Android system recovery <3e> - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Stupid, stupid, stupid and 1000 times stupid: 10 post rule!
I think this post should be here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1927097
Any way, I need help so I'll take it from where I can. By the way I'm not a android newbie, just N7000 newbie.
I have been last 8 hours trying to flash a new rom to my new N7000. As I'm on a mac and don want to set the "counter" of N7000, my path was going to CWN from that post.
But I'm stuck, as when I try to do a "update from sdcard" I got a:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
I have tried different downloads in different paths and still the same. I have a VSLB1 original firmware.
Any ideas?

Download Philz kernel (choose the correct one) and flash that through the stock recovery.

I'm up and running....I'll tell how I fix it:
1. I downgrade to an old official firmware trough Odin (just PDA: N7000ZSKJ6_N7000OZSKJ6_TGY.zip)
2. Then I rooted trough GalaxyNoteRoot/runmemac.sh (root apk didn't work)
3. Installed MobileOdinLite (you will need to download MObileODIN FLashKernel N7000 v3.0 => scroll really down on MobileOdinLite post)
4. From MobileOdinLite updated a kernel with CWM (CF-Root-SGN_XX_OXA_LB1-v5.0-CWM5.zip)
5. From CWM installed my desired rom (AllianceROM)
6. Finally, using Odin update the modem (was not working) to XXLT3
Hope this info be useful

[Q] error ROM Manager

Hello,
just bought ROM Manager, because I want to flash CyanogenMod 7.1 to my Galaxy S i9000
Got 2 problems:
1. Trying to Backup Current Rom, I get the following error:
Verifying update package
Failed to verify whole-file signature
Signature verification failed
Installation package aborted.
2. It's unclear to me which device I must choose when flashing the Recovery Image: Galaxy i9000 (no CyanogenRom listed) or i9000 MTD (one stable and 1 nightly CyanogenRom in the list of ROM's)
MTD? What is MTD? Both options seem to flash CWM Recovery.
I must be doing something stupid, and Koushik Dutta doesn't respond to my messages I'd appreciate your help, thanks!

I'm asking for help as well, so this may not be much use, but I read a few threads back that if you have a stock recovery, the CWM or backup won't pass signature verification. It said that you needed to flash a modded 3E recovery image to your phone before proceeding. Like I said, it may not be much use, but it's worth looking into
Edit: Saw the date on this, realized you've probably already been helped >.<

[Answered] stuck on recovery verification error SGSI9000

I'm stuck in a strange problem on my Galaxy S I9000
i'm running firmware 2.3.3 gingerbread JPJV6
it is rooted
i installed rom manager
i hit Flash clockworkmod recovery (on rom manager)
choosed my phone *samsung galaxys i9000*
downloded and installed successfully (alleged)
hit reboot to cwm recovery (on rom manager)
it reboot .. Android system recovery <3e>
and in red text (E:failed to verify whole-file signature "and" E:signature verification failed)
.............................
i don't know what's wrong here ... all i wanted to do is to apply updatefile.zip of cyanogen mod ....
..............................
i downloaded the updatefile of CWM and renamed to update.zip and tried to update from the android system recovery 3e it gave me same red error
..............................
can some one help me here please i'm stuck and don't know what to do .
I had some kind of this message one time, try to go in download mode to write again the PIT file.
i didn't understand what you mean by write again the PIT file .... you meant open odin3 get another PIT file ? or re-flash the gingerbread and then root it all over again ? you think this would fix anything ? i'm still confused not sure what to do
If you want CM, just flash custom kernel as a PDA in Odin. You will get CWM.
Then go to CM thread and follow instrcutions.
one last question ........ can you suggest a kernel to me .. I'm on rooted 2.3.3 gingerbread JPJV6 ..
3e is your problem, it only allows Samsung-signed packages. I'm using ChainFire's CF-Root kernel with stock JVT (until I get TeamHacksung's ICS working properly!)

Well, if you're going to CM, it is same what kernel to use when flashing CM. Just pick one up, like Semaphore, download it, put it in Odin as a PDA, flash it. Then you have CWM. In CM you can't use what ever kernel you want
thanks i'll download semaphore kernel and see what's gonna happen i appreciate your help here really

ClockworkMod Recovery/Custom roms

Hello ppl !
Few days ago i became owner of my first android phone, samsung captivate. I am totally loving it, but at some point i realised it has much more potential then as it comes with stock, i made a update with kies from samsung website to gingerbread and i also was able to root my phone, so after researching i found out that this is a best forum for android stuff, spent few days over here reading a lot, but still don't understand how to install custom roms.
my firmware is 2.3.5 , baseband version I897UCKK4 kernel 2.6.35.7-I897UCKK4-CL614489
I'am very keen to start with SimplyStock KK4 V1.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1486344) but cant achieve anything.
as far as i understood, in a first place i need to install/flash clockwork recovery, i downloaded few versions but when i try to install it from recovery mode it says:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
i also tried to install few custom roms from recovery mode but same issues
i performed wipe data / factory reset and wipe cash as well, and as far as i understood i can wipe system only if i have clockwork recovery that i don't!
so this is my situation, any advise and help would be superb !
thank you guys
Welcome to the world of flashing. First, I would read some of the stickies on how to use Odin.
The easiest way to get CWM would be to flash a kernel with CWM already built in. The Corn Kernel is one such kernel. Flash it with Odin (the tar file goes in the PDA slot). You will then have CWM and can flash ROMS and other packages.
Once again, read first! It can help keep you from bricking your phone.
P.S. Back up your /efs folder (read threads about this one)
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Tanks a lot !!!!
I made backup with Efs Pro as a tar file
then i downloaded CornKernel_UCKK4_v603 and flashed it with odin
then i putted SimplyStock KK4 V1.0 as a zip file into my phone and from new recovery mode installed it without any problem
thanks a lot again!!!

