I noticed this today, on the train with phone charged and kept getting a tiny electric shock on my arm when holding phone with left hand and putting right arm on an arm rest which I'm not sure what it was made of. They were just little sharp pains.
Then made a call and the shock was going through my ear which was a little painful. I removed the charging cable and everything is now fine.
Obviously this should happen. I'm using a charger I bought from eBay from a UK company, its a mercury charger (usb741uk). Need to see if the same thing happens with my genuine HTC charger.
Wonder if it's the charger or the phone.

Something similar happens to me if I'm holding my phone while it's charging and I'm also touching my heater (don't know if that's what it's actually called in English) that's made out of cast iron. This also happens with other phones (one s, galaxy nexus).
My guess is that by touching something metallic you "complete the circuit" and the current passes through you.
It's absolutely normal.

No its not, they would never pass certification if you received a shock whilst using it on charge

This is correct, it appears the charger is not properly isolated from the mains, there's no way it would pass British certification.
Throw it away and buy a proper one.
The charges I am using are official ones that came with the phones and they still give me a little jolt if I touch cast iron fixed to the wall. These are both htc and Samsung official charges. This even happens when i hood the charger from me wireless router with my bare hand and use my bare knee to touch the heating element.
So... If you get a very minor jolt in the part of your body touching the grounded element, I'm gonna stick to "it's normal".

The issue is not related with the charger... It's only related with static electricity happening on your body. If it were from charging the the shock should have been continuous.

Stick to what you want, but it's not normal. Maybe you should seek the advice of an electrician, the wiring in your house has a ground problem.

Yup. Very wise. Coming from a family of certified electricians I am well aware just how seriously this should be taken (my brother condemned a Warburtons factory for less, shut it down for weeks!)
Some people think they're immortal until the red mist descends because of an electric charge passing from one hand to the other.

Is it cold? I know when it's cold, you conduct electricity way easier. It hasn't gotten cold where I live yet, so I can't justify my answer. I'm assuming it's the metal around the phone. Meaning I should ask, do you have a case? Try putting on a plastic case and see if you still get a shock.
This is quite interesting and I hope it doesn't happen to me. Because I have a polyester jacket and I get massively shocked during the winter. LoL!!
P.S. When you're getting out your car during the winter and don't want the door or anything to shock you, touch it with your key first. Sometimes you can see the spark. That's how you know it would have hurt.
Sorry about the extra. I just don't like getting shocked. LoL!!
Static electricity would cause one spark, not a series like the OP described.
I had something similar happen to me when I was charging my iPhone 4 through a USB port on my friend's PC. When I picked up the phone (touching the metal band around the sides) there was a pulsing sensation through my hand. He'd never experienced it because his phone was plastic cased. He shrugged it off as a dodgy electricity supply but I remained paranoid whenever I had to touch the phone again.
I know this is an old thread but its all i could find online. im usung an HTC M8 and have been for the last year and half. when i plug it into the wall charger and hold the phone in my left hand (not sure if it matters which hand) and touch something metallic/grounded with my right hand i get a slight nipping feeling, if i move my hand up and down i will get the nip more as i'm making and breaking connection. i decided to try a multimeter to see whats going on, so i hold a probe with my phone in my left hand and put the other probe to earth and i get between 140 and 115v ac. surely this is not normal

I had the same problem with my M7. First the charging port became really flimsy; the phone would only charge when the charging cable was positioned in a certain way. After that I began to feel a constant static electricity when the phone was charging. It was strong enough that I could feel it all over the phone. As soon I disconnected the charging cable it stopped.
I tried grounding myself to something to see if it would stop and it never did.
After I got a new M7 the problem went away. My guess is that the charging port is suspect.

Interesting.. earlier this week my charger nearly caught on fire-- sparks, smoke, all that good stuff. I've been noticing over the last year or so that the quality of chargers has seemed to get worse and worse-- at least in the US. This was the first time I'd ever seen anything of the sort happen, and here there is a thread that is (sort of) about that subject. Were either of you (who recently posted) running Android 6.0-- just out of curiosity? My M7 uses up a ton more power on Marshmallow and runs significantly hotter than it did on Lollipop... hopefully that will change as the OS develops.

There should only be 5 Vdc reaching your phone, if you get 115 Vac then your charger is for sure faulty.

