. I've personally never used Mobile Odin but I would have to say what you described sounds like the right steps. My question to you is why not go to gingerbread instead of froyo?

Yep, I have the icon. Why do you sometimes lose root when flashing a different ROM? I wouldn't think simply having that app is all there is to it. Anyway, I noticed after I posted my query that the Pro version of Mobile Odin has "EverRoot" so you never lose root apparently.
I figured I'd start with Froyo since that is what my phone should have shipped with and what my new carrier expects. If I still don't see any mobile networks, I figure I'm down to a SIM or hardware problem. I can get wifi on my home network fine, but I live in the middle of a city and see nothing show up when I do a Search for Network Operators. Perhaps I'm wrong being new to these, but I would think I should see at least AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile appear on a list when I search.
The odd thing is when I do Automatically Select a network operator is says I'm "registered on network" yet there's no signal (-110+ dbM and 0-1 asu) and phone status shows me as unknown network and disconnected.
If it does work with Froyo, I'll work my way to GB and ICS and back to CM to see where it breaks.

Well pretty much every custom ROM you install is rooted from the start. If you were on a stock setup you wouldn't be rooted unless you had done it yourself.
With your current setup go to settings>about phone> status and compare the imei listed there with the one under your battery. Also check settings>about phone and look for your baseband. If your imei matches but your baseband says unknown then you are missing a modem and that's fixable without going back to stock. If the imei doesn't match then your efs folder has been erased or corrupted and you will definitely have to go back to stock.
Also if that's the case once you get back to stock backup your efs folder to prevent future issues.

So flashing back to stock WITH bootloader keeps the root (but then you're not technically 100% stock since it didn't come that way).
IMEIs match.
Baseband is I9000UGKG3. I'd also thought of trying a diff modem but this one works for others obviously. I'm in the Midwest if that makes a difference.
Other Status info...
Network: Unknown
Mobile network type: GPRS:1
Service State: Out of Service
Mobile Network state: Disconnected
It does list my correct phone number
IMEI SV: 09
Another newbie question: whenever I do finally get service, how can you tell what speed the data connection is?
Thank you for your help.

Actually stock with boot loaders is just that. Bone stock with the boot loaders added into the flash package you won't be rooted with that package.
The fact that your imei is correct and you have a modem but still have no service is concerning... are you using it on att or are you trying to use a different carrier?
As far as data speed when you're up and running use a speed test app from the play store.

I'll worry about figuring out root stuff later if needed.
Phone was supposed to be unlocked. I'm using it on an MVNO that uses T-Mobile's network. I get no errors or messages when inserting the SIM card so assume I am indeed unlocked. It does load 3 APNs that happen to also use T-Mobile but I must manually enter the APN for my carrier, which I've triple checked with their support.
I'm leaving now to swap SIM cards from the same service on a known good phone to see if mine works in that phone or that one works in mine.

Hmmm, is there some way to check other than throwing in a random SIM? Unfortunately, my SIL's phone is newer so she had a smaller SIM card
Most people seem to get a card locked message if they are not unlocked and install a non-AT&T SIM.

That is actually a link to a tutorial on how to go about unlocking it. The way I see it is if you follow the steps you'll know if it was already unlocked and be able to unlock it if not.
I know that the process works because I followed it to unlock my own captivate.
Edit: I did the manual way and did not use any of the apps listed.

Phone will not recognize sim/ imei "Unknown"/ baseband "Unknown"? *Updated*
Updated title because problem has now changed.
current problem--
Phone is stock, randomly stopped getting signal factory reset phone using keypad, now phone will not recognize sim card, the imei is blank and the baseband is unknown. Tried reseating the sim, and powering on off.
initial problem--
After having a problem free note for some time now it randomly stopped working. I cannot make a call/ text or use data but the wifi works and the phone functions outside of those uses. When making a call I get various errors in the form of Mobile network not available/ Not registered on network and when i go into mobile networking settings> network operators it takes a while when searching and tells me to either try again later or gives me a message "error while searching for networks." When i take the sim out all together I get bars of service but when the sim is in it either gives me a circle with a line through it or a empty signal bar triangle.
I called straight talk customer support as i thought it was a problem with the service and they told me I had a bad sim card. I have since checked the sim in another phone and it works fine. I have tried multiple working sims in other phones and no luck in mine. The phone appears to be recognizing the sim as the apn settings are adjusting based on what sim i put in. I have tried to take out the battery, take out the sim, factory restore but nothing seems to work. I have also checked the imei number online to see if it was blocked or something and it said it was not. I took it to a local phone repair shop but after toying around with it for a hour they didn't know what was wrong, so here i am, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. thanks.
May be the phone is network locked. is it asking for some kind of key or pin anytime or when restarting the phone?
where did this begin to happen?