[Q] How to reflash rooted I9000 without Market

Hi guys,
Got myself between rock/hardspot. I'm trying to re-flash kernel on my I9000. Every time I try to flash via recovery (stock 3e), I get error saying failed E-signature verification.
I can't download any fixes from Market/Internet because of error: SIM not detected (this actually is *why* I want to reflash). However I CAN update via tar & Downloader using Odin 1.35, or from zip via stock recovery (3e). I can't flash *anything* (like ROM Manger or CWM) because of verification error above. Phone *does* appear to have CWM app installed, but it boots to stock 3e recovery *not* CWM recovery.
I spent over a week searching XDA and the web and tried many dozens of supposed solutions but can't find one that works. Most were either crapware or required Market access or ROM Manager.
Help! I have little hair left to pull out!
Details:
Model: Samsung I9000 (no suffix)

What he said, gets you cwm.
Plus it doesn't look like you have a modem/baseband installed, that will need to be flashed via ODIN, regardless.
Still No Joy on flashing ROM without Market
Thanks thedefault, but still no joy. Same old problem "E:signature verification failed". I tried CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVK-v2.7-CWM3RFS.zip and CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS. This is the same old problem that's driven me batty for over a week - can't flash any zips. Any other suggestions?
How to install baseband/modem
Thanks nyloncrack. Excuse my ignorance, but where do I get "basebane/modem" to install? I thought this was included in Kernel(s). Note that I can't flash any zips because of E-signature problem, can only install via Odin.
Maybe signature check is enabled by default
Signature Verification IS on
thedefault:
Yes, signature verification is always on. (At least I can't figure out how to turn it off). I read in another thread that the stock Samsung recovery (3e) checks to make sure that the file was signed by Samsung. They further advised the enquirer to roll back to version 2e which did not include this. Of course, I can't get there from here.

But with CF-Root and custom kernel a custom recovery is used. No signature check at all.
Recovery that is in use
thedefault:
I'm not *running* the "custom kernel/custom recovery" - I'm trying to *flash* them. The kernel/recovery I'm *using* is the XXJW4 kernel and Samsung 3e recovery.
BTW: One Step Forward/One Step Back
I noticed that the CF-Root zip actually contained just a tar file. Eureka!, I can use Odin to flash it! But noooooo, after I did so, phone went into continuous-reboot-loop. Arrrrgh.
I rememberd that happend to me once but I found that reinstalling a full custom rom helped me out try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1379650 it might work out.

Well, you obviously have flashed wrong cf-root kernel. Grab one that goes with your current rom (jw4, right?). Just flash correct kernel with Odin and it should work just fine
And there's many good guides/tutorials in general section which should be quite straight forward stuff..

Eureka, Success!
I finally got the phone rooted and working. For the benefit of others, I describe what I did:
1. Downloaded SU_i9000XXJVT.zip (non-rooted) that I stumbled across on the web).
2. Flashed PDA+PHONE files using Odin (CODE_I9000XXJVT_CL617736_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5 and MODEM_I9000XXJVT_REV_00_CL1064602.tar.md5).
3. Flashed kernel again with CF-Root-XX_OXA_JVU_2.3.6-v4.3-CWM3RFS.tar.
The phone booted as root, registered on network (data+voice) and everything worked. Joy!
I think (but cannot prove) that some of my earlier problems were caused by missing or hosed modem file.
Thanks to all who contributed guidance.

Can't flash my n7000

Hello,
I've been stuck on this problem all the afternoon and evening.
Here it is : I got my mother's n7000 offered, which has never been flashed before. Today, I'd like to install CM10.1. I want to install CWM (PhilZ) in order to flash CM.
When I try to "apply update from sdcard" in the stock recovery (file: PhilZ-cwm6-XXLT4-OXA-4.93-6-signed.zip) it tells me that E:signature verification failed.
And when I try to use Odin, to flash a PDA (.tar.md5), it get stuck on "NAND Write Start!!".
Concerning Odin, I found out it could be a problem that has to do with the phone partitioning and that I should flash a PIT file to resolve that problem. So I used Odin to 'flash' a PIT file. But still, this doesn't resolve the CWM installation problem...
Anyone has an idea on why is this happening and how could I get out of this mess?
Thanks in advance! Bye!
Up please, can anyone help ?
Thanks XDA community.

What worked for me back in the day was using
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
An older version from here, for example << 03.06.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v5.06.1 with CWM 6.0.3.2 based recovery >>
Then once that is installed, reboot to recovery again and install the new "advanced version"
https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/n7000/ (4.84.3 ZIP)
Then restart and you should be able to flash the one you wanted.
Also, try using older ODIN version, I think I use 1.87 or something like that, definitely not 3+.
Thank you for your help, I succeeded installing Philz 5 via Odin 1.85, then updating to CWM (KitKat compatible), then installing NightOwl (Android 5.1.x with CM12) Beta4
Once again, thank you!