I tried to soft reset my tytn II in the dark, and accidently put the stylus into the usb/charging slot and somehow screwed up my phone. It will not charge, or connect with my computer. Any suggestions?
OMG! I did the same thing, but luckily i didn't do further damage except the copper parts become bent
HTC should have done something about this! i am sure many other users did the same
can u take it back to your supplier for warranty claim?
same problem here...
i could bend back the copper contacts with a WOODEN (!!) toothpick (dont steer around with metal in there....)
Looks like i tried to reset the device in darkness last night and fumbled around in the usb jack.
Damn... really bad position for the reset-button!
Same issue here-- though some chargers now work, some don't. My phone will charge with my OEM charger and usb to computer, but not my 3rd party wall charger or my car charger. Aaargh

Check out this thread at AT&T Forum regarding my attempt to get a replacement phone.
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=65536
I got mine replaced at the store. I was under 30 days and was lucky.
I am going to order one of these:
http://www.eforcity.com/silicone-mini-5-pin-plug-for-motorola-v3-2-pc-smoke-cmotv3xxpc01.html
it should fit. i also heard that certain verizon phones have rubber usb plugs on them. I may just stop in a verizon store and see if one fits. My tmobile wing had one on it and it worked great to protect the usb port.
Well...I did the samething last night. Tried to soft reset my phone while driving in the dark. Luckily I've had my tilt less than 30 days, called and now all I have to do is go to the AT&T store for a replacement....Also, I'm going to pay 10% restocking fee so I can get an extra battery and charger...W00T!!!!! I actually saved about 50 bux
One way to avoid doing this in the dark is to flip the phone upside down, locate ExtUSB socket with your left index finger, keep your finger over the socket and slide your stylus down your finger tip. Of course the easiest way is to turn a light on.

true, but for those of us with this problem already, it is too late
Luckily, I tried a newer charger, and my car charger, and they both work. As far as connecting to my computer, I have to use my Y cable that was included with my old 8525. I'm still pissed, and I have a TyTn II and not a tilt, so warranty will be a pain in the ass, considering I have to send it to the UK. If it starts to act up, I will have to send it in, and if I get it fixed, I will definitely buy one of those plugs from the above post. Thanks for all the replies, and good luck to everyone with this problem.
Lesson # one don't put things in holes in the dark in bed
Well, good news is ATT is sending me out a replacement phone for free since I am still under warranty (outside the 30 days, but inside the 1-year). Now I just need to re-flash back to OEM status so I don't get busted on the return...time to test out the "Idiot's Guide to Re-Flashing Back to Original ROM" and see if it does me right.

that's why I have so many kids!?! anyways I had my phone charging in my car and it fell of my seat onto the floor. the nezt day I noticed it wasn't charging (tytn 2 no easy warranty fix) I then noticed that inside the usb thing is a black plastic piece with the small metal connections. the black piece was bent a little on one side so I removed the battery took a pair of tweazers and bent it it straight again than I took some forced air in a can (for a computer keyboard) and blew in there to make sure none of that cheap plastic shredded and got in the way of the metal connections. it looked like after I used the tweazers some of that black plastic chipped off (very small pieces) anyways after that it worked perfectly. hopefully this will help others
well it seems i messed up now and stuck my stencil in there one of the small Metal wires is out of whack now ad some chargers work and some dont did anyone get a plug yet?
pissed
so I live in metro detroit with a tytn 2 not a tilt. after I stuck my stencil in there it seems my car charger don't work. when charging with my audio adapter its flaky losing some power, maintaining, gaining some power. but when I use my wall charger with no adapter it charges!! if you put the kaiser flat on the table I see by 2nd wire (in the hole) is bent down(whereas the others are up) and its sitting in the middle of the whole.(my buddy told me to use a needle and a magnify glass because the 2nd wire was actually bent all the way down but I got it in the middle after messing with it. when that one wire was out of whack my car charger gave me a red constant light (no charge) after the stencil incident. I hope all that helps somebody! anyways so I call HTC first they tell me that's not covered under warranty. Then they tell me I have to send it to houston tx for 3 weeks. Then they tell me it will cost $300 usd to repair!!!! this is insane for a little miniusb piece that got hit once with a stencil. it probaly cost 22cents. what is everyone else doing? I think if I can get that metal piece to stick to the top it'll be fine. I just switched to att and I have 6 days until im locked to a 1yr contract I could buy a tilt for 250 or whatever but id have to sign a 2yr contract.
I stuck the stylus in the USB port as well but luckily I didnt seem to do any damage. I did bend it a bit but with some gentle pressure in the opposite direction it went back into place. I havent had any problems charging or syncing since then, so it seems I got lucky. Just gotta hope I dont do it again, lol.
ya the black piece as a whole seems to be able to bend a little but if u mess the little little metal connections in there you're gonna have problems
Hi, this is my first post and I hope to help someone. I had the same problem with my phone, it charged with the home charger and in the cradle but the car charger won't work. using a close light and a magnifier I could notice that with the phone with the screen upside looking at the usb connector that the pin al the way to the right was flat and a tip was showing as opposite to the others. I returned it to the former position and voila!! it works. I hope to help someone.
Didn't see any info about it here, so I figured I would chime in with some initial impressions.
The inductive back is a smooth texture, not crosshatched like the D4 is standard. It is a small distinction that I am sure will fade over time, but for now, it feels too slippery.
The inductive back does increase the thickness of the droid 4, it isn't a lot, but it is probably enough to make some cases not work. I still have to source an otterbox case to see if a) it fits, and b) to see if the case interferes with the inductive charge, I will report back when I find out.
I am at the office, so I cannot actually see how it plays with my energizer qi pad, hopefully it doesn't beep all the time like the verizon one reportedly does.