I know the sim isn't the problem as it works in another phone.
You may want to try flashing stock GB with PC Odin...then with stock GB recovery do a factory reset.
Don't do anymore factory resets if your on ICS and completely stock - you will kill your device...see the brick bug sticky

I'm assuming i have to root my phone in order to look at this folder? I'm looking into this now.
yes.
when restarting phone do you get the password prompt for the sim pincode, could be sim is not registered?
Anyways a stock phone should not do this. Its a case for customer service to fix efs. That appears to have instantaniously corrupted(!) first case I have ever seen of this.
Almost cannot believe it.
Without sim, is the imei there? I am suspecting your emei was gone before which you never noticed then. Is it even a new phone?

Hey guys i have a problem.
I bought an LTE on T-mobile off ebay with a damaged digitizer. when i went to pick it up, the guy had his sim in and proved it accepted calls etc.
i got a new screen and did a factory restore. the new screen had a frame attached and i threw the old one away losing the IMEI number.
I get a t-mobile sim and activated it. i put it in the phone but it wouldnt pick up a signal at all.
it wouldnt detect a sim, even when i put in a sim from another network.
i checked settings and i says:
mobile network type: unknown
Service state: out of service
Mobile network state: disconnected
My phone number: unknown
ERI version: not avaliable
IMEI: unknown
i read online to try flashing a new ROM so i gave that a go but it didnt change anything.
i also read to check antenna connection but it connected ok and no damage on connectors.
does anyone have any idea what could be causing it and how i can solve it?

Hi!
Resume:
My note has some weird problem with the modems. I'm getting "Unknown" baseband, modem verison, phone number, IMEI etc. with all the modems I tried except one, which shows the correct IMEI and modem version but still not working(I can even see the mobile networks with that one, but I it doesn't connect and gives me "Refresing SIM data" messages).

I always have been using custom roms(only TW) and updating my note to the latest version and I never had a problem.
One day, some months after the last rom update, started to lose the phone network conection and I was getting pop-ups with "Refreshing SIM data"(was very annoying because that was turning on the phone screen every few minutes). Sometimes I had phone network and sometimes I hadn't. The disconnections became more frequently. The phone also started to eat up the free space for apps, so I had to remove several apps to install or update even a small one.
So I decided to change to a different ROM to see if that fixes both problems, but I got the actual problem.
I was in AllianceRom v3 JB when that happened.
I flashed this AryaMod 5.5 JB following their instructions and I got this weird problem. In the "About phone" says that the Baseband version, IMEI, IMEI SV, Network and My phone number are "Unknown". I can't even search for mobile networks because it says "Insert SIM card" when I try to open the Mobile networks menu. Tehre are no signal bars, only a "denied" icon on the status bar.
I tested all JB modems and some from ICS from the "all modems" thread, but I was getting the same "Unknown" things in each one, except the XXLSO, where the Baseband version, IMEI and IMEI SV were okey. I could also find mobile networks with this modem, and the "Refreshing SIM data" thing returned, but it was not possible to connect to a network. With this one, there aresignal bars, but they are empty.
I flashed the AllianceRom and even the old ICS rom I had before, but the problem persisted, even with the modems they came with.
Now I'm on the latest Samsung rom(LT4), unmodified and flashed with odin and the problem persist.
I found this old thread. His initial problem is very similar to mine, but they don't know what caused it nor how to fix it.
I have also found something about corruped IMEIs that you can fix doing something with the ADB and restoring EFS folder, but I think that is not my case because I can see my original IMEI with the XXLSO modem (and I my EFS folder looks OK, anyway I have no backup of that).
I don't expect to get a step-by-step tutorial about how to fix this, but I hope somebody can put me in the right direction. I will post the solution if I find one!
What are the first 4 digits of your imei

Thanks for reading, the four first digits are 3595.
Maybe this is a stupid question, but have you tried re-seating your Sim card, or even a different Sim?

I tried both. Also I have been using the SIM with another phone for weeks and works fine. Tried to take out the battery and wait few minutes and other "stupid" things like re-flash a ROM, re-wipe all, etc..
Maybe it's the programed obsolescence, you can use the Note as PDA but if you want a phone, go and buy another...
@ThaiDai or @nokiamodeln91 I believe knows of a way to fix this if its an EFS issue...but you don't have a developer imei
Did you have an old efs backup from when u first rooted your phone?

If it was a corrupted IMEI issue then it should not come back when the xxlso modem is flashed.. And also not sure why it goes to unknown when any other modem is used.. Could there be any physical damage to the sim tray? Dropped the phone?
I have no backup of efs... I had one "nandroid" but deleted it after everything was okey...
I could delete the efs folder, so this unknown problem will turn a known one :victory:
I dropped the phone a very few times, maybe in one of those something broke a little and has increased more with the usage? (the disconnections from the network became spontaneus and progressively).
I found this other thread, I could try the same but I can't find the original GB firmware, every link I find is in hotfile.
Check in Samsung-updates.com firmware section. There are 2 GB roms there..
I found a efs backup from may 2012, probably auto-created when first installed ICS.
I flashed the stock GB rom and restored it following this tutorial for my .tar.gz file, but didn't work, so the device may be lost. I only have 3 more backups: boot.img, data.ext4.tar and system.ext4.tar. I guess they are useless to fix this...
Thay you for you support!