Let us know how it works!
And bleh, Verizon charging pad beeps constantly? That... seems silly, to put it politely...
Well I havent used the verizon pad, but that is what I heard, beeps all the time, beep on connect, beep on full, beep on release.
I have had my droid on the energizer pad and it works and there were no beeps.
I like that orientation doesn't seem crucial. I had my phone at different angles and as long as you get the blue light, you are good to go.
I did see a demo where Panasonic made qi charger with a moving coil
youtube.com/watch?v=an7lWob6ZrE
That would rock, as then you don't have to worry about placement (not that that is a huge issue)
Quick update about the charger
I am having some issues, namely the phone will indicate it is charging, the charge pad will indicate it is charging, and yet after hours my battery meter has barely moved. Interestingly enough the phone lasts seems to last quite awhile on 20% battery. I think something is goofy with the battery reporting.
I will likely fully charge the phone over usb and then discharge as normal and see if that "resets" it.
I also worry that on and after you remove the phone from the charge pad the back is INCREDIBLY hot. Hot to the point where I am worrying it is hurting the battery.
Does anyone have the safe temp range for Droid 4 batteries? So I can monitor it.
If things don't sort out this weekend, I will be contacting Motorola about my issues.
I wonder if they will tell you to use the 'official' pad...
Also, you could try downloading Battery Monitor Widget to see what is going on wrt charging and discharging, including (dis)charge rates.
According to Wikipedia, operating temp for Li-ion batteries is up to 158F...however, heat above room temp causes them to lose capacity. The more "full" they are, the more capacity they lose in hot weather. Temps north of 100F in conjunction with a full charge would cause them to lose a third of their capacity in a year. Continuing to charge them past the point where they're full causes them to heat up, and eventually enter thermal runaway, a chain reaction that guarantees they keep heating until they ignite. Modern devices of course are designed to sense that point and stop before it's too late; that's why a multi-cell battery may never reach 100% charge: If one cell is at 100%, the charger stops, leaving the rest at a mere ninety-something.
GEF
well at one point today, i think the phone did overheat and would not turn on for about 20 minutes, the back was quite hot. Since then, I had it fully charge on the inductive pad (energizer qi) and it was not hot and fully charged.
I will be angry if I am told I have to use the VZW pad, what is the point of a standard if they don't follow it?
As far as thermal runaway, the Droid 4 does auto turn off charging when it is full whether on the pad or usb.

Wow... You are making me reconsider the induction pad. It sounds great, but if it generates excess heat, that might be a bad tradeoff given the battery isn't replaceable.
Just received mine in the mail this morning! I haven't played around with it too much, just confirmed it works (charged from 90% --> 100%).
I don't know whether I have an updated version or what, but the beep isn't too bad. I would say my dishwasher's beep is louder. I can see it being annoying if it was in a bedroom or something, but for my office (at home) it isn't too bad.

Ever get the Otterbox case to see if it fits with the inductive battery cover?
No I have not found a verizon store that has one I can try on and test with a charging pad.
I know the inductive case makes it a hair thicker so I worry about both fit, and charging.
Droid 4 + Charging Back + OtterBox Does NOT fit
Sorry to jump on someone else's thread, but I have received an Otter Box case for Motorola Droid 4 and I also have the inductive charging back, and with the charging back on the phone, the rear part of the case will NOT FIT.
I have tried the plastic rear case itself without the silicone rubber insert and even that won't fit.
I have left a post with Otterbox support to see if they MIGHT be working on a new case, But, I don't hold out much hope for that.
I have not received my charging pads yet, so I can not say if the Droid 4 can be charged through the case or not.. When I get the pads I'll give it a try and report back.
Exactly how does this work? Does it plug into the usb port, or just replace the original back?
The reason I am asking is my daughter just recently broke the usb port on her Droid 4. I tried to get it fixed at a local computer/cellphone repair center, but they coudln't get the part to fix the port. Today I threw in the towel, and used my insurance.
I was told it just replaced the back, as far as the Verizon rep could tell, it didn't plug into the usb port, but I didn't want to pony up the money for the back, and a mat just to find out I had to replace the phone anyhow.
Contacts are internal
The charging back has 4 contacts on it that connect to the internal connections of the phone.

It doesn't use the USB port. That's actually why I got one. I wanted to avoid wear and tear on the USB port.
That being said, I'd see if Verizon would send you a new one? They generally will unless there is evidence of gross abuse...

Thank you both for your replies, but I already used my insurance. I already took it into Verizon to see if they could do anything for us at the store. When the representative that helped us saw that the case around the screen was cracked, he told us if we attempted to use the warranty that Motorola would have said the reason the port no longer worked was from being dropped, even though being dropped had nothing to do with the port coming loose.
She now has a protective case for it, and hopefully keeps it on there, so the warranty can be used if it has port issues like the first one.
I am still thinking about getting her an inductive charge back, to keep wear and tear off the port. She tends to have it plugged in by her bed, and randomly answers texts throughout the night.

That's the problem, if you get the inductive charging cover, no current cases will fit. Since there is no possibility of using an extended battery with the Droid 4, the case manufacturers ASSUME that nobody needs a larger case. The inductive cover is not common and therefore is too much of a niche market for anyone to make a case for it. I tried hacking up a regular case but it didn't work out.

Did you get it working?
i kinda dissappointed with the scratch resistance of nexus 7. i use moko case since i bought the nexus but now i find a soft scratch on my screen. I use it moderately, i keep it in my bag inside the case, i never knock the screen with any hard object, so the only thing i could think off that can scratch my screen is when i wipe the screen using my clothes and the dust scratch it. What makes me disappointed is, N7 is advertised using gorilla glass (or at least protection from corning if i'm mistaken), is it really that easily to scratch? My nexus S screen has no scratch whatsoever except a crack on where i dropped it which is acceptable because it's my mistake, but i use my N7 carefully and i still manage to scratch it. Did anyone have the same issue?
My next issue is a little dent on the side of the N7. Like i said earlier, i used it moderately (not too careful but not careless). I did place my N7 inside a bag with other stuffs (my phone, wallet, maybe some coin in there), i keep it inside the moko case, it did expose the side of the N7 (which makes me think to buy another case), but even my naked nexus s made from plastic did not have any dent other than when falling from my hand.
My next issue is my N7 is not charging properly, might be from the power outlet or from the N7 itself. I was travelling to Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Fransisco and i notice that my N7 is not charging when i plug it to the power outlet using the original N7 charger. I need to turn off my N7, unplug the microUSB cable from my N7, and then re-plug it in order to be able to charge it. And when i turn it on again, it stop charging. Sometimes it keep charging even though it gives no charging indication sometimes it not. It kinda doesn't make any sense to not be able to charge from the wall power outlet (not from PC usb) while my sister can charge her ipad just fine and his husband can charge his asus transformer prime just fine. It happens not only in 1 hotel but from many hotels and many other cities. Well, i can charge just fine in my house but yesterday i find out that my N7 suddenly stop charging when i play a game, i have to re-plug the cable in order to make it charged again. I want to send it in for a replacement, but i afraid it will charge me a fees because of the screen scratch and the dent thingy.
overall, i'm so not impressed by the built quality of the N7. the tablet itself offer perfect user experience.
Can't speak first your first 2 paragraphs. But the last one I might have an answer. I notice you are from jakarta, and you travelled to america and complained about the charging issues there. Well; I'm not sure what outlets you have in jakarta but im almost positive it's not the same as North America. So I assume you were using an adapter. Regardless of what adapter you have and what not; it's not going to charge properly no matter what the adapter papers say to you. My girlfriend has a kobo vox and we went to europe back in june and we charged it there and it would last at the max maybe 2-3 hrs when it's supposed to be rated at 7 hrs constantly on with wi-fi.

That's the Twitter effect, anything more than 140 characters and your brain seizes up, come back and join the real world.
At the OP re scratches - using your clothes to wipe a class surface is never going to be a good thing, you have no idea what might be on them, tiny bits of grit for example can scratch your screen easily. It's common sense to protect your investment by using a screen protector and when you can buy one for next to nothing it's surely a no brainer?
Fist off the screen is like any other gorilla glass screen its not scratch proof its scratch resistant. Its was probably sand that got your tablet should of bought a screen protector. Erica on xda TV has a really good video on it explain just about everything about glass tempering here is the link.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfgKLwGnOZs&feature=youtube_gdata_player.Well next I'd say to do is check the cable and charger there can be issues there. It also could be a charging issue from the charging port or cable corroding it happened to my galaxy nexus and it I just bought the dock and use the pogo pins for charging.
Sent from Pallet town on my nexus 7.
Careful, the N7 doesnt have Gorilla Glass at all, it has "Scratch-resistant Corning Glass"
http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/9/3148353/reminder-galaxy-nexus-does-not-have-gorilla-glass

The charger issue seems odd to me, I've only heard of issues so far when using third party chargers which are too weak.
And the dent is odd.. Horrible luck possibly? I know i have dents like that on my laptop from things smacking the corner of my messenger bag (like a subway turnstyle) so I keep my N7 in a hard case. I dont trust those book style cases for real protection :|
Looks like I'll have to report this to my boss we will get on these issues right away

Try switching to another USB cable these new cables are pretty terrible and can crap out on you. I have some that charge but don't pass data anymore and some that don't charge or do anything else.
Even though it's just hardened glass it's still created almost the same way and still scratches with sand. I think the moral of this is always use a screen protector no matter what. And that charging issue will most likely be replaced by Google for free if you bought it from the play store. Here is the Google play numbers device help line number (855) 836-3987 I'm pretty sure its a 100% toll free.

Probably sands that scratched your screen :$
Seriously, I would suggest you to call google for a replacement. You can find their number on google.com/nexus

Hello, my galaxy note has been having some issues, a couple of days ago it would charge with the charger bent down but I decided to play around with the port with a toothpick to look for dust and bend the metal bit in the middle. Now it barely charges at all, I believe the charger bit is fairly cheap but I am not sure if it is very hard to do. I am wondering if I am best off buying a new phone or paying someone to fix it for me? Or just having a go at putting the new piece in myself? I have tried using another charger and the same charger charges other phones.
-Any Help Greatly Appreciated

If you are ok using a screwdriver (jewelers type), you won't have any issues. There are countless youtube video's that show the removal procedure on that usb port. Granted, I've been doing electronics for over 40 years, but it's about a 10 minute procedure. One thing I do, with these super tiny screws, is I keep a small magnet handy that is attached to the bottom of a small metal bowl. When I take out a screw, it goes in the bowl, and with the magnetism, it won't get lost that way.
When you replace the USB port, get one that matches the one you remove. Depending on the country you live in, there could be a few different types. They all, will charge your phone, but, if you get the wrong match, the cellular signal you end up with, could be 1/2 of what it should be, so if you are in a low signal area with the one you have now, with the wrong usb board, you could end up with no signal.

Yeah, less than $10(USD). Last one I got was like 8.95 or something.
Some people have mentionned that attaching the magnetic charger the wrong way could have an ill effect on the phone. Is there any validity to this or is it just people spreading unbased rumors?
The pin holes are different shapes so that you can only properly connect it right side up, but some 3rd party chargers (including mine - the led charger) have the metal pins sticking out slightly beyond the safety holes, so the pins could make contact if I attach it wrong.
From a physics point of view, how is it any different from plugging in a plug into a wall outlet where the orientation of the plug is irrelevent?
it'll make your phone go BOOM, don't do it.

Riight, thanks
I'm a little worried about this though.. I could see myself accidently plugging it in wrong. I have the black version of the phone which looks very similar front and back, I feel like it's just a matter of time before I mess up :\ Maybe I'll try to trim the charer pins a bit with a diamond dremel bit..
It just shuts my phone down when I put it the wrong way. Works fine after turning back on.

I have the Magnector X charger and the pins are not sticking out. They are slightly below the plastic casing.
I put my Z1 the wrong way in my Brodit car holder (very good phone mount/holder by the way) and it just rebooted. It was no problem then
I also think there is no difference. I don't see any real facts about downside.
Haven't done anything bad with my phone it still charge as good, don't think it would matter at all

Good to see you can quit elementary school and still afford a decent smartphone.

Good to hear! Still don't feel like purposely testing it though.
Yes I do.
